Just ordered the two Warhammer 40k Relic expansions for $10 each. With shipping to the easy coast of the US, it came to $33 total... $13 of which was shipping. Give that the expansions are normally $40 each, that's a pretty solid deal. I didn't see anything else that I had to have, but it's a perfect opportunity to pick up some of the Warhammer stuff that will soon be gone forever.
I picked up the entirety of Warhammer 40k Conquest and Relic for $150 (incl shipping). FFG is losing the Warhammer license soon, and those puppies were priced to sell.
Books are heavy.. weight matters when it comes to shipping I'll never understand why so many threads have an incredible amount of "shipping is expensive" posts, as if the postal service was just invented or something.
I grabbed all the discwars stuff I needed to be able to play however at some point. Not sure I'll ever play it but it's small and for $60 for everything I'd ever need after shipping I'm good with it.

Charming. OK everybody, you heard him - no complaining unless it's something that affects Kirasu

All of my favorite online stores (Amazon, Cool Stuff, Miniature Market) all mitigate the cost of shipping. I rarely venture outside them, so even though $15 for shipping a bunch of board games isn't exactly an unfair cost, it's one that I don't generally have pay.

Shipping out of the USA always seems to cost a fortune compared to other RoW shipping.
Just ordered a bunch of the Dark Heresy books. I'd like to find the main rule book for version two. But I am honestly just buying these books for the background, since I've heard so many good things. So if I can't find it, no big deal.
Sqorgar wrote: All of my favorite online stores (Amazon, Cool Stuff, Miniature Market) all mitigate the cost of shipping.
My guess is that, since they're regular carrier customers, they can receive a lower shipping rate, which they hide into the price of the products. FFG doesn't ship out individual parcels as part of their regular business, so they pass on the costs to you.
(I think you already know that, but others might not.)
It's not just overseas shipping that expensive on that site. Thought about picking up a board game from the sale, and it was like $11.00 shipping from a few states away...essentially making it no cheaper than buying it off of Amazon or eBay.
Kirasu wrote: Books are heavy.. weight matters when it comes to shipping I'll never understand why so many threads have an incredible amount of "shipping is expensive" posts, as if the postal service was just invented or something.
Because FFG's shipping is ridiculously expensive, and it's not due to weight (well, not only due to weight) but more to do with the lack of shipping deals/provisions they have with USPS. As they don't ship that much stuff, they don't qualify for better rates like a proper store would, so their shipping costs are astronomically high compared to most places.
Kirasu wrote: Books are heavy.. weight matters when it comes to shipping I'll never understand why so many threads have an incredible amount of "shipping is expensive" posts, as if the postal service was just invented or something.
We've seen postage rates pretty much double since 2010. I worked for a company that pretty much ceased to be viable after the second or third postage rate hike.
I have no time to get everyone to the table for a RPG, nor do I have the patience to plan the whole thing.
I do have plenty of free moments to stick my nose in a book.
Suggestions?
I've enjoyed all the ones I've read. Standouts would be the Sisters one and ..uh, the one with all the aliens in it. I'm not good with the titles. I've heard great things about the IG book, but haven't read it myself.

As others have said there really aren't bad ones. I only know 40k through the RPG, don't play the minis game, and every book is enjoyable. If you only care about fluff just pick up the ones that cover topics you're interested in.
1. Core Rulebooks (mostly rules, but with a few big fluff sections on both general 40K and the specific setting for that game).
2. GM kits (they have a small booklet with a small adventure that fleshes out usually one world/location mentioned in the core rulebook).
3. Adventure Books (lots of fluff on a few areas, mixed in with the details to run a campaign/rules for adversaries/NPCs etc.). 'Bout a 50/50 split on fluff/crunch.
4. Background Books (lots of fluff, little crunch). I'd say a 70/30 split. Books like Edge of the Abyss, The Achillus Assault, the Outer Reach.
5. Rules Expansions (lots of crunch, little fluff). Opposite split of the above. A lot of the class expansions are like this - Tome of Decay, Book of Judgement, Shield of Humanity.
6. Bestiaries (50/50). By their nature they are rulebooks, but contain a lot of fluff on the things that have rules.
7. Oddities. Some books mix it up (like The Soul Reaver and Ark of Lost Souls), and they adventure books that introduced a large set of new rules and also background for that. Interesting books.
8. The Best Book Ever! The Lathe Worlds. (/bias)

The base shipping is just high. I wanted order a single $3 dice bag and it was $9.95 shipping

Do you happen to know all the background books? Those are the ones I'm interested in again. Thanks!

The categories I mentioned are a way to loosely define the book types, so some have more rules than others, some are much bigger than others and thus have more crunch but also more fluff. But if I had to list background books (and I'm including Bestiaries here):
DH1.0 The Inquisitor's Handbook - the first big expansion for Dark Heresy. Very rules heavy, but it's a big 240 page book which means lots more background. The Radical's Handbook - Not as big, but a lot of background stuff for the more radical side of the Callixis Sector Inquisitors.
RT Into the Storm - Rogue Trader's equivalent of The Inquisitor's Handbook. Edge of the Abyss - Very much a high fluff/low crunch book. The Navis Primer - Tons of stuff on Navigators and other warp-related topics.
DW Rites of Battle - Deathwatch's equivalent of The Inquisitor's Handbook. The Achilus Assault - Another nearly only background book. The Outer Reaches - A book with more background than rules, but not strictly a background book. Introduces the Necrons to Deathwatch.
BC The Tome Books are the only expansions for Black Crusade outside of the GM kit and the adventure book. All of them expand upon the game's setting, and introduce tons of new elements, but they also have a lot of rules. They're the 50/50 books in the purest sense.
OW Same boat as BC, with all the non-adventure books being 50/50's, expanding on the setting as well as introducing new rules for things (like tanks - lots of tanks!).
DH2.0 Much like BC, Dark Heresy 2.0 has the 3 Ordo books that function in much the same way.
Kirasu wrote: Books are heavy.. weight matters when it comes to shipping I'll never understand why so many threads have an incredible amount of "shipping is expensive" posts, as if the postal service was just invented or something.
Probably because depending on what you're buying and who from, it's not always that expensive. I for one will never understand why so many people feel a need to bitch and moan to hear their own self-important voices heard when other people mention shipping costs rather than just letting it go.
Yeah that's what I did with DUST a few years back. Great prices but shipping more than doubled the cost of the order. I justified it because it was still 25% cheaper than buying the same stuff off eBay from within the UK but that just adds up to a "Good Deal" (as long as you are prepared to buy a lot) rather than the "Great Deal" you get if you live in the US. Shame, as I wouldn't mind a few of those 40KRPG Books.. and heck even the WFRP 3rd ed core set isn't a bad price at $40. Oh well.
Picked up the Black Crusade books. Don't have any experience with the RPG, but figured since the core book was still available might as well give it a go.
Ugh, forgot to look at the board games and grab the Relic expansions.
Fortunately for us in the UK books (unlike box games) don't attract VAT and customs duty (if it applies) only kicks in at £135.... and if you don't have to pay any of those then you don't have to pay any handling charges either (I hate these so much, taxes are fair enough, but the handling fees, Aaaargh)
Triple9 wrote: Picked up the Black Crusade books. Don't have any experience with the RPG, but figured since the core book was still available might as well give it a go.
The Nurgle book was out of stock and its the one I wanted most
I couldn't justify getting all the Deathwatch books and quite a few books for the other RPGs aren't listed either but at least I now have a lot less Ebay searching before I get myself a complete set of books.
The RPG itself is ok, although it is a little bogged down in detail (lots and lots of equipment and skills that only grant minor bonuses) although that does add to the experience to a degree and its definitely a positive from a fluff point of view.
I'm in the same boat, I would have hoovered up all the WFRP stuff if it wasn't for the postage. Give it some time and hopefully prices will calm down on ebay!
I'm just saying that standard domestic shipping for a 6 lb board game is 25$. Companies get cheap shipping by subsidizing it via high selling products. Clearance sales are pretty much the opposite of "high selling products".
So I don't see why it's surprising when this happens *every* year and international buyers should be used to it. I agree that they should find a way to make shipping cheaper but being outraged over something you KNOW was going to happen seems silly.
Just like how every kickstarter or GW thread starts with "Shipping and/or prices are so high in australia!"

would have bought me all the books if for nothing then having reading material (don't play RPG's really) but then realized i spent my gaming budget on some 40K things like a wazbomma, titan, stompa and so on and so on, so alas must wait for some of my stuff on eBay sells before I can buy more

I've noticed shipping overseas books and such can get downright expensive and even on the cheap shipping too.

Spoiler:
I don't get how, if they now are part of Asmodee, they don't have a european warehouse to ship from. It's ridiculous.

Buy Lathe Worlds!
If only I had waited and read this instead of spending an hour doing the same research...
Thanks for taking the time to do this, mate! I'm sure it will help others like me that are more interested in the fluff than the actual RPG.

Its very easy actually.
They are liquidating all of their remaining Games workshop games/items from their warehouses in the US, because well that's where the items are located. At the same time, Asmodee has their holiday sale going on. If you want board games, im sure its not that high of shipping to buy them if your in the EU.
They are part of Asmodee now, but that happened just this year. Do you expect them to take all their old stock of Games Workshop stuff and ship it over to Asmodee warehouses, to just sit? That would be super expensive for them to do, so they are not going to do that.

Shipping out of the USA always seems to cost a fortune compared to other RoW shipping.
Once upon a time, the US used to send packages 'Surface Mail' - boat or truck - and now they ship air freight only.
Surface Mail took longer, but was a lot cheaper - and I, for one, preferred it. Weight did not matter nearly so much.

The Auld Grump
yeah ever since surface mail was removed here in the US shipping overseas can get costly.

DARN IT!
I missed this, and now the Nemesis expansion is sold out. That's the one I really wanted...and I'm not sure if I want to pay that shipping just for HoT. Hm.
I got a bunch of Battlelore and Diskwars stuff for $145 (with shipping). Looks like the same stuff would cost $322 from Miniature Market, so I'm pretty happy.
Went and dropped $76 bucks, got most of the Rogue Trader books (that they still had on hand), Disciples of the Dark Gods and the Radical's Handbook from Dark Heresy, and the Tomes of Decay and Fate for Black Crusade. Oh, and a copy of Anima. Not a bad haul.

Not a problem, long as y'all bought The Lathe Worlds.
And even if you didn't (which you should - go back and order it!), you can still get The Lost Data Slate, which is a free supplement for The Lathe Worlds.
I was able to finish my deathwatch book collection, get all the black crusade books, and finish my collection of warhammer conquest and invasion for $80 (inclusive shipping). I don't play either of the rpgs, but the books have nice fluff, art, and are great for references for any 40k collector. Not bad at all at $3 a pack, $20 a core set, and $5 a book!!
I should have waited as I spent about $10 on average to get every booster for conquest last month. Still a great sale!
Tamereth wrote: I was tempted by all the deathwatch books, only $45 for the lot.
Shipping to the UK, $111. F that.
Did you add VAT on top of that? lol
Books are VAT exempt but I'm sure the parcel would have been stopped and checked in customs, and the royal mail would add a £10 handling fee on coz that's what they do.
Just hoping somewhere here in the UK that sells the books will have a clearance sale on them now. But knowing my luck they will just sit on them, then double the price once they go out of print.
Now they just need to bring back the Chaos in the Old World and the Horus Heresy board games so that I can pick them up for less than what the eBay sharks are selling them for.
So pissed I missed Horus Heresy for 25 bucks a couple years back.....
I'm almost thinking of getting at least the core and the undead expansions of Battlelore 2e, because it'll especially pay off in 4-5 years when my son (who's currently two) can play it as his first wargame, with much more durable figures than my preciously painted collection.
Picked up the rest of the Conquest supplements (Necon, Tyranid and a Tau set) I wanted to get before the game disappeared. Would have got more Dust, but it's mostly the SSU stuff left, and budget is still pretty tight.
Overall, paid $58 (plus shipping), for about half of what it would have cost normally. Not too shabby, though I certainly wish shipping had been cheaper.
Someone asked me what I wanted for Christmas, and what did I say? "The Lathe Worlds."
How was the Necron fluff in The Outer Reaches? Was it friendly to Oldcron #neverdynasties players? I may never get a chance to read that book at less than eBay prices now...

I wouldn't be surprised if it all went out on the 28 or 29th when sale is over.
Kinda funny I ordered 3 things for Battlelore, then next day ordered Arkham Horror Ragoue(sp) Expansion deck. Got the deck in 2 days and waiting on my holiday order still.
Didn't that recently happen to someone else and it was just a sign of information being moved to the pre-shipping database?
Also, pretty sure last year the orders were delayed at the very least until after Cyber Monday, and I think there were a few similar questions about orders going through. If you're worried, send them an email. Just don't expect a reply right away.
Just got my shipping confirmation today. Looks like everything went fine, I guess they decide to wait until the sale was complete to begin the process of shipping orders.
I had 2 orders but have only received notice of one of them mailing. I'm assuming it was just that much more they have to work thru till they get to the second one.
Both of my orders have now arrived, although the second one only got there yesterday. More worryingly I tried to contact their help desk to get an update on the delays twice. The first time I didn't get any response, the second time I only got an answer after receiving the second dispatch notification and the response was a rather incoherent "we're really busy, but can't check on individual orders anyway".
So, stuff is coming, but when it will clear through the system is anyone's guess (including Asmodee's it would appear)
I still haven't received any updates on my order other than the confirmation email. Considering the shipping charges, I expected to have my order by now. Instead, stuff that I ordered after this from China via the slow boat has already shipped and arrived.
On the good side, the pending charge for my order disappeared from my credit card as all charges from merchants that don't get confirmed. So, I'm not out any money as this moment. As of right now, I'm not even sure I care about the order anymore at all. At this point I'm more concerned that some fraud is going on and my credit card information will be used for something unauthorized in the future.
I've tried to contact customer service. I just get automated emails back with non-sequitur replies.
But this has made an impression. I will never order "direct" from Fantasy Flight Games again, no matter what the alleged deal is. Handling orders like this is completely unacceptable in this age of Amazon. This is the worst mail order experience I've had in at least a decade.
Still only have confirmation of one of my orders. And even with that confirmation the charge for that and the other order still aren't on my card. Oh well. It'll show up when it shows up. I'm hoping the second one comes thru as that's the majority of books I ordered.

I understand your pain, with the high shipping cost, I would have expected this to be handling with more care (I ordered the 16th, just got the notification like the 2nd), hopefully it will have arrive by the time I get home from work today.
I will say that this is far better than the experience I've had with Battlefront/GF9 - 5 months and 3 returns before I got my stuff from them, all while they held my money so I couldn't get a refund.

Have you ordered from them before?
I ordered from FFG not counting this sale, 3 other times in the past month or so and gotten the product in 2 days. Just as fast as amazon.
My Holiday order is still who knows where, and ive tried to contract support but got automated replies. It stinks, but I'm in no hurry for Battle Lore items I got.
Sorry for experience is bad, but they are really good in shipping. again they prob just got swamped.
Got my first order in today. Enough to max out disc wars for two+ people to play for $40. So I'm a happy camper that came thru. Now hopefully my box with 5-6 RPG books comes in. Still haven't gotten that tracking number yet.
So I finally got a reply to my first email query, sent in nearly three weeks ago! Was a bit more of a professional, composed, response saying that they had been utterly overwhelmed by demand in this year's sale.
Now I get that that can't be helped, but I have two observations on this; before I sent my second e-mail I specifically checked their website for any news and there was nothing about the delays so 1) if you are being overwhelmed, put a damn banner on the main page so people can understand what's going on (and maybe hold off bothering you). Whilst I accept that there's probably not a huge amount you can do to improve logistics in a rush, 2) you can grab some extra people, or an agency, to at least answer the emails!
Final thought, maybe giving up the GW license wasn't such a great idea, seems like quite a demand for the RPGs is still there!?
Final thought, maybe giving up the GW license wasn't such a great idea, seems like quite a demand for the RPGs is still there!?
Could be people grabbing them before they are gone "just in case". I know I've paused when seeing a GWFFG game in the shop with an eye for future value.
Oh that's absolutely a big part of it, but I don't think it's the whole story; this level of demand suggests there was still a viable market there (possibly even a growing one, given how GW see to be improving)
It's a shame to see all that good work disappear is all.
the prices were so cheap I don't think you can really say anything based on the sales
there is clearly an interest in 40K and the expanded universe the RPGs provide for it so if you could pick up the stuff for the price of a coffee/pint or two why not do so
(I know I would have done so if the international shipping hadn't meant they'd have cost me real money)
far fewer would have ever bitten at real prices (or at best only grabbed a book or two)
I have to say, if they had both not announced the partnership was ending AND had this sale, I wouldn't have picked up the Conquest cards that I did get.
I have a feeling I wasn't alone in this; the regular price point may not have kept customers at bay, but this sale was just too good for folks to pass up. In short, the market may not have been sustainable and the fire sale before they got stuck with soon-to-be unsellable stock may have even been at somewhat of a loss - to save stock fees down the road.
I have to say, if they had both not announced the partnership was ending AND had this sale, I wouldn't have picked up the Conquest cards that I did get.
That's what drove me. I enjoyed GMing Rogue Trader, so I thought i should grab all the Death Watch and Dark Heresy stuff while I could. You never know when you'll get to GM them, right?
I finally got my shipping notice yesterday! I ended up getting all of the Android and Arkham Horror fiction books for 1$ each! and got the AH art book as well. I also grabbed the Nemisis expansion to Relic for $10 (I had just paid $30 for Halls of Terra on Amazon the week before the sale ). Other than that, there wasnt a whole lot I needed to get.
I'm a big fan of the 40k fiction universe, and love pen/paper RPGs, but I am already heavily invested in FFGs Star Wars and the WFRP 3rd, having nearly all of the material for the former and everything for the latter...and barely have enough time to play those games. So, even thought the 40krpg books were dirt cheap...I was tempted, but ultimately decided against it. Same goes for the 40k card game... Already have Netrunner, thinking about trying out Arkham Horror, and support was going away for Conquest anyway. Plus, shipping costs were nuts, even for us in the US. I got $39 worth of stuff and paid over $30 for shipping!
No shipment yet, but got the response telling me they had been slammed and my items were pending still. I usually get a couple things from them every holiday sale and it takes a week or so to ship. They must have had a ton of GW stuff in the warehouse and everyone came out of the woodwork.
Finally got my second shipping notice. So my books should arrive soon too!
Sidenote: Diskwars is amazing for the value I wound up getting it for (and decent for it's normal pricing). Super sad they never got around to flushing out all the factions
Got my box today. Ordered 15 of the RPG books. Three of them were pulled wrong. I got doubles of two books and a random game of thrones item that I can only describe as a really cool paper weight. I figured they would be sold out of the books that they didn't send me, but after talking to them on the phone this morning they already shipped my replacements out. Hate that the mistake happened, but they fixed it as well as anyone could ask for.
I ordered all the chaos rpg books, several warhammer invasion sets, and a core set for warhammer conquest. They shipped me th tyranid expansion instead of the core set. They shipped the correct item out the next day and told me to keep the tyranid expansion after I emailed them pics of the box receipt and what was in it.

Upset that I completely missed this sale.
Squall, one of your doublers wasn't Tome of Decay by any chance, was it?

If so, would you consider selling?
Thanks
No, it was The Hand of Corruption. Sorry, if it was I would have just sent it to you.
Well I have been charged VAT, incorrectly and at around 15% for some unknown reason (it should have been 20%).
HMRC have proven to be a complete pain in the arse to deal with so I will probably end up paying it and the associated 'handling' fee from the delivery company.

Still cheaper than Ebay at least.
Man, I'm glad my ancestors threw some tea in the harbor. I don't pay any kind of tax for any kind of overseas or out-of-state purchase, ever.

what did you order some of the WHFB supplements are boxed sets rather than just books (and so, sadly, aren't zero rated) unlike the 40KRPG stuff
Got my orders just before Christmas. 5 Dark Heresy Books and Black Crusade for $45!
I have one issue though. My Black Crusade book has very messed up binding. I'm afraid it's going to fall apart in less than 6 months. Does anyone know if this is common for this book? I don't see any issues with the DH books.
Would it even be worth contacting them? They are sold out of the book now anyway. I feel like it may just be best to suck it up and be happy I got it for $5...
It never hurts to ask. Just send them a polite letter with an attached photo of the binding issue and see what they say. If there's nothing they can do, then you're just back where you started. If they have a few copies in reserve for mispacks or lost shipments, then you might just get a better copy.
