What are the basic guns your vets are carrying? Those don't look like lasguns at all, shotguns maybe? Are they even GW guns or are they converted? So many questions, but regardless I love them, they look awesome on those guardsmen.

Thanks Inevitable_Faith,

Other than the special weapons the Veterans are armed with Shotguns from the Forgeworld upgrade kit (as are most of the torsos). Some folks have seen me use the Veteran heads on other models and those I have replaced with Catachan and other heads, usually with my own forage caps. So Forgeworld and GW parts throughout, with some putty used in head gear.

Third Veteran Squad:

So in effect I had to roll some of my platoons into each other to get down to three large platoons to keep my six troop choices.

Dysartes wrote:Not a silly question at all, kakita - and Captain, feel free to correct me if I'm barking up the wrong tree here.

The white circle with a lightning bolt in it is one of the symbols often used as a campaign marker by the Imperium - the older transfer sheets included them, along with a couple of others. All the units would have that symbol painted onto them, in addition to their regimental colours or other insignia, as a way of telling units that are meant to be serving together.

Thanks kakita and Dysartes,

Good question and a good answer. To be honest it could be a campaign marker or Imperial Armour symbol, or Steel Legion or an army marker...it is on all my vehicles. Although I guess the skull motif is pretty constant throughout my army and could be an army marker...but then other folks would say that is a general Imperial Guard symbol. Viewer's choice.

Thanks guys! It's a very interesting marker.

And man CB you're a fiend! Churning out loads of minis. I barely have time to update my thread!

The infantry are looking really good too.

Looking good. Must be nice to do good salvage jobs on old FW kits and get them looking awesome (I'm referring to the Hydra on the last page).

Thanks kakita, you are building a whole AoP base (I have never done that)! I am also catching up on painted figures to rebuild a lost PLOG, so I have a bit of an advantage of having the photos already.

Thank you evildrcheese. Did you like the pristine Hydra or the dusty, oily and dirty Hydra?

Thank you Fifty.

So back to the long painting war with more regular guardsmen...after all Guard armies never have enough troops unless they are Armoured Companies.

And a little conversion of some Sniper Rifle armed Guardsmen:

I think a bit of light weathering is where it's at, so a bit of dust and oil on tanks is the way.

Nice snipers.

Thanks evildrcheese,

Back to painting Guard two by two:

These two allowed for another squad to be completed and with that I could do three Platoons of three or four squads each to allow for the three Veteran Squads.

So I got a question for ya CB if you don't mind answering. It seems you paint much of your infantry two at a time. Is there a reason for that? Many people would batch paint a unit of ten all at once. You have painted a ton of infantry and I'm wondering did you paint most of it two at a time and did you find that faster or in some way more efficient?

Inevitable_Faith,

I have always found 2-4 models at a sitting are as many as I can paint. I like to see some completed results for each sitting and thus my units slowly grow around two at time. Two seems to be the most common number.

Although my next picture is of three...it was with great joy that when the last Guard Codex came out we could get Bolters for 1 point for Sergeants...still cannot get Las Guns...but we can get Bolters. The reason for 3 was then I could replace a whole Platoon's Sergeants at once.

Thanks for the explanation CB. I have a unit of 10 wyches to do, I may just try doing them 2 at a time to see how I enjoy that.

I have some tempestus scions that I'm disappointed in the tempestors for, they can't take the basic rifle the rest of the squad gets and instead have to take a pistol. When your unit is only 5 guys that loss of firepower outside 12" range hurts. Your bolter sergeants look good man, they fit in nicely.

Thanks Inevitable_Faith, nothing like four or six painted figures on the shelf that only need a few more to complete a squad to encourage you.

OK, more Guardsmen...this time some Flamer armed Troopers...tried a little variation. Heads and hand positions.

Then I stumbled across something I did not expect, a member of WarSeer who was following the PLOG suggested some Battletech decals of the Black Widows of Natasha Kerensky fame. Suddenly I could add spider patches to my "Spiders". Check out the right forearms of each of these Guardsmen:

Now the decals are pretty small, and in the end the forearm seemed the only place I could place them consistently. After I did that I thought about shaving off the back mount and placing the patch there, but so many of my Guard have packs I decided against it. I gave larger patches to Officers and Sergeants.

Found a photo of the decals:

And another three Sergeants with Bolters (used the Flamer arms and straps to emphasize the weight and size of a Bolter to a Guardsman):

Those decals are a great idea and add even more personality to your already very awesome force. I love the idea of the strap for the bolter to tell the viewer that "this weapon is heavy and not designed for human hands". I really appreciate the little conversions you do scattered all over your army, some people go hog wild with conversions and the army seems to lose some cohesion, an important trait for IG in my opinion, but your conversions are so tastefully done for a purpose that they blend well but can still be appreciated by anyone who knows the model range.

Thank you very much Inevitable_Faith,

Next on the agenda was another three Sergeants, again replacing the three Las Pistols of the third Platoon.

GW do seem to have made some odd choices on what you can arm Sergeants with over the years - it'd just be nice for them to be consistent from one book to another.

I think it is safe to say you like that particular head for your officers, no?

Thanks Dysartes,

It was the only Cadian head I could find in any number without a helmet (other than much more expensive Forgeworld)...that was until I discovered my super secret solution...which I will post shortly as a made a whole Conscript Squad out of them.

Just noticed the shotgun troops, are they conversions or old kits?

Thanks stonned_astartes,

The Shotgun armed troopers are Forgeworld bodies and a mixture of Forgeworld and my own converted heads...regular Cadian legs.

Now here is a shot with the regular Cadian helmetless head that I have been giving Forage Caps to and one of the heads from the Berlin or Bust German Forage Caps. The second option I was going to start using in a big way for a Conscript unit.

Thanks evildrcheese,

So many Sergeants because I now had so many squads that needed them (12 before adding Heavy Weapons and 15 afterwards).

Now I started another project to build a Conscript squad...at 3 points a model I initially was not that eager, but then I got a little stoked with the completion of my test models.

I used the forage cap heads and removed the shoulder pads off the arms to create this look from the Cadians:

Thanks Nevelon, never thought of that, some folks have commented that my conscripts look young.

Two more, only 31 to go.

Squad so far.

Thanks Dysartes,

Some lost their arms to new ones and a few had weapon swaps for Bolt Pistols like these two:
