Finished the last of my Iron Man themed Enforcer jetbikes! All 12 bikes, 10 breachers and 10 assault defenders are done, half of the 30 assault marines and half the 20 peacekeepers are now finished. 50 out of 60 standard Enforcers, 40 pathfinders, 12 strikers and the 4 dropship/bombers still to go! And of course the remaining 10 peacekeepers and 15 assault marines. And characters. Probably almost 1/3 of the way done.

Amazingly after 4/5 years... I'm actually assembling my miniatures from "The Hobbit." And I was working on repairs for my even older Lord of the Rings miniatures (some which would have been bought in 2001 and 2002(!).
Why? Because I'm working on getting an army together for Kings of War.
I took this pic yesterday, a 2000 point 'Kingdoms of Men' army, made entirely using Lord of the Rings miniatures. Where I've got Moria Goblins to act as 'militia' in the list. However... Escape from Goblin Town has 36 goblins inside it, who lookswise fit in more likely to have been slaves in Isenguard, rather than the somewhat heavily armoured Moria goblins. And, there's more of them... So, I've been putting them together as replacements.
Then I worked on the rest of the minis as, well, to get rid of the sprues, really.
Off topic but... I'm still, years later, completely amazed at how half-a*sed the dead-tree materials were for "Escape from Goblin Town."

Post by: Vermis
Cor, lookit that.
When you say 'dead tree material', do you mean the books or the model platforms?

Point. Though I wonder how well the PVC would stick, and with Miniature Heroes down 'til mid March, I'm almost in the same situation.

The books, I had genuinely forgotten how awful they were.
5 scenarios, each one only having 3 characters or so for the good side. No points costs, despite the rulebook spending a long time talking about 'points match' games. It's just horrendous.
I remember back in the 'Fellowship of the Ring' days, each accompanying boxed set they released (EG Assault on Weathertop), had scenarios tied to it that were essentially mini games all on their own.

There's a good set of summary sheets and a quickref page on the boardgamegeek page for Deadzone 2. I've been using that one.
https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/135670/universal-head-deadzone-second-edition-rules-summa
Someone did quite a nice set of stat cards for the various factions.
https://www.mantic.club/forum/deadzone/general-discussion-ae/265424-deadzone-redux-personal-stat-cards
There's an army builder here as well. Includes the errata'd units (get the FAQ - it's a Mantic game so there are a lot of annoying errors in the rulebook, mostly missed special rules on the unit entries).

Approaching playable small force. Just want that 2k soon so I could play. I hate playing with unpainted force but want to play soon so I have good motivator to keep up chucking!

I've been painting 1:300 scale WWII aircraft, RAF and Luftwaffe. I'm a few planes short of finished but when I'm done I'm thinking of taking a bunch of pictures and making an album to show them off.
Its been a really rewarding project so far and of course I'm considering adding a couple more planes to each airforce and probably starting a small USAF collection too. Beause a P-38 lightning is just a beautiful machine.

Going down another prototype tank rabbit hole...
Whilst working on my Alternative History Germans, I was looking into American use of Amphibious LVTs (I'm making a German one based on the Panther chassis at the moment). That led me onto the Pacific theatre. Japan oddly enough had designed a whole wave of armoured vehicles for the defence of the home islands which surpassed what had came before.
I'm currently eyeing up a Type 5 Chi-Ri Medium Tank. In short it was the Japanese Panther (in terms of other stuff like say the Hungarian TAS 44M), aimed at out performing the American's Sherman. Problem is ...its based on another Prototype Tank from earlier in the war, the Type 4 Chi-To. Luckily, that was made from a lengthened Type 97 Kai Shinito (thus the rabbit hole).
So... I guess I'll pick up a Type 97 Kai Shinito and steal the track units from it. Then make some new road wheels and tracks to lengthen those, and create the rest of the tank from plasticard. Oh, and the gun too considering that was also a prototype 105mm which never saw any major production (seeing a theme here?).
Meanwhile I have a load of other stuff unfinished, and a German force with more armoured vehicles than complete squads (I've literally just been playing Tank games with them). But... well... this thing looks cool, so meh.

Mourning the destruction of my WIP Black Legion Daemon Prince.
Sadly crushed by a small child (the child happily is still fully assembled with all pieces accounted for, unlike mr DP, who is missing a horn, some fingers and other assorted pieces).
It has taken me some days to take this model and look at it again, as I've been slowly painting him for months due to limited hobby time. Having him destroyed before he was even completed, let alone seen on the field of battle was upsetting to say the least.
I'm trying to take a silver lining approach, and use the damage as an excuse to go back and redo elements of the model I didn't like, or incorporate new ideas.
I'm thinking of remodelling the claw to have more blade like fingers, akin to the Talon of Horus, possibly with a combi bolter mounting. Where the horns were may be turned into ears, or filed down, as I am considering adding a lavish top knot to reinforce the black legion look. Horns are so passé.
And yes, he has arms for legs. This was a stretch DP, the second I manage to squeeze out of the official kit!

My Juggernaut, Psylocke and Archangel models from Heroclix came in; I've found heroclix sculpts (of newer models) to be decent, it's the paint jobs that usually suck ass (Archangel is good though; just no shading, but colors are great. Very happy with him, as is). So I'm repainting them. Psylocke and Juggie have rules for KM Marvel that are considered "finished", and Archy is easily subbed with Falcon rules. So doing them all up. Need a second Archangel for X-Force costume. Got my second Psylocke already.

Juggernaut needs a wash, and I did an eBay purchase order for 8 other Heroclix models to use in the KM Marvel/DC game. 'Clix models are decently sculpted, but lord the paintjobs are terrible!! The ones that aren't bad have no shade, no detail, just flat color. Time to fix that all up and have a Marvel X crew to be proud of.
These are both Heroclix models, btw.

Did the long drive to the nearest GW store to pick up some an order, didn't plan on buying anything else but the store had some of the gryph cavalry unboxed and undercoated. The mount models looked fantastic and before you could say "limited impulse control" I'd ordered up a couple of boxes plus the hero.
No intention at all of starting a Stormcast force, but these boxes mean my AM killteam just gained some fierce looking roughriders.

Making a Japanese WWII Ho-Ru Tank Destroyer out of a Walord Ha-Go. Having only really made German tanks to this point, the size of the Japanese stuff is insane. They were prototyping this thing in 1945, but the thing is smaller than a Panzer I ...expecting it to go take out Shermans with a 47mm gun (for comparison the Germans by 45 had set a 75mm as their minimum size, with 88s being shoved on most of their prototypes, and 105s on the cutting edge stuff ...let alone mentioning the Soviet stuff, which admittedly couldn't kit the side of a barn).
An interesting wee Tank, for a war that never came, after Operation Downfall/ Olympic was cancelled (luckily ...damn luckily). I'll be painting it up for the defence of the Home Islands, so that'll take me away from all the snow I cake my German stuff with.

Played a game as IG against Tau, both semi competitive lists, and came out on top. It was my first game against Riptides, and there were two of them. Some big, big reasons for my success included getting the first turn and having fiery hot dice that turn. Wrecking a devilish with lascannon HWS, finishing off the passengers with a Wyvern, removing lots of Fire Warriors with a Hellhound and Eradicator. I had Pasknisher, and he was not killed on the first turn by Riptide + 3 marker lights, just down to 1 hull point. Bullgryns charged a Riptide, tying it up for 4 rounds of combat until they inflicted 2 unsaved wounds and made the Riptide fail morale, nearly killing it with sweeping advance in the 5th. I also made a couple clutch 6+ camo netting saves between my Wyvern and Pask, preventing both from being wrecked. On the last turn a Riptide could have gotten slay the warlord and linebreaker for a tie by charging Pask and consolidating into my deployment zone, but he failed a 5" charge. So though I never quite killed either riptide, getting both down to 2 wounds, it was a really interesting game.
I also scattered grenades onto my own units at least 3 times, even glancing a Taurox accidentally

Just played in an ITC format tournament. Lost 2 games, and managed to barely squeak by in the third for a win, and that was only because we ran out of time (I would have lost for sure if there had been another turn). I think I'm going to give up on my Chaos stuff for the time being; not permanently though as I do intend to slowly build up some Daemons stuff and maybe make my Chaos collection great again. I just don't really have the tools to take on tougher opponents right now.
My takeaway:
Chaos Knights are awesome, especially the Khorne one. Too bad for all the ranged D shots Eldar can throw around (a Lynx killed my Knight in the first turn of the first game).
Be'lakor is just not worth his points. Guaranteed Invisibility is nice, but not for 350 points with only T5. He's too squishy to accomplish much on the ground despite his statline and weapon, and too expensive to hide in the air, especially against anyone with Skyfire or a ton of shooting (like Eldar).
Khorne Daemonkin, on the whole, are just not that good right now. They suffer from being an assault army in a game that is biased toward shooting. Maybe 8th edition will help them, maybe not.
The Cyclopia Cabal can be good, but it really depends heavily on rolling the right powers. They are kind of expensive for what they do, and they might not do a whole lot if they don't get good powers.

Beat Chaos Chosen to be placed as 4th seed in overtime (highlight: his Minotaur got KO'ed turn 2 and never woke up), upset the 1st seed Lizardmen team in overtime (highlight: Kroxigor failed Bone Head 5 times, and failed break tackle once as well), then more handily defeated 2nd seed Chaos Dwarves 2-0 in the final (highlights: 1st block of the game his Minotaur pushed my Morg n Thorg and lost support from guard, rolled skulls, and got casualty'ed, his S5 bull centaur also failed 2+ break tackle 4 or 5 times.)

My list had a CAD with a Juggerlord, a D-thirster, a Heldrake, my Khorne Knight, and a Soul Grinder along with a unit of Bloodletters and a unit of Cultists as troops. I also had a Gorepack with two units of melta bikes and 3 units of Khornedogs (2 5 model and 1 10 model). His list had a tooled-up Warboss in Mega Armor, a unit of Meganobz in a Trukk, 4 units of Shoota Boyz each in a Trukk, 2 10-man squads of Lootas, and a Killkrusha Tank (I think that's what his big tank was). I won the game handily as might be expected from this matchup, with my friend conceding after just 3 turns. The game really just went to show how desperately Orks need a better codex, and my friend realized this. I also got very lucky with some of my saves, as my Chaos Lord survived longer than he statistically should have.

Nice work. I just finished assembling my samurai. Fiddly little sods, every one of them. I am fully expecting something to snap off first time I use them. I was particularly unimpressed at the neck hole in the torsos to locate the head peg and then realising that only one of the supplied heads actually has a neck peg so the rest have to be glued to the rim of a hole instead of a decent contact patch. Wargames Factory's sprue designers really didn't concentrate on what they were doing.
Glad to hear the ashigaru are a bit easier to build.
I'm doing all of mine in monochrome so the whole game looks more like a Kurosawa film. And because I am a very lazy painter.

Monochrome sounds like it could work very well actually, not good enough at working the shades out for that but would love to see them.

Agree the sprue designers were asleep on the job in some areas, for the love of gork, please when putting paired arms/legs etc on frames mark them so you know what goes with what...

I dug out a pile of half-painted Orks of various sorts, including good representations of their special operatives along with an Ogryn with maul and shield to act as Imperial Guard special operative. Let's see how many I can do of these.

Have one in bits on the windowsill, plus a Mk1 Predator which sadly needs the turret sawing off as its about the only glued joint on it thats firm... (flipping typical really) old eBay finds that need a bit of TLC, and oh yes they bring back memories, pity the Mk1 land raiders go for so much these days.
To true leopard. Getting the Sisters of Battle parts to fit on the chassis is proving to require an awful lot of sanding and now building replacement parts for those I do not have...like the front door with tracks.
Still working on them, but two mostly look like Immolators now.

Finished my second chaos rhino, slightly less bling on this one to make painting easier so went from the base gold applied last night through the two highlight golds and clear red today after about an hour masking, few details and done - and looks a lot nicer than the clear red applied by brush one that took a week to get four coats on the thing.
Have to get hold of a 30k one and have a go with the silver base and full on thousand sons colours.
Finished the day assembling and basing the masked men box for Test of Honour which I hope to prime tomorrow, think the yellow/brown/red/white colours Warlord use are ok but likely to swap the yellow for green (better to lurk in the shadows with)
Test of Honour event on the 15th so wondering about letting them have a run at that

Nice giant.
Felt the same with a shadowsword, was fun to build, at first, then a chore, painting it got very tedious. Wifyboo bought me a knight, took me a year to build and paint it, just find a normal 28mm model about manageable, larger gets tedious.
Ironically did a giant and enjoyed it, something about that model I liked doing

Shadowsword was brush painted (camo applied by a sponge), didn't help the desert yellow needed three coats, took an age - have since bought an airbrush which would have allowed the thing to be painted in a few days, mostly waiting for paint to cure the actual time being a few hours of effort.
Issue with the big GW kits is the 'detail density' is the same as the smaller models on some of them, all just ends up looking a bit busy, suits some more than others.
Wouldn't do a large model with a brush again, the knight got sprayed - was doing the old 'storm lord' camo on it, got about a third of the way through and now its metallic red/gold/silver and "good enough"

Going through the motions of making yari-style spears from aluminum florist wire. I've been trying to figure out how exactly to do this, since flattening with pliers seems impossible. The current method is hammering the wire on a steel plate. Not exactly great, although I'm going to give the Dremel a try to shape the spearheads.

Debating between an olive green, something brighter or not even green. Going for the 3 ectoplasma cannon loadout as it reminds me of the giant warrior from Nausicaa. Mouth cannons FTW!

They too look pretty nice I have to say, not cheap for what they are but they are nice looking.
Tamiya do a set of fuel drums etc thats worth a look, more or less identical in size, and look good alongside the GW ones.
Have been wondering on the containers myself, more for the normal game but as you say, nice chunky scatter terrain

Wandered round local GW, a lot of muttering about the new version of 40k and what its 'bound to be' between staff and a few regulars, even got a nod that things are due to change soon - no details obviously.
Odd really, was considering getting the legions book, the mutterings on a new system that doesn't use the current codexes was a bit off putting and somewhat counter productive, final choice not to buy it was due to most of it seeming to be a traitors hate rules reprint..
Otherwise was just browsing, considered some Mk III marines but figured I have the prospero box unbuilt so didn't.. Need to order a few more steel bases...
I have actually started painting my 'masked men' for test of honour though White/green/red-brown

Whoever thought tracks which're made up of individual teeth was a good idea can go die in a well... Putting together an old Tamiya kit (presumably from the 80s), and just thinking how lovely Rubicon's one piece track assemblies (which have more detail than their competitor's multipart ones) are...
I never realised how good things are in my home town for wargaming. In Glasgow there's a handful of shops in close proximity to each other which sell similar stuff. I thought we were kind of crap actually, especially given how many have closed. Queue me going to Edinburgh, where their famed wargaming shop barely has any stock on the shelves (other than Warhammer), and that's the only gig in town (unless you're into board games, they love them there). Their historical model kits shop was fairly great though (it doesn't hold a candle to the one Glasgow used to have, but sadly shut down a few years back), so I wound up spending most of the cash I brought along for the trip there; thus the Tamiya kit.
I'm turning the Tamiya 1/48th scale Elephant kit, which a helping hand from a load of platicard and milliput, into a 1/56th scale Lowe super heavy (with some liberties obviously). Scale creep is a real thing.

Post by: BrookM
Their 1:48 range is only a few years old at best. Is the lower hull metal or plastic by the way? If it's metal it's an older kit, if it's plastic it is way more recent.

Oh god the documentation says 2016.
I did wonder why the base was plastic (with steel rod inserts). Those metal hulls were nice, but really annoying if you need to mess with them a bit whilst converting.

They did the metal lower hulls / frames for their 1:48 military vehicles in the early days to give the models a "more satisfying weight and feel to them". Sadly they stopped doing this in favour of chunky weights that have to be glued into the hull itself, looking at you, IS-2 tank.

"Satisfying" in that when bunched together with a few other tanks your carry case becomes rather heavy...
Let alone with all the milliput I'm sticking on those kits. Warlord and Blitzkrieg's all resin kits are still beating Tamiya's metal hulls out in weight though.
