It's coming...

We’re excited to announce an amazing new product line for 2019 and beyond: Reaper Bones Black!

Since launching our Reaper Bones miniatures in 2012, Reaper Miniatures has produced and shipped over 25 million plastic models to gamers and painters around the world. But despite the success of Reaper Bones, we continually look for ways to improve our products. We’ve taken everything that makes Reaper Bones Miniatures so successful and enhanced it. We’ve always listened to our customers, and after years of feedback, we made Reaper Bones Miniatures even better with Reaper Bones Black.
• High Detail – Reaper Bones Black holds more detail and is equal to resin or metal
• Rigid Material – weapons and thin parts are much more rigid and hold their shape, but still flexible enough to withstand constant handling
• Improved Pigmentation – Reaper Bones Black models are tinted dark grey for ease of painting and viewing
• Reduced Seam and Shift Lines - produced with high-grade steel molds, Reaper Bones Black models are cleaner, crisper, and require less cleaning

But we didn’t change everything. Customers can expect the same great features with Reaper Bones Black as they do with Reaper Bones.
• Amazing sculpts – created by the best artists in the gaming industry
• Consumer-friendly pricing – Reaper Bones Black gives customers great value for their dollars
• Wide selection – Reaper Bones Black will continue to provide consumers a variety of options to suit all types of gaming. \
• Painter Friendly – made for painters and gamers, by painters and gamers.
• Ready to Paint – just a quick rinse with soap and water and you’re ready to paint
• Scaled to Fit – Reaper Bones Black models are the same size and scale as all Reaper miniatures and all modern gaming models
• Integral Bases – Reaper Bones Black models come with integral bases so they’re ready to play with right out of the package
• Always in Stock – Reaper Bones Black models won’t go out of stock and can always be reordered. You’ve got the demand. We’ve got the supply.

wow, that's interesting. I love using Bones for non-display pieces, so anything more along of them is a great thing for gaming.

Ohhh that sounds really interesting!

I've some earlier Bones and for big things like dragons its an ideal thing for casual model buying when you dont' want to spend £100+ on a single large model. Though if they can get the Bones price with metal level of detail that's really going to be a big game changer.

I foresee another multimillion £ KS!

Some of the more recent Bones KS minis have been in a darker grey and have been more durable with sharp detail. If this is the route they are going I’m all for it, especially if they can maintain the affordable pricing.

So basically this is just a new pvc mix with abs weapons is what I'm reading. Bones are nice price wise but still behind CMoN and other board games manufacturers in terms of quality.

Having both Bones and Ludocraft board game minis, that’s debatable. Each method has its good and bad examples.

I've backed all the bones KSers and at the human size are still not as good as say my Bloodrage stuff and way worse then anything Monolith has put out. Of course that's subjective but there's a reason why I have lots of human sized boardgame pieces painted up from only like 2 bones figures.

Obviously we really don't know what Bones Black is as they haven't told us anything about it yet outside of marketing speak but I'm not expecting Reaper to develop some new tech here -- it's just a reformulation. They've stated on KSer that if an existing Bones figure gets moved to BB then a new mold is made so that is further evedence on the PVC/ABS split.

From the forum
All Expansions (Dreadmere, Darkreach, Chronoscope, Lost Valley, Fan Favorites) are all in Bones Black. About half the Options are too. Give or take.
With KS4 delvering in a monthish people will start seeing how the new material compaires. Was smart of them to have an existing KSer delvier the new material as it will get a lot of reviews out there rather quickly.

I wonder if the recent Wizkids lines (Pathfinder battles, Nolzur's mini's, etc.) have had an influence on the material being used?

Sounds interesting, but I remain sceptical that a PVC mini can match a metal one (never mind a resin one) for sharpness and intricacy of detail.

I also hope this isn't the start of Reaper phasing out their metal minis altogether.

This smells like another Bones Black Kickstarter is on the way. I'm happy to hear that the expansions from the last Kickstarter will be in the new better material.

White was always a terrible choice. Hopefully this will make them competitive on quality with other manufacturers (like CMON)

Bones 4 is delivering soon, it is due to deliver starting in February, traditionally the next bones Kickstarter is a couple months after the current one delivers. So I expect bones 5 will follow that pattern.

Pretty disappointed in the free figure. If you want to promote the new material it should have been a few human sized characters as at the size for that Owlbear white bones really isn't bad.

I want to see how this stuff handles faces and weapons.

Well, you can't satisfy everyone -- including myself.

I still haven't painted my Bones KS owlbear, so no need for another one. Interestingly, the Bones Black owlbear is a buck more than the Bones version. I'm sure I'll end up waiting until Oct-Nov-Dec to see Reaper's promotions -- and I'm also sure the owlbear still won't be painted by then.

When's KS V gonna start?

Yes they have.
If you change the currency in their webshop to Pounds (or Euros, I think) it automatically takes you to their UK site.

Haven't used it myself yet. Was planning to, to get some of their Christmas minis, but the weird way it calculates VAT makes it more expensive to get their promo minis, so I didn't bother in the end.
Plus a big chunk of their catalogue isn't available on the UK site yet.

If I read properly, on the Reaper forums, the expansions, but not the Core, of Bones 4 will be in Bones Black.

So, in a way, the first Bones Black Kickstarter has already taken place.

And, yes, I think that the competition from WizKids is one of the driving forces.

And that is a good thing.

Yeah, they mentioned the Bones4 expansions will be Bones Black material. From Reaper's facebook comments It also sounds like Bones Black will be a new line, not just a revised PVC blend. They mention that it requires a slightly different type of mold so they can't just cast the older Bones stuff in Bones Black, which is unfortunate.

They also posted an unpainted Owlbear, which they really should have posted in the announcement as it's buried in the comments

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I should clarify, the new molds part is conjecture since they mentioned Bones Black will be a new line of new figures going forward, but we may see some of the old figures re-done in Bones Black. Reaper didn't specifically say they required different molds, but it sure sounds like there's a difference in how they're manufactured

with their restock issues with bones and this new material I almost wonder if this stuff is with a different producer? Otherwise how is going to bones black going to solve that issue since that was clearly a factory production slot issue

especially since the bases seem to have switched style too

This is partly why I'm annoyed Reaper never let people know Bones black was a thing before the pledge manager was closed. There are several things I passed up on in bones4 due to dislike of the material in the size of figure only now to find out many of those things are produced in a different material (which they had to know they were going to be using the pledge manger closed down). With bones it's kind of get it at KSer or hope it comes to retail in a reasonable amount of time as it can take 2 years for them to release something to retail and then you're just hoping they made enough that you can buy one.

Just speculation, but what was the latest on their in-house injection machine, Tommy the Train? Last I heard, they used it to make bases, but that was a long time ago. AFAIK, They only have one injection machine, but they could make additional models after their overseas producer makes the initial run of models?

Also, thanks to you and Kala for the owlbear promotional news and pics!

No, they're not being made in house

Are these being produced at the factory in Texas, then?
I asked ReaperRon the same question earlier on Facebook. I’ve quoted his reply below:

”Read it more like once we start making it, it will always be available. It won't come out in a Wave and then no longer be available. “

After my past experiences with bones and subsequently tossing them in the bin...I'll pay the extra £2-3 and go with metal every time.
Don't care if it's white, grey, black, purple or whatever.

Which were? I dunno what happened but Bones is excellent for big models and harvesting for parts for conversions. There's several conversions I couldn't have made pre-Bones due to the parts being too heavy and/or expensive.

I can definitely say first pass wasn't amazing. There's a few models from the first kickstarter that never hit production because of how lousy they turned out.

That said, I have the previous kickstarter and the minis are fine for anything short of show pieces, and look forward to seeing how some of the black pieces come out. If it's the same material as the blacksun power armored dudes it should be pretty good, honestly thought that was standard plastic.

Post by: ValentineGames

I don't recall the names of the characters. As I just bought them on a whim for £2.50 each.

I had an elven archer permanently leaning back a good 20 degrees that I was forced to replace the bow on.
I had a sorceress. Probably elven who had a sword bent back on itself a full 180 curve.
A daemon devil sorceress with a staff made from a spine which needed replacing with brass rod as it was warped and twisted.
A daemon girl with two daggers with so much flash it was impossible to clean.
And a Rogue stepping off a rock that needed both swords replacing with plastics and the face was just a blob.

In general I found the flash and mould lines extremely difficult to clean and in some cases so much and so thick damage was unavoidable.
The bent pieces I tried fixing with hot water and fridge.
Boiling water and fridge.
Boiling water and freezer.
Boiling water and room temperature.
But none of the twisting and bending was ever more than 25% repaired.

The inability to prime was...odd.
I tried painting without primer and paint flaked off.
I primed them just in case and paint still flaked off.
I had some success washing with Agrax and then priming...

But at this point I'd had the models for 2 or 3 weeks and only got the bare basics done on one model.

I picked up a metal Astrid (it was in the painting section but gathered zero interest so thread was deleted). Painted her in one evening.
Loved it.
Tossed the bones crap away.

Priming was odd, though there are several reaper paints, including their primer, that actually worked quite well but this was info you didn't know unless you hung around the forums.

Moldlines were the worst part about white bones as they just got fuzzy and harder to remove if you tired to clean them. Really turned me off to PVC plastics and restic (as around that time people had a real hate for them as well) in the past two years though I've come to really like both just not Bones as everyone else were better then what Reaper was putting out. Outside of small outfits I like to support, like Redbox, i'll rarely touch metal anymore. Horrible material for something you actually want to play with.

Post by: Gitzbitah

Did you wash them before painting? I've found that if you don't, they chip like crazy, but if they're well washed they hold on pretty well.

I did find you had to do some rebends with mine (Bones 3) but only ended up with one or two who were doing crazy leans.

I must admit I trolled their forums pretty hard in the months before my kickstarter was delivered, specifically because I heard that Bones would not respond to your normal painting techniques. Then too, I will never be more than a tabletop quality painter at my best, so I wasn't too concerned about the lack of hard details. If you're an awesome painter, I'd definitely stick to metals or boutique plastic.

Post by: Monkeysloth

Bones 1 had a lot of, well, trash quality human and smaller figures. Each subsequent KSer they got better, even tweaking their PVC formula some as there's no way Bones 1 and Bones 3 are the same material, but the white bones still has lots of flaws.

I think the Bones 1 quality really hurt them with a lot of people but you can fine some really nicely painted bones from pros -- they're just all very large figures that don't fall prone to most of the PVC Reaper used weaknesses.

I'm glad Reaper is wanting to improve as them staying successful is a plus for the miniature hobby as no one else does the scale of production they do with most of their stuff not being really for one game or another. But other manufacturers like Wizkids, CMoN and Monolith have really left them behind in quality.

Reaper 2019 News: Free Bones Miniature of the Month: Dark Dwarf Pounder @ 2019/01/04 01:43:24

Post by: highlord tamburlaine

I would concede CMON and Monolith surpassing them in detail (especially at regular human folk scale), but Wizkidsd?

I dunno about that one...some have been just as bad, if not worse, than some of those early Bones in terms of details folding in on each other.

I might put together an order just to try one of these things out though. Curious about it...

Reaper 2019 News: Free Bones Miniature of the Month: Dark Dwarf Pounder @ 2019/01/04 04:14:29

Post by: ced1106

Well, my thoughts about Reaper, CMON, Monollith, etc. is that they don't all make the same sculpts (or games!), so I'll pick up whichever company offers a sculpt I don't have at a reasonable price. I'm also an advanced tabletop painter who paints for gaming, so a good sculpt for a figure I need for a game is preferable over one that's higher quality but whose sculpt doesn't match. I'm kind of tired of using an ogre miniature when the scenario calls for a minotaur!

Still, I'm currently painting Tiny Furniture's resin miniatures, and will agree that metal and resin can blow away plastic. But resin and metal are more expensive, and I "need" a wide variety of miniatures for all sorts of gaming, so couldn't afford everything that I have in plastic in metal or resin. OTOH, If you're in the hobby to paint only a few figures, either for display or for your RPG character, then it's probably worthwhile to just buy a few miniatures, of higher quality.

I don't have much of Wizkids D&D but I do have a gnome druid and some rat swarms on my desk and both of these blow anything reaper has ever put into bones at that size out of the water. If you're talking about a different line, like Clix, then maybe. I haven't followed those in years but they were never impressive but that isn't the point of those figures.

I'm curious to see the side by side comparisons of the black vs white reaper bones once they hit the store shelves. I tend not to trust the cherry picked promo pics as even crappy kickstarted PVC products from 5 years ago looked good in those.

On prepping Bones - wash with dish soap and water - using an old toothbrush.

When cleaning mold lines and flash off - use the edge of a sharp hobby knife, and slice, not scrape the lines off.

I never had any problem resetting using hot water, so I have no idea what went wrong with Valentine's attempts.

All pretty much standard for any vinyl modeling.

The blobbiness... yeah, some of the early Bones are... less than stellar.

That said, I have hopes that Reaper can at least match, or nearly match, that of WizKids Deep Cuts line. (Extremely happy with the Deep Cuts and Nolzur's lines.)

Cygnwulf: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/84314-announcing-reaper-bones-black/&page=5

Got mine in today, so first impressions and a few pictures. I'm uploading straight from my phone so the pick dump will be at the end.

This new material is hard. There is virtually no flex at all, and it feels about like some resins I've worked with. He is all one piece, but with a separate sculpted base, so rather excited about that.

The color is darker that the previous 'grey' bones, which really shows off the fine detail in the feathers. In the second pic are Kord, in white bonsium, and part of kyphrixis in grey

Lastly he is a great intimidating size to face down your adventurers. Or Sir Forscale in a pinch.

Corsair:

No, it is not that easy to cut. This is a tough, hard material. Think more along the lines of an ABS plastic, I bounced this thing around and it is very tough, it will stand up to transport and use. I am thrilled that I found out new CAVs will be made from this. The few lines that needed to be trimmed were easily cut with a sharp Xacto knife.

CorallineAlgae:

Just got my order in! This new material is shockingly firm, :: and looks to have metal mini level detail. The mold lines are very minor and in easy places to remove, like along the ends of the arm feathers, the outside edges of the feet, across the brow of the face and up the ears. I haven't tried removing them yet, but with such a hard plastic it should be night and day easier than soft bones models. Most of them would be hard to notice on a painted figure without removing them at all. Like the others have said, I do with the left arm wasn't glued on at the factory. It's gonna be hard to get in there with a brush.

Overall, the new plastic looks even better than I had hoped. We're gonna need way more than one chunky figure to know what to expect from Bones Black. Cannot wait to see some BoBla characters minis. I already have quite a few of the Bones IV expansion minis in metal. Looking forward to priming them all up grey and comparing the figures side by side.

The new material looks quite good. I wonder if it's some variation of Trollforge restic?

I really wish they'd made us aware they were changing the mix for Bones 4... I would have actually added stuff to the pledge manager. As is I kicked in a buck to see the show, but I'd had my fill trying to wrangle decent paint jobs on man sized Bones figures where I couldnt even tell what half the detail was.

Doubt they would be manufacturing it in China if that was the case.

Interesting they went with that hard of a material as one of the advertised benefits of bones was how easy it is to cut up and kit bash.

They have a video on youtube showing them primed with lots of different primers like Army Painter as well as Krylon. So basically they haven't found one that it doesn't take.

Dunno yet about black bones, but here're some threads about Bones and spray primer. My guess is that the solvent in the spray primer is causing problems.

You can paint (including air brush) directly on Bones (white) plastic, although the plastic is hydrophobic. Brown liner is commonly recommended.

I'm a bit disappointed with the fact that they're made in China. I thought the regular bones line was made in the US. I don't have anything against Chinese manufacture (I'd be stuck buying nothing but lego figs and posting this from a 486 desktop if I did!) but it was a small plus that they were manufactured in the US (assuming I'm recalling that correctly).

They have a machine, named Thomas as it looks like a certain engine, for making bones in the US but their production volume is so high they can't keep up with the single machine they do have so a large volume is still made in china but there are many that are produced in the US.

Stick with (and pay for) metal and resin if you want MADE IN USA. Even then, check where the manufacturing is done. I do think I've seen plastic manufacturers in the USA, but that's only been a handful of times.

IIRC, Reaper casts plastic bases in USA, so you're good to go if you have an invisible army.

Preview for February's Free Bones Black Miniature of the Month: Troll!

Announcement: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/84739-february-bones-black-promotional-mini-rock-troll/

fwiw, A common comment about Bones is that it's good for large figures -- including by making them affordable -- while not as good for smaller ones. IIRC, Reaper said that a metal version of a Bones hill giant would cost $30 in metal. Yeah, I'm not paying that!

That's a cool sculpt but I'm still dumbfounded they're not giving away a bunch of human sized stuff so we can see the improvements.

Even with CMONs PVC the bigger stuff is better than the little stuff, so i'm sure that will be the case here too,

so give away bigger stuff that make the material look better (and it clearly is, not to put it down unnecessarily) and because people are more likely to put in an order to get a 'free' big monster than a random small sculpt

While I don't tend to bother with Bones infantry sized figures, their big beasties are superb in the material --- Black looks like it could be even better.

I really wish Reaper would either not texture their bases or make the sculpted texture a circle. The jagged/random shape of textured base is the worst of both worlds. You still have to use basing material and it is difficult to blend in the random texture shape, and you still have to purchase another base for the miniature!

Is “Bones Black” perhaps a rebranding to justify a price increase?

Agreed. Waiting to see what it's more comon in the black line the troll or the owlbear.

Well their keeping both lines and claim Black requires different tooling so they can't use the same molds so I'd say no.

On the original announcement facebook page they said they don't plan on remolding many white bone figures into black and they still plan on white for the largest of the large things as it's more affordable.

I don't think it's really worth the cost of the remold for most of the white line. After the first Bones KSer Bryan posted some figures for the costs of their molds:

http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/47575-plastic-injection-molds/&tab=comments#comment-675764

I can believe that a mold *can* cost $250k. But I know that so far we have not had a mold cost over $45,000. I think our cheapest mold was right around $18,000.

Going by the owlbear in me grubby mitts - it is a different material.

Harder, better detail, easier to clean off the flash - but there appears to be slightly more flash. And maybe a hair less unbreakable.

Think of it as a competitor for the unpainted minis from WizKids, rather than as a rebranding of the Bones line. (I like both the WizKids owlbear and the Bones Black owlbear. If absolutely forced to choose between two... I would have to give the WizKids owlbear a very, very slightly higher grade. Not even half a star. (WizKids owlbear 4.55 stars. Bones Black... 4.5.)

You were mistaken in the first place.

Bones minis are made in China. Reaper have bought a plastic injection machine with the intention of moving manufacturing to Texas, but so far the one machine is insufficient to fill the demand for Bones (they use their machine to produce their bases- so if you buy bases from Reaper, they're made in Texas).

Reaper's metal miniatures are all cast in their Texas facility (they'll give you a tour if you go to Reapercon).

Reaper has continued to have long term plans to move manufacturing of all their plastics to Texas, but I don't think we've seen a lot of progress on that front (at least not publicly). And with the size of the Bones line, it might take them a very long time before they make that switch.

And a serious capital investment - not to mention either hiring or training professionals to run the machines.

Pretty happy with my owlbear - it is both similar enough, and different enough, to the WizKids Nolzur's owlbear that they can be used together without looking like either completely different creatures or clones.

The Auld Grump - they will also be seeing use in my wife's Forces of Nature army in Kings of War.

Just to note, the bones black appears to be more susceptible to breaking (would required a lot of effort still) than their original bones material. I think it was stated in a video that they likely will keep both lines with the original bones being a better material for large sculpts. I am still waiting to see how human sized figures in bones black material will be (some of my kickstarter order should contain them).

Thanks for the clarification. I thought I remembered something from around maybe the first bones kickstarter that the plan was to have the initial fulfillment done in China for the Kickstarter pledges and some retail stock and then do restocks in the US. I just assumed after all the years that had happened.

With all this talk of Bones Black, Bones White and Bones Plaid it's easy to forget Reaper has models coming out in God's own casting medium METAL

The cat folk get some more fleshing out

Reaper also shows they're ahead of the curve with Jade Fire a new line of female orcs!

Because um... you demanded it?

Yeah let's go with that.

They can also serve as half orcs with some minimal conversion.

And um, some wererats. Y'know what would be cool a whole army of wererats with like plague rats and stuff. That would be amazing.

On the Bones White front we get a knight, riding a horse!

OK, yeah, well how about a Gnome Wizard!

He can also pass as a gnome illusionist with some small conversion work.

OK, still kind of meh, I hear you. That's why I saved one for last...

Now first I want to say as a properly woke citizen of the 21st century I am not a fan of Reaper appealing to the lowest common denominator with scantly clad or even nude models being sold for their sex appeal but I think in this case we can all agree it is entirely appropriate.

Spoiler:

The mighty mudgullet!

A bit pricey at $30 but if that's what you need, there ain't too much competition.

In all a bit of a meh month for me. Yeah I'm sure somewhere there's a gaming group exploring a swamp with a female orc barabarian and a gnome wizard whose ship has finally come in, but nothing really calls out to me.

I love this idea of rolling out the product gradually, not the least of which is because it lets them identify and correct any production errors likely to occur with black, and also to enable their sculptors to work out the limits of what the material can do. I do really hope we see some human sized models before the inevitable Blackstarter.

Putting product in your consumers hands, for free, before you try to sell it is an awesome strategy.

Also they're starting with EU shipments first, looks like they're trying to rush to beat a potential No Deal Brexit which I think is the right thing to do. No telling how long that could end up delaying EU shipments if they don't finish before the deadline next week (and there's no extension).

Reaper thread on Bones Black. : http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/83709-bones-black-questions/&page=3

"I don't think it quite has the detail of metal or resin, but it is a LOT closer than regular Bones, and not a huge step down from metal. It took to a sharp Xacto readily. It was better with a file than regular Bones, but not as good as metal or resin. There were a lot of mold lines to deal with; about what I'd expect from a metal figure. The base concept is amazing, and I want to see all minis made with this concept in mind. However, the injection point could use work. It had some indents on the base, instead of pokey-outies. The owlbear could use some work on the mold/injection where feathers within the wing meet each other. Kinda looks slightly crusty in there. Not a lot but it is almost like it got taken out of the mold before it was fully cooled and pulled the corner. Not enough to really be an issue on painting, but it is an area of non-smoothness in an otherwise smooth area. A lot of folks probably like that he's preassembled, but if the pieces are well fit, I think it may be better to have him unassembled to send. It would make mold line removal easier, and reaching arm/wing-pits with a brush easier. Still, this is a huge improvement on Old Bones. Downside is that Sir Cyr really is not going to want to step on this one. Not Lego levels of pain yet, but it isn't going to be springy like Old Bones. Reaper's going to have a heck of a place on the market with beasties out of this stuff. Bones in general is affordable, but this is close to closing the gap between Old Bones and metal. I think a bunch of people will enjoy it when they didn't like Old Bones. " -- Cyradis

"It is far closer to a polystyrene in feel and detail than the previous material, which is closer to a PVC used in plumbing." -- Corsair

Summary of latest KS update : "That last container that's been causing grief is still making its slow-pokey way to them. The container has parts for three items - Tree of Despair, Baba Yaga's Hut, and I believe the Frost Giants - folks who've ordered those items are having the rest of their orders pulled and set aside to wait for the container, while everyone else is seeing their orders moved along normally. The last Kickstarter, they shut down their operations for a few days to focus on fulfilling the Kickstarter, and ended up regretting it: it's VERY bad for business, and this Kickstarter was something like 30% bigger and thus it's even more impossible to shut down again; so, this time, they're keeping operations open and doing the Kickstarter thing at the same time - the result is that fulfillment will run a little slower this Kickstarter than it did last time. Some of us may have some ideas about sneaky ways to get their orders shipped faster, such as canceling some items or paying extra to rush the orders, etc., and they want to assure us that, due to the complexity of fulfillment, there's no way those tricks will speed anything up (if for no other reason than trying to find your specific order among the vast number they're managing will be completely impractical) - so, things ship according to the schedule, and there's no way to pull strings to speed your order up." -- Thanks to Whateley

Know not of what you speak, do I.

Like I said, I like this figure - but then I pretty much had an idea for an NPC for a fantasy cops game I am planning, as soon as I saw him. (Danny Glover's voice may be involved.)

An orc priest that is old enough to remember the old ways, and wise enough to not miss them. (The city in the campaign is ridiculously integrated - the police captain is a beholder. And good at his job.)

I want the PCs to get to know him, get to like him... and then I will have him murdered.

The very first adventure has them dealing with orcs - when they get a report of orc and dwarf gangs in armor gathering for battle. The older cops not letting the rookies know that the same lady has made the same report every year for the past ten - the orcs and dwarfs are in armor, but have no weapons... moving a leather ball around a defined area may be involved. And neither all the orcs nor all the dwarfs are on the same team. (Steel Workers versus Meat Packers.... Plenty of each in both industries.)

This old guy is going to be the medic on hand.

I posted a Kickstarter message to Reaper asking about when the weapon sprues from the last Kickstarter campaign would be released and got this reply:

"We will not be releasing the clear options. They were too hard too cast. The gray sprues will be released while supplies last and then will be discontinued. This should happen any time now."

So that's disappointing.

IIRC, One of the updates says that the sprue layouts were wrong. Something like instead of one of each weapon on a sprue, they put two of half of the weapons on one sprue, and needed a second sprue for the other half. Also, I remember reading that Reaper didn't have the packaging for the sprues??

Too bad. The weapon sprues were very useful for multipiece 28mm figures from various companies that had the hand and weapon separate, and didn't include the weapon that you wanted. Some game rules distinguish between types of weapons (eg. axe vs. spear) and many rule distinguish ranged weapons vs. melee.

Mebbe ask for them on the Bones request thread on the Reaper forums?

If I had to guess I bet that the thin nature of the weapons/sprue with nothing more substantial to push on (like a body) getting out them out of the mold meant a bunch of breakage/tearing so lots of expensive QC selecting good sprues with all the stuff still on them

(that's assuming they were done in basic bones rather than bones black)

Reaper 2019 News: Free Bones Miniature of the Month: Dark Dwarf Pounder @ 2019/04/04 13:02:23

Post by: ced1106

They're hard plastic, not the vinyl Bones plastic. They were part of the Bones 3 KS, so this was before Bones Black. Can also confirm that there are two copies of a weapon on a sprue.

Now, I'm wondering why Reaper doesn't put out multipiece kits, like Northstar (Frostgrave) does. I know they're targeting the RPG market (which includes players who want the pieces pre-assembled and don't paint them), but the skirmish and rank and file markets have cash, too...!

Post by: ced1106

Good question. I also sorta remember that, if it wasn't for KS backers, they wouldn't have even made a print run. But you'd think, by now, the correct sprues would have been made! I would have thought that the Chinese company that designed the sprues / created the molds would swallow the cost, but, if Reaper made or accepted the error so has to pay for a new set of molds, they might put the whole project aside, not bother with a print run with the old molds, and wait for KS 5 to fund for revised weapon sprues. No idea!

EDIT: Reapermill says packaging problems 'cuz they want the sprues to be with the blisters on the rack. : http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/83697-armory-sprues-a-one-off/

that makes a lot more sense, if they don't fit in the standard packaging (because the doubled up?) I can see why retail for stores isn't going to work

that shouldn't matter for direct sales but it could well be enough to make another run uneconomic compared to something else, and if they did make them available direct but not to retail some retail partners might worry they'd loose sales from people buying the weapons & other bones while they were there

There are a few Bones minis that they sell at conventions in bags because they could not get packaging to work for retail. I'm thinking the same will happen with those weapon sprues.

I'm not sure if you can get those from Reaper's webstore (probably you can).

I wonder if those won't ever see a second run, though.

Bones overseas packing for shipping complete!

Previous update said they need to prepare for packing to the US, which will be done in a warehouse (?) across the street. Shipping should start April 8th. They have some but not all of the "Baba Yaga's Hut, Tree of Despair, and Frost Giant Raiders" models, and expect the rest on the 16th. This should not be noticeable to US backers, though. Worst case is that "Once the stock on hand is depleted, we will continue pulling all orders that do not contain these missing items. Once the container arrives (see below) we will go back and pull all orders that contain those items."

This KS had 30% stuff than their previous one (!). Rumormill is that the next KS will have fewer larger miniatures. Random guess is that, with Bones Black, they knows can make smaller miniatures, while, during the KS 4 campaign, they knew original Bones was better (and more cost-effective) for larger miniatures.

I also read that, instead of glue, they fit pieces together while the plastic was still cooling. However, this resulted in some noticeable gaps, such as in some of the efreeti models (see last month's freebie).

Unfortunately, it can take months or longer before it hits retail. However, check the KS3 miniatures to see if they're available! Was there a particular miniature you had in mind?

No official date for KS5. ): Pure speculation is later this year! Save up your C-Notes! The core set is $100, each expansion (eg. Dreadmere, Fan Favorites, etc.) is $50, and smaller add-ons vary.

Just a word: I got my KS shipment yesterday. I don't know if I got a bad batch of the new bones black material, but I had several miniatures where either a weapon or a wrist had snapped. It does definitely hold detail better than the regular bones, and Reaper's excellent customer service already has me taken care of, so I would definitely call bones black an improvement, but it may come with a small tradeoff on how bendy vs brittle the miniatures are.

My guess is that it was just a small poorly mixed batch or something, since other miniatures from the same material were just as flexible as the white material.

I'm shocked at how heavy the wings are on some of those models. The demons and devils, jeez, some of them are going to need to be seriously weighted down due to both the size and weight of their flying appendages.

I'll back for a few things but the Bones has so much stuff that even the core pledge doesn't really seam much of a value to me as there's usually only a couple items in the core set that I need/want and I'm too lazy to part things out to sell and I've probably only ever painted 10 bones things ever the material from the first KSer was horrible and turned me off to it for most things.

No official statement on what will be Black vs White bones. Does seam like all the human sized stuff will be Black. I've got a few of them on my to paint list so hopefully I'll get to that before the kser to see what I think of it (probably will like it though)

Brining in some Larry Elmore stuff from Darksword minis for Bones V from the sounds of it.

Also they mentioned briefly they are building more factory space and have ordered plastic injection machines to bring more production to the us. Very cool as I know this has a very long term goal for them.

It may take me years to get through all the unpainted Bones I still have but I can't really complain about more.

I've paid off every campaign by painting up a few models that I wasn't super interested in and selling them off for a reasonable price.

I'm definitely going to sit this one out. The mini quality is just too low to excite me and you have to pay two years in advance which makes it hard to figure out what you actually want. Plus I am in the process of doing a lot of gap filling on models from the last Kickstarter...easy to pass up.

My KDM and Dark Sword miniatures are still waiting for me to be competent enough to paint them.

At least with the lower quality, mass quantity stuff, I can find then blow through and assembly-line paint enough miniatures for next week's game and not feel too bad about it.

I haven't looked at a Bones Kickstarter since seeing people generally "meh" about the first one. I was also really turned off by the first one because of the random sporadic shotgun nature of the minis you got. Have they adapted to allowing "themed" purchases via the Kickstarter?

The first one was just too spastic: "You can have dungeon minis...oh and some star troopers! Did you want chibis? How about some trash cans to go along with the chibis!" etc. Has that changed in the past couple of Kickstarters or is it steal a massive grab-bag of random gak?

I buy quite a few Bones minis even now, and will continue to do so.

The main pledge is still mostly like that, but I think they at least seperated out all the sci-fi stuff last time. There are also some tightly focused $50 expansions, last time it was:
- sci-fi stuff
- swamp stuff
- underdark stuff
- prehistoric stuff

You can also always select things from the main pledge piecemeal, tho obviously the discount is gonna be less than if you get the whole crate.

In Bones IV, I just ordered big monsters and then multiples of some specific sets like Wraiths, Snakemen and Ghost Pirates to use for Kings of War regiments. Even with that kind of piecemeal order, with shipping and EU import duties it was a much better deal than getting the same stuff at retail.

I'm in no rush the minis, so it's likely I'll still settle for waiting for commercial release. Bones are so reasonably priced I don't have an issue missing out on the KS discounts.

Mmm... sort of.

As Lord said, they have some themed $50 expansion sets. The smaller add-ons are themed. The main set is still random.

Some Reaper fans skipped the main set for the smaller add-ons for the same reason posters here did.

I *really* liked their Dreadmere expansion, perfect for Saltmarsh and other ne'er do well dockside goodness...

Spoiler:
City Dock Kit by Gallladoria Games, and Cobblestone Mat by Loke Battlemats.

Raft, boat, and unpainted miniatures from Reaper Dreadmere set.

having finally gotten around to cleaning up and painting some of the bones black promo figures my local store gave me, I think I like them. The female with the crossbow looks about as good as the metal one I painted years ago. It's a bit closer to board game plastic, but not like the mantic/privateer grey "restic" garbage.

I hate having a backlog so I'll definitely be skipping the kickstarter, but I'm definitely a fan of the idea of more of the line shifting to the slightly harder grey pvc without it being the mantic type stuff.

Well I got around to starting on a human-sized Bones Black miniature. As expected it's slightly better than normal Bones, and still terrible compared to metal. It's also grey and not black. However, looking forward to it crisping up some of the larger monsters a bit. Normal 28mm sized figures will probably still be a no-go for me in Bones Black.

Just opened my Bones 4 pledge. It turns out that Bones Black is only actually "Dark Grey" in a very dimly lit room. At night. With sunglasses.

But more importantly, are there a bunch of special snowflake rules to painting them and not having the paint flake off or become a tacky mess? Can we prime or seal them with sprays lke other models? Or do we still have to start with a layer of shellac/thinned liquid greenstuff/brown liner/magic dust and then seal them only with paint-on Reaper(tm) brand sealer?

Because I've got a giant fething treeman here I want to start on, and spray cans would seem the most sensible way to do all of those things, rather than using two full bottles of ReaperHD brown as the base coat...

I normally didn't have problems with Bones - until recently. I primed a Bones Giant and did have it turn all tacky and awful. I powered through it, but it was alarming.

Some spray can primers don't play nice with bones. Airbrushing or brushing on vallejo's primers works great though. Apparently a misting with testor's dullcoat also works well.

Yeah, the questions are about the new Bones Black - I'm well aware and versed in how gakky regular bones is to work with.

Basically, is there any difference wih Black/does it work with sprays/is it easier to work with using regular paints/does it still become tacky?

I don't have a "larger" Bones Black figure yet to really say. My first small one took primer fine, but it took primer that works on other Bones stuff, so I'm not counting that.

Reaper 2019 News: Free Bones Miniature of the Month: Dark Dwarf Pounder @ 2019/08/08 06:48:08

Post by: Azazelx

Nod. I've gotten around the stickiness on the original formula (most of the time, anyway) but it's a real pain. If the new stuff is less horrible to work with, I'd prefer to use normal mini-painting methods over special snowflake ones.

Reaper 2019 News: Free Bones Miniature of the Month: Dark Dwarf Pounder @ 2019/08/08 06:51:27

Post by: frozenwastes

I totally agree. I've largely switched to airbrushing primer so I just did the bones black miniatures I got the same way. You definitely don't need special sealer or paint though. Normal works there. I used P3, Vallejo, Army Painter and Citadel on them. For sealer I have some I brushed on vallejo, others I airbrushed on some artist matte varnish, and another I sprayed with krylon matte.

The only mystery appears to be spray priming.

Bones doesn't need primer.

It makes sense if they are more like board game plastic and less soft and bendy that rattle cans would work.

Was there a list somewhere of what in Bones 4 was supposed to be the new, amazing Bones Black and what was regular old crappy bones (now in light grey!)
I'm still in the process of going through my pledge, and the quality seems to be ...worse and more toy-like than before overall - oversized, soft details galore on the larger models, which was where previous Bones campaigns have had their best models. With WizKids on the block now doing relatively inexpensive but high quality PVC, Bones looks like gak by comparison.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet......

Bones 5 will start on October 2, not September as originally announced. They figured that with ReaperCon, Pathfinder paints, and Bones 5 all starting at relatively the same time, it wasn't a good idea.

The latest Reaper Live mentions this - there is also a count down timer behind them that shows "53 days.....etc)

This month's free Bones Black miniature of the month is finally up.

Reaper typically has an October promotion, so if this month's miniature isn't a must-have, wait for October.

I looked through the New Releases, and noticed that some Bones IV miniatures are for sale, some using Bones Black. Backers got the older Bones white material. The MSRP of the Bones miniatures in the store are about 3x that of the KS. So for the upcoming Bones V, if you only want a few miniatures, retail will still work. But if you want a bulk purchase, KS will still be better, depending on shipping.

Bit of a correction - While the Core set was in the white Bones material for Bones IV, the expansions were in Bones Black - All the ones shown as New Releases for June were in Black for the KS. (And I have all of them. Dreadmere was my favorite for Bones IV, Darkreach was my second favorite - almost all of the new releases come from those two expansions. Darkreach got divied up between my wife and I.)

It's worth noting that sometimes retailers are even better stocked or faster to list stuff than the main page. I've occasionally found more new releases on eBay sellers than on the Reaper page. Only maybe by a couple of days, but worth glancing around eBay if you have something particular in mind. I don't mean Kickstarter buyers, but actual retail outlets.

Reaper Bones V KS starts tomorrow!

12pm CST or check the Reaper homepage for when it starts in your time zone. : https://www.reapermini.com/

When the KS goes live, if anyone wants to post the KS link and core set image, go for it.

Waves fill up within hours, but, iirc, the shipment time between waves wasn't very long.

I think with Bones IV, you got the miniatures at 1/3 the price of retail. From previous Dakka comments, I get the impression that those waiting for retail waited several weeks after backers received their models (?).

All I’m hearing is the song from the little mermaid (god I’m so old that it was me watching it not my kids ) Les Poissons.
I’ll have to base him with a scuttling crab or some chopped up fish.
