Welcome all to the 63rd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favourite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.
This month, the theme is Old School Cool. Lots of you have been asking for a chance to get out your retro minis, and this round for them! If you don't have any older models, fret not, the theme also extends to ones that have been sitting on your to-do pile the longest, or that represent something aged, outdated or historical in the setting from which they originate.
How To Enter
- This month, you may enter up to five models as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama - You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting. - After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win? - Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have? This challenge begins 1st of May and will end at midnight UK time on the 31st of May. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Shokkjump Buggy (Shokkjump Dragsta is the original model)
Not the most retro, but I have had the model about 15 years or so. I have a use for it in my my DnD campaign, so it’s my entry for the month: Witch King on Fellbeast:
Not 100% sure at themoment, but as I'm currently doing some work on these old school sentinels I'll try and get one or both done for this. May sub in something else...
Throwing my hat into the ring with this one, too, fellas.
I don't know if I'll even get remotely close to finishing this - seems like the lockdown wave could hit here any day. Who knows. On top of that I've got some ambitious ideas (and I'm full of cheap wine right now, ooh la la).
But I'm staring down the barrel of a 5 day national holiday where we're all supposed to just stay home, followed by coming back the following Thursday to find out what the hell is happening this month. As such, I'm probably going to have a bit of free time.
So, my entry, is a model only a few months younger than myself, as far as I'm aware. Picked her up second hand a little while ago, and I've been wondering how to fix 'er up and add her to my Genestealer cult.
Wish me luck. I think I'll need it. Or maybe more wine... wonder if やまや is still open...
If anyone (I guess in Japan?) has any genestealer arms just lying about, needing a home... I have an offer.
Some pretty old models considering its 2020, also had them for 11 years and recently re-stripped. Plus, Terminator Armour is old, right?
@Para, did you mean to put in that this month is "as many models as you like?" Just wondering because in the other thread you said back to 5 limit and just want to double check!
I'm in with some ancient Harlies. Got those off eBay a while ago as these are different models than the ones from the Harlies box I already got as a teen in the 90ies ... and the minis from the box set are either already painted or half-painted or I can't find them right now, so here we go ^^
I got the enthusiasms today, it seems. Grabbed this guy who was sitting on my painting desk for a while (and who'd been hanging around unprimed for at least five years and three moves), took a proof pic:
and managed to motivate myself to just paint him straight through in about two and a half hours:
"The Gor-Gor" from Reaper miniatures Dark Heaven Legends line. I suspect he's a decently old sculpt as well, though I can't figure out where I could find that information, having lost the blister he came in.
Will probably replace these photos later in the month, now I see them full size blown up I didn't realize how out of focus they were, but if I don't, they'll do well enough as final pics. Definitely willing to hear what bits I screwed up or could do to make him come out better.
Oi! Some of us are still figuring out what to paint....coming in here with your finished work.
I'd say a bit more work around the face would bring him up a notch. The eyes could stand out more, maybe change tones a little on the ears and the horn - although those are really dependent on how you view them with regards to the anatomy of a horned zoat rhinotaur.
I'd like to throw my hat in. The model isn't exactly old, but he represents something quite old. I'll go with just one Thunder Warrior. I'm still working through the modeling process of more, but I think this guy is about 90% done with modelling and looking for some paint.
I got a bit excited and started, to my horror my stupid AP can ran out of propellant, there is still paint in the can but I dont have any butane to refill the paint can (yes it can go wrong if the receiver doesn't close after you remove the gas)
Damn, so much choice! I have some old inquisitor models, some vintage lord of the rings stuff, and a few talisman bits, but they're going to have to wait because this month is all about chaos dwarves! Always wanted to do some CD. These guys are going to be part of a fantasy squad for next year's Golden Demon. I'm hoping to finish 3 of the 5 this month, and am pushing non metallic metals hard this year. Re entering the daemonsmith I didn't paint last month. New photo for proof, hope that's alright.
Here are some 6mm scale "VF-1A Valkyrie" models, from Palladium Books' Robotech RPG Tactics line. The robots can transform into different modes, so each of these models represents the same vehicle, just transformed. These miniatures are relatively recent, from 2014, but the mecha designs are from the 1982 anime Super Dimension Fortress Macross, so I think they qualify as "Old-School Cool."
I think there's another dive into the cardboard archive before I commit, but these two groups are the frontrunners right now. One is classic Arbites, the other is mostly 2nd ed. "guard" and "adventurers" with the model from the Chainsaw Warrior game in the mix. Who knows, maybe I do both and choose later?
I got these Chaos Centaurs when they were new, but as you can see, they've seen better days. If I get them done in time, I'll tackle the Chaos Champion, as well.
I'm going to stick my hat in with an old Season 2 (so, first expansion from about 6 or 7 years ago) Dreadball team, the Chromium Chargers (transforming robots). They've been sitting in pieces for ages: they're arguably the worst team in the game, and couldn't muster the energy to build them, let alone paint them! I'll submit 5 of them, though I'll be doing the full team. Unless I lose the will to live, and I throw in some unloved Dreadball cheerleaders or old metal Batman figs. Pics to follow, I guess
Automatically Appended Next Post: Mix of old figs, including the very first dB promo, Hector Weiss (Speedball 2 character)
Pile of bot parts, in classic Video Case Db storage.
Oh, this one is for me I want to join to competition with a pack of old death guard minis. There's a squads of plague marines, terminators, a chaos dreadnought, champ and mage. This is a part of my friends army, so it will be painted on tabletop level.
As I’m starting a new paint job that seems to fit this months challenge I thought I’d put my hat in the ring with these 2.
I hope they fit the criteria as they only have only a single colour over the primer when I started on them this evening. No worries if not, I’ll still enjoy painting themes much as much as I did as an excited spotty teenager!
I'm going to take part this month with a mix of old and new with the Old being some GW Crusaders and the new being the SOB Sisters Repenta.
Trying to kitbash some more Crusaders but they will be a bonus if I manage it
Also going to throw in the Kitbashed Crusader I just knocked together. Its a bit ropey and i might try to shave the sheild down but I couldn't resist adding a plague doctor masked crusader to the list considering the time. .
I'll probably put up a proof pic tomorrow, but my current plan is to paint the contents of the old "Heroes of the Adeptus Astartes" set. Metal models for Marneus Calgar, Azrael, Dante, Logan Grimnar, and The Emperor's Champion. I think they are sufficiently old models to qualify. Azrael and Calgar even have the old-style banner poles, meaning I'll have to find and print banners for them (the current Azrael model has a sculpted banner but is otherwise identical).
I refuse to open my stuff in blister packs. I have the first metal necron with the white dwarf it came with, and a RT era terminator. I'm not usually one for the whole geek, not opening boxes thing but I cant with these.
Viterbi wrote: Cool theme and the perfect excuse to paint those mild-mannered men of the cloth to accompany my equally non-zealous Sisters into battle.
Really looking forward to seeing what you do with these. Considering ordering them
Thinking of taking part with this. It's a conversion I did a couple of months ago from the shokkjump dragsta kit. Been waiting for the right time.
The base model is far from old and definitely not a classic. But maybe you could say that in the world of 40k a mad maxey style vehicle powered by a good old carbureted V8 engine is... classic tech?
I might figure out something else. If I do, I will post a new proof pic.
Or if this entry is not sufficient for the theme.
Okay, as promised here's the proof:
2 concerns:
1) Logan Grimnar's armor was basecoated previously but I never got any further on the model. I can still enter it since it's only one color right?
2) Technically Azrael is 2 models since he's accompanied by his helm bearer. Do I need to leave out the helm bearer for my final entry so that it's 5 models?
I'm pretty much set on fire dragons, though I've got so many eldar models I want to paint. The good thing about collecting eldar is that virtually all the models could be considered retro! And by "good", I mean "update the damned line, GW!!!"...
Think this might be time for my annual entry. One of mine is enjoying an isopropyl bath, so I'll post proof tomorrow after he's been scrubbed and both are based.
Here's my proof pic and a little progress pic too. Harlequins of the masque of the soaring spite. Pretty sure these are the oldest models I have, they are stamped 1988 but I bought them 3 or 4 years ago.
Going for a couple of quartered schemes and diamond schemes where I can. This is my first time painting Harlequins so feedback and tips especially appreciated for this month.
Well, I thought the theme was going to be more retro than aged, outdated or historical, so my original idea to do Sally Starfield from Bombshell Miniatures will remain on the backburner for now.
Spoiler:
Which means I had to look for other options - and preferably not more Chaos Warriors or Chaos Marauders/Thugs. I could go head to head with previous (monkeytroll) or current (Snrub, JoshInJapan) entries:
Spoiler:
More likely I'll do one of these, leaning towards a Chaos Sorcerer:
The more I work with these miniatures, the less I'm impressed with them. It's going to take a long time to get these to the standard that I can more easily achieve with Citadel miniatures. I have a lot to paint, so I think I'm going to try to find short-cuts whenever possible.
For these, I primed them with Citadel Wraithbone, then shaded with Contrast Apothecary White, then drybrushed them with Vallejo Dead White. I'm reasonably satisfied with this stage. Here's a WIP picture.
So, had some pretty bellicose, outlandish ideas when I first bought this mini. Parts in hand? Looks like some of those ideas just might not be feasible...
...however. First batch of parts I got off of a Japanese second hand site just landed. Initially, I hadn't planned to include the torso - I was hoping a little to hang on to it, as it also came with a 'nid Warrior(?) head. Just for funsies, because I wanted to extend the torso/shoulders, I test-fitted it and...
...I think it works? I'm gonna hold off until those those final parts land. Should be tomorrow or Saturday. Nothing major, really. I also repaired some cosmetic damage at the temples, by adding some neat little mandible/antennae/psyker dongers. I quite like 'em.
Paradigm wrote: Arakasi, that retro mini is totally a fair interpretation of the theme if you'd prefer to paint it,
That's okay - I've decided to go in a completely different direction entirely! May I present my proof of Manfred, Heroic Fighter of the Known World (BC7, 1985):
(That's a 20mm base for size.)
Okay, 9 days in and the sentinels are still being built (still playing with various bits). That gives me no hope that I could finish even one at my rate, so bringing in my substitute.
Chaos sorceror, who I'm going to try and make sure I do i a different scheme to the two champs from last month..
Ah, that's a pretty paint scheme, too! Yeah I guess adapting the current, more uniform masque colours for these guys & gals is the way to go, I kept getting back to the 80ies paint schemes but the more I looked the less I understood what's going on there ... might be a reason that there seem to be quite some unpainted Rogue Trader era Harlies around
Think I'll go with these vintage XV15-pattern Stealth Suits - realised I had three of one pose, two of another, plus a third unique pose, so something had to change. Soon two will have fusion blasters, one will have a new head (I'd love to use a Breachers head, but I only have Pathfinder heads spare).
Trying to get started a bit earlier this month.
It is quite cool seeing people's old models - many of them bring a stir or nostalgia. I'm sure I have some of those harlies, Jamie, MobileSuit and felt...and I WISH I had those chaos warriors, Arakasi!
For my own, it was the old dioramas that first inspired my imagination and made me interested in minis - you know, the ones with bright green flock and trees from model train sets. I remember looking at them and thinking they so perfectly captured fantasy worlds. So, that is what I am going to try to do: a small diorama. I'm even going to try to find some old flock!
I'm trying to decide if I want to do a Bretonnian or a Dungeons and Dragons vignette....I'll get back to everyone when I know!

That's an amazing model. I really want to get but so expensive on ebay! Is that resin?
Nice work so far everyone. We've got a little squad of metal Harlequins painters, which is nice. I'm not doing a colour scheme as such, I'm going to try to replicate the old Harlequin paintjobs from the 80s that I loved when I was a kid but could never get close to doing.
queen_annes_revenge wrote: That's an amazing model. I really want to get but so expensive on ebay! Is that resin?
Failcast! I dug out this and a few other classic models while reorganizing and filtering my pile of shame the other day and thought it'd be perfect for this challenge!

I just won one on ebay for almost half of what everyone else is charging. Needs a bath and scrub but it's metal so easy job!
Okay Old-School Cool Kids, I found a bunch of classic paper-sticker banners. If anyone needs them for the classic Marines you're rebooting for this round, let me know... they're mostly Imperial from the mid-to-late 90s, probably 3rd edition. Lots of bikes for some reason, dreads, and a few infantry back banners, plus a little Eldar flavor. I also have a bunch of waterslides from that era, but those might be pretty rotten by now, who knows?
If you're within easy mailing of Colorado, USA, PM me and I'll drop something in an envelope for you.
So sitting at home on furlough I though I'll give my old minis a shot.
As far as I remember that is a Mordheim Witch, but she will be leading my Warcry Undead pack once done

Lucky! While I do enjoy how amazingly light this model is (it feels like I'm holding nothing at all), I would have preferred metal. Would've made my prep stage so much easier.

Yeah there are pros and cons to each. I quite like resin because it's easier to get all the mold lines, and if you get a half decent fine cast they still look pretty good. I find that wihh metal I often miss mild lines that pop up when I hit it with the primer.
wow, that was quick. I like the fine art painterly style too, with the more visible brush strokes. I've always wanted to try doing a model like that, but my OCD always kicks in and I spend hours smoothing all the transitions anyway.
Very cool challenge, and I'd like to join in if it's still possible?!
I begun working on a suitable model earlier this May. None other than the good old Ikit Claw! So here's a few WIP pics, the last ones taken this morning.
Couple more layers to go on the robes and 'armour/mask' combo. Blue eyes will not be blue, likely gold or silver. Still debating sword and furs. Furs I'm thinking I might attempt a cheetahs spot pattern, but in tiger orange.
And just to add to the retro-goodness I decided he needed an old-school familiar...
Pariah Press wrote:DV8, Valten looks great! I love the hammers especially, and the stripey trousers are a classic touch.
Thanks! Yea when I started the piece I was in a striped pants mood and I wanted to inject a little more color into the piece, so it was fun to do! There's a bit of Prince Adams in the colors...kinda wish I'd made the pants purple and lavender...

Thanks QAR! Yea I've honestly been in love with a much quicker, more textural style lately. I can do smooth blends, but it takes much longer and I lose interest in it so quickly. I do need to work on polishing up my NMM more though, especially on blades. Sometimes I'm too rough and liberal with the texture.
Your Chaos Dwarves are looking good too! Can't wait to see the set!
monkeytroll wrote:Man, fast work on Valten DV8!
(Un)fortunately I am stuck at home and not working, so I have plenty of time to hobby. At least my pile of shame is shrinking rapidly!
I'll be painting these figures up as a combat squad.
They're old, but they're not super old. So to increase the retro factor the plan is to paint them with these paints (which are super old)...
...and to follow the painting guide in this pamphlet (which is so old it's probably a historical document by now).
Looking good so far everyone! Loving the old school vibes.
Some progress done. Been base coating all the different parts.
It has been really slow so far, so I'm not even sure I'll get this finished before the end of the month
I'm a bit sad that I don't have any unpainted old school models around for this one.
Those that I have, have been painted some 15 years ago and I don't want to repaint my first miniatures.
My younger self did not appreciate them that much, so some of them were sold a decade ago. Stupid me.

I still reference that book from time to time. Classic. Also still have a lot of the old pots in active use.
Nevelon wrote: I still reference that book from time to time. Classic. Also still have a lot of the old pots in active use.
I was really impressed that the the pots I unearthed were still useable. With one exception they were good as new. Nice RTB01s by the way.
I thought I had the right colours to paint my marines as retro Blood Angels, but it turned out I didn't and my attempt to substitute some of the colours went awry. Then I discovered that I did have the right colours to paint them as retro Space Wolves.
Below is a WIP picture together with the picture from the Space Marine Painting Guide that I am using as a reference.
Strangely, the guide recommends drybrushing the armoured parts of the model with the highlight colour, but on a helmeted marine that's the whole model. The result, after two coats and enough paint wiped off the brush for a third, is a bit like weathering, or a winter camo wash. Kind of chalky, and nothing like the reference image which doesn't actually look drybrushed. Still, I'm happy enough with the figure so far to continue it.
The guide images never look like what a model painted using the advice looks like, because they aren't painted the same way. They're painted with many layers using feathering, blending and edge highlighting. not drybrushing.
queen_annes_revenge wrote: The guide images never look like what a model painted using the advice looks like, because they aren't painted the same way. They're painted with many layers using feathering, blending and edge highlighting. not drybrushing.
Painting guides of that era were also notorious for simple 3 step procedures.
Haha if only it were that simple! Even now the guides are only very basic beginner steps. You're best finding amazing painters who's style you like and see if they do tutorials.

I envy people starting the hobby these days. So many more resources out there to help them.
So, after (ahem) experimenting with three different color schemes, I stripped four of the six models down to the primer and started them over. It's halfway through the month, and this is how far I've come. Not sure I'm gonna finish in time...

You've set yourself up for one heck of a challenge with these models. Maybe cut your entry down to one set rather than two?]

That's what I suspected. I think the Blood Angels in that guide actually do follow the techniques it suggests, but like you say with a lot more going on than the bare bones approach described. I might try the techniques recommended for the Blood Angels again with Space Wolf colours, but first I need to show my brushes some TLC since they're old and forking terribly.

With not a whole lot of detail between the steps.
Too true.

Other than "They're awesome, paint more"? If I was nitpicking, in the big gallery image the contrast between the base and highlight on the palamino centaur's hair looks a little harsh in places, and the bracelets the cyclops centaur is wearing kind of blend in with its skin colour. Other than that, they're great, and I like the way the colour schemes make them look like coherent creatures rather than human(oid)s spliced with horses.
Some cracking stuff so far! All these retro schemes and minis capturing a wonderful nostalgia, it's like a potted history of the hobby's evolution over the years.

That's good advice. I'll concentrate on getting half of them done by the deadline.
This weekends progress. I have attempted some diamonds, pretty happy with the power sword pony tail one but will probably go back to quartered for the others.
So, work has jumped up on me this month and I'm only just getting round to some proper painting. I was going to paint a squad of 2nd ed fire dragons (I still might) and I had two different possible schemes in mind, but I'm worried I'm running out of time. I'm now wondering if some dire avengers, or even just the exarch might be quicker/easier.
My intention was to do fire dragons so they resemble as closely as possible the classic 2nd ed codex cover, or do something more funky with black and red shading, but like I say, I'm a slow painter at the best of times, maybe dire avengers or just the exarch would be better at this point. If I just do the exarch, I'll again try to get it as close to the 2nd ed codex art as possible.
What do people think? Proof pics for all options added.
If anyone has any tips on how to photograph metallics well, I'd really appreciate hearing them. Can not get an image that does them justice at all. I'll keep trying though.
@cancelledapocalypse cheers, sorcerer on the left the horns are twisted, so the detail is there. On Aekold Helbrass, they are perfectly smooth, so the details are painted on.
Very nice JamesY Great job with the line work on Aekold's horns.
Only tip I have I using a lightbox or something to diffuse the light so you can get a clear light whilst cutting down the reflection - but that doesn't seem to be your issue.
I've been very distracted from my entry lately. damn my weak attention span. I've been slowly chipping away, and I should finish at least 2 of my chaos dwarves. the third is a possibility. they are only small after all.
Well with this thread and the 'show off your OOP models' thread i've been distracted by rummaging through baggies of 90's metal minis rather than any actual painting this week. But i am now the proud owner of a disassembled whirlwind (metal turret obviously). But at least there are still two weekends and a bank holiday left to get my entry finished.
@Freya Superb! And love that gold rimmed base, that's proper fancy, that is!
@maxwin Also pretty fantastic, that freehand banner looks ace!
@Arakasi Same with that scapula, very nicely done.
I've decided I'm just going to paint the dire avenger exarch to give myself a chance of finishing at least one model to a moderately high standard. I've whacked some base colours on and I think it should look pretty good. Going to try to freehand some of the gold designs on the armour, though I'm not sure if I should shade the white and paint over, or paint the design and then shade the whole lot... Same with the designs on the helmet.
Looking forward to that exarch, CancelledApocalypse - I love the cover art from that edition.
So, I eventually decided on doing some old warhammer models - a knight and some dark elves - they will never...ever...be aelves to me...and 'Astra Militarum'!? What the hell is that?...sorry, got sidetracked....
These guys are all from the late 80s and early 90s - not the oldest models I own but the ones that really made me fall in love with this hobby. In the late 80s, D and D dark elves were all purple - skin, robes, the lot, so mine were all painted a light blue skin colour. So...that's what these guys will be painted, too. I have some dwarves from 1981 as well that might find their way into the diorama if there is space.
I've started on the knight and you forget how good models are these days! The surfaces of this guy are so rough - there are literal fingerprints in the sculpt - FINGERPRINTS!
Still, the nostalgia is just too good...for the first time in months, I am actually enjoying painting. Here's my proof:

But i am now the proud owner of a disassembled whirlwind (metal turret obviously). But at least there are still two weekends and a bank holiday left to get my entry finished.
Ugh. I had a whirlwind as a kid. what a nightmare model. trying to get the rocket platform to stick to the turret.
You didn't forget about your old pal McBogus, did ya?
Finally finished drilling and gluing and pinning today. The Patriarch is ready for priming. Hopefully, these next steps go quickly, time's running out!
Had a quick flick through this thread, and there are some BEAUTIFUL entries. Great work, guys. Loving them all!
Finished the Witch aka Necromancer for my Undead Warband.
Must say that I got a bit annoyed with it once started but wanted to get it done so I can field a band for WarCry once this pandemic mess is over.
My finished entry is a metal Jain Zar, not a great sculpt by any means, but one that lasted over twenty years before a recent replacement.
Based to be fielded with my army.
Cheers,
CB
PS: Suggestions on background color as I do not have a macro lens or function on the iPhone 7...the blue seems to make the paint look like contrast rather than the blending it should show.
Lots of great stuff coming from you all this month.
Looking forward to seeing what you do with those monsters Dukeofbeer. Particularly the troll, I love the old troll models and still prefer them to anything GW have done since.
Nice Jain Zar CB. Odd how she looks so different in white given its not that far from the usual bone
Looking good so far Arakasi, freehand is really nice and good job on the white
Long way to go for me but at least I've now made a start on my zoat
There are some amazing pieces out there! Great work everyone.
It's the 24th already, so I had better get going!
My bagpiper is primered. I'm going to throw down some base layers tonight, and hopefully have the time to put in some detail before the month is out.
Thanks very much! Appreciate the kind words. When the dark ones descend from the heavens, you shall surely be among the most esteemed shareholders!
I never want to work with lead again! I still have flashbacks to drilling out the holes for pinning...
Working from home today, so definately not binge-watching Stranger Things and painting minis. GF has started calling this the Demagorgon, which I don't hate. Bizarrely Stranger Things has like, normalized me making lots of little space men, so who knows.
Finished up the flesh today, and took the masking off the base. Full speed to brains, chitin and weathering that metal!
Some really awesome entries guys, these threads are always great fun to watch!

What? A vote? I thought you were going to use this crisis to seize power, dissolve the senate, and use fear to keep the local systems posters in line. We haven’t had a vote yet this round.
As the last few have been skewed towards the old, how about “fresh blood” “new reinforcements” or “latest and greatest”
If people are curious, I updated my index post with the names of all the past contests.
I like the "fresh blood" idea - could count as newest models, or new recruits into a gang, rpg characters in the early levels etc. Even a sacrificial victim.
I like fresh blood for sure... lots of new kits out, GW sales are flowing again, and we could drive business to FLGSs as they reopen. It could even include new paints (Contrast, airbrush), new technical skills (weathering pigments, OSL, etc.), escalation units, get started boxes...
Captain Brown wrote: Not a fan of the Fresh Blood theme as I only have old models...and none require a coating of blood. But it that is the choice I will roll with it.
CB
could also be fresh blood as an 'in world' concept..like a space marine scout or something along those lines.

Let’s call that done. More old school from the back of the bench. all have probably done time in the Blood Angels. I know both the metals for sure, and the plastics are a mix of two old forces, stripped broken down and rebuilt. So probably a little BA in there. First real try at a tattoo. Think it turned out pretty good. Old and worn, just the the marine who wears it.
At this point over half of my painting output for the year is Rogue Trader era minis. Only 6 left in the primed pile. I should get back to stripping and rebuilding the rest of them.
Javelin - nice work on those boys, and great tattoo.
Jamie - I like it, quite understated for Harlies. Interesting choice on keeping the half-mask all the same colour, most people would probably automatically half the colours. Fits the scheme nicely.
Thanks. Tried to push the boat out a little more with the freehand. I followed a video by squidmar where he had a guy on doing some freehand techniques.
As always, some really great stuff...I love seeing all of the oldhammer models - they have so much character!
This is the first entry I've enjoyed painting in quite a while - it was like a trip down memory lane....and my lane is a pretty long one these days...
I have tried to capture the feel of the 80s and 90s that first attracted me to the hobby. The bold, flat colours reds, blues, purples and greens; the trainset flock and home-made trees of the dioramas that inspired my imagination so much.
I think the oldest model in this diorama is the Aenur model (which is actually from Mordheim 1991, I think) - the assassin at the back but the others are all approximately the same vintage in 1992...except for the horse, which is about four years newer than its rider being released in 1995. I ran out of time to get my 1981 dwarf into the scene!
The surfaces of the miniatures is the biggest difference I noticed with this project - the surfaces are very rough compared to the silky smooth plastic of today. The straight edges are often pitted and the knight has genuine fingerprints in the cast! These things make them hard to paint but add so much character...great times...
Anyhow, sorry for rambling...here it is:
Thanks to Para for running this challenge - your effort is very appreciated.
I've googled it and you're right, QAR, Aenur is a lot newer than I thought, making it the newest model of the lot, not the oldest! Mind you, he's still old enough to drive!

Yeah, I remember him coming free with white dwarf back in 2000 or so? I literally just bought him last week from ebay myself! Great piece anyway! looks like a scene from a vintage white dwarf.
I might try to re photo My chaos dwarf with shield. not happy with the photo.
Just the gems left for me. Would really appreciate any suggestions for the colour of the one split mask. I have it prepped silver for gemstone paint of which I have all three, but also open to leaving it silver or doing it gold. What do you think?
Edit: added slightly earlier pic with a clearer shot of the split mask.
Thanks for the responses. The belt gems will be green with a mix of blue green and red elsewhere. For this model it will be green on the belt and probably alternating green and blue on the pistol.
Here's my five-man Adeptus Arbites unit. I bought these guys at Ralph's Comic Corner in Ventura, California, sometime in the late 90s, and they've been in my collection, unpainted, until now. I struggled with getting the blue armor tint figured out, but the good netizens of Dakka helped me through it. This was my first attempt at gems, and I'm quite pleased. The custom bases were a last minute addition, but they ended up being pretty easy and very rewarding. I'm excited to get these tip-of-the-spear enforcers of Imperial doctrine into a list somehow-- the Adeptus Arbites, Adeptus Ministorum, and Ordo Xenos together as the Emperor intended. There are more photos in spoilers and on my P&M blog.
Here is my entry for the challenge. I hope I'm not too late in entering.
My Tzeentch chaos warrior.
Spoiler:
I wanted to give this guy a bit of an off feel to him, so the armour has been painted in reverse (light shadows and dark highlights) and i've matted down the metallics as much as I could so that they weren't shiny. The leather is the only thing that's "normal".
Some lovely stuff coming in! Love the muted palette on monkeytroll's sorcerer, those Arbites are just badass minis and the Chaos Warrior is delightfully retro.
I don't have nearly enough knowledge of these 80s/90s minis to do it myself (half of them are a decade older than me ), but I'd love it if someone could figure out the very oldest mini on show in the vote thread.

is a great resource if people want to try to find the oldest catalog their minis show up in. My guys go back to ’88, but I suspect some of the fantasy stuff in this contest might go back a little farther.
Brilliant stuff guys!
I especially love Chris56's entry. A very fitting set of models and terrain!
Phew, got mine done just in time.
As I've said before, I'm a bit sad that the entry is not a classic model. But it represents classic tech in the world of 40k, in the form of the paintjob, the design and the good old carbureted v8.
Shokkjump Buggy (Shokkjump Dragsta is the original model)
So much good stuff being posted. I'm not going to be able to finish mine, unfortunately, deadlines have ganged up on me this month. I might post a status pic later today, though.
Wow great stuff this month! So much old school.
Chris56- that is great! I particularly love the knight.
I didn't get the whole old school monster squad done, just the troll. And my photography day had garbage light! Oh well.
Yeah, there's normally a bit of give as Para has to collate the images anyway.
And presenting Nurgle Sorceror Kal The Poxweaver
Still not sure what I should have done for the lenses I went with metallics, but not convinced it was the right choice.
Tried a cheetah pattern on the fur waistcoat (after e-painting the bit I missed that made it a waistcoat) but that was aborted early on, just wasn't working at all. Without any pattern there I feel I should have added something to the robes - maybe checks along the bottom edge. Happy with it though, and another one that is actually finished.
My olde Harlies. Tried to make them a bit more steampunk space elf pirates rather than magic space elf clowns, also I'm too lazy/fidgety to try the original colour schemes.
Great entries everyone, loving your take on the harlies Mobilesuitrandom.
Here's my finished entry, as always feedback is very much welcome and appreciated.
Sadly, this is going to be yet another year without finishing something each month, as I've fallen impossibly behind. Had kind of a "crisis of faith" in the middle of the month during which I seriously considered quitting Warhammer altogether (spoiler alert: I'm not quitting), and during that time I didn't paint anything at all. Hoping to get back on the horse for next month, and I do look forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with, as always!
After going back and forth on a few different entries, I'm throwing in this one at the last minute. It's a very new mini comparatively ( I don't really have anything properly oldschool, aside from some LotR bits which I guess are getting on for 20 these days) but as an ancient Demon Lord with a long history in D&D drawn from even older real-world roots incorporated into his mythology, I guess he fits enough?
Full disclosure, I'm mainly just entering him because I'm incredibly pleased with the paintjob, so maybe I'm clutching at straws to get him to fit the theme, but hopefully you agree it's at least tangentially suitable.
Just got mine done in time. I think this model dates to 1987 (at least the earliest catalogue entry I found) though would have bought him later than that.
I can see the nostalgia theme is very popular but myself I'm not feeling it. Had to dig deep to find these old slayer. I reckon they are over 20 years old.
I struggled to paint them, got spoiled with all the amazing minis of modern era.
Well, here they are...giant slayers with a bit of war paint and tattoos.
Sorry I've not been around much this month (and I haven't done the league table yet, I can't face more spreadsheets with working from home). I've been finding it very hard juggling work and childcare during the lockdown so my days are very long and I'm knacker at the end of the day. Hopefully that will change soon.
I gave myself a sub challenge to this challenge and that was to paint 1 of my many many old miniatures in a day (today in fact) in the style of when it was first released with the original paints.
I hope you enjoy the Goblin Green base
I will take some better pics if I can tomorrow.
P.S. Holy cow Modock they look awesome. Possibly the best I have ever seen on those models.
Wow, there's some amazing stuff in here this month. This is going to be a fun one to vote for. I'm going to be giving out a lot of votes this time!
For my entry, I painted some original Harlequins. My proof had five models, but I only painted three. I was aiming to recreate the paint jobs that I saw when I was first getting into the hobby in the late 80s, and which were hands down my favorite thing about the whole hobby. I still think they might be my favorite paintjobs I've seen. There are others that are objectively better, but none that give me such a proustian rush. I used to marvel at these and think I'd never be able to do that. I was right, but I got as close as I could!
These are the specific models I was recreating -
And these are my attempts -
I might do a whole army of the modern Harlequin models in these old paint schemes. It would take years to complete, obviously, but it'd be fun.
By the way, this is the first time I'm posting from my new PC, which runs at a different desktop resolution from my old PC, and I'm still getting used to it. I'm not sure how these photos will look - if they look too big, let me know and I'll see if I can do anything about it.
Some thoughts on the use of contrast:
1, contrast needs thinning for some colours, which sort of defeats the point, but it still beats painting regular yellow
2, for simple or modern plastic models, contrast is great. For highly detailed metal models such as a SoB cannonness, just paint it normally.
3, remember which kind of purple you originally used so you don't spend two hours layering up very thin coats of a light purple to try and make it dark when you can just use two thin coats of dark purple.
I managed to finish my Terminators with 43 seconds to midnight, but as I've been tackling 60 marines total this month my hand is cramping too much to take photos tonight so pics in the morning from me!
First time trying out skin colored contrast paint. Normally not that much into dwarves, but I enjoyed painting him more and more the longer I worked on him. One thing I learned: dry brushing is pretty difficult on such small models.....
And curse you Modock, your dwarves make mine look like it's painted in kindergarten!
Hah, the list in the OP hasn't been updated since page 2 actually, and it's already a long one. So yeah, might take me a few days to get the poll up. Please bear with!
Some awesome entries, gutted that work and real life got in the way of finishing my entry. Maybe June will be more favourable If I have anything to fit the theme. Now who to vote for...
Just an update on the vote, I've not been too well over the last week or so, so it's still in progress, just a tad delayed. Stay tuned, it should be along shortly.

Poll should be up tomorrow evening, I've compiled all the entries in the OP so I just need to set up the actual vote thread. If I've missed anyone/got the wrong pics, give me a shout, I haven't double checked it yet.
