Great models, nice to see some marines that really stand out!
Some of the poses are just epic, consider the grenade-lobbing dude (that's what his doing, right?) copied
You can't see it from that angle but there is a grenade on his chest he is grabbing. You can only see the top of it if you look straight down at the model.
I'll try to take a shot of it with the next update.
That would never dissuade me, this is one of my favorite subscribed threads, that and your fantastic (if not updated more regularly than I would like) story thread
My progress so far today has included some finishing touches on the left guy and lots of work on the right guy. Here is another angle on the second guy.
And because I know Solar will ask, yes I worked on Huron. PRAISE HURON!
Thanks guys. Welcome to my thread Paint_To_Redemption!
At the end of the day I managed to get a little more done with my claws.
The two on the right are completed, unless you guys see something I missed. The guy on the left received another level of orange and his first wash. I also managed to give some missile launcher marines their simple green bath. I'm hoping to have them cleaned up and primed tomorrow. I should be able to complete that last tactical marine tomorrow. I think it will be time for some squad pictures once that's done.
Praise Huron!
I almost forgot, Huron received some more paint today as well. For those of you who haven't really looked at the forgeworld model, its a great sculpt. The only down side is that there is so much crap on him I'm not sure there will be room for any stripes. Time to get creative!
While taking some pics of my completed tactical units I decided to grab a couple pictures of some of my previous Tiger Claw guys. Prepare for a photo dump!
First off, the marines I have completed for this years Adepticon.
Quick side note, the simple green bath is underway. They are now in part two, then they'll be primed!
The remaining pictures of just other Tiger Claws I've done. I hope you don't mind some extra pics!
Here is everybody all together. The only thing not in the pictures are my razorback, rhino, and land raider, mainly because I don't like they way they turned out. That's something else to work on.
I apologize about the lighting but I think you guys get the idea. What do you think?
Thanks guys! I really appreciate it. I didn't manage to get any painting done this evening but I did work on my missile guys. I'm not sure what exactly happened but of the two marines one of them the paint came off easily, like it should. The other, however, did not. All of the colors came off except the black under coat. I thought that was a bit weird. I've never simple greened a model, brushed them, and still had the majority of the paint on them. I'm not sure if the undercoat was a different paint or a bad batch or what. Tomorrow I'll be taking a second look at them to see how I should move forward.
The model that everything came off of will get a nice new black priming, the other I'm still unsure. Has any one had this happen before?
I find it amusing that the medic is the one that's been injured Also, I find it unfair that you can get such a solid coverage with that orange, I'm assuming it's just loads of thin layers?
in most cases black primer tends to stain the model, making it look like its not coming off,. Its either that, or he was primed with a crazy durable primer that for some reason the green wont touch. Not much withstands SimpleGreen baths...
So Id say, try it. Its probably just stained and you should be good. Just be sure everything you give a bath to gets a good rinse!
Sometime models that have commercial spray paint used on them have a chemical bond with the plastic.. This is almost impossible to remove without sanding and scraping. Not worth the effort IMO.
Good news, the models did reprime just fine. As I was thinking back, there was a time a few years ago I purchased some paints for various different vendors to try out. I want to say that I purchased, a small container of reaper black paint? I didn't like the way it applied but I tried it multiple times on different models with different techniques, and something tells me that one of the missile launchers was just one of those test subjects. Either way, its covered now. Now all I need is some time to get moving on them.
The two missile launchers, Huron, and the terminator unit. It looks like Huron may get to battle this weekend too. Maybe I'll take some pictures to share with all of you.
Okay, here are a few pictures from my game the other day.
First up, 1000 points of Tiger Claws.
My opponent, 1000 points of Executioners.
Here is the deployment, it was Purge the Heretic on Dawn of War.
I didn't take a lot of pictures to show off the violent action, but in a nut shell, he pushed forward and so did I. We met in a whirling cloud of death. I adjusted my guys to get the charge with my terminators but rolled HORRIBLE! 9 powerfist attacks and only one marine died. PATHETIC! He then fled and turned around and charged me back. Huron also missed terribly with both of his Big Guns Never Tire shots. The only highlight was my lascannon taking out Thulsa Kane. Overall he won 4 to 6. At the end the only remaining marines were the lone tactical unit at the bottom of the deployment screen. He still had a handful of assault marines, an entire tactical unit, and a lone devastator hiding so I couldn't get the kill point.
In hindsight, I should have sent my terminators to deep strike into his territory. It would have kept him on the defensive so i could have had more time shooting at him with my superior firing position.
Here is a great shot of the multiple combats in the center of the board.
Thanks guys. I have been very happy with my ice terrain Solar. I'm glad you like it.
I think the Executioner player will be purchasing some of the new forgeworld chain axes they produced for the terminators. Expect to see more of those in the future.
Thanks guys! Pictures of Huron will be up eventually, try to stay calm. I do have to admit, this last week was very unproductive in the painting department. I, however, was not wasting my time. I was revamping my list. Which means I have to switch up some projects a little bit, I'll need to get I believe one, possibly two figures, and of course paint them etc.
What little painting I have gotten done has been some dry brushing and some calthan brown on a missile launcher. Nothing to exciting. The weekend is free of plans though so I am hoping to get more done.
Rule of the day! You CAN shoot both your cyclone missile launcher and your storm bolter. Neat!
Thanks guys. The ice crystals did turn out awesome. They are a lot of fun to play around, but kind of a pain to store. Some day down the road I want to make some more of them but in different lay outs, like on their sides or substantially shorter.
Outside of a lake, I think I have all of the ice terrain kinds covered.
TUESDAY! What a wonderful day Tuesday is. The anger of Monday has passed and you've resigned to your fate of monotonous work and the uphill fight for the weekend truly begins. Sometime during that struggle to find motivation today, you probably thought to yourself, I wonder what Ice has been up to. WELL YOU'RE IN LUCK! I have heard your psychic pleas and I am here to show you. I have not one but two photos to give you an idea of what marvels I have been slowly plugging away at and given the overwhelming response I have been receiving as of late on my P&M page that you are currently reading, I shall keep them from you NO longer.
Both pictures are a bit blurry, sorry, but they give you a good idea of the current WIP state my models are in. The first picture is all that remains left to be done in my adepticon force, minus one figure and the objectives. The second is a blurry close up Huron himself. I am very happy with Huron's progress. I have had that model for several years now and its nice to see him finally coming together. He has already had his first wash and eagerly awaits more.
Today's post was sponsored by the word Tuesday, the number 2, and the song Champagne Supernova, by Oasis.
How funny Ice. I too sat down and painted today. First time in many days. My progress is not so stunning as yours. Still, progress is progress. Love the way the Tyrant is coming along.
Great progress. He looks good in the proper colours. Im not a fan of the silver and blue Astral Claws. Cant wait to see more... esp how you'll paint the Arnold head.. "Get Down!!"
Here is my missile launcher guy. After simple greening this guy and priming him, I think I lost some detail on his face. I'm still not sold on his head, especially as I stare at him blown up on my desk top. I may have to revisit this guy.
Below are some more WIP pictures of Huron. The orange is coming along nicely. I started to do some other random pieces on him. Still much to do but I'm heading the right direction. Progress is always good, right?
Gitsplitta wrote:Progress IS always good.
Huron is looking fantastic.
Nothing every looks good blown up and splashed across your desk top. If you want your stuff to look good... stop posting pics on dakka.
lol, so stop posting pictures on dakka eh? I don't think any one would read my thread if I didn't post pictures on it.
Yellowbeard wrote:Woo! Love that ML! And Huron! It's almost enough to make me switch side. Nice work, Ice.
Come over to the good side YB. We have cake and death.
Solar_lion wrote:Most excellent..
Thanks SL!
cormadepanda wrote:hmm the grey lions on the orange, are not going it for me currently. will have to see when it is finished. Excellent work as always ice.
Not feeling the grey? I'm not sure what other color I could paint them as. In the past, all of my other Tiger Claws have grey imperial crests on their chests. I figured I'd stick with the theme.
More WIP. I started some experiments on his banner. The plan is to introduce some other subtle colors and fix the center maelstrom. How do you guys feel about the light gray? Should I go to white or to more of a bone color?
As for the rest of him. I still need to complete his ghost razor and I think I'm going to add one more layer of highlight on his orange armor. After I complete the banner it'll be time to paint his head. Does it actually state any where that Huron was a white dude? I know in all of his pictures he is but those pictures are also of him wearing silver and blue as an Astral Claw, not a Tiger Claw like I painted him. It may be time for a change.
Gitsplitta wrote: Light grey... and I don't think his skin color would change just because he re-painted his armor.
You never know, some space marines are very concerned about their look. Clearly orange wouldn't compliment a nice pale skin tone so he fake baked and got himself a bit darker. Makes total sense.
whalemusic360 wrote:He wouldn't really be Huron if he wasn't white. Could be captain whatever of the tiger claws, but not Huron.
I disagree, I don't see why it would make a difference.
monkeytroll wrote:Huron is looking mighty fine so far Ice...particularly liking his loin cloth...
This could always be the Ultimates version of Huron
Thanks Monkeytroll! The loin cloth did turn out nicely. I thought about filling in each square and really filling it out but I like having more of the blackness along with the blue. Gives it more depth.
Solar_lion wrote:looks good, and I like the grey!
Paint him how you envision him to look.
Thank you Solar. I knew there was a reason I liked you more then Git. lol, just kidding Git!
cormadepanda wrote:well with that banner, the grey came back to a doing good with me. well done.
Thank you sir!
Here are some updates of where I'm at. The top picture is Huron and his body guards. Five are done, the other five are next in line. Its a nice looking bunch if you ask me. Second shot is an updated WIP picture of where Huron is at. I still need to complete his banner and fix some stuff around his collar. What do you guys think of his head? Yes, I know he isn't black like I previously mentioned doing but I wanted to give him gray hair and I couldn't get the gray hair black skin combo to look right so I went back to boring Caucasian.
IceAngel wrote: If you can praise the emperor without him around I dont see why you can't praise Huron.
Brother....That's different.. Like saying Chuck Norris and Jack black are awesome Martial Artists!
OK then..
Marine 1 " Praise the Emperor, Praise Huron... hey where'd he go , he was just here!"
Marine 2 " Dude,, didn't you hear, He cancelled !"
Marine 1 " Dude... No Way!"
Marine 2 " Way!"
Marine 1 "That's not good, those Mantis Warriors bought front row seats"
Marine 2 " Yeah! I feel sorry for any ships they run into on the way home!"
Marine 1 " Yeah! They most likely will not take to kindly to other SM chapters entering their personal space"
Marine 2 " Pass the word to the other chapers to stay clear, except those Fire hawk guys, Boy I hate those guys"
Okay, Huron is done. I also finished one of my terminators! Pictures will be up soon for both. In other good news, my LAST figure finally arrived today. My deathwing box came in and bits have already been chosen to make my "counts as" Belial. Plus, I found some nice extra bits to put on him so that he will have some Tigers on him. More pictures of that too.
So my check list of things to do is now down to,
0. Add some painted damaged helmets to Huron's base.
1. Paint four remaining terminators in the unit.
2. Build Belial
3. Prime Belial
4. Paint Belial
5. Take picture of completed Adepticon Army
6. Write fluff for Adepticon Armies
Here is my teammates Executioner Army, well everything except his rhino that he forgot to grab. He also has an extra HQ on the board. He painted up an awesome model for Thulsa Kane but he couldn't use him because he is now using the DA codex. I left him on there because he still looks cool. By the way, I strongly advise you click on this picture and zoom in on the models. They look great. Lots of dynamic poses and rich color.
Here is my updated Huron model.
All that is left is to decorate his base with damage helms from the other armies of the Badab War. I may enlist the help of some of my teammates if they have time. Please tell me what you guys think of Huron. Despite the fact that he isn't in my army list for Adepticon he will still be a center piece of my army and the display. Let me know if there is something you think I need to work on, while I have time to fix it. Thanks in advance!
The Executioners look really great! Very dynamic army that looks like it's in the middle of heavy action. Great job on Kane too!
I think Huron looks fantastic Ice. Great pose, vivid colors, nice job on the head (I can never get the teeth painted). He's going to be an excellent addition to the display. Too bad we couldn't all play our named characters like we'd originally planned. Just too much of a handicap.
Really! who doesn't like chain axes! Awesome job! Love the scouts and the pointy hats, Love the chain axe's. Thulsa came out nicely and the banner compliments the figure well.. oh and the chain axe's are awesome.
Super job on Huron. The face is particulary good. You have mastered that blue for sure my friend! look forward to putting him up front storming the bunkers!
Excellent Job Ice, Huron looks great! I love the banner and the blue.
I wish I commented sooner about the colour of his head. Paint it your way... I painted my Huron's head blue!!! I tried for the dead skin look Not sure i got it tho. One day I'd like to try again
Thanks guys. I stressed out about his skin for a long time, I hate to say. My skin painting capabilities are the reason my Ice Angels are great at void warfare, they all wear helmets! I will relay all of your kind words to my Executioner teammate.
I've been getting in some random work done on my guys today. The cyclone missile launcher terminator is next on my list. He is moving right along. Expect some pictures of him soon. Meanwhile, I took a whole mess of Executioner pictures for Gitsplitta. I made an entire gallery of them in my profile, please check them out. In the mean time here are a couple I think some of you may enjoy. Ramos, the first one is for you. Please pay close attention to the helmet in the sergeants hand. Thanks!
Here is another shot of Thulsa Kane. I liked this angel because you can also see the objective marker that the Executioners will be using at Adepticon.
Last shot, Executioner snipers. I love the helmets!
Wow, that's some beautiful work. Pass on my compliments to Steve. I have to say, I really like the pose of that Sergeant. Very nicely. Can't say that I feel the same about that bottom helmet on the objective marker, though....
Okay, more WIP pictures, like I promised! A couple shots of my new HQ, counts as Belial. I still need a shoulder pad and I'm debating on putting a Tiger on his shoulders. What do you guys think of the Tiger pelt on his back? The other marine is of course my cyclone terminator. I like the way he is turning out. Do you think I should paint the missile tips?
Thanks Git. I'm glad you like Belial. I need to figure out what I should name him because Tiger Claws didn't have Belial in their army that I know of. Perhaps, he shall be known as Laileb. Yes, commander Laileb.
DONE!
Do you have any suggestions on painting the cyclone missiles? I'm almost tempted to leave them silver.
Solar_lion wrote:I would do a little white tips on the missiles! make them stand out from the launcher.
Gitsplitta wrote:Yeah, you want some kind of nose cone.
Done! Picture will be here soon. I went with a fortress gray. I think you'll like the results.
Yellowbeard wrote:Looks great, Ice. Laileb is a nice figure. I like the pelt. Where's it from?
The pelt is actually from an empire sprue my buddy gave to me. I don't know what kit specifically, but it was a fantasy sprue with all sorts of knight lookin bits on it. I think they are suppose to be panthers but they pass as tigers just as well.
In other news I finished another terminator today and I did the first orange layer on another. Tomorrow Laileb gets primed and I'm going to try and finish the other termie. Almost there folks! I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow.
monkeytroll wrote: Could you do something with the high elf white lions pad, or even the head from a chariot pulling lion on his shoulder?
I found the high elf white lions pad too small for an Ork - so probably too small for a Terminator and possibly Marines as well. The chariot pulling lion head is *almost* too big for an Ork Warboss...
Spoiler:
Nice work Ice Angel. I may not comment much here, but I am following along!
Great suggestion. I agree it may be a tad to big but I may be able to use that on a dreadnought. Something to think about down the road. Thanks for following along too!
I will apologize in advance for the second picture, it came out a bit blurry but it was still better then the others.
Here is where I stand after this weekends work. I finished up the cyclone and the sergeant. I got a lot done with the third guy as well. I also primed Laileb and then promptly dropped him, breaking him into several pieces. Don't worry, the model and pieces didn't get damaged, they just came apart where I had glued them.
The tattered remains of a banner. In that picture its not in focus at all but its a fire angel banner. The edge of the symbol is on the banner, there is actually another piece of it on the ground next to his foot.
WIP for Laileb. As you can see there is still a TON to do, but for the past fifteen minutes I've been staring at him trying to decide, gray robe or blue robe. The wings on his shins will be gray, his sword will have the standard blue lightning lines. Pretty much everything else will match all the other marines in the army.
To give you an idea what the two may look like you can look at these guys for example. Huron and Corien, I like the way both turned out but for some reason I'm not sure I'm sold on which route to go with Laileb. I'm almost afraid that the blue will be too much and the gray not enough.
What do you guys think? I need some feedback. Thanks!
Wow that guy looks cool! I'd go for the gray robe, with maybe a few blue trim details like in the last pic. Blue I think would overpower the orange, especially as there's so much robe area. This way you might get a happy medium.
It looks like we're leaning towards the grey. I may put down the first dark coat of grey and take a shot.
Gitsplitta you crack me up. It does in fact say Tiger Claws, but Tiger Clams does sound a bit more exotic. I think you have just invented a new chapter!
I'd go lighter. Neither blue not grey.. I go with off white with a slight sepia wash. Something that make him stand out from the common SM. Something that says Commander, Hero, Heck of a nice guy! Finish with scroll work on it.
Afterall he is our leading commander of the rebel forces. Crusher of the Red scorpions (didn't Huron already beat Crabby up once already?) and their toady allies! ME (Waiters of the SM's) , FH ( no explaination needed here - Hellllloooo) and the Mechannicus ( taste great , less filling)
Thanks everybody. I'm hoping to get some painting done here in the near future. Pics will of course follow.
Correction: I got some painting done tonight after some change of plans. I painted the robes gray and hit the model with a wash. Its amazing how much the wash helps on the orange. I like the way the gray is turning out. I'll try to get a WIP picture of it on Saturday.
Okay, here is where I am at currently. Laileb is coming along. I haven't started on his sword and I have only done the base coat on his cloak. Thoughts?
Thanks guys! I have returned from an unexpected funeral and I am now ridiculously sick. Damn you Michigan! On the bright side I will be home for the next few days hacking up junk and popping pills. Before my three hour nap today I did managed to get a tiny bit completed. We're almost done now, the end is so close!
I need to work on his sword a bit more and touch up a couple things that the picture has revealed. Once I finish this guy my army is complete.
Here is my army, thus far. What do you think? The picture is very zoomable.
Love that libby... You're army is looking great Ice. When you're ready for your final photo shoot, let me know before you take your shots. I can give you some hints as to what I'm looking for.
Oh and one more.. sorry dude.. the pommel on the dagger need to have a touch of that same gold! Just want our commander to be perfect as well as forboding!
Thanks guys. It's always nice to see any of my pictures on the front page. It seems more often then not, my pictures from Adepticon show up, just not pictures of my own figures. I'm hoping to take another big group of photos and fill another Adepticon folder. I'll let you know once that's done.
As for my own P&M stuff, I've done very little. A little Tiger Claw touch up here and there. I did manage to bust out a kit that I've been holding on to for about a year now. Here is his WIP.
I have to say I am very impressed with the Stompa kit. Lots of great options and extra bits, very customizable as all ork vehicles should be. Now if you pay attention to the picture you'll notice that one arm is still missing. Last year for my birthday my buddies went in and got me a lifta droppa arm. I LOVE the lifta droppa. Ever since Space Marine came out with models for lifta droppa tanks I've loved them. So simple and SO orky! However, the forgeworld kit has to be the worst forgeworld kit I've ever owned. All of it was covered in excessive amounts of flashing and there were several pieces that were horribly miscast. Several of the pieces don't even fit together right and I'm not sure they can be pinned. I hate to say it but I'm super disappointed with the lifta droppa.
Adepticon is next weekend and I'm nearly ready. My army is completed but I still have some miscellaneous work to do. One of those projects was to write up some fluff. Here is the first story. Huron Story
At some point during the past week or so I also randomly starting drawing on my son. I am not much of an artist but check it out.
I still have one more story to complete before Adepticon. I'll post another link up for that once it has been edited.
FWCS is crazy good. If you call them (or maybe talk to them at AC?) they will replace anything you need. They just sent me some Bloodthirster bits after he found he cannot, in fact, fly.
@Gitsplitta - It was my first attempt. I think the Ice Angel symbol I drew on his back turned out better. Either way, it was a lot of fun to make.
@whalemusic360 - That's good to know. I plan on opening up everything before I even leave Adepticon with my next order.
@Solar_lion - He'd actually prefer to grab a tank or marine in his death grip and then smash it against whatever is nearby. Typically that thing is me.
By the way, PRAISE HURON! He arrives Friday and is prepared to slay those lap dogs the Imperial bureaucrats sent to his sector of space. All Hail Huron!
Finally found some time to check out your blog fully instead of catching snippets here and there. I've really enjoyed everything you've produced! Funnily enough there are actually some similarities between your Ice Angels and my first army The Lost Souls, I'm looking forward to seeing if there are any more similarities in the fluff.
Speaking of fluff, can you send me the word document when you can so I can read it offline? I don't think I could manage reading your whole fiction blog on Dakka. I'll pm you my email address. Enjoy Adepticon!
Despite my lack of posting as of late, I have been rather productive. The stompa is ready for priming. I have a battlewagon ready for priming. I also managed to put together about a dozen orks of various kinds. All of them are based and ready to be primed.
In the mean time, I have a question. I have had several different conversations about primer. I typically use the GW primer for my models but I've heard that it doesn't coat as well if you're priming FW resin models. I have only painted a handful of FW models and I honestly couldn't tell a difference. Have any of you noticed any difference?
Also, what other primers have you guys had success with?
You should be cleaning the FW models quite a bit more than GW. A bucket of hot water with some dawn or similar. The reason GW primer sometimes has issue is its not a true primer, it's just black paint.
WalMart has a brand of really cheap gray primer: Color Place Gray Primer.
I'm not much of a fan of WalMart, but for $1 a can, I make an exception. It covers smmothly, and I've had no problems with it. I haven't seen any difference between plastic and resin, but as WM said, you have to clean the resin well.
This has been said 18, times, so here's one more: Wash the models. You should be washing anything you get, because there's always mould release. Resin is typically the worst, but even plastic sprues have it.
Hello dakka. How are you today? May the fourth be with you!
After my last post about a stompa and priming, I found myself needing to go to the store but not ever remembering to buy primer once I was there. So instead of priming models so I could paint them, I ended up with more and more models that needed priming. Personally, I find it easier to squeeze in time to do a little cleaning on a model, or cutting putting one together. At least for these smaller models. Today is finally nice enough weather wise to prime and I find myself with several different kinds of primers to experiment with so I figured I'd share with you all what I have in store and whats in the pipe line.
Below this small bit of text there will be a handful of pictures in an order that I have already forgotten. There should be a small group of tactical ice angels, several storm boyz, several regular boyz, a grot musician, a bag of sanguinary guard bits that were just removed from the sprue, a box of resin models that need to be washed, and several nobz that were made from the fantasy black ork kit. I also need to clarify that most of those orks are not my doing. I have the board, so we always play games here, because of that my gaming group decided we should have a standing house army. SO we all contribute to the ork horde and occasionally some orks are dropped off at my house to be primed. Random people then paint them however they want. It makes for a truly bizarre horde of orks.
@Solar - Yeah, the summer definitely has a lot in store for me.
Today the priming went well. Once they stop reeking of paint fumes I'll be bringing them in for some pictures. I'll have some nice comparative shots with the GW black spray paint and some cheap primer. One of the cheap primers I bought worked great and covered really well. It also turned out to be a nice charcoal color instead of straight black. That should give my Ice Angels a bit more depth, which is something they have lacked in the past. Black has always proven to be more difficult then you'd first think.
While they have been drying I've been cleaning and preparing my Sanguinary Guard bits. I am very excited about them. That is a fantastic kit. I made the tough decision to go with the banner too. It's a lot of points but I think worth it if you can coordinate your attacks.
Solar - Yes, the tiger claws are back on hold until they are called to duty once again. The Angels need some love too you know. I can't forget about my name sake. Which reminds me, I have a GMS to post a picture of. YOUR GMS! I need to fix his base to match my army then he'll be part of the club. It sounds like there will be a battle at the end of the month. Perhaps he'll make an appearance.
I liked your suggestions. What do you think Solar?
That model looks seriously ace, Ice. I agree with the pommels getting a bit of gold, but aside from that its awesome. Making me want to do something with grey robes now
Thanks guys! Don't fret Solar there will be some Tiger Claw painting this summer at some point, just not right away.
Oh crap, I was going to post some pictures of the primed guys. I also think that Cormadepanda requested some ork pictures. Be right back!
Automatically Appended Next Post: First up a picture of two apothecaries that I put together. You can see how they'll look once finally assembled.
The marine on the left was primed with super cheap primer. The one on the right was primed with GW black. The GW paint has more of a gloss look and the cheaper stuff isn't as black.
Here is Solar's Apothecary, btw. He needs to have his base completed and he needs a name. Any suggestions?
The next section is dedicated to Cormadepanda. Here are a couple snap shots of the ork horde all painted by various people. Some of them still need their bases done, please don't hold that against them.
As some of you may know Gitsplitta is having a Mantis Challenge. I decided that I wanted to get in on this so I began brainstorming some ideas. I was discussing this with my hermit friend Steve and we came up with some fantastic ideas. When we were done we had decided to make a diorama. Now in my mind there are several different important times in the Mantis Warrior Chapter's History. You have the pre Badab war time, the post Badab War crusade, and finally you have the Post Crusade Mantis Warriors (or modern mantis warriors). Some people are also making Mantis Warriors that turned to chaos. Of all of these times, the ones that interested Steve and myself the most were the Mantis Warriors that were stuck in a 100 year crusade, unable to resupply. So we went about collecting bits and sorting out our scene. The final effect will be a group of Mantis Warriors that are nearing completion of their crusade, being visited by the Inquisition, to confirm that they are still loyal and pure. Throughout the crusade they have picked up whatever they can from their fallen allies and enemies.
Per rules, here is a picture of the bits. I will apologize up front, it was done with a phone and the lighting was terrible.
The next picture is of our Inquisitor and his henchman.
Next are our loyal Mantis Warriors. Being that they have been crusading for 100 years, we figured they would have all sorts of random weapons and armor in use by this point. What few weapons that are left and still functioning are true relics to the chapter. In total we created a librarian, a tech marine, and some veterans.
@Gitsplitta, sir william the bold, and Dr H - Thanks guys. I'll let Steve know how much you guys like the Mantises. Steve actually put all of those guys together. I've been figuring out the scenic base they'll all be on. I will be painting some of them though. I am very much looking forward to that.
Many of those heads are Empire Fantasy heads. The blind librarian is a flagellant head. The tech marine is a standard space marine head. The pointed "executioner" head on the Inquisitorial henchman is from some European website. I'd have to dig to try and find that one again.
Some really great work here Ice! Need to lurk some more and see all the goodies before i comment in more (any) depth, but im really loving what you are doing

Thank you sir! Please comment more and often. I always appreciate CC.
Exactly! Not a single bolt pistol or bolter either. One plasma pistol and a power fist. The remaining weapons are black powder guns, an auto pistol, laspistol, and lots of close combat weapons.
Try not to look at it that way Saky. This competition is to help spread the Mantis Warrior love, not bring intense competition. Besides, Mantis Warriors are incapable of winning, just ask Git. When is the cut off date for entries into the competition any ways? Something tells me I need to decide how to make this display base, ASAP.

Thanks for following my thread, btw.
thanks Ice. I'm actually not so competitive (should have put some smiling orkz ehehhe).
It was just a way to compliment You on the project
Hmmmmmm, there has been minor progress in the painting department and almost negative progress in the display board. I have spent the past few days tinkering with various ideas but I don't like any of them. It's like having writers block with modeling. Have you ever wanted to make something but haven't been able to convince your brain as to what that "thing" is? I want to make a display board that is square, holds five mantis warriors, and two inquisitor guys. After that its all a jumble of ideas, all of which seem to conflict in one way or another.
Maybe the new daft punk cd will make me feel better.......
Nope. What a disappointing cd.
Okay dakka, I need to have my concept picked by Tuesday! TUESDAY! grumble grumble grumble.....

Seems like you got all the idea you need. Your over thinking it mate.
I have this on a regular basis. But that's because I keep doing "Epic Projects" like my Thunderhawk Transporter kitbash, and I get stuck at the beginning...
...and a little into the project...
...and in the middle...
Etc.
Best thing is to arrange your parts, look at them, and walk away. Your brain will process in the background, so when you come back, you have a better chance at that 'flash of insight'.
I have finally gotten around to taking some pictures of the small bit of progress I've made. BUT, the important part is that I have finally made up my mind on what I want to do. The hard part is now behind me. It's all down hill from here!
Step 1 - Cut board
Step 2 - Cut foam board to fit board, then cut holes out to place models in so their bases will be flush
Step 3 - Take picture of board with proxy models in it.
Step 4 is going to be gathering appropriate sized foam boulders. Time to bust out the foam cutter!
I'm confused? is this for the MW contest? I see alot of other chapters.. Care to expand on the design concept ( no worries if you want to sting us along) ?
Thanks guys! I've made some good progress on the mantis display. Tomorrow I plan on sanding the board and if everything dries in time I may put down some primer. If I can get that done then I should have the board done in a few days.
Today I finished my Inquisitor. I thought about posting some pictures but before I created this post I saw the great job Solar did on his guy. His post seemed to come out of no where. It caught me by surprise. I mean, I didn't even know he was making a mantis warrior. SO I then thought to myself, maybe I should not post any more pictures so when the final product hits the web, it'll be like. BAM!
You can now all thank Solar_lion for surprising me because I will now refrain from posting more WIP pictures. Not until the project is finished will your eyes be allowed to massage my photos. (That sounded inappropriate, I apologize)
As you all know, time is running low. Saturday is the due date. There is still much to do but it's nearly completed. The seven figures are all painted minus some details here and there, including one mantis insignia. The necessary paint for their display base has arrived. That's my project for tomorrow evening. Shouldn't take to long, depending on drying time for the paint.
Trickiest part of the completion will be the pictures and how I want to post them. Due to the number of figures and the size of the board, I may go for a single file with multiple image collage effect thing. I'll post lots of separate pictures here but only one on Gits page that will highlight some of the coolness of the display. I think that sounds fair. I don't want to clutter Gits thread any more then it is.
You can post a collage pic in the main post on my blog and include the supporting pics as spoilers. When I link your "entry" for the judges (and everyone else), I'll link them to the submission post on my blog so people can see and judge everything if they so choose.
Looking forward to seeing what you guys came up with!
You should add the detail photos as spoiler in your submission post. Seriously awesome work, you should use the bully pulpit of my blog to show it off!
I have to say, after flying through the Mantis Warrior project I have come to a complete painting halt. Instead I've been doing a lot of writing. My desk, though, is still covered with unpainted marines, some terrain, and a now silver stompa. I hope to once again have some motivation to get some painting done. We shall see!
It has been almost a month since my last post on my own P&M thread. That is disgraceful. I have been working on random things but I don't have to much to show for it. HOWEVER, i did get my Apocalypse rule book today. Before the book had even come out I had already scheduled an Apocalypse game. There will be a battle report. There will be pictures and it will be awesome!
After I read through the rule book the scenario will be created and more information will be dumped. It looks like we'll be having an Ice Angel and Space Wolf army versus a Tyranid and Ork horde unless any of you live near me and want to hang out August 7th. A short narrative will be created. If any of you fine readers would like to some how contribute to the narrative some how please let me know. I'm always up for suggestions. Heck, if any of you are planning to have any battles between now and then please let me know and I'll use the results to influence our game. That'd be fun.
Briancj, if you're reading this. Prep the Ordinatus!
Da Bomma Korps of Boss Rottslagg are at your service! Active force: 6 Deffkoptas, 3 Fighta-Bommas, two pulsa Rokkits, and one Blasta Bomma "Da' Beheada"!
I managed to chat with everyone today about the game and I got a good idea of where we'll be at points wise. It looks like we should somewhere in the 10,000 point neighborhood per side. The Ice Angels and Space Wolves will be 5k each, the orks have come in just under 4k and the Tyranids will be around 6k worth. With this in mind I started thinking about the table and how everything will fit onto my board. I have an 8 by 4 board fully painted and more then enough terrain to cover it all with some to spare. Do you guys think that'll be enough space? There will be a Green Tide and an Endless Swarm. I could always use another table it just wouldn't look as cool. Now that I think about it. I could always make another board. I'm not sure that'll be necessary though.
Next thought: I have well over 5,000 points of Ice Angels. What should I bring? I know my teammate is bringing the Space Wolves Great Company. Of all the Blood Angel detachments I only have the models enough to field The Black Rage, which will be happening for sure! I don't have enough Land Raiders for the Lucifer Armoured Task Force and I only have half the number of 10 man assault squads required for the Wings of Sanguinius. Both of those detachments should be easy to obtain in the future though. Outside of that, I am so excited about this game that I don't know what to bring. I think my Ice Angels will be forced to bring as many large blast template weapons as I can field.
I do ideed, Ice. However, I've no money to travel anywhere, nor do I have anyone around here that plays 40k! (well, save for WM, but I KNOW I dont have enough points to match up against him!
Alas, ill have to sit on the sidelines and root for da Boyz.
As for the size of the board.... Hmm... Its a lot of models, and not a massive space... I think it'd be tight, but manageable. Just expect a few hours per assault! xD
And definitely templates galore! Xenos mobs go BOOM!
Whale, as much as I'd appreciate your super heavies I think I like the challenge of trying to beat a Stompa and a Barbed Heirodule without the use of my some titan or equivalent tank. And yes, I do have a weakness for infantry. However, if I ever started an Imperial Guard army I'd have nothing but tanks. I think it has something to do with the look of space marine vehicles. Planes however, are another story. I have one storm raven and a talon, and that is unacceptable. I'd love to have many more fliers in my future. Some of those Forgeworld fliers would be delicious in black and blue.
After further reading and discussion with my cohorts, we are going to try the 8 x 4 board this time and try to use the scenarios to our advantage. Plenty of reserves and deep strikes etc. At the rate I expect things to die, we should be able to move things right along. At least that's the thought. Believe me, there will be plenty of pictures and a giant battle report to back it all up so we can all learn together. YAY!
I'm running six starship bridges at Gencon. Come visit.
Ice, I have found that for the "big games" you want to have enough space for each players to deploy their forces. A good rule of thumb is to take the amount of points one side has, and divide by 1000, or one foot per 1000 points. Since you have 10,000 points per side, that's a table ten feet long by four feet wide. Give yourself some wriggle room, and make it twelve feet long.
You will also want side tables for people to put their armies on, to speed deployment and reserves. And beer.
--Brian, veteran of a dozen mega-battles, ones even pre-apocalypse.
At GenCon? Lords no, but there is a ForgeWorld booth, and a fantastic 4 days of gaming.
If you just enjoy 40k, then you're better off going to a con like AdeptiCon (as I know you do). If you enjoy all sorts of gaming, then GenCon is something you should visit.
Yep, usually the 40k games and tournaments at GenCon are store driven not company run. I even played one that was run by two random guys, no sponsors or anything. GenCon is a very huge event that covers a little bit of everything, but GW does not have a strong presence.
I go every year and spend 4 days demoing games. It's fantastic. My wife even gets a vendor pass through work and gets in a day early. Even with both of us spending all that time, it still isn't enough time to see everything.
My opponents have been giving me good ideas of points that they'll be bringing. Orks are 3601. Tyranid force 1 is 3280. All that's left is the second Tyranid force which will be the largest of the three. With that in mind, my teammate Moonpie and I decided to plan out around 5k each. Here is my first draft of what I'll be fielding for the Apocalypse game.
The Black Rage -
Astorath the Grim,
1 Chaplain
Brother Sattawatzu - Death Company Dread in a drop pod with a deathwind launcher (because I can)
Brother Mattawatzu - Death Company Dread in a drop pod
Death Company x6 + Lemartes - jump packs, 1 powerfist, 1 power weapon
Death Company x6 - jump packs, 1 powerfist, 1 power weapon
Death Company x6 - jump packs, 1 powerfist, 1 power weapon
Characters
Captain Ruusa - Captain with a jump pack, power axe, and storm shield
Captain Razzik - Captain with powerfist and storm shield
Boarding Master Bel Quapoo - Captain with Thunder Hammer Storm shield
Tech Marine Philosir - servo harness, power axe
Librarian Vayu - jump pack
Master Librarian Duggon Frostclaw - jump pack epistolary
Sanguinary Priests - x4 - 3 jump packs, 3 power weapons, 1 plasma pistol
Strike Force White Out
Assault Squad x10 - powerfist, 2 flamers
Assault Squad x5 - power weapon, inferno pistol
Assault Squad x5 - powerfist, meltagun
Assault Squad x5 - thunder hammer, meltagun
Vanguard Squad (which consist entirely of guest marines from the swap thread) - all sorts of power weapons, fists, plasma, etc
Sanguinary Priest with a power weapon
Brother Frakkatazuli - Furiouso Dreadnought
Storm Raven with hurricane bolters - which will carry the priest, vanguard, furiouso and Captain Razzik
Whirlwind
Whirlwind
Vindicator
Vindicator
Baal Predator with inferno cannon and heavy flamers
Devastator Squad x10 - 4 lascannons, powerfist
This is 5075 points. All of it is painted and WYSIWYG. If I get extra points there will be more assault squads, possibly more death company, maybe even an assault squad in a crusader. My team mate will be fielding a space wolf army comprised entirely of infantry many of which will be wolf guard terminators.
Wow this thread is epic!
Just looked through the whole thing and everything is awesome!
I really love your Ice Angels and your tiger claws, the painting on them is perfect!
The diorama of the Mantis Warriors being visited by the Inquisitor is especially cool.
Despite my lack of posts I've been slowly working on a wide variety of projects. I didn't take pictures of all of them but I do have a couple pics to give you an idea of what I've been spending some of my hobby time on.
Both models have lots of crap still left to do, especially the Stompa. I really enjoy the models but good gracious that's a lot to paint. I haven't even started on the Stompa's lifta droppa arm. I'm not sure I'll have them completed by my Apocalypse deadline but they'll at least have enough on them to not look to horrible on the battlefield. Speaking of which, has any one seen a Khorne Lord of Battle converted into a Stompa yet? I haven't but I think its a fantastic idea.
Oh I almost forgot. I need a name for my Stompa. GO!
Absolutely! Rainbow Stompa does not care what preference you have in partners or even what race or species you are. All Rainbow Stompa cares about is that you DIE! STOMP DA HUMIES!
Thanks guys! This Wednesday is my apocalypse game. Be prepared for a report plus some. I have the next couple of days off to prepare for it so we should be able to see some work get done. I think I will have to paint Fear Da Rainbow some where on the Stompa too. Good idea Whale!
In other apocalypse related news my other opponent checked in over the weekend and let us know he will be bringing 4,463 points worth of nids. That brings us up to around 11500 points on the xenos side. I thought about tossing in some bastions for them to get some more points but I'm afraid board space may be an issue. To counter act that it looks like our scenario will be bringing in guys in waves so it may work out just fine. BUT more on that tomorrow.
So, Ice, whats left to do? Well, Ice, I'm glad you asked. I need to type up some army lists. Finalize our scenario. Set up the board. Get everyone over to for deployment before Wednesday that way when everyone arrives we can get started RIGHT AWAY! Time permitting I'm going to try and work on the Stompa. Oh, and make some snacks.
Random question everyone! What's your favorite snack to have while playing 40k?

Favorite Snack: Umies. But if no Umies, I enjoy pretzels because they dont get all over your hands like chips, also if you can soft pretzels.. and a beer.
cormadepanda - pretzels? Fair enough. Beer? Can you be a bit more specific? Are you talking like a crisp cool PBR? lol
Yggdrasil - Sparkling water eh? Is that sparkling water with something or straight up? Whenever the sparkling water shows up at my house it doesn't arrive alone. I try to keep my alcohol away from my 40k. To many breakables.
Solar - I'll be taking the pictures from time to time. The goal is to take the pics on my opponents turn. Lots of pictures will be had though. Don't you worry about that!
IceAngel wrote: Yggdrasil - Sparkling water eh? Is that sparkling water with something or straight up? Whenever the sparkling water shows up at my house it doesn't arrive alone. I try to keep my alcohol away from my 40k. To many breakables.
Nah, straight up........... The point of "breakables density" stands at my place too
Despite having 20,000 points of Ice Angels to choose from. I don't have a single apocalypse vehicle or super heavy for my army. For me personally, i think its better that way. My friends that play orks and tyranids don't play as much as Moonpie and I so it's almost like having a built in handicap. Trying to fight a Stompa without a super heavy of my own is its own challenge and I'm looking forward to it.
Speaking of which, here is my official army list.
Apocalypse Ice Angel Army List - 5695
1560 - Black Rage 220 Astorath the Grim
100 Chaplain – Hangs out with Fire Team Ice Castle
180 Death Company Dreadnought – Drop pod w/ deathwind
160 Death Company Dreadnought – Drop pod
400 Death Company x6, jump packs, 1 powerfist, 1 power weapon + Lemartes (7 total)
250 Death Company x6, jump packs, 1 powerfist, 1 power weapon
250 Death Company x6, jump packs, 1 powerfist, 1 power weapon
795 Vehicle Support 90 Whirlwind
90 Whirlwind
150 Vindicator w/dozer blade
145 Vindicator
140 Baal Predator lots of flamers
180 Predator Annihilator – all lascannons
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh I almost forgot. Does someone have the rules for grot tanks? I was supposed to get the rules before the game but they won't be arriving until afterwards. I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance.
Thanks guys. The stompa still has a long way to go but the little things like that really help give that massive model some character.
Btw my apocalypse game has come to an end. It was a nasty nasty fight with insane amounts of casualties and death. In the end the Imperials won on victory points BUT we only got through four turns. Had we had time to play two more I fear it would have quickly gone south. Our only saving grace was that we held objectives for most of the game giving us a big point lead. The points ended up 29 us, 17 them.
More pics will show up on the battle report page sometime in the near future.
Wait no longer sir. The report is up. Once I get a response I'll work on a nice recap for you.
BTW, GenCon has been great. I've played dozens of demos and picked up some nice games. Got in a few rounds of magic, bought lots of gifts for family and friends, got an artist to paint myself, my wife, and my son as planeswalkers. I met Wil Wheaton. I purchased more dice, because you can never have enough. OH, i purchased a massive project. I mean, I found a great deal. I got the Imperial Sector box for next to nothing. SCORE!
There were some great warhammer events this year. Including a massive apocalypse game. I didn't play in it but I checked it out. Forgeworld was there selling their wares. Lets see what else................
I think that sums most of it up. Tomorrow is the last day so I'll be running around getting the left over deals. Time to pick up the newest dominion expansion and possibly the newest pathfinder book. We shall see!
Today I got to play with an air brush for a bit. One of my friends just bought one and it was a lot of fun. There may be an airbrush in my future at some point down the road. I wish I had taken some more pictures of some of our experiments. Everything is still at his house as well so I can't exactly take one right now either. One piece that I did bring back was a terrain bit I had started awhile back.
Today we messed around with the broken stone aquila. I really like the way its turning out. Now I just need to paint everything else on this piece. In the meantime we started working on my ork bastion that I made months and months ago. I left that for my buddy to mess with. Who knows what that'll look like when its done.
Yggs, earlier you had requested a picture of my family planeswalker portrait.
The image turned out WAY more yellow then it really is in real life, but the picture itself turned out great. What do you think?
I'm glad you like it Yggs. It's actually the third piece we've commissioned from that artist. The first one we did he drew myself and some friends of mine as zombies. The second one was a large group of us so he made half of us as good creatures fighting the other half, which were of course evil creatures. I just noticed I'm terribly evil looking in all three of these pieces.
As for the airbrush, I plan on using my friends a bit more before I make any decision. I'll keep you all posted of course.
I should have turned the terrain piece around before taking the picture. The aquila is covered up from that angle. More pics will come once I get more of it completed.
I have made minimal progress on my terrain. I have spent more time sifting through the bits box. I need to make a marine for Ramos.
Brother Ruqum is the marine on the left. That was what I sent to Ramos last time. Wow that was a long time ago. That was before I had standardized my army. Brother Ruqum isn't even painted the proper Ice Angel assault marine format. Tsk tsk.
The question is now, what should I send Ramos. I am unfortunately out of jump packs. Perhaps an all white death company marine like Brother Utaan.
But without the jump pack of course.
Or perhaps a veteran, like one of Uttuakki
or more like an Ashur-bani
Currently Ramos is sending me an updated Brother Jaska of the marines Chrysemys. He wields a powerfist and a plasma cannon.
Hahaha A very long time ago indeed! I'm sure we'll both find our painting skills have greatly changed through the many years.
As to suggestions, I'm afraid I cant make any. I am perfectly content letting your mind run wild with your marine.
I do quite like the colors of Uttuakki, though.... Just sayin
Each veteran unit has a different color they paint their helmet with. Uttuakki are orange. Ashurbani are purple. I haven't named the others yet but if you have a particular color you like I can make a new veteran squad and give you the first member that I paint. He will also be ridiculously equipped, for sure.
I do like the Uttuakki ! The orange is awesome, next to the blue & black !!
[edit : on a side note, and considering your post on the Swap thread, I might be tempted, if you're still up for it... The soon-to-happen SM release has me all psyched !!! ]
Maybe he's not a normal chaplain, maybe he's the keeper of the death company equivalent. Astorath isn't black, he's red. Xavier wore almost entirely green.
@Alfndrate, whalemusic360 - I think a nonblack chaplain would be cool. I wouldn't try to argue that with moonpie though. He has no imagination and doesn't like armies that go against tradition. I should know, he and I have argued this same thing for over twenty years now.
Ramos Asura wrote:What's the chapter heraldry of the Ice Angels? Jaska's getting a campaign badge.
Take the blood angel symbol but replace the blood droplet with a shard of ice and make the wings blue.
@Yggdrasil - thanks! I'd love to do a trade. I don't think I sent any ice angels to France yet. Do you have any requests?
Yggdrasil wrote: The soon-to-happen SM release has me all psyched !!! ]
And now are you still Psyched? after you got a chance to look at the new codex?
IceAngel wrote: I wouldn't try to argue that with moonpie though. He has no imagination and doesn't like armies that go against tradition. I should know, he and I have argued this same thing for over twenty years now.
20 Years and noone has put forth a compelling arguement that pursuades the other thru logic, wit and undeniable cold hard data? Ah... True friendship!
There have been plenty of discussion involving logic but moonpie doesn't handle logic well. It usually turns into him crossing his arms and repeating something like, "No, that's not how it should be. ". He will then change the subject.
moonpie wrote: Even in the Space Wolves, the Wolf Priests wear black.
Skull helmet + black armour + big stick=chaplain.
Too bad Chaplains only paint their armor black due to tradition started by the heretical dogs of the XVII Legion after Monarchia. Technically Chaplains only need the Crozius Arcanum to be Chaplains as that is their staff of office.
But it doesn't matter as players can paint their models however they want. I'd paint my Chappys black because my space marines are loyal sons of the Emperor, and the Ice Angels might be a codex chapter, but they might deviate a bit more than say my Ultramarines.
They do use xenos tech and get sent on a suicide mission after all. I think you should make your chaplain blue, tech marines black, and librarians red, just to make Moonpie's head actually explode.
whalemusic360 wrote: They do use xenos tech and get sent on a suicide mission after all. I think you should make your chaplain blue, tech marines black, and librarians red, just to make Moonpie's head actually explode.
Forgot Apothecaries. They can be blue as well.
Whale, your post made my day! Thank you.
Lets get back to some serious business though. I now have three Marine Swaps to work on. Motivation has returned! I'm still working on specifics on builds and such but expect some WIP pictures soon. In other exciting news, moonpie is bringing over the new space marine codex. Tiger Claw lists will soon be created. WOOT!
There's just nothing in the new book that changes the marine paradigm within the current meta. Yes, things area bit cheaper and they've got some new toys. LS Storms are now a dedicated transport, etc. Nice things all round. But nothing that changes SM from a (lower) second tier army to a first tier army. But then we all new that... there already were two 6th edition SM codecii out there, so their hands were tied when it came to making substantive changes.
It's not the end of the world... but I think SMs are solidly in the "fluff army" category. Nothing wrong with that. For the most part all I play are fluff armies. Just see them for what they are.
Great codex or not, you can still win with superior tactics and some good dice rolls. How do you think I won 4 out of 5 games last year with my fluffy DA list?
But enough of the complaining, it just came out, give it some time.
Back to MY P&M! If I'm painting a Tiger Claw that is in the early stages of chaos corruption, what color should the angelic jump pack wings be?
