Thanks. Tried to push the boat out a little more with the freehand. I followed a video by squidmar where he had a guy on doing some freehand techniques.

As always, some really great stuff...I love seeing all of the oldhammer models - they have so much character!
This is the first entry I've enjoyed painting in quite a while - it was like a trip down memory lane....and my lane is a pretty long one these days...
I have tried to capture the feel of the 80s and 90s that first attracted me to the hobby. The bold, flat colours reds, blues, purples and greens; the trainset flock and home-made trees of the dioramas that inspired my imagination so much.
I think the oldest model in this diorama is the Aenur model (which is actually from Mordheim 1991, I think) - the assassin at the back but the others are all approximately the same vintage in 1992...except for the horse, which is about four years newer than its rider being released in 1995. I ran out of time to get my 1981 dwarf into the scene!
The surfaces of the miniatures is the biggest difference I noticed with this project - the surfaces are very rough compared to the silky smooth plastic of today. The straight edges are often pitted and the knight has genuine fingerprints in the cast! These things make them hard to paint but add so much character...great times...
Anyhow, sorry for rambling...here it is:
Thanks to Para for running this challenge - your effort is very appreciated.

I've googled it and you're right, QAR, Aenur is a lot newer than I thought, making it the newest model of the lot, not the oldest! Mind you, he's still old enough to drive!

Yeah, I remember him coming free with white dwarf back in 2000 or so? I literally just bought him last week from ebay myself! Great piece anyway! looks like a scene from a vintage white dwarf.
I might try to re photo My chaos dwarf with shield. not happy with the photo.

Just the gems left for me. Would really appreciate any suggestions for the colour of the one split mask. I have it prepped silver for gemstone paint of which I have all three, but also open to leaving it silver or doing it gold. What do you think?
Edit: added slightly earlier pic with a clearer shot of the split mask.

Thanks for the responses. The belt gems will be green with a mix of blue green and red elsewhere. For this model it will be green on the belt and probably alternating green and blue on the pistol.

Here's my five-man Adeptus Arbites unit. I bought these guys at Ralph's Comic Corner in Ventura, California, sometime in the late 90s, and they've been in my collection, unpainted, until now. I struggled with getting the blue armor tint figured out, but the good netizens of Dakka helped me through it. This was my first attempt at gems, and I'm quite pleased. The custom bases were a last minute addition, but they ended up being pretty easy and very rewarding. I'm excited to get these tip-of-the-spear enforcers of Imperial doctrine into a list somehow-- the Adeptus Arbites, Adeptus Ministorum, and Ordo Xenos together as the Emperor intended. There are more photos in spoilers and on my P&M blog.
Here is my entry for the challenge. I hope I'm not too late in entering.
My Tzeentch chaos warrior.
Spoiler:
I wanted to give this guy a bit of an off feel to him, so the armour has been painted in reverse (light shadows and dark highlights) and i've matted down the metallics as much as I could so that they weren't shiny. The leather is the only thing that's "normal".
Some lovely stuff coming in! Love the muted palette on monkeytroll's sorcerer, those Arbites are just badass minis and the Chaos Warrior is delightfully retro.
I don't have nearly enough knowledge of these 80s/90s minis to do it myself (half of them are a decade older than me ), but I'd love it if someone could figure out the very oldest mini on show in the vote thread.

is a great resource if people want to try to find the oldest catalog their minis show up in. My guys go back to ’88, but I suspect some of the fantasy stuff in this contest might go back a little farther.
Brilliant stuff guys!
I especially love Chris56's entry. A very fitting set of models and terrain!
Phew, got mine done just in time.
As I've said before, I'm a bit sad that the entry is not a classic model. But it represents classic tech in the world of 40k, in the form of the paintjob, the design and the good old carbureted v8.
Shokkjump Buggy (Shokkjump Dragsta is the original model)

So much good stuff being posted. I'm not going to be able to finish mine, unfortunately, deadlines have ganged up on me this month. I might post a status pic later today, though.

Then comes along the frakking Spinosaurus who kills the T-rex, and the movie says "LOVE THIS NOW! HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Wow great stuff this month! So much old school.
Chris56- that is great! I particularly love the knight.
I didn't get the whole old school monster squad done, just the troll. And my photography day had garbage light! Oh well.
