Very nice. The color is even better when you zoom in. What color did you use to drybrush it with?

Those two ruins were dry brushed with different colors actually. The one on the left was done with a dark brown dry brush first. The one on the right was done with balor brown first which is more of a yellow. After that both were dry brushed with solar macharious orange. Then white.

Nothing to fancy but I think they turned out pretty good.

Thinking I'll repaint the buildings to closer match. I'm not liking how white /bright they turned out. I think the Mephiston red markings against the white/ snowy color makes them too cartoonish.

I managed to get a small game in today. We played a sentry game. He had four killa kans protecting the ork turret. I brought in a team of specialist to disable it. The alarm was triggered (thanks kvothe) and the reinforcements began to arrive. Time was short. The elite team applied some serious damage, but was it enough?

These were the final moments before the ork horde arrived. Mortifex and plasma cannon jaska kept them at bay but the marines were forced to retreat. 7 hull points were taken away from the turret.

We shall see if it will silence the deadly device once and for all.

GAH! Where did the time go?

Despite my lack of posting the work has continued. Not necessarily on the turret, but instead on a group of carnifexes that recently arrived at my house. I need to pin some arms and then prime them. First I need to find a freaking paper clip in this house! Pictures will soon follow. My carnifex brood is now up to seven, ringing in at around 1100 points. Mostly dakkafexes but a couple others to spice things up. As effective as dakkafexes are in game, they have to be the least attractive of the lot.

I have manage to play quite a few games lately, not of 40k, but of xwing. I do really enjoy that game. I keep telling myself that i should repaint some of the ships, but I think to myself. I already have a ridiculous amount of things that need to be painted, why repaint something that is already painted. Any ways, I hope you are all doing well. I have really been loving the new Tau stuff, good thing I sold my Tau all those years ago. When the new Tyranid stuff hits the shelfs though, I may get in trouble with the wife when the boxes start arriving.

X-wing really appeals to me as a game, partly because the prepainted ships won't interfere with all my 40k hobby....

Are the x-wing ships really shodderly painted then? I know I shouldn't expect much from prepainted, but...

Ice Angel's List of Things to do @ 2015/10/18 17:39:24

Post by: IceAngel

@evildrcheese I wouldn't say that the xwing miniatures are painted poorly. I would say that they are painted to the same standard as the average toy or game piece, BUT compared to what we see here on dakka or in the world of our hobby, they pale in comparison to even what I could accomplish.

@Moonpie hmmm yes, yes I did.

@yggdrasil would you agree with my above statement?

Ice Angel's List of Things to do @ 2015/10/19 05:49:42

Post by: inmygravenimage

If I may chip in, I would say that X-Wing minis are better than other prepaints (eg attack wing, heroclix), but Ice is quite right that they pale in comparison to what we're "used to". However. they're very satisfyingly quick to repaint.

Fair enough, I guess all I'm really after if a fall back game for when I can't get a game of 40k at the club so could probably live with the pre-painted models. Maybe I'll just add details as special accolades when some thing cool happens.

It is a great fall back game. Easy to learn, easy to play, lots of options and doesn't take too long to get a game in. Pick a faction, get a couple ships that look cool and you are ready to go!

I do like the idea of adding special accolades. That is a good idea. I should add tally marks to each one of my scum ships that destroys a vessel of moonpie's. Yep, that may have to happen.

So the ruins have taken over my painting time as of late. After the priming came a lovely blue on the ground and brown on the top. Then came another level of blue with an orange and purple up top.

Then came the first layer of white.

Next we hit the ground with another level of white and select spots of white on top. Then we go back and get all the fun details on this bad boy.

Any of you guys have any ideas, tips, or suggestions? I have never played more then a couple hundred points and this game could be more then double that very quickly. As far as I know there won't be any epic ships but who knows what may show up.

More than 300 pts without epic is pretty unmanageable, just so you know! I guess up to 400 is feasible but it's a bit unwieldy. @EDC it's awesome - do it!

Ice Angel's List of Things to do @ 2015/12/19 03:56:35

Post by: IceAngel

Okay, here is the scenario as it stands.

We both start with 200 points on the table. The table is much larger then a standard game size. There will be plenty of asteroids and debris. There will also be some satellites. We will each have two more 100 point squads that will be brought in as reinforcements. Every so many turns we automatically get our next wave of reinforcements. HOWEVER, if you get one of your ships to land on one of the satellites and you forgo making an attack that round you may remove the satellite from play to boost your signal. Meaning, your next wave of reinforcements comes in one turn sooner. The waves that arrive will be randomized to see what arrives next.

Game victory is determined by total points left on the board after a set number of turns.

Here is my only question, how many turns? In xwing you can play a TON of turns, they go by pretty quick. Should reinforcements be every 10 turns? 5 turns? Should the game last for 30 turns? I need to think about it. What do you guys think?

Ice Angel's List of Things to do @ 2015/12/23 02:23:44

Post by: IceAngel

Okay, before getting back to our regularly schedule program. Here are a couple pictures of the big game from yesterday.

Here is my Imperial Force. Back row is wave one at 200 points. The other two waves were 100 points each. One of the problems I ran into when making this list is that I really don't have enough Imperial Ships. I ended up over equipping a couple of them.

Here a couple of action shots from various turns.

Overall we played for about six hours total. We stopped at dinner time. When we did, he had more hull / shield points left. He was declared the winner. The satellite idea worked well. Bringing in waves of reinforcements kept the game turns consistent in length. The game was fast paced and well played by my opponent. His Han Solo was the bane of my existence. His K-wing with its SLAM drive was also a nuisance. Those two ships probably caused more damage then the vast majority of his force. By the time we had stopped they were both down to one hull point but his other remaining ships were still rather fresh. Mine on the other hand were becoming wasted space debris. My biggest lack luster units were my Firespray and my Shuttle. Whisper also got his butt kicked by some dismal rolling on my part. My MVP's were my two Interceptors. Kir Kanos and Carnor Jax, the two of them were very effective and lasted substantially longer then expected. In fact, Kir Kanos was in wave one and lasted the entire game. He had an amazing strafing run on Han Solo earlier on and rolled 6 evades in one turn. Overall, I don't think I would change to much other then borrow some additional imperial ships so that I don't end up with extra expensive ships.

Looks great! Firesprays are tricky ships. I still think the best way to run them is Scum, tbh (Kath, Andrasta, all the Bombs) much as pains me to say that! Interceptors are glass cannons so that's pretty impressive. Me, I love the Defender.

Yes thank you Gitsplitta. I will end up with more of them but typically I play Scum or Rebels. I do really want to pick up a decimater, it is such a cool looking ship.

I agree 100% with everything in that sentence except the last part. I like defenders currently. When Imperial Aces 2 comes out, I will then Love Defenders. Currently though they seem a bit over priced. In this game I brought Rexler Brath and he only took shields or did critical hits so he never actually got to use his ability.

It is a great game. It is currently filling my hobby time. My wife and I play a lot and she often does well. Ask Moonpie, she pretends to not understand the game then she swoops in and destroys everything. X-wing and pathfinder are the reason there haven't been any actually painting or modeling posts. I had a nice little battle today. 1000 points. Easy lists orks vs ice angels. I don't play nearly enough any more so we kept the lists very basic just to have a game without making it to complicated. Here are some pics of the battlefield and game in order.

My guys running through the ruins trying to get a meltagun into range of the battlewagon.

Him return firing. Both of us did NOTHING to one another.

His battlewagon rounding the corner before it disembarked his warboss and boyz. My terminators had just landed in that street moments ago.

The game was a blast and an absolute slug fest. Around turn 6 neither one of us had much left. By turn 7 this is all that was left on the board, a wrecked battlewagon, a handful of boyz, his warboss, and my four tactical marines. I had a drop pod on the other side of the board as well.

On his turn he was 10 inches away. He decided not to charge to try and keep my overwatch from taking effect. On my turn, I gunned down his warlord due to his awful rolls and saves. We ended the game here.

For funsies we reset this last instance and we played out him declaring the charge. I missed with all of my overwatch, not a single 6. He then rolled a 10 which would have got him into combat. It was a great game with a couple great moments. We also managed to play the whole game in only about 2 hours.

The battle fell through unfortunately, but it will be had and there will be pics.

Meanwhile, this week is GenCon. I am super amped, as always. My P&M blog probably isn't the best place to talk about it. Where would you suggest I start up a thread about it?

You coming to Indy, Ramos?

Consider it a date!

I'll be the one yelling KHAN! at random intervals.

Also, you are now officially press ganged into my search for OOP Empire models.

Because I need more empire, for um...reasons.

GenCon 2016:

GenCon finished up yesterday. It was an amazing few days of cluster gaming, visiting old friends, and spending a lot of money. Instead of the occasional recap throughout the week I figured I would just dump all of it at once. Please let me know if you want me to elaborate on any of the games I played or demoed. Here was the break down of my several days of gaming.

Thursday: Open day of GenCon. My wife and I got to the Con really early, mainly because my wife had a trade day pass. Which means she was already there on Wednesday at seminars and meetings, but more importantly it means she gets in an hour early on Thursday. SWEET! While she is waiting at the early gate I wandered to check out some of the other halls that were already open. In the gaming hall they already had thousands of people competing and demoing games with one another. I demoed King of New York. I watched a Battletech match with about 20 people all in their own individual pod. A wide screen was cycling through the action. It was awesome. Eventually I wandered back to the closed doors to wait to enter. By this time my wife had already been inside for about 45 minutes. In this amount of time she bought two games. One of those games, Seafall, sold out before the doors opened at 10 AM. When I finally got in, we demoed 7 Wonders. The game seemed fun but the chick running the demo had NO personality. We then visited an artist friend of mine, Sam Flegal. We chatted for a bit before we began to really hit the demos.

I didn't keep track of all of the games I demoed but there are a couple that really stuck out in my mind. First and foremost, Project: Elite. I wanted to buy this game and honestly, I do not know why I didn't but it was freaking awesome. It is a cooperative game that I demoed a total of three times during the con. The premise is simple, don't let the aliens get past you, but the system is unlike any other game I had ever played. After the planning phase you and your friends roll dice as fast as possible to try and kill the aliens while a timer ticks down from 2 minutes. You have to place your dice to activate your weapons and then you roll damage dice to see if you killed anything. Certain sides of the D6 allow you to move or to search or to activate things and at any time you can simple keep certain dice and reroll others until you get the results you want. One side of each dice makes you move one alien closer to your side of the board. All of your friends are doing this at the same time and it is a frantic mess of rolling and shouting and sudden changing of plans. I loved it.

On Thursday my wife and I played a huge game of Pompei. The board was a rug and the game pieces were cut up pieces of pool noodles. The volcano was two feet wide. It was the best game of Pompei I had ever played and I won! We also checked out Isle of Skye, it is a new award winning game from Mayfair. It had some mechanics like Carcasonne but each person had their own isle to build. Every time you play there is a collection of point systems that go into play at random so in one game lighthouses may be worthless and the next time they may be awesome. Great replay with that game.

Thursday we also check out the "Tiny" line of games. This company makes great quality games, also award winning, and each one is $30. The game boxes are all the same size, slightly larger then a paperback book. We played Tiny Galaxies and immediately bought it. Great little game and a great value. They jam a LOT into this boxes. Thursday afternoon we demoed a firemen game. Shoot, I forgot what it was called. It'll come to me. The premise was to save people in the building and get them out, as you can imagine. The base mechanics were very simple but they had a ton of optional rules you can add as you learn and play. Not really my kind of thing but I felt like it would be a great game to play for non-gamers. It would be a great gateway game, so to speak.

I almost forgot, Thursday for lunch I had the worst bowl of Udon I had ever had, but dinner was the best Thai food I had ever had. Thai Paradise, only a few blocks from the convention center. Hot Duck Curry, AMAZING!

Friday, we checked out probably a dozen games and went to the Concert Against Humanity, which is put on by the Cards Against Humanity folks. We had VIP passes this year which were awesome but the concert sucked. Last year it was the highlight of the CON, they had great comedians and musicians. This year they had several of the same musicians that played the exact same sets as last year and the comedians this year were not nearly as good. We will most likely not go next year FYI. Before the concert we did demo a dwarven drinking game that you would play with real drinks. You legitimately get drunk while playing this game, it sounded like fun. We also checked out Red Flag, which is a sister game to Superfight. After buying Superfight last year I think I would have rather had Red Flag.

Red Flag was hilarious, during your "turn" everyone else puts down cards to explain your date. These cards will be positive things like, very reliable, has three dragons, huge tits, loves to help out, etc. Everyone plays two of these cards. Next, each person will play a negative on someone elses date, like has explosive diarrhea when orgasms, spits bees when speaks, carries a knife for killing kittens, etc. You then have to pick the date you would go on. You of course want your date to be picked so you can get a point. It was simple and a lot of fun.

On Friday I also picked up the Character Trove box for Red Dragon Inn. The newest boss monster expansion that allows the game to go up to 6 players, AWESOME! For dinner we went to Scotty's. The bar played every Star Wars movie on Friday. The Ghostbusters on Thursday. Lots of geeky stuff, it was cool and great food.

Saturday, my wife and I played a game of Pathfinder. It wasn't run very well nor was our group very amusing, not really a great part of the CON. However, before that we played same great games by HABA, they make little kids games so we picked up a couple for my kids, one of which turned 4 yesterday. I demoed Seafall, and later found out that the guy running the demo was the creator of the game and the father of Legacy style games. Neat! That game is so cool I can not wait to start a campaign with it. I think legacy games are going to be a big thing in the future. Seafall is the first game to specifically be built in a legacy style format. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, a legacy game is a board game where the results in one game have ramifications in the next. Risk Legacy was the first version of this. In seafall, the game has pages of stickers and sealed miniature treasure chests. When certain milestones occur in the game, you will be instructed to open a chest, certain stickers will be placed on the board. Stickers will also be placed in the rulebook. As the campaign continues more things be placed on the board and the rules will change. Good news, no two games will be alike. Bad news, you only have about 15 plays of the game before you run out of stuff. Either way, the system sounds amazing.

I feel like I am forgetting a lot of things.

Happy Salmon - perhaps the silliest game we played at the con, but a great little game to kill some time.

Sounds like an action packed CON, the closest thing NZ has might be Armageddon (here in October, Yay!) but they don't have a lot of demo stuff.

Funny you mention pathfinder as well, I've just fallen very heavily into listening to Critical Role on Geek and Sundry and my god it's addictive, they use a hybrid D&D/Pathfinder rule set and all the PC's are voice actors. So good so far!

The DM from Critical Role was at GenCon this year. I haven't listened to it before but I should. I have heard good things about it.

Yesterday I actually managed to get a games workshop game in. Moonpie came over and we played a game of Age of Sigmar. We got out the Isle of Blood miniatures. We printed off the rules and the warscrolls and we went at it.

I have to admit, I really enjoyed it. We imitated the silly voices that elves and skaven would have and we went about ruthlessly cutting each other down. The ease of the system and the changes with combat were great. With that being said, my birthday is in two days. A small amount of funds will be sent my direction and I think some Sylvaneth will be purchased. That thought raised an interesting question amongst Moonpie and myself. How would I paint a force of nature on an ice world? Would you paint it realistically or go for something ridiculous, because MAGIC!

Discuss......

One more thing, I won the game.

I had a second game of age of sigmar yesterday. It was awesome. Very close. Btw, it seems there is very little AOS being sold around here. May have to go all the way to the GW store.

Thanks for the color ideas. I think i may have to experiment. Perhaps on some orks!

4 pages of rules and we got half of them right...

It was fun though. I'm looking forward to hopefully more. After all, I've got all the models. It would be nice to put them to use.

As to the color scheme, I would think greys and muted browns. Maybe some blues in there, with flashes of green and yellowy green as interior pockets of foresty magicky power blob light sources.

Trees in winter always look grey to me. And the leaves all over as brown like they are dying seems to make sense.

Look! I started something. I gathered all of my age of sigmar things. I put some together and repaired many. I started dusting the old stuff and I based a handful of them. I think the plan is to base them all and prime them. I doubt I'll paint them all but I think I'll select some to work on and just have fun with them.

I have not been sitting idle the past few weeks. I have been putting together Sylvaneth. Basing the old stuff. It is coming along quite nicely. I will take a picture tonight and post it, otherwise I am sure you will all demand proof.

Sunday is a battle. 1000 points. Three way game. More pics! The ice board will be in use. The river will be dusted and used. I am getting excited.

Blam! As promised. My goal is to have the Dryads build by Sunday. I have another treelord and wych that may have to wait. Once these are put together, they will be primed. Then the experimentation on some orks will begin. Still not sure where I want to go with the painting yet.

Okay, we had an awesome game today. I got my butt complete kicked but it was a lot of fun watching it happen. I have an idea for a little story to go along with this but my wife keeps bugging me to play other games so that'll have to wait. Here is a few pics from the game.

This is set up. I brought 900 points of Sylvaneth and my team mate brought 900 points of skaven and chaos. Our opponent brought 1800 points of High Aelves, (how do we spell it now?)

Close up of my side. Rats on the end. Slyvaneth in the center. Rat Ogres in the river. Lord of Plague off by himself.

This is was the majority of the Aelf situation. 50 archers, repeater, silver helms, griffon, mage, and sword masters. He had Reavers and Tyrion on the far side.

There are not to many pictures of anything else from this game but here was the break down. We ran forward, he bogged us down with silver helms and sword masters, meanwhile his archers DESTROYED us. This is the end of turn two.

You'll notice all 30 Dryads are gone. You'll notice the skaven are basically non-existent. Not only did the enemy kill us. Every time the skaven player took a chance at wounding himself, he completely killed himself. In fact both his engineer and warp thrower killed themselves on the same turn. It was frustrating and hilarious. My rolls were one catastrophic failure after another, but it was still a blast. I did however learn a lot. I learned that I need to be using the rules from the sylvaneth book, not the Book of Order. I learned that Durthu is awesome but still not nearly as effective as a bunch of cheap troops with bows. I learned that playing Sylvaneth is really hard when you don't have any terrain that you can call woods.

That being said, I can't wait to play again. Hopefully in a few weeks. In that time I need to put together another Dryad and a treelord. Then a crap load of priming and to the painting. At some point during this I will also have to figure out how to make some forest looking ice features. I already have some ideas, some really good ideas.....

Thanks Solar! I'm fully aware of the Grey problem.

Gits, when you mentioned it before I started reviewing images and studying the varieties of foliage. Lots of great pictures out there for sure. I have an interesting idea for some terrain though that will count as forest. I have been thinking about the best way to do it. I will share more when I am next on my computer. I want to show you guys some reference pictures.

I do really appreciate the ideas and suggestions as always but I think I want to go for some forests that look a bit more magical.

Stay tuned

These are some interesting plant creatures from the game of magic in the city covered plane of Ravnica. There are lots of cards that use them. Google Ravnica Saprolings and check them out if you want other examples. I really like the idea of these plants being magically manipulated, so to speak, by these crystals. I want to take this idea and put them on my ice board. I want to create these twisting "trees" and have them holding or attached to crystals of some kind. Moonpie and I have been brain storming. I am thinking wire frame, papier maché, foam crystal shapes on removable bases so we have some nice gaming trees.

That is the plan. We shall see how that turns out. Kind of excited.

Progress!

I have primed all of the sylvaneth models I own along with all of the chaos models that I own. While staring at the trees debating on where to start, I grabbed the free khorne slaughterpriest and began painting him. Not sure why, but I did.

I am still unsure how I want to do the hack blade and skin but I got a nice little start on him. I really like the model, especially because he was free. He is the only khorne model I have actually but he has fun rules. I am sure he will see some use. Sitting to my left right now is a box of High Elves that I finished basing the other day. I am thinking about priming them this weekend. Assuming the weather cooperates.

Any ways, have a great weekend everybody. Let me know what think about my white armored khorne guy. CC always appreciated.

I returned from Adepticon with a small collection of new things and a burning desire to build and paint. During Adepticon I did not play any official events. Instead I decided to just hang out with friends, check out the scene, demo things, and in general take care of all of my friends as they did their thing. Primarily Ramos, because he is a big baby. That being said, Ramos did have the best food suggestion of the weekend. We went to Misoya (sp?) and had AMAZING ramen. Truly, it was amazing.

At any rate, I picked up guild ball after running the demo. I got a dark elf Kahrybdis, that I have wanted ever since the model was released. It has already been clipped, cleaned, and built. I also picked up Rune Wars. THANK YOU SOLAR! I have been reading the rules. I think they have a great game on their hands. I can see this game doing well. It is xwing and armada rules using a fantasy setting. I do find it very interesting that they made the figures easy to put together without glue yet they didn't paint them.

Any ways, during Adepticon Moonpie and I played 5 rounds of Silver Tower, with various people. Thank you to everyone who played. I think we may be playing another round today. That is my hope. It was nice to see everyone enjoy the game despite some preconceived notions. We may have turned a couple Wardens to the game. Next year Moonpie has promised to have every model painted. (yes i put that in writing)

Thanks again to everyone who went. It was great to see everyone and recharge the war gaming batteries. It was also a fantastic con with lots of great vendors and tournament organizers. Everyone we spoke to, even the randoms in the elevators, were great.

Really happy you guys liked Misoya. Honestly Im glad it turned out as well as it did- I had no idea what to expect!!! xD And now we definitely know- Takoyaki and CORN CROQUETTES!!!

Silver tower was remarkably fun- Been considering picking up a copy, myself! (though noone to plaaaay with around here D: ) Tell moonpie that now I'm EXPECTING to play with beautifully painted minis next year!! ( <3 Wight King!!)

As far as lights, I have a pair of large fluorescents that light the room, then a desk lamp with a daylight bulb in it. Gets me pretty nice clean white light all around. I use a similar setup with my photos

WOW. I had an awesome game of age of sigmar today. We used all sorts of new terrain. I took a picture but it doesn't look that great. The table is black, the models are all primed black. Most of the terrain is bare. It was not an attractive game but it was a blast to play. We created a scenario. We called it "The meeting of minds" We took four different heroes, each from a different subfaction of the Order. Spirit of Durthu, High Elf Wizard, Doomseeker, and a Dark Elf Dockmaster guy. They started next to one another in the center of the battlefield. We then took every chaos model I own and put them on the field 18 inches away. In a turn one of the heroes killed an enemy model, he got to roll a d6 to see if he would summon more troops. On a roll of a 6 a unit would be summoned onto the battlefield.

I would win if I killed the four commanders. He would win if all of the chaos guys were killed.

The game was a blast. It started out very poorly for me. He killed some rats and summoned the Kharybdis right of the bat. My guys got into combat with the dwarf and the fleetmaster dark elf guy. The spirit of durthu got tied up with various things. The Kharybdis ate an entire unit of clan rats in one turn. Things were not looking good. Then, my dice rolling became awesome. My clan rats killed the dwarf. My warpthrower melted the dockmaster. My skaven warlord killed the high elf wizard in one turn of combat. I then got SUPER lucky with another round of firing and my warlord killed Durthu. When the last turn was over, all that remained on the board in the name of chaos was a warpthrower, a mortar, and my warlord. In the next round I lost all three and I was board wiped.

The game was awesome and really bloody. It was also really quick. It took under 2 hours to play the whole thing.

I know many of us are purists, and AoS got a bad press to start, but more and more people say it is a great game, you certainly sound like you enjoyed it even though you did not win. Sort out those pictures bud, to quote the great and the good, "Pics or it did not happen!"

Loving the work we have seen, dwarf is stunning. Love the look of the grave yard.

This is probably the best picture. You can see one of my blocks of skaven.

Age of Sigmar has turned out to be fast and violent. I think my biggest draw is that the rules are simple and straight forward. I don't spend 50% off the battle confirming rules.

Well, I thought I really liked how he turned out, then I looked at these pictures. Ultra close zoom really points out the flaws. I assure you, he looks great at 3 feet, lol.

In other news, my piece of terrain is currently drying with the first coat of blue. I primed some other terrain. I primed my unforged and cogsmith. I also built a little objective looking thing. Pics upcoming. I also finally sat down and uploaded some pictures from Adepticon. I know many of you already saw the knight fight but I know have an entire folder of knight on knight action. Coincidentally Solar, you are correct but I will be primarily using them for Age of Sigmar games. The back left blue haired dwarf is a doom seeker, the primed dwarf back right is an unforged, and the front brown dwarf is a cogsmith. All of them can be used in both games.

Gitsplitta, you are absolutely correct. Small steps forward is about all I can manage right now, but I have been enjoying each one of them. I really like the cogsmith thus far. I hope to get some better pictures soon.

I have scheduled another game tomorrow. This time it will be a three way game. I am super excited. All of the figures are already here. I think I will make up the armies and create a cool scenario.

In the first game, the Skaven were successful in defeating the heroes of Order but the price was the life of every skaven. What should happen next? At my disposal I have a huge chunk of high elfs, (thanks solar!) I have a small group of rats, an equal amount of Sylvaneth, and all of Moonpies Nurgle. I also have some random heroes that I have been painting. That is four armies for me to play around with. How should our story continue?

I am thinking about a much more fluffy kind of scenario, let us not worry about points and things.

Initiated brainstorm protocol DAKKATHINK! GO!

An objective marker. I slapped it together yesterday, didn't quite finish the painting part but its close. Some touch ups and the little sprite are left. Any ways, after further debate I decided that we are going to fill the board with terrain and make the objective a hidden marker. Heroes can explore the terrain pieces and see if the objective is there. Random turn length. Capture and Hold once the objective is discovered. Should be interesting with three forces.

Story will follow.

Game was a lot different then expected. At the last minute one of my buddies had to bail. The two player game was brutal. I ran with nurgle he ran high elves. The nurgle were slow and tough and fortunately for me his shooting was terrible. I snapped some pics in my battle folder. Here is a fun picture.

The cogsmith fighting back Morbidex. He did rather well and when the game stopped he was still there wacking away.

The game was a bit one sided really. He sent his silver helms and griffon right at me and slowed me down, but their sacrifice was meaningless. His archers rolled awful. AWFUL. Turn after turn the first three groups and a war machine shot at me. I managed to push forward and take out the enemies on my right flank, except for the cogsmith. On the left I took out his war machine and the last of his silver helms. By turn four, which is when we stopped, he only had the cogsmith, two smaller archer units, and a handful of reavers in close combat with nurglings and the remaining plague drone. I still had the bulk of my army.

His rolled awful with his shooting which was his only true advantage. We don't have any high elf heavy hitters so he couldn't stop my advance, because of his awful shooting. It was still fun.

Tomorrow at my FLGS an age of sigmar escalation league is starting. I am very excited to get involved. I am a little concerned about bringing my sylvaneth without any trees, but I am just hoping to meet some cool peeps and see what kind of group it is. I am hoping to get a little painting in this afternoon on one of my treelords. I am thinking of going darker then I did on my first dryad. I hadn't planned on it, but i keep referring to him as Oakley.

More WIP of Oakley. The first round of the escalation league was a ton of fun. Quite a few people didn't show up but I still managed to play a couple games while there. Both were against the new Kharadron Overlords. I won them both. Overall the guys were a blast to play with. I am hoping to have this treelord finished and some more of the dryads painted before the next get together.

It really is great.

In other news my wife requested a game for mothers day, which meant I HAD to visit a game store. I may have walked away with some new duardin. The Arkanaut Company.

I think I am going to put some arkanauts together next, but after that I think I am going to hit the Dryads with some paint. I have a pair of branch wyches that need some color. I have three weeks until the next escalation game and I think I am going to attempt to have a fully painted Sylvaneth group. It is a bit lofty of a goal but manageable if I find an easy method to paint the dryads. I think I'll have 30 in my next match.

For me it is probably that it looks slightly more natural and a bit brighter than the rest.

No. 1 is too dark, nice contrast though with the green.
No. 2 is very cool, but I like the life in the others this is dead.
No. 3 is bright and has life to it, nice colour with the yellow accent, could vary the leaf colour through the autumn range.
No. 4 is a bit artificial for me, the red bark.
No. 5 is a very close second for me, has a nice feel to it, colours are good, apart from for some reason I feel it is a little orange, as opposed to brown on the bark.

Now to be completely honest, they all look brilliant and great work all round. I am being really finicky with those comments, I think any of them would make a spectacular army.

Thanks Cam. I will continue to mess around with these paint schemes. I plan on having a nice mix of colors, as you can see, the only consistent factor will be the green runes. I think the spirit of durthu will be painted more like No. 2, with his giant sword being menacing and green. I may have to try my hand again at No 3. I can't place a finger on why I don't like him. No 1, his brown is mixed with purple. You can not really tell in the picture but it makes the leaves look very vibrant. There will be more of that for sure. No 4, in natural light, doesn't look nearly as red as the picture makes it.

More experimenting is required, and better pictures.

On a side note, this weekend has been beautiful. I will be priming some Kharadron company at some point.

PHOTO DUMP!
It happened to be a gorgeous day today so I snapped some photos. I apologize for some of the lighting issues that natural light causes but I think you may still get a good idea of what is happening with my Sylvaneth. First up, all of my recent painting projects.

Here is my Branchwych.

Lots of Dryad Pictures. Please give me feedback on these guys. Thanks!
Purple and Red

The whites.

The brown one that everyone seemed to love came out SUPER dark. You can hardly see him. I will try again here soon to have an improved picture. I also have four more dryads on deck, currently being washed. When this is all done it looks like I'll have three "squads, or units, or copse, or hedge?" Whatever, I'll have three groups based on paint scheme to work with. Current Treelord is of the brown variety. I'll paint my durthu spirit in the white scheme. I am not sure I'll end up with another treelord model, but that would cover everybody I have thus far.

Now see that group shot is excellent, all that variety and colour really works for me.

And it would depend on the formation, in line they would be a privot, but in general they would be a shrubbery surely!

In new projects, i finished the previous 4 on deck and started another 4.

Today I managed a battle of Age of Sigmar. 1700 points of Sylvaneth and Free People versus High Elves and random forces of Order. The battle scenario was called Places of Power, there were three objectives that only heroes could hold and get points on. Here is the set up.

I am at the bottom. My army consists of about 1250 of Sylvaneth and then a unit of Free People crossbowmen, hand gunners, and a cannon. The other side of the table is a whole bunch of high elves, a doom seeker, a cogsmith, a unit of arkunaut company, and a Khrybdiss. The objectives are in the very center of the board, the building on the left and in the graveyard on the right. He gets turn one. He has mediocre results but did manage to charge his griffon directly at my Spirit of Durthu. He does two wounds to me. I kill him outright.

These pictures give you an idea of the carnage that proceeded the opening salvo. The Spirit of Durthu was amazing as was the cheap Empire crossbowmen. My cannon shot twice every turn and only hit on the last turn in which it killed out right the high elf repeater bolt thrower. On his side of things his Reavers killed one of my branchwyches on the first turn. They then proceeded to harass my flank until my treelord caught up to them. His swordmasters were chewed up on their march across the board but died under a hail of crossbow bolts. My dryads proved to be surprisingly resilient this game, they usually aren't. When turn 5 rolled around he only had his cogsmith, everything else was dead. I killed the smith in turn 5. The interesting thing was that he managed more victory points then I. It ended 10 to 9. He did not have a single model on the board but from what we determined, he won the battle. His cogsmith sat on the objective the whole game and was raking in points while I could do nothing until I got through his screen.

Overall the game was a blast. He did get a little frustrated with some of his rolls near the end as it seemed once he started to loose a grip on the battlefield his rolls seemed to worsen. I think next time he will be a little smarter with his griffon, if he brings him at all. The griffon has a very poor track record in my house for some reason. Part of my goal today was to try out two free people units, the gunner and crossbowmen. They are the same points, they share similar rules. I can't explain why, but the crossbowmen appeared to be leagues better. Could have just been the situation but had you looked at the set up you would have thought it the other way around.

Any ways, enough blabbering. Have a great night guys. Thanks for the comments. I hope you like my small break down of our game. I can not wait to have another one to share.

Oh, one last thing. I ordered some Sylvaneth trees. It is really silly to play a Sylvaneth army without them, FYI.

This is out of character for me... but I don't see how an army that has been wiped out... can in any way win the battle. Victory points or no.... you've been slaughtered. One guy left? Fine, you're in. But no guys left?? Nope... you're toast.

Agreed, my understanding is: If you are not able to finish out the game then it becomes a forfeit/concede

That is my understanding however.

Im glad you guys liked the report. I did not intend to start a debate on winning conditions. After seeing the pictures again, i have decided that i need to make those unpainted terrain pieces a priority. I have been very pleased with my board over the years and after the trees arrive and the buildings are painted I'm not sure what else my boards would need.

Thoughts?

Wow Ice, now there's frozen trees to marvel at too? I don't know if you're still looking for input, but I myself love the 'dead-tree' looking one from the group of five, thats a direction I haven't really seen with these new models, plus, as in your group shot of the white ones, you can add the start of new life. I think they fit your style the most, personally

You are lucky that in this ruleset that the cannon can't just blow up. In my 8th games, all the cannons blew up always. Dang misfires!

Moonpie, i think when the league gets to 2000 points. I'll be bringing an engineer and more cannons to reroll my misses for all nearby cannons. Do you have 4?

I'd say either keep em green, if the power itself is green and flowing through them. Or if you want a stark contrast, red eyes and mouths. But then they may be called the Christmas Tree Army, so there is that.

Im not sure how it is in the fluff, but he has such a striking scheme compared to the others I would almost go with a contrasting color to the others. Like maybe even so far as a red or an orange. Make him stand out as his presence looks so unnatural on the field next to the more "living" trees.

I will have some other white dryads, enough to have a unit. Let me take another picture for you and I'll show you his friends.

In other random news, here is my 1500 point sylvaneth army.

400 - Spirit of Durthu w/Oaken Armor
260 - Treelord
100 - Branchwych w/ Verdant Blessing
120 - Dryads x10
240 - Dryads x20
200 - Free People Crossbowmen x20
180 - Cannon

When we get to the 2000 point range, as of right now I will be adding two more cannons for 360, a cogsmith for 100, and a fleetmaster for 40. Mainly because I don't have anything else that costs 40. That will give me a nice three cannon firing base that can reroll misses if they all stay within an inch from the cogsmith. I'll have the sylvaneth to be my advancing force and the crossbowmen to be a blob in front of the cannons. The Fleetmaster will be there, doing something. At the time I get my hands on some Kurnoth Hunters, they will replace a cannon.

Thanks Camkierhi, I am glad you like them. I have no idea how they will stack up either but from what I've seen I may have a chance at best painted, lol. I may try to get some in action shots and zoomed in a little more so you can see them even better.

I'm glad you asked Cam. It was awesome. We had a blast and for once, in a very long time, it made me want to play more. Outside of special occasions such as Adepticon we just dont play. 7th was too tedious and i was very pleased with how quickly we stopped referencing the rulebook. We had to look up the nee stats but otherwise game play was quick and dirty.

Here are some pics as proof.

50 power points. Orks vs Nids
Set up
Biovore overlooking the stormboyz.

Spore mine and trygon about to feast on my battlewagon

Warriors overseeing their minions.

I greatly under estimated the trygon. That thing is awesome. He underestimated the burnas, which killed his broodlord in closecombat. We got through 3 full turns before we ran out of time. I was dominating in points but one more turn would have destroyed two of my remaining 3 units.

I cant wait for our next game.

Glad your back playing.. 1000 pts is usually a good starting game but most players are doing 2000 pts in order to counter the wide variety of builds. Still even at 1000 pts you can put together a cheesey list.

Moonpie and I just had another game of 8th. He tried out his Harlequins for the first time. It was a 65 power level game. I brought orks. Lots of boys and killa kans. I killed everything he had except two leaders by turn two. He charged right at me and my sheer weight of attacks and fire power killed him. A 20 man boy squad with shootas killed his solitaire in overwatch. My killa kans with Skorchas took out nearly an entire troop in one shooting phase. He was not to pleased with the results but he did not play to their strengths. A learning experience for both of us. Skorchas and mobs of boys for the win.

Its quicker to build an army using power levels and my orks arent really over equipped. I didnt bring any nobz or vehicles so i didnt have any ways to really abuse the system. Im not sure about his harlequins.

The harlequins definitely had some equipment. I am going to have to figure out how to use them. Ideally they would be charging from behind some cover blocking LoS. I don't know if you have to have LoS to charge. Or I need to lead with vehicles. Or just play Craftworld... interested or Ynarri...less interested.

If they come out with plastic Aspect Warriors I am sold.

I had a great game last Sunday. I didn't pull out the victory mainly because I didn't have enough units to hold four objectives. I also still need those trees. COME ON WHALE!

Here was the first turn after he had gone, he had a lucky charge over on in the right corner. Barkley never moved the entire game.

Barkley fighting with several units of Stormcast before being taken out. He held his own for several turns.

My crossbowmen and cannon put in some SERIOUS work. The cannon didn't hit often but when it did, things perished. The crossbowmen took out nearly 3 times their points cost and were one of the only units left in my army at game end.

The real MVP of the game was Oakley, my spirit of Durthu.

He was not as effective in close combat as he should have been but his ranged verdant blast was awesome. He took out two characters and a unit. He almost took out a third character before he was slain.

Yes Solar, I am in a casual escalation league. We get together once a month.

I have been working on some random hobby projects as of late. I based all of Moonpies nurgle. I have built my high elf chariot. A forest arrived here the other day, so I have been working on that mess. A unit of Kurnoth Hunters have also arrived. On my desk in front of me I have six dryads and one wych left to paint. The Dryads themselves are completed, there are just random little things left around them, like Owls and rocks on their bases etc. I think the hobby project that is on top of my list is my Ice Angel Fluff. I keep coming back to it in my head. It is so close to be completed, I feel obligated to finish it. I MUST FINISH IT. I feel Knightley silently demanding me to finish it.

I would love to finish it and then figure out a good way to get some Ice Angel Primaris marines into book three. That'd be easy enough. If I didn't have kids and a job and everything else going on in my life. Any ways, back to it. I should be tackling these projects and not wasting time talking to you guys. LOL.

I am having a bit of trouble finding the right mind set to get started. I know what to write, it is all in my head, but every instance in which I attempt to write, I convince myself to do something else instead. I can not figure out why.

One such thing I have been working on instead is a bunch of trees and those Kurnoth Hunters. I have really enjoyed both kits. I went the bow route because I need some more fire power. You can not really have enough.

Next tough question, which color scheme do I use on the trees? White trunks with purple leaves? Brown trees with purple or green leaves? Dark brownish purple trunk with green leaves? Or something totally random and nothing like those? What are you thoughts?

In other news, GenCon 50 is nearly upon us. I have a full schedule. I took an entire week off to enjoy the con and then a few days to recuperate. If any of you guys are on twitter, look me up. It is as lot easier to post there what I am up to so check me out @ulasht Something tells me I will walk away with some amazing loot this year, mainly because I do every year.

One last thing, any one else super excited about Necromunda? I am super excited, not quite moonpie level excited, but excited.

Man I absolutely love the white and purple leaf Sylvaneth absolutely kickass scheme. That's my vote for the trees.

If you want to tie stuff together, you could do that as the majority scheme with one tree out of every three as brown trunk with purple leaves.

Perhaps throw in the odd electric blue leaf as you're going along.

Oh, and Necromunda looks stone-cold awesome

Thanks man! The trees have been primed so you may see some paint on them very soon. I have also been busy building other things, I picked up a few more things from my birthday the other day. Here is one of them.

This guy! Brokk Grungsson. It is such a cool model. I was also given the warhammer age of sigmar box set so I have a small khorne and stormcast force. Those have also been built.

While on vacation at GenCon I also picked up a couple games and some other models.

Here are some of the games from GenCon.

One of the games I am most excited about is called Deep Madness. I won some nice resin models after successfully winning a demo with some random other people. Warsenal was there as well and I picked up some neat pieces of terrain. In anticipation of Necromunda I bought a dumpster and some barrels and random little bits. My hobby back log is now overflowing. Time to get crackin. I should have the AOS generals handbook at the end of the week and then I'll be reworking my army. Any one have any favorites stormcast paint jobs? I am going to stay away from the over used gold and silver garbage. Post some favorites to give me some ideas. Thanks!

They certainly do look good in black but I do not want to paint another black army. The green guys aren't bad. The teal, or sea foam, or whatever that other color is, isn't bad either. I think I need to keep exploring.

I love the stonecast guys that are here on dakka. They may be my current favorites but I do not think i could pull that off nearly as well as he can. I must keep looking.

In a small side note, did I tell you guys I got a new hot blade for cutting foam? Its great. Way better then the stupid hot wire tool I bought all those years ago. It worked, but it was super slow and tedious. The new knife, much better and WAY faster. It also gets much much much hotter then the wire. I may attempt to make a frozen waterfall to have a new starting point of my ice river. Thoughts?

Post by: Gitsplitta

Well, you have brown areas, and blue-green areas with no cross-over elements, just areas dominated by one or the other. It looks odd to me. The two colors have no relationship... not even a logical one. Hammer, sword, shield, helm... it's not a natural grouping. I'd either bring in some brown elements on the blue pieces and visa-versa... or make the helm (and possibly the bulk of the shield minus the picture of the hammer on it) brown to match the rest of the "armor" elements.

I guess the arrangement of colors doesn't seem to make any sense to me... that's the crux of it.

I need to really set up a nice light box for some photos. I have completed a stormcast big hammer guy and am pretty close to finishing up my stormcast commander. Moon_pie came over and nearly completed the small sigmar temple in one go. It only needs some fine details to be called finished. I apparently need to invite him over for movies and painting more often.

Any ways, I am out for a few days. I hope every has safe travels and Happy Thanksgiving to those that celebrate it.

Thanks Git!

We are having a beautiful day here today so I grabbed a quick shot of my stormcast.

It is a phone pic so not the greatest quality but I think you can get a better idea of where I am going with these guys. I did to back and try to tie in the shield to the rest of the model and I added in a little more tangerine to compliment the turquoise and tan. The triple T color scheme is what I decided to go with. The drake stormcast guy is not far off from being completed. I need to dirty him up and of course do the base.
