Oooh, a bump, Reposting the last update for the page flip. Have a seat stick around, more to come
Holy crap I got a lot done, woot. I'm really pleased with the mediplex, I found a couple of things out that should make future buildings even better too. I really should have gone over the mediplex more carefully with the cotton swabs, there were pools of dip in some recesses that finally decided to run after the fact, I caught a few but others made messes that were too set to easily fix. They're on the inside mostly, at least. I know to watch out for this and to pre-siphon all of the recesses for future buildings. I should be able to cover up these messes with other forms of weathering. The other thing I determined was a good way to handle the building without touching anything getting dipped. I'll just show you tomorrow when I take pictures of the building and dumpsters after the dip has cured.
I think between tonight and tomorrow nap/night, I might just be able to have finished three buildings and two bits of scatter. Gonna upload pictures on the laptop, so expect those soonish.
Ok, here's a photo dump for you, but the best is yet to come.
Some poor souls are going to have to do without dollar store pill organizers, I saw this and immediately thought 28mm dumpsters!
Seems like a pretty good size to me, big enough you could stuff a guardsman or corporation marine into each section. If you were a jerk That brush-on glue sounded pretty handy so I grabbed a bottle of it while I was out and about.
Front of the industrial building, will have to come up with a name, or at least a better idea of it's function. Thoughts?
Front of the mediplex/center/whatever. I like the brightness of the building in contrast with how dark everything else has been coming out. Though, now that there's dip on it... it's definitely not that bright anymore, and just as dingy as the rest of it.
What the hell, I decided to checker the roof (and ceiling). It's a bit... Alice in Wonderland or something... for me, but... definitely more interesting than it was before. What purpose shall this building serve? I was thinking of something industrial like maybe a machine shop or something. Thoughts?
Still happy with how the mediplex looks, I like the contrast of the red and silver grates with the white.
Duplicated the exterior details on the interior. For both buildings I spent less time on the interior, I just sprayed semi-carefully instead of masking at all. Still looks alright, IMO, and It won't be seen as regularly.
So what should be going on in this building once I get around to working out interior details for the structures? Looks like my camera lens may still have that smudge on it...
Ahh, my first deadzone structure. Watchtower, I guess. Just had to spray the black and fill in the metal for this one. Still need to edge highlight the black sections.
That soldier better hope that the plague dog can't climb!
Dumpsters! A bit colorful, but my board is going to be pretty dreary without some spot color now and then. I figure the blue is waste, green is recycle, and orange is hazardous waste.
These are empty, but I may make something to put inside of them eventually.
CRAP! I spoke too soon, hope that Ranger is a quick shot!
Yay undercoat!
Everything is pretty snug so I don't have to glue any of the pieces together, yay modular stuff! Just need another conduit box thing. Might paint these later tonight.
Ok, out of pictures. I've got more stuff to photograph, but it's all drying and such. Feel like I got quite a bit done, especially compared to things lately. Thoughts, comments?
Hopefully will put up a bit more later, but I may get tired and crash.
Thanks It's funny I'm starting to blossom/butterfly at junk terrain after I spent however many hundred dollars on battlezone terrain If I get half a moment before/after the barbecue today I'll be sealing the mediplex and dumpsters, which are halfway done with rust.
Absolutely ingenious use of random stuff to make some great terrain, really shows what a little effort and creative thinking can do. Nice work on the battlezone stuff too (although I reckon the medicentre needs some interior furniture/props. Any ideas/plans?)
Battle systems has a batch of medical dressing I think I'll use. If I come up with anything else while I'm tinkering though... gonna get stuff figured out and just take pictures for fun, maybe with captions. So dressing and props make sense. Need to do some counters and desks etc.

Oh yeah, forgot you had Battle Systems stuff on the way. Should liven things up and add a lot of character/detail. Caption shots should be fun...
Sheesh you guys are making me blush (underneath my terrible winter beard which does not look good and needs to be shaved right to death...)!
I liked the dog in the dumpster but if I open them too much the paint is going to peel, I should have gone over the entire surface with really fine sand paper. I'm noticing that a lot of found items don't take paint really well. The storage tank is still pretty easy to chip/peel the paint off of, and it's had polywhatever AND a flat coat.
What I would really like to do is do some narrative "battle reports" or possibly even a pseudo web comic. If I thought I could make it funny and or interesting often enough :p I'm not much of a writer but I should be able to come up with one liners every so often...
Man... just think of how much battlezones I'd have done already if I'd gotten them not two months late... Oh well, maybe I'll give them a hard time about it at their gencon booth
The dip is minwax poly shades, it has the poly in it. Forget if its polyeurethane or polyethelene or whatever, but that in and of itself is really hard. Then they get top coated to. It's just that some of the items are really smooth and even the undercoat of spray paint doesn't stick very well. So if the smooth soft plastic of the coffee can bends and the paint pops off, it won't matter how tough the outer layers are. Just need to rough things like that up just a wee tiny bit moving forward.
Yeah, it's something I'm gonna have to be proactive about. I'm hoping really fine grit sand paper will do the trick. I don't want the surface to be especially rough, but gotta scratch it a little or the paint will just peel off somewhere down the road.
May not get those two buildings done today. The girls are napping but I've not got nearly the energy that I had yesterday, and Starbound is distracting me a bit.
Wow, you've been busy. I really like how your terrain is coming out. It's making me want to actually paint mine. And buy more. I really like the industrial building.
The pill container dumpsters though are just plain genius! I need to steal that idea.
Thanks Sometimes I see something like that and the idea is immediate, like the item was made for it. Sometimes it takes a little more work like the big storage tank.
Thanks for popping by everyone, the comments, criticisms, suggestions, and all are rather useful and I appreciate them all If I wasn't posting on Dakka with the level of feedback I'm getting, I'd never turn over projects at the rate I have been. So thanks for hanging around folks
If you are going to do a lot of "reclaimed" terrain you may want to investigate a plaspak, which is a primer designed to assist the hard to adhere to plastics to hold paint. I used to use it in my trade many moons ago when we had to paint prototypes to look all pretty.
You'll probably see this in the Mantic thread, but thought I'd post it here since your Deadzone terrain is awesome too. Anarchy is releasing a Mantic Deadzone Stencil set that you might find useful for adding some more themed detail to your stuff. I'm pretty sure i'll pick it up, and think I have a discount code form backing the kickstarter.
Shame you're having trouble with peeling, but yeah seems liek you're on a winner for correcting it for future items with the sanding. Surprising though that a gloss and a matte coat are having difficulty holding it down, but I haven't experimented anywhere near as much as you.
Well so far it's just a couple of pieces, that coffee can for the storage tank and the dumpsters really. None of the deadzone stuff. Well... just spraying a fine layer of airbrush paint for a basecoat will come off pretty easy, but a nice coat of Krylon THEN airbrush paint works fine. On the battlezone stuff. The tank and dumpsters I think were just too smooth, maybe needed washed or something. It's not peeling yet, I could just see it not holding up.
Thanks for the link. I'm a bit afraid of the cost to ship those. Plus they don't look very big for 9 pounds. Or was it euros? Even then 12-15 or better monies the items shown seem kind of limited. You backed the kickstarter, thoughts? I guess it also said they gave you an A4 sheet full of them so that's probably more than is shown..
Might have to stick to tape though, kind of had a frozen hobby budget after summer of kickstarters 2013, and then i spent nearly $100 buying minis for dioramas as gifts
BTW Grim I love how you have spent a metric fethton on Deadzone terrain but are spending more time painting pill boxes and coffee cans than the terrain you shelled out for.
Damn! 2 pages!
The 2 buildings look great, but I really want to see a yellow/mustard coloured building without the black, and just weathered with the Minwax to really darken and stain the yellow. Likewise, I'd love to see a medical facility in the pale green/turquoise colours. The white with red seems... very aggressive, or militaristic. Perhaps a control room for the Corporation. I'm certainly getting ideas to nick from you when my stuff eventually arrives, I don't have any AW stuff coming, though - so I'll have to make do with other stuff. Probably found objects, bits of resin that I have sitting around here and some of the Tablescapes cardstock stuff.
For plastic adhesion, I found that Mr Surfacer sticks to that kind of plastic really well:
It comes in various "grits", but it's brilliant stuff. I've also heard that a particular type of spray paint - Krylon Camo - has extra stuff in it to help it bond effectively to plastic, which could be a readily available source of undercoat spray for that kind of thing.
As for metallics, it's a yes and no thing, in my opinion. It's not especially realistic that everything in the far-flung future would be made of metal - especially buildings and armour plate, yet we still give things like Space Marine Armour, Dreadnoughts and so forth chipped paint with "metal" armour underneath - mostly because it gives a good/effective visual shorthand. With stuff like bins/dumpsters you can again go both ways. I encounter both plastic and metal-lidded dumpsters in my travels, so you could go with either in the DeadZone future as well.
Pipes and such are looking good. I need to do some similar, but I think I'll wait a few months for the stuff that will go with them to finally show up...
@Carlos the irony is not lost on me I do fully intend to paint more deadzone scenery. The mediplex is 'done' save for blood splatter and signs, trying to decide how I want to do both. The watchtower is almost as far along, and the bumblebee building is only a step behind that.
@Azazelx Well, this is a colony, and the red/white are my corporation's military colors, I kind of figured the 'classic' white/red would work. I don't really want anything to look caring or comforting, the Warpathverse isn't a nice place I'll consider it though, I've been curious to work with such colors lately.
If you want stained yellow, you probably like my forge fathers? Keep an eye out then.
I don't have any AW coming either, almost added it to the second survey but opted for lots of hard plastic and many striders instead. Battle systems will come with a ridiculous amount of screens, displays, tables, chairs, possibly even counter tops (like a bar) and additional scatter terrain. It's been pushed back closer to the 2nd DZ shipment, but it'll come and be a stronger product for the waiting (hint hint mantic..). So between that and whatever I can come up with on my own, these building should get shinier and better detailed over time. Really looking forward to seeing what you come up with
Hmm I wonder if the Krylon camo is just happening to be from the plastic bond (forget the exact name) type of paint they make. I may have to look into some for priming found stuff, just in case. Good call
I'm in agreement about the rust showing through everywhere. I think it would look good, but it won't make a lot of sense. I'll probably leave the DZ panels fairly rustless, just around the bolts and additions. Full scratchbuilt junk terrain though.... rust away!
It's nice having the DZ terrain around to match things up with, for sure.
So as I alluded to, I've gone a bit off my proscribed path over the weekend. I'll elaborate more when there are pictures.
Anything you make Kustom is something unique that no one else has, that you've poured genius and heart into, and therefore trumps anything shiny and masss produced.
Hey guys, been a bit since I've done an update, so here we go. Got a hobby lobby in town. Woot! It's been fairly packed and probably will be for awhile, but I can still get hobby stuff locally now so that's excellent. I went today and picked up just a few things, one of which bears mention here (others were just some brushes, and some jersey cloth to practice aibrushing t-shirts ). I saw this thing a couple of weeks ago when at a hobby lobby out of town, passed, but wondered. Here are some pictures, form a decision on the value before reading further, if you like:
So yeah, that thing cost me six bucks. Tag was $9.99, eligible for the standard hobby lobby 40% off weekly coupon (by which I mean they seem to give me 40% off one item any time I bother to have my cellphone with me...). I'm not sure if it directly represents a particular warhammer tank especially well, but it's reasonably close to the right size for 28mm models. It doesn't look particularly high-tech, but then neither do most 40k tanks. I think if you wanted to take it seriously, you'd need to hot/super glue some of the connections, do a bit of gap filling and finishing... but for six bucks.... sheesh. I may paint this up in corporation colors to match my marines. The warpath kickstarter will probably see them getting reinforced with loads of slick scifi tanks... but I can always add rust and do a little creative battle damage to convert it into scenery after the fact.
Ok, next up is some deadzone terrain I've been working on and finalizing. Everything is still liable to get signs and labels, but I'm planning to design my own Warpath/Infinity high-tech/future sets rather than sticking to the standard yellow warning signs and the like. Everything should be table ready finished, though I reserve the right to add further detail to everything later on
First up we have what I'm calling Tower Five:
Possibly my favorite angle (boom phrasing!). This is more or less a watchtower with some barricades meant to serve as a checkpoint for foot traffic and light vehicles. I may work out a hazard striped broken toll gate kind of thing some time. I'll also work out some free standing toll/no trespassing/etc signs to put in the long section between the barricades.
I think I mentioned getting some stencils... right? The door missed getting dipped, I'll fix that the next time I get out the can.
Obligatory action shots.
Thoughts?
I'll be back with some more miscellaneous pieces soon.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Alrighty, here are a few more:
Looks like one or more folk reading the warning were added to the body count...
Added some blood.
I don't think any of the previous shots showed off this little first aid kit, cut it from one of those sheets of labels and such.
One of the dumpsters got some gore as well.
Looks like someone tried to retreat up the ladder but didn't get very far..
But someone did live long enough to make a mess up here..
Still need to finish the door for this one, added a little blood out front, guess they didn't make it in..
What in the hell happened in this place?
Ok, think I'm tapped out for pictures. Comments and criticism?
Nice stuff, the scenery looks cool as ever. That tank can't be bad for the price, even if you just use is a wreck for more cover in DZ I doubt you'd find a much cheaper option, and it looks 'clean' enough to fit in with the Corp stylistically.
Thanks guys, I think I'm getting reasonably close to a modestly laid out deadzone board load of painted terrain. I'm gonna do some gluing to make the tank sturdier, then look into scifiwargamifying the main cannon and secondary gun a bit. I'll probably leave it intact and paint it, but still use it as just a piece of terrain since nothing I'm liable to play uses tanks (or if I play 40k I'd be best off using the official profiles to be fair). Once I get honest to goodness corporation tanks... it will probably get junked, and be all the cooler for it
The tank is so potentially cheap (only had two and it requires a coupon) I could see nabbing many for me kind of project. Tank scrap yard ,maybe? Deadzone building with a large crane magnet and so on? Maaaaybe.
Join us....Join uuu'uuusssssss. I like how they give my models a solid 'wherever you go, there you are'. I hear they don't do so well for tournament paint comps but that has no bearing on me.
The little one is interfering, but I'm trying to get my 'secret project' dipped so I can seal and display it by tomorrow or early weekend on the outside. Then you guys can tell me if I'm crazy.
Just wait till I've got my hands on some Mars Attacks civilians, oddly bemused grandma, poor kid, some guy, and a couple of chesty vixens being chased around by murderous plague!
Used to be the stockator was only 60 points, i think they're 75 now. Wonder how you would model sponsons on that tank, a couple of marines sitting on the sides with the heavies in hand? I did put them side by side, the Shade is around 20-30% longer or so, with a similar width, the predator is a bit taller overall and the turret on the Shade is again a bit bigger. Maybe 20% or so?
Supposedly there are three tanks, but the other two looked a lot more WW2ish. They were kind of off to the side of the other scale model stuff at the end of the aisle, near by some other snap fit stuff like X-wings, and some enterprise kits.
The last photos of your terrain look fantastic, I really love the narrative that plays out. I love my games to develop some form of story all of their own and your terrain setup would help that immensely. The growing wariness of the troops as they investigate where everyone went and the suspense as they find more and more evidence of conflict.....
I'm really looking forward to expanding the terrain collection and getting more pictures like those. I need some set dressing too. Tables, chairs, shelves for the walls, counters and so on. Battle systems will help but I'll do some on my own as well.
I rather like the first gen rampaging outside the window in that last shot.
The tank is so potentially cheap (only had two and it requires a coupon) I could see nabbing many for me kind of project. Tank scrap yard ,maybe? Deadzone building with a large crane magnet and so on? Maaaaybe.
You know, if I had access to $6 tanks like that (and my DeadZone/MA buildings), I'd probably build one myself.
The red and white of the Med centre and our corp troops is actually one of the reasons I thought it would go well as a command centre. Your forgefather look is pretty much exactly how I'd like to see one of those buildings done as well. The perfect aged, oily workshop look. Tower 5 looks great as well.
Can I hassle you? I['d like to see what your results look like from doing this with some of your scenery:
Tank Graveyard. 2x2 board... maybe 9 tanks in 3x3 formation. Enforcers vs Plague Hide and Seek of Death...
DO IT!
(actually, I might try something like this myself. A Deadzone setup with very little height but a ton of cover and LOS blockers, almost like a grid. Stay in the open too long or make a wrong move and you get eaten/blasted. Sounds fun.)
@Azazelx, I'm terribly interested in your tank graveyard, watching your blog for updates like a starving hawk I'm starting to agree with you about the mediplex being better cast as a Corporation marine HQ. Considering that pretty hard going forward, though I kind of wish I had included some black in that case. Though I guess black is for armor and the building is pretty basic.
I'll give that salt weathering video a look, and if it doesn't disagree with me, I'll give it a try. I've kind of wanted to for a while now anyway.
Nobody gonna put the breaks on my dwarf-bound crazy train?
Thoughts on the tank? Once I come up with a proper clan/faction name for them and do some sketching/planning I intend to personalize the tank a bit. If I can manage it... I want to duplicate the dwarf face masks that some of the FF leaders and the Iron ancestor have:
Kind of like those but a bit more... i dunno... dwarf face. Basically I want to put a dwarf face on the front of the tanks. Standard set-teeth grimace, though a vindicator might have parted teeth with the cannon sticking out But, I'll have to do some planning and tinkering first.
The tank also needs some rust, weathering on the tracks, and so on... but this gives you the idea and would be enough to start with on the table. I have enough plastic bodies that, when combined with restic and metal specialists, I can do 4 teams of 10 with a special and heavy weapon so as to fully represent a unit of tactical marines.
Thought about doing this with the enforcers but I kind of want to take my time working on those, and most of my dwarfs are hard plastic and they paint super fast, giving me an army more quickly.
I've also finished another building, aside from blood and posters and such. I'll try to get a shot or two of it this morning but there may be delays. I tried something a little different with the dipping and I think the results are possibly better. I'll need your thoughts on it. Basically Instead of blasting every surface with a ton of dip with the sponge brush, then brushing it off and disposing of the extra and so on... I squeegeed most of the dip off of the brush after dipping it in the miniwax, so the application was almost more of a drybrush with the dip rather than a dunk/wash.
I think I counted two spots that ran at all, compared to many, and it still has that grimy feel to it. I think it's got some more streaks than the others since there was less dip to flow out and mitigate them... but it's a lot cleaner of a dirty look.... if that makes sense
Try to pop back with a picture or two here in a minute.
The Limited-edition WFB Dwarf Army Standard bearer would have been perfect, but was released 14 years ago so naturally it's not exactly available or cheap to come by. (even at the time).

Well, black is also piss-easy to add on later. Just don't overdo it or it will mess up the nice aggro feel of the room.

I theoretically know how to do it, but my one attempt failed miserably (small panels on a Dreadnought's legs). I think a bunch of scenery-tank will learn me much more gooder. I'm also going to watch a ton more video tutorials on it to pick up the little nuances and differences on how people do it before my tanks turn up.
Nobody gonna put the breaks on my dwarf-bound crazy train? Thoughts on the tank?

Clearly not. My suggestion was going to be to darken the chassis around the tracks, but I see you've got that planned anyway. If you really wanted to go to crazytown, you could get a Whirlwind/razorback hatch-plate, cut one of those quad-autocannon forgefather not-dreadnoughts in half and use it as a fancy-future flak turret. Which would be awesome.
Nice find at Hobby Lobby, that tank is basically a M-48 with a fancy paint job.
I wonder what you plan to copy?
The buildings look weathered and gritty, like a well established colony ought to, too new and they would look like they got there a mere few years or months ago.
I do like the blood spatter on the Public Safety Notice. Nice touch.
Hmm... Dwarf faces on tanks? I think cause of the style it'd be pretty easy for you to pull off, since they like to use lots of geometric shapes. You could get a bunch of shapes and literally 'build' a design onto the front of the tank. I'll have to look at more dwarven iconography.
@shas, thanks. I picked up a second tank today and may start working on them soon, they make pretty good LoS blocking bits. I might not copy anything, I think it's copyright infringement
@CC Whoever created it had just a little bit on there but it was too bright and too minimal to get my point across I think the dwarf faces should be fairly simple too, I just need to do some sketching and some testing. Need to look around and see if anyone else has done something similar with their orks or fantasy dwarfs that I could borrow from. But that's what I'm planning, either strips of card, or some other shapes. Just something that gets the idea across y'know.
@Azazelx; Hey now, isn't it technically breaking some kind of copyright laws to use instant mold to make forms of anything you didn't make yourself (and that's actually copyrighted, probably ok for simple geometric shapes and such)? I'd seriously consider using it as such but it always seemed a bit dodgy, as they say.
I do have some, but I rarely make something unique of my own to copy.
Thanks for the inspiration on the Dwarf faces in any case though, it may be harder to do by scratch than I'm thinking. The general idea is something more along the lines of this: A big face on the front of the vehicle, but dwarf, possibly made out of scrap iron repurposed. Almost Orky, but a little cleaner. My dwarfs are pretty poor so they do a lot of salvage reclamation and so on.
As to the Iron Ancestor as a super dwarfy turret... I've had the idea before, just not quite in that direction:
I'm seriously considering cleaning up my dreads and adding them to the list of marine stuff I need to clear out, to be replaced by Iron Ancestors instead. Not sure you can get $20 for plastic AOBR dreads these days, but if I could (or even get close) that's easily a direct trade to Iron ancestors. Maybe not with the doomstorm upgrade kit though (lets you make them Mortis/rifleman dreads). If I really do get a bunch of my dwarfs painted and marine vehicles to go with them... I may spring for a trio of Jotum cannons, all three of them weigh in cheaper (and possibly lighter than!) a space marine Thunderfire cannon, and it may be possible to use them for other things as well... like super-cannons for certain land raider variants. Or emplacement cannoni.
I wonder if anyone would be sore if Instead of using the proper sponsons for a predator (who uses sponsons any more these days...), I had a couple of dwarfs leaning out on the side ramp things toting heavies. I guess to be in the spirit of things I could convert them to have heavy bolters too...
I got another Shade today, the only one they had left but a dude was stocking that aisle so we'll check again soon (not tomorrow though, curse the churchly nature of hobby lobby!). The coupon is viable 1/day/customer, so I should be able to use it all I like to obtain cheapo tanks. Feel a bit bad though, starting at $10 even coming from china with lead paint they probably aren't getting too terribly much of a margin from them. Maybe I'll buy some candles sometime to make up for it, you get like 90% profit on those sometimes...
Oooh, one last thing, need to get these out before I forget. Been thinking of some more billboards/adwalls (I'll explain those one I make one )

From what I understand? No. You're not breaking any sort of law unless you're copying something with the intent to distribute or make money off of it.
But I'm not a lawyer, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Preferrably that cool lava-salt that's all black and charcoal like. Its great on potatoes.
Really, I think for the most part buying one of something and then making a ton of copies from press molds is like a grey area of the hobby. I prefer to make stuff myself, or give money to the talented people who make stuff I think is cool. But then there's things like Space Marine Legs, which you never have enough of despite having a trillion of everything else. Soooo... whatever. We've all thought about it.
Enjoy the hobbying! I'd be doing the same, but I have to work today and then I'm running a WoD game and cooking dinner. Busy Saturday.
For personal use is usually okay, but selling copies, well I have seen cheaper knock offs from china at a place called Yoymart. they even perfectly copy the Finecrapst mistakes, LOL
For the dwarf faces, how about getting some thin plasticard and making something similar to the front of the Iron Ancestor by layering it a couple of times over a base plate that fits on a Rhino front, and casting that? Am I making sense?
I like the poster ideas, I'm in the process of planning some similar stuff myself.
Here's a few ideas:
'The Z-corps: A Once-In-A-Lifetime Opportunity'
One stolen from Red Dwarf: 'The Marines: While you sleep, we're probably saving the universe!' *appropriately awesome pic of Corp Marines and Explosions*
@Paradigm, you are making sense, and this is what I'm thinking. Maybe cast it, maybe don't depending on the complexity.
I like your poster ideas, may have to steal
@CC sounds busy, but at least there's a game involved, and dinner is often required to function
@shas, yeah i kind of figure it works that way... kind of like burning copies of cds you bought on itunes, or making car copies of your disks so when they inevitably ruin, it was just the copy.
Thinking about the plasticard idea, it might not need casting. With a sharp knife and a rule, you should be able to throw something together in about 10 minutes, and it wouldn't be worth the effort to cast it. You've also got me thinking about doing something similar for my Rhinos, chapter icons and the like...
Bwahaha, the hobby is like a fire and good ideas are it's fuel! Gotta find some good inspiration for my dwarf faces, and making each one would allow them to be unique as well so there's that.
Mine is shaping up to be a bit more 2d, I think I'll use the windshields of the rhino for eyes, with plated beard below them, and possibly a hat or other top extending slightly above them. Pictures later, still fairly rough atm.
Hmm... I may have determined a purpose for the existence of a couple of my smaller structures... Japanese style vending machines kind of. But with more stock. Not just soup or soda or toys or... other things... but daily goods. And private, so nobody can jank your cred number/ID/etc. So half of the little 3" cube building would be dominated by a kiosk, something I'll have to design to look like a japanese vending machine, or one of those nifty new best buy vending machine things...
Like this, but with even cooler/scifi-ier gadgets. Just a bit of everything even. Ooooh, because it's the future... it could have a handy 3d printer port on one side, so you're really just calling up a list of templates. Wonderful, glad I decided to type this out. I'll probably develop an image so I can save it and print out copies
Dwarf Tank Beard 1.0 nearly complete.

I think I've also determined that it's almost as cost effective to order the forge father things that I'd like direct from Mantic, than from a 3rd party retail. Not to mention the sweet mantic cases I'd get with a direct order. AND the mantic points... not to mention direct support. The Jotumm cannon thing 3 pack is $40, but nobody else sells that, discounted rates would probably put you closer to 45 from a quick scan. The Iron Ancestors are 20 and 25 for doomstorm (and since it doubles up nicely for a rifleman, and it's an upgrade bit not a replacement... worth the $5). I can get IA for 15-16 and doomstorms for a little less than $20 but once you figure up shipping... Again not to mention the cases and points.
Still, that's a ways off. I've got future kickstarters and GenCon willy-nilly spendings to feed before that can happen.
Ok, tankbeard 1.0 complete I'll take pictures if I get the chance.
Not sure. I don't think so, though. I first learned about (and how to) press mould from an article in White Dwarf where they showed and encouraged hobbyists to do it to customise their models. I figure if GW says it's ok, then it must be. Not sure if anyone will break down your door for doing it, though. More seriously, I don't think it's an issue that anyone would take issue with. GW has shown off models with press-moulded details many times and described them as such, including GD reports. Scibor's whole thing is being "inspired by" GW designs. And you'd be making.. I dunno? A couple of faces at most? It's more of an advertisement for Scibor than anything else. And you'd not be selling them as "conversion kits" so there's no "for profit" involved.
Hmm all true. There just seems to be some kind oof hammer that gets dropped around here if someone mentions it. Either way, I think I've come up with something a touch simpler! Pictures forthcoming but not till I wake up at the very least.

As long as your not selling it your golden . You can make 1000 copies of your 1 space marine and claim the chapter all look identical, but you put it up for sal on eBay and watch your doorstep for the good lawyers from GW to come and knock.
Ugh, I don't even want to paint one space marine . Let alone shoddy copies I've made!
Da Boss, assembly to game table? Probably 2-4 hours per building. Mostly simple airbrushing, dry brushing, and so on. I'll try to time one sometime, I'm curious myself now.
That looks plenty good, conveys the dwarfy feel and makes it notably not a Rhino. Given that it's fairly simple, there's also plenty of scope to go a little more detailed on Command/Elite units without overdoing it.
I reckon that's a decent addition to the rhino, makes it look less like a direct Space Marine port. I reckon it will look especially good if paired with an Iron Ancestor.
2-4 hours eh?
This blog is a great advertisement for the terrain. Mantic should be paying you commission!
Probably an hour scouting the internet and coming up with nothing better than the iron ancestor. Cut about five pieces and tried some things before settling on two, cutting takes seconds. The top is just made from cut outs of the beard sections. Maybe half an hour but it'll go down moving forward. Rivets came from a mini hole punch.
Automatically Appended Next Post: @Da Boss wouldn't cost them anything... they'd just get it back in the next kick starter!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Hrmph... I was gonna do a showcase with all of my corporation guys but i can't find one of them... I found one that had fallen and broken off of his base, but the other is totally missing at the moment. Such good lighting right now too.. I guess I'll hold off, wait till I get the Z-corp onto clear plastic bases too.
That looks really great, much larger than I expected, and as others have said makes it look far less instantly like a rhino. The only thing I'm not 100% sure on is the form over function factor - not to be a negative nancy, but the length of that beard might interfere with the tank driving over cars and such.
Though it does look like it could easily be turned into a cattle-catcher for the entire front of the tank.
Yeah it hangs down a bit. Its not a template though, others maybe different. Going to incorporate some similar plates elsewhere on my vehicles. Some of my rhinos will need some fixing. I've got parts of 8, but only 6 complete kits. Or well almost 7. One needs a bottom and top, but I've got the sides and front/back. Two need tracks I think. I may try to improvise something out of plasticard. And I'm pretty light on legitimate hatches for the top. Think I may build a platform onto some of them for a dwarf to shoot the 'storm bolter'. Gonna see if i can improvise a double barreled hailstorm rifle.
Also considering adding braces to hold the rhino side ramps at 90 degrees on my predators. Then I'll add a couple of hailstorm auto cannon toting stormrage vets standing there. May or may not add guard rails. Maybe just a support tether to the dwarfs belt?
Automatically Appended Next Post: I was thinking about an even bigger dwarf face for a dozer/ siege dozer thing like vindicators have.
So I'm a little late to the game, Grim, but I like what I see, especially the FF tank. I like Azazelx's idea of casting something to put on the front. Especially those dwarf banners. I would think you would want them to be relatively flat, as anything much thicker protruding from the front would start to look kind of silly.
Just to throw my hat in the ring, I am almost 1,000% certain its not illegal to recast things as long as you don't redistribute them.
Yeah I dunno about the whole recast thing really. Just seems like certain posts get a ridiculous amount of heat over it. Maybe it's a GW C&D thing.
I'm pretty liable to stick to my plasticard dwarf faces on the tanks for now. Just as long as they don't start chattering in bad English accents about being 'Really Useful War Machines', and chuffing about. If I ever make the forge fathers their own terrain, those dwarf faces will be in for sure. To the point that I'd look into silicon and resin, or at least plaster to make plenty.
I'm still planning to add some shields and hammers to adorn them, kind of like wolf pelts or long scrolls/purity seals on space wolf and dark angel rhinos respectively. Might also do some "gritty makes it look like it's actually being used" items like tools, stowage for gear, and the like.
I've just finished enough forge fathers to make the second squad of steel warriors (tactical marines). I only had to make 8 since I'll be borrowing a couple of those stormrage heavy weapon guys to go into each squad. I made 2 flamer guys and the unit leader to lead this second squad, and 5 more grunts. I did one modestly clever repose which I'm... i wouldn't say proud of.. but pleased with, and I've festooned (great word, simply do not use it enough) them with bits and bobs from the Eisenkern accessory sprue. Mosty extra pouches medkit canisters, and so on... help to make them look more tacticool and less fantasy
Still gotta get them on nails and get to painting. I think I'll finish this second squad of troops, then do a rhino for them and a predator. They need a leader. I might wait till things get a little closer though. Seriously considering doing a conversion with mechandrites just so a MotF stand-in would look the part.
I might even sneak the Helfather in at some point, same color scheme. He'd have to be a count-as MotF with conversion beamer or something... he's too big to hide as a heavy weapon guy, too small to be a dread or terminator. Maybe a terminator captain/librarian/chaplain, but none of them seem to have an option for "overpowered multimelta equivalent" so... yeah.
I gotta say... the half-fantasy nature, moderately soft detail (one of the poses has a rifle that kind of melts into the armor), and fairly limited pose-ability of these guys aside... they're starting to grow on me Don't even get me started on how cool the legit sculpts are, and especially the stuff coming from deadzone. These guys may continue to grow and demand full attention from the WP KS, for lots of FF tanks.
GrimDork wrote: Yeah I dunno about the whole recast thing really. Just seems like certain posts get a ridiculous amount of heat over it. Maybe it's a GW C&D thing.
I think that's really only when people are recasting whole figures, or buying armies from Chinese/Russian/etc recasters.
Yeah. Well. Let's just say if I get something that's suitable for use with instant mold, and I suddenly seem to have even more that something... we'll assume I "did the right thing" whatever that is
Anyway, only one of these really counts as a minor conversion, the rest of them are just accessorized to the gills
To the gills!
Even more stuff crammed back here!
Cut the second arm off the rifle to make it a 1-hand grip, added unit leader command/communication glove thing and trigger thing. Detonator maybe? Then I gave him those weird little drum magazine things from the Eisenkern kit to suggest explosive charges. This is the squad's demolitions and comm officer, surely that mixing of tasks won't cause any issues
The squad leader is just a caring soul with a second medkit so he can take care of any wounded soldiers (the little round things), he also appears to have a second side-arm. Note how the dragonbreath (flamer, possibly melta sometimes) gunner has been festooned with pouches. I assume these are filled with various gear-- explosives, tech gadgets, snacks, hell some of them are probably empty and intended to hold loot and souvenirs.
I'm not 100% what the leader is planning to do with his second hand, possibly draw a tech gadget from his shoulder? Too bad he isn't toting that second pistol!
I realize a lot of the pouches are very obviously shaped to hold modern or even slightly dated magazines for various not as high tech weapons, but they were fairly inexpensive and more or less all I had access to. I think they still give them a similar look to modern soldiers who are covered with useful gear and actually look like they're going to be doing something for awhile... and have enough bullets to shoot more than a couple of badguys. I wouldn't mind coming up with some spare dragonbreath tanks, or hailstorm drum magazines. If I come up with something, I'll probably go back and add them in.
Thoughts? Have I made the not-fantasy dwarfs a little cooler and higher tech, or was this a fail? These guys are all on nails so I'll rattle can spray them as soon as I get the chance. I've got to get another can of white Krylon though. I'm probably gonna paint them in my new favorite yellow and hit them with the Tudor, so they'll more closely match the tank than the first two iterations of yellow. Not gonna be quite as orange, and definitely not as dark as the stormrage vets. I figure that with as many more dwarfs to come as there are (awkward sentence), I may as well try to 'get it right' one last time. The others can get distributed and will hopefully blend in later on.
I think the additions to the Steel Warriors work quite nicely. Certainly taking the edge off the Fantasy-in-Space feel.
Just a thought, if you've got an Eisenkern accessory sprue, don't those things have dozens of spare heads on? Have you tried them on the FF to see if you can manage to get rid of the non-enclosed Dwarf helmets, as those strike me as the most fantasy part of the models?
Hmm. Every head on these guys is one from the steel warrior box actually intended to look scifi. The open faced helmets are part of the torso and would be a bear to remove.
The Eisenkern sprues do come with leader/specialist heads, they're all human heads with berets, they'd be a lot thinner (and possibly taller than) the dwarf heads currently in service.
The first unit probably has some of the fantasy heads, the ones you have to "fix" with a generous allotment of goggles and headsets.
Automatically Appended Next Post: @Shas, Its got a little paint, I'll put it up later.
Its all fantasy legs but the SciFi half has two torsos. One is just the front with a place for arms and choice of head. The other has the head and gun sculpted on. The single piece torso has an open face. They include non enclosed heads you *can* put on the other half, with goggles and headsets, but I like the enclosed variety.
I may use some of my full on fantasy dwarfs with spare pistol hands from the steel warrior kit to improvise a squad of 5 assault marines.
@ToT I reigned it in on the 5th and 6th factions... just the starters and booster bundles. So probably way more than I could ever use in DZ. I think its like 2x plastic not-terminators squads, probably upwards of 10 brokkrs. 2 bikers.. I hope they do a retail set. No iron ancestor, got one coming from DBX and I might just order a few some time.
Forget if I said.. I got those last 8 undercoated and based, and got sense enough to do the red on my marauders with the airbrush too. I may cut out a little shapes wand and try to do the red and leather on the dwarfs with the AB as well.. maybe black for metal... not metal though. It gets all over.
I think the Iron Ancestor is my number on favourite mantic model, but I have yet to pick one up myself. As you know my 2nd shipment order is non-existent.
So Grim what do you find useful about using an airbrush? I have no experience of using one.
While looking for close ups when seeking inspiration for my tank-face, I got to see the ancestor kit's bits. Looks pretty ball-joint-having so making more than one wouldn't be so terrible, I think the torso and arms are on balljoints, the legs may be even. I would have to get the Doomstorm kits because, awesome name, and also because $5 for another primary weapon arm is better than you ever get for dreadnought arms etc.
Oh my airbrush, how do I love thee! Let me count the ways:
Or well maybe not a list, but yeah here we go.
I first got a cheapy knockoff set and since then they've been terribly useful for basecoats. I lent out the compressor and it didn't make it back alive, but I replaced it quickly with something better anyway. I've managed to break or discombobulate both of the useful guns from the set (one was a super cheap plastic job that worked with cans, ick), but I've moved on to a SOTAR 20/20 that I found on amazon for something like $70 (supposedly they MSRP ~$400, but that's just bloated to make sales look good imo).
Ok history aside, just wanted to point out that I am using one of the better quality (imo) brushes that badger makes so that's where my experience and frame of reference live.
Also using Minitaire airbrush paint (and a little vallejo model air), which could probably use a wee bit of thinning for some colorss... but are mostly fine out of the pot and that's how I used them.
List anyway!
*Applying basecoats! Smooth and fast, this is just way more fun that any kind of brushing on. Overspray is not an issue. You can undercoat too but I find that the airbrush paint is usually more likely to scrape/rub off than a solid coat of Krylon or the like.
*Painting anything bright. I realize I could basecoat these by hand with a white undercoat too, but I've been using way more red and yellow since I got the thing. May be a coincidence though. Though... in the winter you *can* use it for undercoats to get by. And if you're going to just display the model, I think it would be fine. But I prefer rattlecan priming for durability in game pieces.
*Stencils! I'm just now getting into them, but holy cow there's a lot you can do with stencils. Crisp lettering and numbers, make your own cut-outs for symbols and the like. This also bleeds into masking stuff off for camo or airbrushing more than one color.
As my control improves I'm working on learning to mask things off by hand so I can paint progressively more of the model with the airbrush. There are tons of videos on youtube but I'm too lazy to peruse them. Maybe in the winter or something.
It's a totally different feel from painting with a standard brush. I can get tired of either of them, but I'm usually not burnt out on doing one or the other *at the same time*. Edge highlights or detailing getting me down, Basecoat some fuggin tanks! And so on.
I think the strongest aspect is that it's another way to paint, and that helps me get stuff done.
Speaking about the two in the middle, the finished dwarf and the one to his left. The dip i'm going to use on these guys moving forward is the same one I use for everything else now. It isn't as dark, that is. So, keep medium leather for boots/gloves/etc, or switch it to solid black with light grey highlights (basically exactly what the belts/pouches/boots are for the marauders so far)? I'm somewhat torn, the leather is a bit earthier and goes along well enough but the black maybe helps to scifi them up a little bit? I'm also not sure how I feel about using the leather as abundantly as I would be on this second squad with all of the bits and bobs floating around.
I think I'd go with the black- leather doesn't seem that sci-fi, and when you consider how high-tech the FF are, they're probably using kevlar or something like that for the pouches, something durable, hard-wearing and synthetic rather than leather.
Yeah. even modern soldiers don't use leather. Brown leather pouches in 40k and not-40k is a holdover from fantasy and certain parts of historical gaming.
Sounds good to me, I think I just did it that way on the first batch because of the fantasy legs
Heck, this should probably make them slightly faster to paint too, woot. Hopefully get that unit done this weekend then! maybe their tank too... but I want to do the converting to it before I spray.
Also need to put some hours into a...ah... certain project.
@TDL, Having watched that show, I now see your avatar never *really* changed, did it?
Denied! Since they're hurting in the don't look SciFi enough department...black will hopefully help. If they weren't half fantasy minis it wouldn't matter quite as much.
Woot! The wife got me a couple of infinity minis for father's day I'm not sure that it's entirely appropriate, me getting toys on the day celebrating me being a father... but I'll take it
Until they're out of their blisters and getting some paint we'll just go with the stock photos and descriptions, so I got this guy:
http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en/2012/miniatures/moderators-from-bakunin-4/ Who will join my other three moderators, preferably covering them from on-high. Moderators are one of the weakest basic infantry in the game, with maybe 50% accuracy, not exactly the best place in the world to be spending points and gear on sniper rifles... I don't care though, they're comparatively cheap and when I'm running *just* Bakunin guys they can form up in a link team to boost their performance. One more to go and I'll have all of the moderators I care to own.
http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en/2011/miniatures/moran-maasai-hunters/ This guy, I probably wouldn't have bought on my own, which is why he was on my miniature market wish list. He's a skirmisher, and can infiltrate up the field. He's got an ability/item that makes him a bit harder to shoot at for most models, and has his own personal mobile mini minefield in those crazy koalas. Definitely a cool model and I'm actually really itching to paint this one already, so some queue hopping may occur.
Speaking of the Moran, what do you guys think... match the color scheme since it works pretty well as is... or tamper with it a bit. Could switch that red into hazard orange, which is really more of a red-orange... The ribbed part on the side is grey for that model, I could switch it to the light-medium blue I used on my moderator. The default scheme isn't bad though huh?
Been kind of itching to paint another Infinity mini, so we might see one pop into the queue sooner than later!
Woot! The wife got me a couple of infinity minis for father's day I'm not sure that it's entirely appropriate, me getting toys on the day celebrating me being a father... but I'll take it
LOL ! I got a box of Ork Lootas for Father's Day.
I'm partially color blind, so I'll stay out of color scheme debates
I think your post about considering asking for that necron/eldar looking terrain is what inspired me to make my miniature market wishlist available to the wife in the first place
Heh, I've got just a little bit of red/green, or is it the other way? I usually get into arguments about blue/purple type colors and swear I'm just naturally bad at spotting things in general.
Oh well, I get by
I got the Moran and his pet robo-bombs cleaned and assembled, they're currently drying on nails almost ready to be primed. Bet I'm out of white spray though....
Automatically Appended Next Post: Actually... wow... Krylon cans are some kind of superhero or something... You think they're down and out, but when you go to throw in the towel they've got one last heroic action to play. Moran and Crazy Koalas primed
Yeah, we get it from our moms, even though they almost never get it. I'm only colorblind enough to fail the tests.
Like... apparently there's a faint brown boat in all that mess? Nope? Guess I'm colorblind
Took some new shots of my corporation guys, why not share them here too:
Corporation Marine green squad, one man MIA, the search continues...
Corporation Marine gold squad, veterans all, one man down and not pictured, needs some medical attention.
Ranger squad Zulu
Ranger squad Gamma, with improved visors.
Z-Corp Marines, staunch allies... just make sure you don't become part of their supply chain!
I've got as many z-corp as I do regular corporation guys, but I've got to transfer them over to clear acrylics still. And I really need to get my corporation commander guy painted up.
Woot! The wife got me a couple of infinity minis for father's day I'm not sure that it's entirely appropriate, me getting toys on the day celebrating me being a father... but I'll take it
Isn't that the point of having kids? an excuse to play with toys and pretend its for the kids.
Oh man, those pics take me back when you were in your "Countdown until Deadzone!" moment. Good times
I say, if you already tampered a bit with the standard color scheme, maybe keep doing your modifcations to your next Infinity models? The model you painted was very cool looking:
Thanks guys. The Moran guy is actually from the corregedor subfaction, they use more red. But I think I have it figured out, looking forward to putting the paint down and showing him off!
I like my deadzone stuff, but I'm kind of hoping the Moran starts a chain reaction of Infinity minis getting painted
Automatically Appended Next Post: @AdamSouza, didn't see your post there. Hah, colorblinds unite!
I didn't feel like leaving my father's day culinary fate in the hands of anyone else, so while the wife and daughter were elsewhere I concocted myself a BURGERFEAST. Look at it, it all it's greasy glory... even the zombies are after it!
Automatically Appended Next Post: I was gonna airbrush the orange but it's kind of thick and I didn't feel like carefully thinning it down for the airbrush. And I think the airbrush needs a strip down and total clean before It's up for another session.
But seriously, this guy means serious business, just look at him: Disclaimer: please for the love of GOD do not mistake this as some kind of ethnic slur, I really just found the model's extremely serious face to be amusing and paintbrush was already open for the crop.
That belly button does look high, I wonder if it's the angle of the picture.
Infinity is kind of weird like that. The anime aesthetic combines mostly true-scale with usually ridiculously sized weapons. To be fair, I think that combirifle is the same size for most/all nomads, so on the stockier guys it only looks sort of big. It's even worse on the female characters who are usually forced to maintain slender and or pin-up girl proportions.
Case in point:
The gun, and the way she's holding it... ridiculous
I almost got the Moran's orange basecoat done, needs another layer or two. I may try highlighting it with the ryza rust, may just mix something. It really isn't gonna take too long to paint him, hopefully he comes out as well as the moderator!
I absolutely love the burger photo. It is as if those models were sculpted purely for that photo.....
I think in a sci-fi setting the less realism the better. I want my Orks to look out of proportion and bestial, I want my pin up girls to have impossibly large.....ahem weapons. I want to look at a model and think "that cannot ever work" I never, ever want to have to face reality when I am moving my little metal and plastic men around the table......
A my minor rant is over. Love the work GrimDork, keep it coming, such an inspiration to keep on painting.
I see what you might call blue, but it's really more of a darker green/grey or something. And then browns tans, greys. I know where the boat is, but cannot see it no matter how I look at it
Is it just me that finds it amusing that a single borrowed eye test has generated what might be the most back and forth in a short time for the whole thread?
Ahh ha! The purple unicorn trap has been a success! Don't try to run you fiendish aliens, I've already alerted the galactic task forced and you'll be forcibly deported soon!
Alright I managed to get a bit of work done tonight. It isn't much, and I'll be unable to do much more this weekend, but.. something.
Started working on my Moran and my Reverend Moira convinced me to finish her up as well. I've gone a bit further off the default color scheme, but I'm ok with that. Basically I've transplanted all of the red/orange that crops up in the official scheme with blue, and decided to give her a quasi-dracula cape instead of the white-lined version. The Moran got his blue and grey, he's actually probalby closer to done than the Moira, just a bit of leather straps, a wee bit of flesh, and some highlights. And glowey lens things, but those always come last.
Damn Becky...
So I wanted to try a different skin tone for her. I was going for something of a medium tone, not Indian, not African in origin (like I'll try for the Moran), a little lighter... maybe something South American? I dunno though, the pictures turned out pretty dark, but I'll try to work it out with highlights before I dip. What about the cloak? I'm not going back to white, and grey like the outside seems boring, but should I keep it more orange like it is, or bring it back closer to red with some washes/glazes? I think it still needs another couple of light coats of orange anyway, but its enough to give you the idea. The moran doesn't look as finished as I think he is. Most of the backpack and those parts of his arms and chest are going to be white so aside from touchups I'm leaving that to the dip, it's much more subtle than I am. Oh the moira needs her boots painted grey. I'm trying to use a lot of not-metal for my Infinity models, with actual metallics used sparingly for certain parts of guns and belt buckles (cause it's easier to paint belt buckles silver than to paint them black plastic and highlight them =/... not that the nicely done Infinity minis don't have well highlighted metallic or NMM buckles, but I'm only human here).
The Koalas need more coats of orange and grey, but aside from that they won't get a lot more attention. A glow for the eyes and possibly on their backs in a couple of teeny spots and that's it, they are walking bombs, they don't get as many frills as their full time counterparts.
Thoughts, suggestions? I can probably get them both done with just another hour or two, though if it takes longer I don't mind.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Gag, those are much blurrier than I would have expected, maybe I was in the wrong mode. Oh well, I'll get you much better shots when they're done.
Lol, they're project bricks, I found them at Michaels. They could be neat, but they really aren't my favorite material. All of my other pincushion type things were occupied
Thanks for popping by guys, I'm hoping to get them done soon, then it's SRS business LoER project thing and diorama, both due in August. The dwarfs may have to get shelved for a bit, or at least shunted down in priority.
As soon as I get something done though, and the nails get freed up... I'm gonna toss every Infinity mini I have on to them for painting time. Eventually. Lot to do until the middle of august. Then one more thing, but it's Infinity related (just won't update it here for...reasons), to do up to november but it shouldn't take that long. Should definitely be busting out *something* after the middle of august.
Of course... it could be Mars Attacks! minis. Deadzone should come in before that, and then MA and my battlesystems stuff should hit around the same time. Might even have an option to pick up the MA stuff at Gencon, potential woot! And who knows, maybe that upcoming Infinity starter thing will be available at Gencon, or sometime this year. Looking forward to that.
Hmm. I may have to look back into reaper paints sometime. I nabbed a few a while back. I've always liked the pairing of a couple of their grays. I find them a bit too runny for me though, I know they're for layering and stuff... and as I get into painting fewer minis better, their value will go up. I just remember trying to paint a salamanders drop pod with one of the greens over black... That was a hell of a lot of surface to have to put down 10 or better coats... I've learned better now.
Got a bit more work done on the two infinity minis on my painting tray. Getting close to having done with all of the base coats, starting to look at highlights. Tried the eyes. Almost... Remembered to paint them all black then create the dot by putting whites on the edges, instead of trusting my hand to perfectly center (or off center) both dots on the same mini. But I forgot to do the eyes before I did the layers of the face, so now it's kind of like making a couple of smaller dots instead of one central one, instead of having it easy and just blasting either side of the black eye and not worrying about collateral damage on the as yet unpainted face. The next minis, I may do the eyes before I do a single other thing, just because of this. Still, I should be able to get them next time, and I'm getting closer...
My next project won't be updating here for...reasons, but I'll probably be doing some other stuff on the side that will show up here as usual.
Hmm... Been looking for things on which to spend my amazon store credit. They have Infinity minis on Amazon, a couple of different people sell them. The prices are not excellent, Miniature Market and eBay are almost always cheaper, but I don't have a balance on accounts at those sites... SO yeah I was browsing and saw these guys, and remembered how much I like them:
Kaplan (tiger) tactical services.
They're basically mercs, but sort of honorable ones, and they look badass IMO. They belong to the Haqqislam faction which isn't my favorite. Theres a subfaction of Haq called Kapu Qualqi which is a mercenary group and has access to some Nomad units. Nothing I already have... but those same guys are also selling the vanilla nomad starter on amazon and 4/6 models in it are accessible to KQ. I don't love the models as much as I do my Bakunin guys... but they aren't bad at all.
It's also possible that several of those models may get resculpts and make their way into the new operation Icestorm starter box, which I am already considering as a purchase.
If I pick up the 5th Kaplan sculpt and add four nomad models, I only need one more dude. I was looking at these:
Either of the middle and background models, one is a sniper, the other a hacker.
There are other cool Haqqislam models I could branch out into later. I'm dredging up comments and advice on the CB:Infinity subforum to see what people think about viability.
Just ordered the Kaplans, weird ordering something not prime eligible. Sounds like I've got a lot of good options for splicing stuff with them to make a list.
Oh wow yeah, maybe that's why I like the Kaplans so much. I gave up and ordered them today. Then I found out instead of just 68 dollars of amazon rewards, they'd finally rolled over the last month or two and bumped me to 85 dollars. That's a another box and an individual at least with what's left after the Kaplans, but I've got to wait for them to put up something I want to spend the points on.
Got rained out today, and we have to pay for baby's daycare whether we use it or not.. so as soon as the rain downgrades from torrential to something a bit more reasonable, I'll be in full on hobby mode for several hours.
Man just watched an airbrush NMM tutorial and I really want to make my Moira extra awesome by doing it, but I'm not going to risk marring her nearly completed paint job while airbrushing the sword (even masking to protect her may mess something up)... so I guess next time. I'll try something by hand instead.
I like the airbrush, it's a neat tool and for things I understand, it can help save a lot of time.
The very best work always seems to be by brush (unless we're talking about some of the amazing things people do with airbrushes on vehicles), but I'm not that good and will crutch on whatever can help me move forward
Automatically Appended Next Post: I think my two infinity minis are ready to dip, gonna go shake up the can and test it on a dwarf first... it didn't seal properly last time and had some chunky bits curing near the top. I want to make sure the consistency of whats left inside is viable before I ruin a few hours worth of work. Can of new dip doesn't cost more than the hours I've put into these guys
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ahh yeah it's congealed into a near-solid, time to rush out to Lowes, I guess.
Woot! Got a new can of dip and dipped everything I was working through, plus a dwarf. The dwarf kind of brings up an issue... he looks nothing like the last two incarnations of dwarf. The Tudor is very neutral and doesn't taint the underlying color nearly as much as the mahogany. So now he's bright yellow instead of dirty orange yellow. I'll see what you guys think. It can definitely work, but I'll have to eventually redo the other guys. Of course, the warpath kickstarter should have all new hard plastic infantry for the major factions so repaints/changes may be in order regardless.
So, I think the dwarf looks ok, just different. The Koalas are alright given the amount of effort they got (figured walking bombs don't rate as much work ). I'll get into this more later, after I've sealed and based but I think the Moran came out as well as he could given my abilities and the choices for color and technique. I may go back over his knife with silver, it's rather dull, but really I'm quite happy with the model. I think my moderator got some kind of special stars lining up kind of thing that made him look better than I can usually paint, but I am quite happy with the Moran. The Moira, ehh. I'm pretty happy with her, I'm not going to repaint her or anything and she looks better than most of the other stuff I've done lately... but something about her just doesn't feel quite right. Maybe it's the color scheme, or perhaps I just didn't do her enough justice. Maybe it's the black, the white on these guys seems to come out really well and she has very little.
Don't get me wrong, I put a reasonable amount of effort into the Moira, and I think she looks pretty sweet. All of the glowey eye parts and other light sources will get retouched later on, probably during a session where I catch up several models worth of them all at once. The Moira's cloak got a basecoat, and two rounds of highlights (most of the grey on either model did) as well as the dip. The sword.. well I wanted to NMM it with the airbrush but I wasn't going to risk my paintjob even to masking tape/putty damaging it. Her skin tone lightened up a bit and is right about where I want it, the Moran's too (but his is darker, like I wanted it )
Tudor is like magic for white. All of the white on these guys was single layer (the undercoat, with touchups only where necessary to correct errors from other steps) with a dip, but it looks better than white I've tried to layer up from black and so on. I could have added some more color to the Moran's backpack. I think it looks ok how it is, but if it ever starts to bug me, I shouldn't have trouble sorting it out.
The one thing that I didn't do on either of these guys that I did for my Moderator, and intended to do for all of my Infinity minis, was a bit of free hand or some other personal touch. The Moderator got two tattoos and fancy sneakers. I guess the Moira got green lipstick but you just about can't tell. I guess maybe her dracula cape counts but I'm pretty sure that's going to be standard equipment for my Sin Eaters. Though I'm 'thinking of doing the outside white, the studio models are that way and white turns out really well with this dip. The Moran has no cool features. Maybe when I go through and do touchups/enhancements I'll put some tally marks on his combirifle or something. I know I'm going to try for a moderator logo tattooed on the arm of my moderator with multi sniper rifle. Not sure about the rest aside from my power puff girls themed robots (only one robot now, but there's a pair of them I'm look at getting eventually).
Ok enough blathering on. One last image before I go.
These things are like a quarter at Lowes. I'm not sure of what to do with them yet, but I know there has to be something I can use them for. I'm just not sure what. Some kind of small building, or perhaps a structure to go on the roof of a building. Maybe a group of them to make some kind of power plant or something. I'm just not sure yet, but I know for a buck I can come up with something pretty cool using those.
Finally a notice, my next painting project won't show up on this thread until late august, though you shouldn't have any trouble finding it if you look I'll probably continue to work on the dwarfs inbetween sessions for that project, as well as working on getting more Infinity minis set up and ready to paint.
The electrical boxes. Poke around the internet. I know I've seen all sorts of uses for them as terrain, but for the life of me, I have nothing bookmarked. I am ashame :(
And nice works on the nomads. The mini is known as the Reverend More-Ass, FYI
Yeah, I'm not surprised. Could be worse, she could be the Kum butt girl I'll look up some uses for the electrical boxes at some point, I know I've heard about them being used before which is what prompted me to nab a few.
Gah. Glad I painted first. Just spent 3-ish hours tidying up the garage and moving stuff around so we could fit the second car in, only to discover that the door for that side doesn't work right. I had put off calling the landlord because we stopped using that side for cars, and because it's been working the last dozen times I've used it over the last couple of months. That changes now, gotta call those suckers.
Extremely. If you pronounce the word properly, I think it's koom, or something, but still. And butt girl since she's riding a bike with her ass in the air. One of the cheesecakier models along with the cat doctor and several others. I guess the More-Ass is one of them.
Kum Butt (It's a Turkish word. Means Sand) is discontinued. I do not know why More-Ass is still in production. I guess because it is part of the Bakunin starter box. And matches the art in the Rulebook. The new Moiras are quite nice.
They sell her separately too. The new ones huh? I'll look again, if they aren't as slutty I may be interested. Though... they're expensive and fragile to be making a link team with them. I'd rather do a custodier trio.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Riot grrls are starting to grow on me too, they manage to fail at sexy (a good thing) while having attitude and being a neat concept-evasion centric heavy infantry. Barely tougher than some MI, but they have mad dodging skills. Well, passable. Pupniks have mad dodging skills.
Riot Grrls are the bane of my existence. For HI they do have mad dodging skills. They are very killy. And as expected, tough to kill. Try a 3 or 4 RG link sometime.
Why not 5, they're sort of affordable, and +3 bs is nuts I really like the profile, they're not as tough as HEAVY HI's, but they get 16 dodge with reasonable armor and BTS, plus sexy bonusi from being linked.
Dear god I think I'm in love... Throw flash grenades at PH 16 (if 5 strong) at something with poor BTS. Grenades aren't limited and still gain the +1 burst right? Success? Walk into a clear shot and just lay into the poor sucker. That, and take several with Blitzens. Blitzen is disposable and burst 1 but with two shots, just like Custodier link can shoot two markers in one action, burst blitzen some poor tag to death
Gah, more things to want
Currently prepping a brief photo shoot of those last five models, got them sealed and based, woot!
I like him. Quite a bit, really. But he doesn't come close to matching his predecessors. What to do? What do you guys think?
And now for the chunky bit, lots of photos of my two (err, 4) newest additions to my growing Nomad force. There are more photos in the gallery, some of them are redundant or of only slightly different angles.
Reverend Moira, also known to the Infinity community as Reverend More-Ass. It is a well-earned appellation, and my painting efforts have done nothing to detract from it. Not exactly my taste, but she came in the starter box and so she got painted!
Yes, there is a fairly obvious error that needs a touch up. It will appear in all of these pictures. I swear it wasn't there when I went to dip =/
Damn Becky.
Ok, I have no idea where that red-orange spot came from. It wasn't there when I touched up. I don't think it was there when I dipped. Whatever, it will take 2 seconds to fix the next time I go around doing those. I like her better on a base and with the matte sealer. Considering going over the black clothes with gloss, but I'm gonna sit on the decision for awhile. Fairly happy with her overall.
Gonna add the Moran in another post.
Automatically Appended Next Post: So this next guy turned out fairly well and I'm pretty happy with him. He has since been popped off of his base and positioned as far back as possible on a new base. He's still a bit tippy, but he should be table worthy as long as I'm careful with him. Totally used super glue on everything but one of the little robots. Probably going to continue using it in the future. If I drop one of these hard enough to break the super glue bond, it would probably snap the epoxy too, and hell it may even serve as a release for some of the force. Also, no frosting, that's what I was trying to get at there.
Moran, Massai Hunter. (and that's like his title, and them explaining his title, he doesn't have a name yet)
I quite like the way the colors have come out, and just the general outcome.
What do you guys think about these last two (four)? Are they on par with my Moderator, or a little behind? I don't think they're any better, but I'm not an impartial judge of my own work. Comments and criticism welcome!
Finally, a fun shot just because:
Remember you can click on anything for a zoomable picture, and as always thanks for looking
Really need a proper side-by-side of the Forgefathers to tell the difference here, given how different the colours of even the same model can come out in photos. And... is that a bare-arsed nun?
Maybe you can side-by-side a pair of those blue tubs as a building base, then glue and stack some DZ parts on top - giving them a lot of extra height (for 25c)?
I'll see about getting a dwarf comparison. And it sort of kind of is. I think there's maybe a tiny bit of outfit that runs down the back in the middle, connecting to the front but it's kind of obscured... and does nothing to keep the butt from hanging out. I'm not sure I'd have bought her on purpose, but she came in my Bakunin starter and so she wasn't not getting painted
Yeah, that might work for the buildings. Certainly, I'll find some kind of use for them.
You did a good job of painting the reverend... but its just a ridiculous model. I had a good chuckle when I saw her. I guess normally her cape would cover that up, but it has "momentarily" moved out of the way during her action pose.
I like the newer dwarf better than your old ones... I think. Az is right, comparison shot would help. He definitley looks more defined. I don't know if you dipped him or not, but if you did, its a lot less noticable. I guess he looks cleaner, is what I'm trying to say. He could be the new recruit who hasn't been in the warzone as long... or something.
Thanks guys I didn't spend forever on the Infinity stuff, but longer than I do on the dwarfs or similar. After I get this batch of Dr Who stuff out of the way I'll probably start tearing into my remaining Infinity collection. I've got 9 or so other nomad minis to go, 3 yet to build, and a box of 4 kaplan security dudes incoming. I've got enough amazon credit to pick up another box and a half too, once someone posts up something I'm looking to buy. And Operation Icestorm, whenever that exists
I really hope to play Infinity some day, it seems like with rotating out just one or two minis per game you could have a lot of variance, and there are so many subtle tricks tactics and nuances to keep you busy.
I know what's 'wrong' with the dwarf. I used minitaire irradiated yellow instead of vallejo model air uhh gold yellow or whatever it was. And the dip is way less obscuring. I think the black is in to stay. The dirty orange wasn't bad, but in some ways I like this better. I may get out that other yellow and brush some onto the others by hand, or at least one, to see if I can get something in between.
Your Moran is looking good. I'm not a fan of his sculpt, but I think you did a good job on it. More-ass I just can't take seriously though. It's like the Moderator with the lollipop. It just seems a little too goofy having her ass sticking out like that.
The lollipop is OK, but her gun is either made of paper or she has a reinforced cyborg wrist to hold a rifle like that...
I probably should have wish listed the boarding shotgun Moran. At least I got out painting a tartan cape this way. His pose would be better if he were leaning back 10-15 degrees or so, he's very tippy and doesn't look super realistic with that stance. Or the rifle with one hand in the air like that.
More-ass is not a mini I would have bought off the rack. But she came in the starter and damned if I'm not going to paint her. Could a painted her rump like it was a skintight suit, but in the ennd I simply embraced the cheesecake. Hell. I may go back and give her a heart tattoo on the left cheek just to drive the point home
The Moira link box has sculpts with tighter proportions, and while they've still got slutty outfits, they aren't nearly as humorously posed. But they're MI that cost like low end HI, multi rifles are expensive. And their odd for -6 enemy bs is amazing until someone with a flamer just ruins their day all to hell and back.
More likely to get riot grrls than moira box, don't llove the sculpts but they're growing on me and the profile/fluff makes them my favorite HI to date.
I almost picked up a copy of infinity a couple weeks ago while it was being demo'd a the game store, but I kept hearing about a third edition coming out so I passed. I keep looking at the Asian faction that has the monks, I really like the look of those guys.
Yu Jing (ching) has some neat models, I want to make an Akira themed biker gang list out of the Japanese branch Third is supposed to be out sometime this year. Not sure when. Might get it myself.
Theophony wrote: I almost picked up a copy of infinity a couple weeks ago while it was being demo'd a the game store, but I kept hearing about a third edition coming out so I passed. I keep looking at the Asian faction that has the monks, I really like the look of those guys.
You can totally pick up the game even though a new rule 'edition' is coming out.
The existing rules are free online, and no model you buy is going to be nerfed/nuked/un-usable. Take the dive and have fun.
Nothing big, but a couple of things I'm working on. These may end up being 'good enough' for now, but I'll want to weather them a little and seal them too.
Going to use these ad-walls to cover the empty wall sections of my deadzone buildings. I like to have the option to put the building against the edge of the table for increased playability, but when I want less terrain to go further, it really helps to stick things in the middle of the board and not packed out around the edges. Just cut out a couple of 3x6" sections of plasticard and made the banners in paint. They could be better, and I may fix them up someday when I feel like working with the GIMP.
Took some fiddling to get them right around 3x6", accidentally made two that were 3x8" due to some improper math with pixels, and then made another set too large due to getting something hinky with the resolution or something. I had thought 300x600 pixels would be 3x6" after looking it up a ways back, but I had to go with something like 287x574, and I probably could have shrunk them just a teeny bit more. Oh well, all of the important details survived the trimming to fit.
Need to get a base coat onto the ad-wall backing that matches the building each goes to, then run some dip over it to color match and lightly weather. May or may not get it done today, I've got some other things to do before I (hopefully) get a game in tomorrow. I think I may modify a couple of deadzone clips to fit the backs as well, so I can actually plug them into the buildings instead of resting them next to them or just using blue tack.
Also, check it out, goodies!
Can't wait to tear into these, but I've got some other stuff to do. Really excited to work on them though, they've got loads of pouches, backpacks, and look like they mean serious business. I kind of would have preferred the sniper to have a crouched ADS pose, but it's a squad, someone ought to be pointing.
Like I said, I hope to get a game or two of deadzone in tomorrow with a buddy from out of town, got to get my cards and counters out, as well as finalize the lists and brush up on the rules just a tad. I'm pretty sure I've got enough terrain to get by, though things aren't going to be as multi-leveled as I would like.
I like the stock color scheme pretty well, but I can't blend like them so I'll have to make some concessions as I actually get to laying down the paint.
Thanks! I needed something to put back there, and I figured the corporation was very consumption and advertisement oriented. Going to continually add more posters and marketing devices as I think of them.
Agreed on the posters, great idea. If I can muster the computer skills to knock some up I will do so. You could extend into adverts for Dreadball season/tournaments too.
Looking forward to the Infinity models too, between yourself and Chemical Cutthroat I am gradually learning about the game and its models. I just do not know if I need another game system right now.
Can't wait to get to the Kaplans. I won't really have enough models to make a force with them until I buy more, but that isn't really going to stop me, or even heavily influence when I get to painting them They have started me down the path to another faction though, will probably get the Qapu Kualqi starter box sooner than most (though there is still a *lot* of nomad stuff I wanna do).
All I did for the posters was take some pictures of my own models and stick them in paint, resizing and trimming till they fight the right dimensions. Had to print it out three times to get the right shape, though the first time I was using the wrong numbers. Well, the space background for one of them was blatantly ripped out of the deadzone rulebook pdf I have, but y'know. Gonna hunt through that and nexus psi pdfs to see if there are any nice scifi symbols I can 'borrow' for use as slightly more futuristic signage at some point.
I'm not even playing Infinity at the moment. I've learned enough to be dangerous (ly uninformed ), the basics for making a list and how things interact, but I'm mostly just picking up stuff to paint that *might* eventually get used in games. If I can find someone to play around here. It's kind of strange, the longer I look at Infinity stuff, and the more models I paint... I'm getting to where I like more and more of the range. At first I was only interested in nomads, and just the one faction. Now I'm looking forward to working on a bunch of nomad stuff, and some Haqqislam stuff. I've also caught myself eying some pan-o stuff and one of the combined army factions. So far I'm still not interested in ariadna, aleph, or much of Yu Jing... though those japanese biker gang dudes are pretty killer.
Blah, gonna try to trim up some more barricade bits so I can add some more cover in for the supposed games tomorrow.
A-ha! You got the Kaplans. They were what started me down this dark path toward creating a Qapu Kalqi army. Are you planning on keeping the studio colors, or are you going to do your own thing with them?
It's hard to say. The default scheme looks really nice but I think it does so by having a lot of subtle highlights and blending going on. I think mine would look too grey if I went with the default scheme. I may do something a bit more black. Like a black base, then a thicker kind of an edge highlight, then light edge highlights. I'm not going to try blending any tiny surfaces like that, but I can try to make a richer black or something. Probably the same white heads and likely shoulderpads. As much white as I can work in, honestly. Tudor does great things for white and it makes painting simpler, but better, than if I didn't use it. I may try to do some of the freehand like the shoulder badges and bicep eject/play symbol things, but i dunno if it'll come out.
I've heard of a thing you do where you print out a black and white photo of a model and paint it in to see if you like it... I may try that and see if I could make them look neat with the white parts inverted to black, and maybe white fatigues? And maybe once like that with another color, maybe one that ties in with another force, or one I want to use with my QK eventually.
I have a feeling I may end up doing the stock scheme pretty closely though.
So (as always) I seem to be a few posts behind, but I love those walls. You've done some cool stuff lately with your terrain, and I think these posters are some off the cooler things you've done.
Wish I could join the discussion on the Infinity models, but I just don't know enough about them.
Ehh, aside from the distant future hope that I may someday play... its pretty much just a bit of armchair general attached to painting projects.
If it helps, the nomads are kind of a counter culture, in infinity there's some big AI that supposedly helps humanity out but the nomads think its a bad deal and they seceded from everyone else and float around in three really big spaceships. Bakunin is where most of my nomad dudes come from and its kind oof like sin city, trafficking in whatever is illegal wherever they're trading at the moment. Lot of crazy stuff like gene splicing, cat girls, genetically modified animal people underground pit fights and a specific division of gene modded cop to deal with it and so on.
The last dudes are Kaplans, an 'honorable' merc company that generally works within the haqqislam faction, which has some of the best biotech going for them.
Thanks . I like the ad-walls, they save me on dz tiles while keeping a little versatility, and seem to fit with the corporate creed. Need to get some gimp skills though and borrow from successful real life ads though.
Got some barrels and other scatter base coated tonight, gonna hold off on the dip for now. Will take pictures while gaming tomorrow, if convenient.
Thanks Shas, I need to dirty them up a bit but they totally close off the buildings and let me move them further into the board to make more efficient use of the terrain I have. And then I can kick them off and put the buildings against the edge of the table for when I want to do some dramatic interior shots.
Ok, just got done playing two slightly modified games of Deadzone. I have much love for it. I need to clear the models and terrain away and take care of some stuff before the toddler gets back, then I have dozens of pictures I need to clean up and get posted. I'm sure half or more are blurry but most of them were of cool moments so I'm keeping many. Very many cool things happened, I hope I can get back in time to have a fresh memory of them all. BBS.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Alrighty. It's already slightly past my 8 hours of sleep before morning window. I think I'm going to take the better part of valor on this one and do the report tomorrow, or at least as early into the week as I can manage. Should yield better image handling, typing, and all that. I did manage to spend a few minutes in note pad filling a few paragraphs with the most memorable moments and the general flow of each game.
I only got to play twice, and one of those missions was the short intermediate mission from the campaign book, but damn I think I could grow to love the game. I'm hoping to get in at least a couple more games before I throw myself to the wolves at Gencon during the Jane's Gully campaign in which I'll be participating.
We avoided using the command action of our leader units, and we didn't bother with overwatch. There was only one time I considered using overwatch anyway, and not having it as an option led to a pretty cinematic and efficacious action instead. Not using the command option was more of an issue for me as there were two, or maybe three times which I thought another model taking an action would have been superior to my enforcer Sgt doing something himself, but oh well.
Actually, I've got to say, it was only two games but I think I've got a higher opinion of the Enforcer Sgt than most people. He isn't stellar, but I think he can do alright if you use him properly. Down at 50 points he was perfect, there was no way to take a 50 point strike team with five models, not having specialists would be lame. Instead, I had the three most expensive standard enforcers you can take (or close to it, not counting the uber expensive captain), and one basic rifle guy. I took the Sarge, sniper, defender, and that regular rifle dude. This four man team got to go first every round solely because of the Sarge, if I had used a sniper as my commander I could have only moved 3 guys at a time weakening my ability to concentrate effort, and potentially losing the initiative. Using the command action would have made him even more valuable (ordering the sniper to double tap... delicious). I almost wish I had two rifle guys instead of the Defender, maybe take an ammo item for each... but it was what it was. I feel like I missed out on the Enforcers' key ability to mass suppress the enemy force, even though I did do it a couple of times to good effect anyway.
As expected, the sniper was ridiculously good compared to everyone else. And also as expected, I spent a lot of time dreading and reacting to the stage 2 plague guys. They're brutal. Though... stage 3s in the right situation can be rough too. In the second game he got excellent mutations, one s2 had agile allowing him to clear 3 cubes a round before movement cards. He also got an acid bite for one of his s3s which could completely negate enforcer armor in melee, and one had an acid spit that did the same at a short range.
Kind of along the same line as feeling the Sgt is better than I thought, enforcers can totally mix it up in melee. I mean, they should avoid it if they can, but deadzone boards are cramped and plague nasties can cross the entire board in 2-3 rounds pending deployment. CC is going to happen, having a Sarge or assault Enforcer around for counter charge purposes can win you the day. Even if that model ends up doing a heroic sacrifice (happened twice within three turns in the second game... but damned if I didn't pull it into a win), that may be all he needed to do. Just getting a second body into a fight helps your guys survive, and makes the Break Off action way more likely. You get your fighter tied up, preferably doing damage but entirely likely to wiff, and allow your shooter to break away (possibly with a strong enough success to get another action once they do!) to effect change elsewhere. Just get that shooter clear of being in an adjacent cube for when the big nasty kills the lone rearguard and starts looking to consolidate into somebody.
I'll save the rest for the report, but a final thought is that I love the exploding dice. Sometimes you just get to relentlessly bury some unit, other times a sure thing gets grounded out and you've got to scramble to figure out how to fix the problem. The 'sploding 8's typically trend towards making a sure thing surer, but these dice are even more fickle than usual and like to throw curveballs and upsets and random intervals. I had a second gen plague charge my sarge, the s2 wiffed and the sarge hit all his marks popping it's head in his powered glove. More commonly, several of his plague dudes (sometimes with the help of cards) totally shrugged off some particularly weighted fire against them.
Anyway lots of rambling. Pics tomorrow if I can help it, battle report as well if I have enough good shots and if my memory holds up.
Sounds great, and I agree with the thoughts on the exploding 8s. I think my record is 6 successes from 3 dice, if I recall right it was to save an Yndij from a rampaging S2.
I too haven't played with the command actions yet, but I agree the sarge is nice to have, for the melee potential and command totals.
Thanks, hoping to get a report or two up. Probably more of a general flow of the games than a specific action-to-action accounting, I won't remember that closely.
Also thanks about the sig, needed to do something.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Huh, just had amazon send me their usual crappy email about various things I've even sort of looked at, but it was Infinity this time. Got me to searching the place a little harder, there are more models and deals to be had than I originally thought, so I may be ordering an influx of nomads soon. No Qapu Kalqi starter for my Kaplans though
Automatically Appended Next Post: So I didn't get exactly what I had been planning to get next, but I did manage to nab 4 more infinity minis. $56 bucks, basically full price for two individuals and 15-20% discount on a two remote blister/box. Now, the individuals weren't a great deal, I admit. But one was the last moderator I needed to complete my set, and he was always gonna be at least nine bucks before shipping. The other was a Riot Grrl. I figure I'll get the loose one (pun unintentional, though potentially amusing ) and see if I like them better after I paint them myself. If so, it'll just cost me $30 to get the last 4 at minimarket.
The remotes I got for basically the same price as you would at miniature market, so that wasn't bad at all. And now, I can do my powerpuff themed half-spider killer robot team
So ok, finally got the pictures cropped to remove too many details of my opponent or my living room, though a few artifacts remain since cutting them would have killed important parts of the shots.
Overall, I'm fairly happy with how most of the pictures turned out given the total lack of tripod, proper lighting, and all that. Some of them are blurry... but I kept those which were pertinent to me telling the stories. I may try to type these up a bit nicer, a bit more professional, but as I've already added paintbrush notes and pew pew lazors in places... probably not too terribly professional
The first bit was a solid plague victory, something of a smash and grab...
As you can see, some of the terrain needs just a bit of finishing, but i felt that more was better, even if it wasn't entirely done. This was the intel mission from nexus psi, unmodified, which gave us both 50 points to spend on our teams. Being the host, and knowing the rules, i made both strike teams from my painted collection, and set up the terrain. We got the opposite corners deployment type, with plague set to go first. The only win condition for this mission (aside from a wipeout, i guess) was to secure the intel, in one of the 8 white cargo crates. Being that the stage three, s3, plague are fast and can move another cube than my guys, and that there were as many of them as the enforcers --not to mention their big hulking stage twos, s2-- i felt a bit of a disadvantage was at work. When three of the four randomized crate positions ended up on the plague end, i knew i'd be fighting hard to eke out a victory.
Now, a few atmospheric shots displaying the initial set up of the enforcers in greater detail.
I didn't get a lot of shots of the plague set-up, my opponent was too busy rushing them at equipment crates going for the win! Just ammo! Note the roaring s2's mutation, acid bite! Very deadly, that one.
The other s2 got rapid metabolism, making him just as fast (and twice as terrifying) as the s3's. Here, you can see my opponent getting ready to make an important discovery...
But to add suspense, here's another shot of those nasty s2's converging.
Oh, look! It's the solitary game winning objective, the precious intel! Too bad it was well behind the middle line and near the plague start zone, especially bad for me that this particular s3 had the vestigial wings mutation and dynamically glided down to snatch up the vital intelligence package!
The s3 'general' mutant leader has a command of 2/2, allowing up to 4 plague to move per initiative step, within the first turn of the game, my opponent already had me bouncing off the ropes. But hell, this was my first proper game of released deadzone, and I was gonna come off those ropes swinging! To that effect, I quickly mobilized my entire strike team (i also had a 2/2 command leader, but only 4 guys in total) in an effort to leave that dastardly plague mutant a smoking crater!
I moved my rifle enforcer forward out of the relative safety of his cover in order to gain a clear shot on the plague mutant. Unfortunately, the damn thing was tough and the nearby cover managed to help counter my extra dice.
Weep not, however, for I had brought along what is likely the most fearsome profile within the enforcer ranks, the dreaded sniper! And snipe he did! This wasn't one of those 8v0 success super kill shots or anything, but the sniper rifle's armor piercing charge and the shooter's skill successfully brought the mutant down! I admit, the chalk line is a bit of a dramatization, but that mutant went down hard, leaving the objective temporarily unclaimed!
Here you can see my defender rounding the corner to put some much needed fire down the field, I was hoping to push the s2 back and knock him down to alert status, instead of his combat enhancing enraged level.
However, it was a long shot and s2's are very durable, he doubled the shoot roll with his survive and negated the knockback effect, ending my turn.
hooo-boy, a nasty s2 plague mutant and he's way, way, too close to my lines for comfort...
My sergeant surveys the incoming rush with cool dispassion, being on an armored walkway without an expedient access from the ground level has nothing to do with it...
Here you can see my opponent reaching for his s2, remember when I mentioned that s2 had the fast rule for this game?
Well, regardless, he totally had it, and he totally closed distance with the sniper in a rush of bony plates and twisted flesh! The sniper isn't any worse than a normal enforcer at melee, however they aren't very good by default... and the s2 is a combat specialist. Let me show you the dice roll...
I think his abilities, enraged status, and charge action started him with six dice, at least a couple exploded...
... just like the sniper.
here's the other important thing to note about that turn...
my very next activation was to move my rifle enforcer to where he could get sight of the enemy cube so I could go for a delay via suppression...
I think i got him down to pinned, but pinned wasn't quite good enough. Here, you can see my defender trying to slow up the other s2, but to no avail.
At this point, the fight as pretty well over, I decided to go with a daring clear shot head shot on that dastardly s2... but yeah that was more or less a wiff.
Things turned out ok though as the s2 wiffed it's own attacks when his activation came around... only to be met by just exactly enough successes to overcome his toughness and deliver two points of injury, and people say the sarge can't fight... anyone can get lucky
/dance, who want's some!?
Oh, well crap. My sarge managed to keep his head for the round, but my opponent's next activation got his intel-carrying s3 to alert from pinned, and then off the board in a hurry.
So, yeah, I was pretty much doomed to failure on that one when the box ended up on my opponent's side. If it hadn't be so close to the liquid storage tank, I might have had better luck. At least I managed to get us to round 3, if I had done nothing, the plague would have had the intel off the board on the first turn!
Thanks for reading folks, I think the second report is a bit more exciting... it was a really close call with quite a few dynamic maneuvers going on. The images are in my personal gallery, something like deadzone batrep2. I'll try to get that one up tomorrow or by the weekend, but for now I've got to sleep.
Oh, yeah, so not only did I blow out my amazon bonus points on more Infinity models, but since mantic decided to throw out a 25% off discount code for today only.... I went ahead and picked up three iron ancestors, and the three pack of jotum hailstorm cannons. I may have to rethink redoing my marine tanks and just take 3 not-dreads and 3 thunderfire cannons in my space dwarf not-spacemarine list
Nice battle report , really excited to get into the game myself from reading it. Also noticed how nice it is with your clear bases you put on your models. I've been considering doing that lately as I dislike basing, especially when you choose a style that doesn't mesh well with your opponents board. "I'm looking a you snow covered terrain board "
I skipped the dz IA's because they were almost the same price as a standard ancestor, though the different arms would be considered as free. Its a good unit in current warpath, subs well as a rifleman/standard/potentially mortis dreadnought if I ever try to play 40k with my not-marines, and looks like a pretty decent kit overall. Ball joints and stuff, so some flexibility. The jotums were probably the excessive part, thought i could count-as them for 3x thunderfire cannons
Also... free shipping, i had to get free shipping, cause bumping my order by 40 bucks of jotum to get up to the free shipping limit to get rid of the five dollar shipping rate.... totally worth it...
I'm pretty sure that mission is meant to be over pretty quickly, it's small and the crate deployment can very easily hand victory over to one side. But i think you tend to play that mission inbetween your other missions trying to get the temporary buff that winning it gives your strike team, so it's kind of meant to be quick and such.
Our next game was regular deadzone, though we kept the two 50 point strike teams and agreed to lower the VP win condition to 8 instead of 10. I found that game more interesting, it was definitely one of those close-calls for sure.
@ToT it kind of makes the thing a bit more childish, but i'm ok with it
@Theophony what you've said is a lot of the reason i've opted for clear bases... ease of use, always look like you belong, and if you go with the thinner kind like me you only run up about 15 bucks for a pack of 100. If i ever make it over to affton to check out miniature market, i could totally bring my dz set up if you aren't already playing by then. Of course, it's usually much easier for me to do such a thing in the winter due to work...
@Cam thanks, it's been forever/never since i've gotten to play a wargame with fully painted models and terrain... well i guess a couple of my pieces are still in the process of getting painted but it was close!
Still haven't gotten a good chance to dump the other 30-40 photos for battle 2 and do the write up, probably this weekend? I did want to show off my latest supply drop though:
the latest ''free'' infinity purchases with my amazon store credit, so now the powerpuff girls nomad remotes theme is totally going forward, i've also gotten the last moderator i want/need for a full link team. The riot grrl is for me to paint up to see if i like working on them, the 5 grrl link sounds awesome in game, but i'll have to make sure i want to paint them first you'll also see the final supply drop for that project mainlining in my other plog.
Thats all, just a supply drop, the second report should be soonish.
Must resist infinity, though if the rules are good I could always sub models that I already have. Oh and I shamelessly stole your barrel idea and made 9 of them this morning. I have many pages of cool stuff to dig through your thread to steal ideas from.
@cam kind of bummed about not doing the 'throne' comp, but those daleks above need painted along with 6 other Who minis, along with 4 little display sets, as well as a foot tall tardis display box... simply no time to push any kind of limits while i'm already working on that. for shame. The models corvus belli makes for infinity are just rotten with detail and awesomeness, i only started liking one or two factions in their range but now i'm pining after half a dozen =/
@paradigm teletubby daleks? Seems like they have a different site for various locations but it was from http://www.blacktreedesign.com/home.html , they do dr who stuff for the 8 original doctors i guess, along with lots of side characters, and some other things. I'm not terribly sure i like a lot of what they produce, but they do decent daleks which were otherwise difficult to find.
@adamsouza
Thanks!
Excellent.
Hmm?
Check out Litko, or let me know if you find somewhere better
@Theo i never got to play necromunda, but i did read the rulebook once through. I'd say that's the closest thing i've read to help describe infinity, 4x4 board or so, complex rules for moving fast or not fast, prone, hiding, shooting at things that are hiding anyway via speculative shots... The game seems to have a ton of nuance, from using misdirection to fool your opponent into not knowing which mini is your leader to all kinds of sneaky tricks with movement, hacking, shooting out markers and deploying repeaters to make hackable deadzones to bottleneck and disrupt enemy heavies and robots, models pretending to be other models, even more... i would really like to get into it but i've got nobody to play around here.
I shamelessly stole the barrel idea myself, i don't even remember from where, maybe one of the infinity terrain posts somewhere, just be sure you steal mr Souza's tip to put a bit of paper/card inside them to give you a chunkier place to put the glue. Enjoy the blog, and be sure the check out Adamsouza's blog, it has all kinds of cool terrain stuff, I keep finding ideas to steal over there.
Ok, i've got a minute... gonna try to belt out that second battle report, so if someone's around to bump i'll post it as soon as it's done, otherwise i'll post it as soon as someone says something so it'll display on the new post.

By Teletubby Daleks, I refer to the garish primary colour ones introduced to much nerd-range a few series back and slowly phased out and replaced by the old ones, presumably to placate angry fans Horrible, horrible designs! The older ones like you have are way better!
Bump , I've been checking out Adams blog too, its like a little revival of cool things happening lately. Lots of older modelers popping back in, or at least me checking more threads out . Anyway more battle reports chop chop.
Oh those! I was wondering what you could possibly mean... they don't look thaaaat bad do they? In either case these will probably be fighting the 9th or 10th doctor so i'd have to use the older scheme either way.
Excellent, bumps for all! Now, for battle report 2:
Deadzone battle report 2, standard once off, reduced to 50 points from 70 for time constraints, victory conditions reduced from 10 to 8 points. I think we managed in about an hour and a half, and mostly because we'd only played once before and i'm terribly slow at making important decisions.
We kept the same setup as game 1, but we got opposite long edges which gave us both reasonably close high points. According to standard deadzone rules we did not know eachother's objectives, he had to infiltrate his guys across the board with no other way to earn points so it was that or to wipe me out, and i had to control (have a guy on, and no enemies adjacent to, the cube containing the objective marker) objectives. Since we reduced the points, i would be able to win by just holding two, i think he would have had to successfully infiltrate every single model on his team to win that way, which is probably why he started coming right at me instead. I got the first turn.
The initial enforcer deployment, you can't see the objectives from here but the defender and sniper are right across from one, and the other two are poised to climb and make a dash for the central objective marker. So glad i made those addwalls, they amuse me to no end.
Enforcers got the first turn of the first round, the sniper wasted no time in using a climb action to get into a better position. The door controls were stuck, but his enhanced physique made a mockery of the cheap settler grade materials.
The standard rifle enforcer, we're gonna call him stock for now, hopped once space up the building, he couldn't run and he couldn't climb, so he had a somewhat limited movement. The sergeant decided to take the low road and patrol around the flank of the abandoned marine HQ node, eyes on the prize.
One note, we had decided to skip using both the command order ability, and overwatch to help simplify this game, a couple of times i would have liked to issue commands, but things worked out.
The defender has advanced under the watchful gaze of the squad's designated marksman, he's very close to an objective marker, but holding one will do no good. That crate at the right just happens to be in the same cube as well, wonder if there's anything good to be had?
Final enforcer advancement as of round 1, moving everyone in one go means the enforcers will get to go first next round as well.
extra shots of things you've already seen, but less important to the flow of the battle:
Spoiler:
This may be considered as a showcase as well as just a battle report, huh? This is the first recruitment adwall in all of it's glory, fittingly mounted on corporation marine building, ignore the unfinished roof barricades and double wide walkway.
A true pro would probably keep his barrel from poking out of the window, but this guy has powered armor and wanted the best line of sight possible.
Heads will be shot liberally and in good measure!
With the enforcer turn and round finished, now we turn to the vicious plague mutants.
Remember that we were using the yellow suited plague with the hmg as the plague s3 general instead. Also note the ap1 razor claws on the lunging s3, and the acid breath on the blue/green clothed plague s3 in the back. You can also now clearly see the objective in the center of the board, one which the enforcers desperately need.
Forget the s2's and you'll be dead before you know it, here they are so we can keep that from happening, soldier.
I find this particular aspect of his deployment curious, i'm assuming my opponent had figured his mission nearly impossible given the circumstances (surely i would hit at least one of them if they tried a refused flank and started bolting). The hidden mission objectives are really cool though. Once both players have more experience, i could totally see the plague player huddling up in a corner to draw the enforcers out, only to jump everyone at his leader due to drawing the assassinate mission, and vice versa.
This objective is deep within enemy territory, i'd have a better chance of wiping the enemy force than getting over here, the general and standard s3 advance cautiously forward eying that crate with more than a little greed.
The next round goes pretty quick, and several things happen packed into the next few images..
Holy crap! Those second gen plague are deadly, and when they pull a rapid metabolism mutation? Really, really bad. It took all four enforcers shooting to make this happen, the sarge's pistol did nothing, the defender's shotgun and even the sniper's fire were shrugged off thanks to that damn cover cube. Finally, the rifle enforcer turned and blazed away at the monstrous thing, combining a blaze away card with his weapon's weight of fire, and the fact that the s2 was already in cover and more likely to go to ground there, it was still close. In hindsight, i should have opted to do that first, and left the others to try to do something else, but y'know.
The bottom field objective team lives to see another turn, but it took everything the enforcers had to make it happen.
Here we have some plague advancement, still playing it a bit safe, nabbing some ammo while the enforcers are recovering from their apparent panic fire. Don't forget about the other s2, and the rest, they're moving around too, but temporarily off camera.
So now we make it to round 3, while we didn't know everything at the time, we were both likely sweating our objectives, i would have to nearly wipe his troops out to hold two of mine, and with his s2 down there was no way he could get off the board, whether we knew it or not we were headed towards mutual eradication!
Boldly advancing forward, the defender moves to spread himself out from the sarge (hindsight says that may have been less than ideal) and to take a clear shot with his riot gun, in an attempt to move the second gen further from enforcer lines and the objective. The pinned (shook off suppressed in his own turn) s2 managed to do really well on his survive roll and didn't budge.
The sarge was considering a counter charge, but if he failed to kill the s2 outright he would reset it's status to alert and have to fight it again in the next turn. This would have been a great time to make an order but since we weren't doing that i believe the sarge went with get mean instead.
This is one point in which i'm a little fuzzy, i think the shotgun may have scooted the thing afterall... i remember him being suppressed for the next round as we had a discussion as to whether or not you could use the courage card followed by get mean (seems like that should be legit if you can move + move card), but either way the sarge did little this turn but the sniper and stock enforcer did plenty.
Thinking he had a secure position, the plague on the industrial building had been blazing away at the sniper to no success, however the stock enforcer adjusted his position and took a clear shot. I'll spare you the photo of the dice, but there were 8 successes.
Yeah, nothing left but wound counters
This was another time i would have liked an order, but things worked out. I threw a move card at the sniper and he used his jump pack to pop down a cube, giving him moderate visibility on the s2 sneaking past the los of his high perch by way of the bridge. I like to think he took the shot while gliding down from the open doorway of the tower, using any recoil from his weapon to help push him to his final position. More likely he just jetted down, took aim, and fired, believe what you will.
The defender tried again to shoot the downed s2 but to no luck, and i believe the sarge had a similar fail, bad luck for those two soldiers all round in this match. Ahh, i've just remembered a couple of things too, when that defender moved to get that first crate? Well, it was only going to be ammo but it wound up drawing the booby trap card from the plague player, which pushed him back a spot. Also one of the plague managed to pin both the defender and sarge in the previous turn when they were huddling up trying to defend against the s2, they both got mean at that point and that's part of why less happened with that s2.
Though he was suppressed, thanks to a courage card and the get mean action, the stage 2 managed to get into the fray, though he was missing the extra dice from only being alert instead of his usual enraged. The defender managed to hang in there without taking damage, but it was close.
The plague general used the twisted card to get a brutal acid bite ability, and the other s3 got another ammo crate.
This sneaky s3 found a frag grenade off to the side!
Here's a snapshot of what the plague are doing this turn, so far it's looking kind of ok for the enforcers, aside from that s2 barely held in check by the defender.
Which you can now see, basically no way i'm getting the objectives without thinning the herd, but he's already incapable of infiltrating a win so it's still annihilate or bust.
The newly mutated general used a move card and hopped up to take a bite out of stock enforcer, ap2 is bad business!
Then, probably because things were looking somewhat grim for his team, the other s3 lobbed his frag up into the mess! Surprisingly, it rolled low enough and the two targets rolled high enough to completely shake off the effect, must have been a dud.
This second gen was deadset on holding the sniper with a blaze away, but the stoic figure would have none of it, the first enforcer action of the next turn is what gave him his wound counter, from the same sniper he was attempting to suppress.
Knowing it would not be without risk, the defender used the ally-in-cube bonus granted by the sergeant to break off from the fight, he did so with a double or better result which left him an action.
I'll let you figure out what that action was This does well to illustrate that even the shotgun can kill things, but it needs bonuses like clear shot and to be within optimal range to have much luck.
This is where stock enforcer starts rolling well and kicking butt, ignore the suppressed marker it doesn't belong there. Stock managed to make a doubled break off action leaving him free for a clear shot at the general's back, boosh.
By this point, the plague mutants were absolutely furious with the sure shooting sniper, so instead of going for what would likely be a guaranteed kill on the wounded stock enforcer, the acid breath s3 uses a move card to get into position for a shot!
But luck was not with him, and the rolls didn't result in any damage, which was lucky for the sniper since his armor would have done little good.
The plague general spent a moment to use get mean to go back up to enraged (being hit by a doubled shoot reduces your aggression level) and charged right back into the stock enforcer, though he didn't manage to hurt him.
The s2 engaged with the sarge had a bit of better luck... The sarge went down hard, and the free action from that doubled fight let the furious s2, now freshly enraged from inflicting damage, hop into the adjacent cube to duke it out with the defender. The defender manages to hold the charge, again, just out of pure luck.
Back to enforcer control, this is turn 4-5 maybe, hoping to get away to clear the sniper to shoot, the defender makes a break off attempt, but the dice are against him and the additional ap of a failed break off leaves him splattered on the neocrete.
The defender was thinking about his team the whole time though, and even though he didn't successfully complete his action, the results were the same. The sniper still had a clear shot...
Even though he'd just heard the very real potential consequences of the action screeching over the comms, stock enforcers best option was still to break off, and it went just as well for him this time as it did the last. I spent at least five minutes agonizing over whether he should shoot the wounded general or the arguably more dangerous acid spitting s3, caution won out, however, and he targeted the general with his doubled break off short action...
...doing a single point of damage with the clear shot, so i feel justified in my choice
Things were really getting down to the wire for the plague player and the game in general, the enforcers have a clear advantage at this point, but it was entirely possible for the plague mutant to get a quick kill and flee off the building from the sniper in hopes of coming back for him later. Fortunately for him, stock managed to survive the acid spit by rolling his only 3 dice for the test as successes, taking zero damage, surviving by zero margin. The mutant figured on bad chances against two enforcers so he tried to take the stock enforcer in a fight, but managed no damage there either.
The enforcers probably could have killed the acid breath s3 by shooting it dead, but i figured they would do things by the book if possible, so the sniper hopped down and over to claim objective yankee for 4 points.
An extra turn passes off camera as i reposition the enforcers, stock manages a just passed break away allowing me to play a distract card on the spitter keeping him locked in place for the duration.
Stock enforcer managed to claim objective zulu for the win.
If the spitter still had coherent thoughts, i think they would be thus.
And finally a bit of a diagram for the last round of action.
Hope you guys enjoyed reading the report as much as i did writing it, or even a bit more perhaps, though unlikely you did as much as we had playing it... anyway
Really had fun with that one, it was close for most of the game, with lots of turn arounds and surprising rolls, rolling up definitely makes things interesting. Whenever i get to play again, i'll try to make another report, thanks for watching and happy hobbying!
Updating last post as I can, toddler keeps running into the officeand ddragging me out, apparently watching Diego is a team sport. Over halfway done now, hope to sneak the rest in before we do the cookout and fireworks thing.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok, got the last images and comments up, enjoy.
The small size is both convenient and claustrophobic. Its totally on purpose, to kind of induce that bit of panic from cramped quarters and so on. Further drawing on boardgames, there are counters and cards too, and no measuring. It was billed as a hybrid though its more of a small skirmish with a few BG elements.
Thanks! The game is relatively small, and seems to go pretty quick especially once you have the rules down. Makes something like playing through an entire 8 turn campaign in an evening/weekend totally feasible. Of course, there are supplements coming soon that will allow you to increase the size of the field, or even play solo against an ai deck controlled enemy.
Like the way things are coming along with the deadzone terrain, and the report of the game-play.
Also for a odd army with some 40k play in mind, I intend to mix my Sedition Wars Strain with the Deadzone Plague once I can get myself Deadzone, A highly adaptable and multi-mutative Infection wants to include all in it's path
DeadZone games look like they were a fair bit of fun, and the table looks really good in practice. When's W2 due to ship? August? Only a couple more months till I get mine, then.
You still need to get either a tiny scorpion or lipstick lips tattooed on that Nun with the assless chaps' butt cheeks. Then you should make that side of her your avatar!
Hahah! Perhaps you are right, when i'm feeling squirrely enough to try some freehand that small i may well take your advice
Deadzone was quite fun. Now that my sister has had her baby, i'm looking forward to things settling down for her and her boyfriend a bit (well as much as they can with a newborn around) so i can start popping back over there to resume weekly-ish game night. Not sure if deadzone will be their style or not, and i don't really care what we play, but we're gonna try it at least a couple of times.
I think they've said wave two is to ship this month, but people are really leaning toward the very bottom ass-end of this month, so US will probably be seeing it early august... as long as no delays, which honestly would be preferable if quality was in concern. Either way. Hopefully they send it by then or i'd just rather get it at Gencon. It should be here before then because they were talking about getting Mars Attacks orders at gencon (tentatively) and deadzone is due out a month earlier.
Speaking of Gencon, my tickets and badges came in, so that's nice, just have to keep track of them for a bit over a month. Yeah.. about 34-5 days left, starting to get a bit excited. Attending is gonna cost me too... Corvus Belli will be there with the new infinity starter set operation: icestorm, which is half lovely nomads that i want for sure, and half pan oceana guys who i won't mind having. Plus there's a getting started rule-set, though i think i'll still need to purchase the full v3 rules when they come out later on. They've got a couple of limited edition models that i'm not overly concerned about, but they've got some kind of bundle which may make the whole thing cheap enough to get me to bite...
This is all just at one table too, there will be hundreds supposedly, i mainly plan to visit the infinity table, mantic, reaper, maybe wotc to see whats up with the new D&D, and then whatever trips my fancy. Will also be participating in a learn to play: infinity, and one for kings of war, plus a 4 hour deadzone campaign woot.
So last weekend i arranged to trade off of a chunk of my empire and warriors of chaos stuff to get the current version infinity rulebook (which i'm currently devouring, pretty pretty pictures!) and the 3 pack of ghulam infantry, which are these guys:
They can be in the same force as my kaplans and are more or less standard infantry, the haqqislam version of my moderators. I quite like the grizzled looking dude with the knife, i'm gonna have to use some blood for the blood god and do some injuries, maybe around the face.
Sheesh though, if i get operation icestorm, especially with the preorder bonus mini and the extra two gencon specials... i'm gonna have a pretty huge infinity backlog, i've already got 20something, gencon is gonna tip me over 40 quite possibly. But come winter my dioramas will be finished one way or the other and i'll have extra time to work on them, so woot.
I'll do something eventually and post pretty pictures again, just been tired from work and crawled upon by the child after work
Stop posting awesome looking infinity stuff , I cannot resist much more. I can already blame YOU for deadzone . I looked at the V2 rulebook at the flgs the other day and they had some starter sets for infinity AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH
Give in! Come to the dork side! Buy all they shiney models!
Seriously though if you do pick up some infinity stuff remember that you're technically within driving distance for once in a blue moon gaming potential. And the starters are a good place to ... uh...start. They're priced to where you get 6 minis for around the cost of 4 individuals and they're a reasonable mix of the sub/faction in question.
I'll even have the getting started version of the v3 rules after gencon.
Wink. Nudge. Nah just kidding, don't throw your money around. I can be patient, the sexy models will wear your will down sooner or later.
Unless you really like pan-o, I won't necessarily be too attached to the pan-o half of the ice storm starter.
But if I got all cyberpunky again I'd be breaking out my old billy idol songs and stuff no one wants that.
I escaped my miniaturemarket run yesterday with no infinity models...but a mantic urban quadrant Grimdork stop doing this to me
Little sister...something something... white wedding... do your worst! And it's more manga/anime than cyberpunk to me.
Damn, a whole urban quadrant? And you say you don't want to buy an infinity starter huh... That's a lot of terrain, probably close to what i've used already, though my total dz order was a bit larger than one of those. You'll have enough terrain with that to crampack a 2x2' area, depending on how you build it you should be able to populate a 4x4 or more sparsely fill out a 4x6.
I think i'll be doing some infinity/deadzone crossovers, for when i want simpler infinity games, or more complicated deadzone missions. I may be able to use bits here or there to help out infinity conversions too... not sure. Maybe some arm swaps from rebs to my nomads and haqq, hell some of the rebs may make plausible lower tier haqq/merc models as it is. And enforcers will easily sub in as some kind of heavy.
So I got my mantic order, i took a couple of scale shots for the iron ancestor compared to an aobr dread, with the jotum in the shot to give an idea of it's size as well. I'll see about popping those up here soon.
Automatically Appended Next Post: So, as you can see, the iron ancestor is quite a bit less bulky when compared to a dreadnought. When you've got them side by side in person the IA looks to have almost half the mass, but he's nearly as tall.. i think they'll make suitable counts-as, everything the dwarfs have is short. It may be possible to get some cross-compatibility going on with the arms, they can be somewhat similar, though the dreadnought has bigger shoulders.
Bit blurry, whoops, but it helps to show the size difference a bit better and shows off the metal doomstorm upgrade. I am considering adding some removable tubes to the ends of the barrels to give it that classic rifleman feel. Also, check out that heavy hailstorm cannon! The jotum is friggen huge, i'm pleased with the kit given the cost of 3 for $40, and don't forget the 25% discount i got to throw at them! This thing is kind of an odd size, it's too small for an artillery tank, but it's damn near too big for a thunderfire, unless those are also way bigger than i thought.
That Jotum is big. I thought they were a lot smaller than that. You could always keep them off to the side of the map as an objective or something, if nothing else.
Theophony, you really ought to at least buy an Infinity blister and give them a try.
The jotums are big for sure, as long as i can get it to sit straight when glued, i'll be quite happy with my trio. I'll probably try to use the jotums and iron ancestors as thunderfire cannons and dreadnoughts, if i should ever try to play 40k at some point. The IA will get deadzone rules at somepoint, soon i think, and the jotums can always be objectives or simple scatter terrain as you say.
The guy just got the equivalent of somewhere around 6-8 battlezones, let the pour soul's wallet recover a little bit But we're totally here to support you if you do ever take that plunge
In other news.. Supply drop!
Here we have the infinity rulebook and ghulam(3) blister pack that i recently obtained from a fellow dakkafolk, i'm having a lot of fun reading through the factions and so on. Looking forward to painting the ghulam, the one with the knife is awesome but i like them all. One gets to be a doctor since they all have wp14 which makes them damn good at it for being basic infantry. They'll get to back up the Kaplans, and they'll probably get a dark grey/black color scheme to match what i'll eventually be doing for the kaplan scheme. I might have to pick up a couple of buddies to go with them, so my eventual future hafza can make them into a link team on occasion. I may look into cross compatibilitizing some of my deadzone rebs into lower tier haqq models too, either ghulam or whatever they most closely resemble.
The foamcore is for the doctor who diorama that i really need to get to... The box fan i consider as a legitimate hobby purchase as it's currently keeping my office at tolerably uncomfortable rather than hellish sauna temperature... it should do the same for the garage. The casting kit was $42 after the hobby lobby coupon. I haven't got anything ready to use it but... i dunno i've wanted to try it out for ages so i'll figure something out sooner or later.
Need to put some paint down today, but it'll probably have to be after the kiddo goes to bed.
Casting is fun, and useful. Do yourself a favor though and make your firs couple of casting projects simple one piece molds. There is a learning curve to working with silicone molds and resin.
Huh... that may not be a terrible idea Az.... but i'd need something that dried clear. I don't foresee myself doing anything outside of clear acrylic/whatever bases for a good while... but i could probably use some transparent bases at the 55mm size for the infinity basing changes.
I may not open the box for a month or two, or i may use it sooner, my hobby time is very unpredictable lately. I'll probably make some scatter terrain and or building signage first though, and i'll be looking heavily into things that fit the aesthetics for deadzone and or infinity.
Him, and his two brothers! But... I need to do some deciding on the final tone/shade of yellow to use across the board.
Looking forward to hearing what you manage to come up with out of all of that stuff. I hope none of the scythes broke, was a tad concerned about those.

3 of them broke, but it happens when you mail minis. I have already reattached them. I've been working on mordheim stuff this weekend, so all those empire bits have been handy.
I thought they might. I've always wanted to do something like mordheim so i'll have to live vicariously through you and others, at least the bits will be getting some proper use!

What about objective markers/larger scenic base/small scenery type thingamajigs? The point being something relatively simple to practice up on that you can still get use out of.
Thanks for scale shots on the Iron Ancestor and the Dread. Is the Iron Ancestor base that Mantic supply a piece of fibreboard? I still want to get a good few Iron Ancestor's but for the past few weeks have had a real itch to buy and paint a SM Dread...and this isn't helping!
Hope you get the chance to get some paint down soon.
Looking forward to see what you do with that casting kit, casting is something I've been looking into myself recently.
As for what to cast, how about making some more elaborate FF Rhino-conversion parts (maybe doors, banners, plating ect) to save you having to make each bit from scratch? PRobably not worth it for simple designs, but if you wanted something a little more detailed or complex, it might work out a bit less labour-intensive to cast rather than scratch-build.
@Az yeah something like that is entirely possible, probably will try to do some kind of space barrel or future crate even though i already have several kinds of both, just seems useful to have around. I'm also going to consider things that would be useful to make out of casting plaster, since it's considerably cheaper than casting resin seems to be... and for terrain, especially medium/large pieces, it probably shouldn't be too fragile to use. Definitely some stands built to receive some signs and adds, and maybe bits to hold up signs for buildings for their name/purpose, as long as there's a point to casting them... if the plasticard original is simple enough it will probably be just as easy to make more that way.
@ToT no problem, i think they can be found on the interwebs but scale shots can weigh in pretty heavily in my choice to buy something, so i try to make them available where possible. Yes, that seems to be what it is, all of their 60mm bases come that way that i've seen. Dreadnoughts are very chunky, blocky, and stubby... while they look a bit awkward they also look pretty tough and hard to stop if your just some poor infantry running around. I definitely like them, not sure if i'm going to sell off my dreads to buy more minis, possibly more dwarfs, or perhaps keep them and use my shiny new casting kit to craft and duplicate some bits to make the dreads more dwarfy. Like turn the 40k dreads into the irconclad ancestors or something
@Para that's not a bad idea. Especially since i'm wanting to make some dreadnought parts too. Maybe i'll make a more 3d version of the iron ancestor front to implement on my rhinos. Maybe i can make a stowage kit too, the forge father equivalent of jerry cans and shovels right?
Stowage would be a very fast and easy way to add some character to your models, and could also have use in objective markers, dioramas and general bits and bobs.
If the IA front matches up to that of a Rhino roughly, then molding a few of them is a cool idea too.
I'd probably need to make a larger version of the face from scratch, probably. When I get some quiet contemplative modeling time... I'll try to come up with something.
I like to cast things, gives you an amazing amount of freedom, especially if you sculpt something that you would like to have multiples of. Very time saving.
Can take a little getting used to to get the best effects, but ultimately ask a lot of questions and Dakka Dakka is full of people that can answer them.
Indeed, usually a lot of helpful folk about. I've already got a couple of (potentially) good ideas rolling around, so we'll see what comes out of it once i get some time.
Since i got some work done on m diorama i was going to take a moment to either get a few infinity minis up on painting nails, or maybe clean up my iron ancestor or hailstorm cannon to get them ready for paint... but i got distracted putting more work in on the diorama. I finally got the display portion of it past the 'idea that's hurting my brain' stage, and i think i can roll out some momentum and get it done soon, leaving just the painting of the minis.
Then i'll have a couple of months of no near deadlines during which i'll get back to deadzone and infinity minis. This next round of deadzone minis... i'm seriously considering spending just as much time as i do on the infinity models, to kind of test whether i'm painting the metal infinity minis better because they're better (or maybe even metal), or if it's because of the extra time/effort. Deadzone uses even less models than infinity on average so there's no point in rushing them out.
I should also be getting a cascade of new stuff (most of it already paid for!) over the next few months. I've got deadzone wave2 supposedly shipping some time this month, mars attacks hot on it's heels, with battle systems terrain supposed to show up somewhere inbetween those, or possibly slightly after, bones 2 showing up supposedly in september, and finally dreadball xtreme showing up maybe around x-mas? Oh and infinty's operation icestorm starter box i'll be nabbing at gencon, hopefully the only thing i spend money on there... but yeah we'll see.
I'm going to have to pick and choose what gets done and what gets shelved for a while, but i guess that's a first world problem, but i'll be sure to unbox anything that i get when it's relatively fresh.

Wow, that's one heck of an ongoing supply drop! If I recall, the Countdown to Deadzone section of this blog was around 50 models... Time for 'Countdown to DBX: 200(?) Models in 5 months'?
Haha I'm afraid its more than 200...... I was counting them up last night trying to fall asleep. Deadzone is probably around 150... got the 80 zombie deal 'cause it was relatively cheap, plus two factions and their boosters. The entire point of bones was to get a load of minis as well, so there's a lot there. Battle systems will be a reprieve since its just a bit of popping dense card out of its sheet, with a bit of clean up. I never counted up mars attacks but its a heavyweight too.
Though... really I mean, dbx is practically just an expansion to deadzone for me. I'm picking up some extra SciFi entities to use as civilians, objectives, hazards, and so on. At least one or two of the teams will be getting weaponized and drafted to either join or form their on strike team. What I'm really looking to do in terms if priority is more like...
Finish Dr who diorama by deadline, roughly by the time I should have dz w2 and mars attacks. Mars attacks may get priority, at least the base game, so I can play with a couple of people in town. Bones will never get priority, its just to sprinkle some minis in on the side for fun. Infinity minis will probably stay a side thing as well, even when I get ice storm, though ice storm may get localized priority among the infinity efforts.
I'm doing another diorama for November too, so that will be a background item until the date gets closer.
Not sure I've got the heart to do another todo or die list, just too damn many things to work on!
Bah i'm still here, just being slow/lazy about things.
Managed to get some negative hobbying done, tried to seal my paper ad walls with the same sealer i use elsewhere, kind of fogged them up, zombie marines one i cleared off in time but the official marines ad got a bit funny, i may try to turn it into weathering.. maybe. I also dropped the building knocking loose one of the wall panels by snapping the one clip and the hot glue seal, going to try to reglue it with superglue since more hotglue would be pretty obvious. Bah, it's going to happen, but negative productivity is lame.
I had an idea... anyone remember that floating asian boat-restaurant from the the 5th element? I wonder if i couldn't repurpose an old dark eldar raider to serve as such a thing. More or less a piece of set dressing for a gameboard, though if it worked, i have enough raiders to make a small floating bazaar Would either have flying stands under neath it/them, or i could rig something to attach it to the side of a building, something that looks like soft ropes or chains, but has a strong center bit that can hold it at a right angle without looking like it is.
Oh well, filing it away for later. The infinity crew over on the CB forums seems to think using my old wyches
as alternate, themed, counts-as der morlock gruppen
is a terrible idea and the wyches are horrible models that were terrible even when they were new.
I'm sniffing a little reek of fanboyism there, but only some, the models are probably too heroic in scale. Don't get me wrong, i want some morlocks, in a bad way. But i also like the oldschool wyches and was looking for a place to let them get some use. That's another thought that'll have to get shelved anyway...
I've got just under a month to finish that doctor who diorama so it's all hands on deck, full steam ahead for that project.
I'll keep you apprised of what's going on over on the other blog since, screw trying too hard, if the gift target wants to ruin the surprise that bad, it'll happen Latest tardis update.
Damnit, now i really want to pick up those Morlocks now instead of later Too bad, got a queue a mile long as it is!
For today all I did was slap a little paint on a couple of dr who minis, might dip them soon, will potentially put pictures of the results here as well as the diorama page.
I always have mixed opinions about the Morlocks. I want them to embody what's really messed up about the Nomad faction, the crazyness of modifications and whatnot. I think the one girl with the head-tendrils is a great example of that at least, same with the wolfguy. The other two I'm mixed about. Elf girl is cool but not extreme enough, and the other guy, while certainly modified, looks a little rough around the edges.
Yeah, part of the reason i keep an eye out for other suitable models is a similar feeling to yours, i like all four morlocks, but i wouldn't mind fielding a full force of irregulars just to use the morlock LT and have a wonky themed list sometimes, but i certainly don't want to play with duplicates. Elfgirl doesn't look like she was crazy enough in the first place to need to be dosed with meta chemistry, maybe if she had some killer tattoos on her face?
Yeah, maybe braveheart it up a lot, and do some shifting colors or something.
I think the easiest thing to do would be just paint her something other than fleshtones. A bright red skin like a morat, or neon green. Something that is shocking to the eyes that tells you she's been hitting more than a tanning bed.
Yeah lol. I love the morlocks thematically. I can just see them chilling out at moderator central or wherever, hanging out in the breakroom playing cards and video games, kind of like your stereotypical hippie/stoner/couchpotato, no aggressive emotions just really calm and laid back.. ''hey, bro, you spilled your coffee on my shirt and it's hot, let me help you clean that up man'' kind of attitude.
Then they call them in to a situation and flip the switch and they hulk/bane out, start foaming at the mouth, and just berserker charge any enemy in sight.. their handlers keep yelling over their comm lines the same orders over and over so they do what they should instead of bee-line into enemy fire cause it's the closest path to face-wrecking.
Gotta get some
Another side project i'm considering is to go through my bones 2 shipment in september, or whenever, and maybe check their catalog if that isn't sufficient... to cobble together my own uberfallkomando, like use a gnoll for one of the pupniks and a couple of other suitable man/beast hybrid critters, and then find a model to modify into the chimera.
It isn't that i don't like the stock models, they are amazing, but it's such a neat concept that i want to throw my own hat in for designing a different but similar group, and maybe to run a couple of them!
Indeed! I picked up the Uberfallkommandos because of that. I have yet to paint them yet, as I had promised I was going to try White Primer for once. I still have yet to pick up any white though, so alone they sit.
I broke the weapon on the Chimera. It was just so fiddly. She is an incredibly thin model, and I fatfingered it. I sorta fixed it though.
And they are excellent models. I was looking for some beasty things to use as well, but my big problem is the BIG problem. All the beastly models I find are just way too big for the rest of the scale.
As much as I DON'T think they need an update, I think that after seeing the new Antipode models, they could certainly go... bigger.
Those guys are huuuge. I really wouldn't mind a 'special character' pupnik on a 40mm base.
Hah, yeah that could be cool. I mean, it's all about entertaining people on the ariesta or artista or w/e it is tournament gladiator thing.. why not have giant pupniks. Could have a banukin uberfallkommando TAG equivalent, chimera riding on it's shoulder or something
I think once all of my kickstarters have come in, and things settle down to the point where i'm looking for stuff to do, i'm going to use deadzone scenery to make an arena for the aretista! battles, maybe i'll make it big enough to fit dreadball into it too... not sure. Then i'll have open license to make all kinds of wonky set-ups, gladiator fights and so on.
And yeah, he's a bit more charcoal than blue, but the one morlock really does look like beast.
@Tanakosyke22, thanks, i intend to. Once this dr who project is done, i have a smaller infinity based diorama and i'm done with them for the year at least. That one is all yu jing and merc infinity minis anyway, and should be smaller and less time consuming to build... though i plan to spend more time painting them all. Then i'll be just freely painting whichever deadzone, infinity, mars attacks, or reaper models i feel like painting, and i'll be laid off in the winter so whatever i end up doing for money will be less likely than full time so i'll have more time to paint
And yes, i'm very much planning to get Op:I, gonna be at gencon and as long as they still have them on friday, i'm gonna grab one. Maybe i'll get the complete pack with the bolt and penny too, i dunno if i'd pay 20 bucks for either since i don't have a direct use... but 10 bucks a piece is a steal for penny and not bad at all for the bolt... and i'll have a brand-new 7 model pan-o force ready for the bolt to join. Then the give-a-mouse-a-cookie-ing happens.. and i pick up one more of whatever the list is light on... basic infantry or maybe a specialist... and nab a squallo from the armored cavalry (since they are one of the cheaper tags monetarily, but still worth 100 points, still really good, and generic enough to use in a proper vanilla list) just so i can finish out a 10 model list at some points value
The nomad stuff will be great too, the spekter and grenzer will give my nomads in vanilla mode some more options and probably give me excuses down the road to pick up more tunguska stuff like the interventor(s) and the szalamandra tag... the auglaciles and mobile brigada will give me enough models to kit out a small kapu qualqi force as well along with my kaplans and ghulams... and of course the larger corregidor and even haqq sectorial forces will make getting the iguana more likely.... it's all a vicious cycle that feeds on itself and makes me buy more shiny shiny pretty models
Automatically Appended Next Post: So here's something for you guys to consider, perhaps render some advice...
I got the 4pack of knight sabers from ground zero games (gaming?, something anyway) a while back and Priss here is the one i painted, the others are ready... I went ahead and dipped her last night, though the highlights and washing she already had kind of did everything the dip would have so it was kind of just another top coat, and i sealed and based her in the usual way this morning. I wanted to maybe use them as infinity models but... they're really small. Priss here is the average size, one is smaller, one about the same, and one has a taller running pose.
I don't think i can buy that there's a human in the armor, so they'll have to represent robots.
But who has smaller robots like this? I could potentially use them for those doctor/engineer helper robots, nomads call them zondbots but almost every faction has them, they just let the doc/tech act from a distance for a slight premium.
Now that i think of it... the japanese army has something called karikuri or something like that, robots built to look like those old school stage actors with the masks... could almost sub for those but i'm not trying to start another army
Just read through your entire PnM blog (well looked at the pretty pictures and skim read )
I really liked the knight sabres models you had shame they were too small really. And I was wondering what happened to them until your last post.
After seeing the stuff you did with the the sedition wars models it almost makes me wish I hadn't sold off most of my stuff ( thinking of cleaning all that PVC makes me change my mind thou)
I wish they would do tank police tanks too I think I saw a metal slug tank in 28mm once but can't find it again.
The rust and weathering on your scenery looks excellent. And I think I'll steal the rubbish bun idea.
That's entirely fine, there's a lot of rambling going on here, especially if you read through the whole thing, i'm not sure i could even do that, and i wrote it!
I'm going to have to find some reasonable use for the knight sabers, be it infinity, or something else, if it was just the four of them and crazy mutating robots, that would work too.
Restic is kind of a PITA, but i usually clean a few models and paint them, rather than trying to do the everything all at once, i probably wouldn't have liked cleaning up the contents of the deadzone strike team pledge like some people seem to have done. I may be looking in to splicing the strain with the plague, and some other misc scifi zombies, to make a massive zombie doomsday horde... of doom... +2... for uhh, reasons.
I would totally buy tank police tanks, i would buy all the tanks, there would be none left, then i would have ALL THE TANKS! I think someone put a link to one of them in the thread at some point, but it wasn't quite what i was after.
Thanks for the comment on the terrain, it's pretty easy to do, and doesn't take obscenely long, but i like to think it gets the job done.
That video in your sig, it was... interesting? At least funny in parts, and that's what counts.
Nothing more to report hobbywise today, hoping to get some painting in tomorrow, but we'll see.

More than a whiff, if you ask me. But it's predictable in many ways if you're on the official forums. If you ask me, use whatever the feth figures you want to as whatever the feth units you like in any game, and don't let any mouthy melon-fethers on the internet tell you that you're not allowed to.

White, glowing, (usually) pupil-less eyes, and a selection of skin tones ranging from blue to dark pink. Hair ranging from green to white to purple. And usually some facial tattoos.
Googling "Night Elf" brings up a bucketload of bikini shots, DeviantArt-type images, and cosplayers - but despite all of that, I think it'd work perfectly with that figure. In fact, the WoW-style ears sculpted on the model makes me think the link is at least partly intentional.
I think the only issue with the Wyches is that sculpting-wise, the old ones aren't going to quite fit in. Now, I'd wager that the newer ones would fit in just fine. But, I think I'd at least like to see how they turn out before I render any kind of judgement rather than just outright say that they won't work. A paintjob can go a surprisingly long way.
As for Priss, you really nailed the colors on her. I bet you have a fun time trying to remove her from that integral base, too. The sculpt on her looks pretty good, considering the age of the sculpt. The real big problem though is that GZG designed her and the other BGC figures to go with their 20-25mm range. Without the integral base, she almost winds up looking like a kid in armor. I bet the Knight Saber figures would work well as Ghost Servants. I just wish their Boomers were bigger. I'd love to have some Boomers.
Oh, and what about Metal Slugs? Would you buy some of those?
Yeah, Az, if i were desperate to use them, i'd let nothing stop me, but staring at the comparison shot hard enough does make me cringe a little. Ironically enough, the new wyches are probably good enough sculpts to fit right in for the technical theme, but i don't like the way the look in comparison to the old ones. I'm not one to be bullied down, but i do notice the infinity crowd here is a bit touchier about stuff than some, like say the mantic guys.. unless you have anything bad to say then, feth you! Generally the painting and modeling folk are the mellowest, usually.
Night elf! Hot damn, this is happening. Probably my favorite alliance race, which isn't saying a whole lot as i didn't really care for any of them much. How times have changed, i used to love gnomes but never took to them in wow. I think the troll's lanky silhouette fits me better anyway... but night elves were ok, i even got one to level 20 or so
But seriously, the purple skintone, tatts, white-out eyes... synched up with the sword and pose.. the only thing she could possibly be better is a blood elf, but those aren't as cool or crazy looking. Nice suggestion!
@Barzam Oh man, all four of them were pretty bad, but i've had a lot of practice from the integrated mantic bases so it wasn't too tough. Thanks about the colors, i think she's going to end up the closest so far Lina is maybe too bright of a green. By ghost servants are you talking about the zondbots/whatever the other factions call the 3 point doctor/engineer's helpers? That was basically my thought for functionality too.
I think converting some boomers might be really fun, a lot of open license kind of like when you're doing various flavors and genres of games workshop chaos.
I somehow missed pretty much everything to do with metal slug, i think i played one of the games a few years ago, but it was a port or something... the tank looks a lot like Bonaparte though so i'm sure i'd like it!
Automatically Appended Next Post: I've made strides on the non-28mm miniature portion of the dr who project, i'll put something about it up here eventually, maybe just the completed work though as it's kind of boring right now.. especially if you aren't a fan. Pushing me out of my comfort zone which is good in a way, though i still don't think i'll be jumping to work with foamcore board again in the future...
Had a cool idea about the next diorama too, i think i'll be a bit more liberal with the pictures of that one here, for at least two of the three minis, one of them may be too much of a give away but i should be able to show off ninjas without anyone catching on I'm planning on doing one of them in a room, dark except for the neon glow of the laser/ninja sword, with the target outside the door, other directions covered by the sniper ninja who i will be attempting to blend into the scenery to represent the TO camo. I'm planning to put her back to a billboard or at least the service walkway under it... so it should be interesting... i'll also want to limit the viewable angles on her so the illusion of blending into the background is better enforced by only being able to see it from the correct/generous angles.
Aren't those little doctor/engineer 'bots called Ghost Servants? But yeah, those are what I'm talking about.
How on Earth did you miss out on Metal Slug? For shame. But, there's a Chinese company out there that made an unlicensed 1/35 plastic model kit of the Metal Slug. There's a few of them on Ebay right now.
I also saw that there was at some point an actual Bonaparte 1/35 scaled garage kit, too.

Ultimately, though - we're just talking about little army mans. It's like someone telling you that you can't use that Scibor not-marine in your Blood Ravens, or you can't use those Grenadier Future Warriors in your Imperial Guard. So long as they're a distinct unit, they'll be just fine.
I agree with Az in terms of play what you want. Just be a gentlefolk and explain what everything is to your opponent's satisfaction. I rarely get to play, and i just won't waste my time playing with people who aren't on the same wavelength, or feel i should play with my little army mans in a certain way.

I'm not saying I wouldn't allow them to be used. I'm all for proxying. I'm just saying that they're going to clash visually. A paintjob though will help to bring them in together. Hell, I'm proxying stuff for Alguaciles and whenever I get my Rangers Project mech, I'll be using that as a catch-all TAG proxy.
@Joe, that is exactly the kit I was talking about! There's also a second one based on the Metal Slug II. I don't think it was ever actually used in the games though. It's basically the same tank with lasers rather than gatling guns. Though, apparently the Super Vehicle 002 kit also comes with some kind of mech and a figure of Eri as a bonus.
I can find the cheaper one with the precious-moments style person peeking out of it on ebay, but not the nicer looking kit featured in the link. Just as well, i do *not* need to be spending even more money on models just now.
That's the 002, it's missing the minigun things on the sides. It *is* a kit though, which is a step better than that preassembled one i was looking at.
Which pledge level did you go in for on Reaper Bones 2 KS Grim? My brother and I went for the purple level stuff (though I really wished he'd gone for that big demon model as an add on- that guy looked amazing)
Well i just went in for the normal pledge, but then i crammed a little bit of everything on top of that... I got the core set, obvs, and then i added on a bunch of stuff i liked such as the giant godzilla/tarrasque thing, the kraken, the dragon diorama/scene, the first set of extras... too many medium/big things not to want it, giants and scorpion and smaller dragon woohoo, and then i got the scifi set twice... yeah twice. I overspent, the kickstarter frenzy got me i guess. I'm not sure exactly what possessed me to get the scifi set... a couple of cargo containers, lockers, well all of the terrain will be useful for sure. The bathalians look sweet and should make a good generic scifi monster/antagonist, as will the k...w... the other smaller four armed aliens with their guns... The IMEF soldiers look kind of cool, they should prove useful at some point, though i'll probably want to pick up a couple of specialists at some point now... the flying saucers might make an appearance in my mars attacks collection, the little grey aliens... well they could be quasi-civilians, like a rescue the science team objective, or they could be the badguys masterminding their own evil coalition of aliens... Use them as deadzone rebs, greys serving as basic troopers with the bigger dudes as grogans or maybe yndij, and the bathalians as freaking teratons.
The nice thing, is i managed to snipe an early bird shipping spot on the last day, so i should get my goodies come september if there are no delays
Whew, sorry guys, been working full tilt on the who-project. It is nearing completion, though i've still got a reasonable amount of work, i'm pretty sure i'll get it done on time.
Then things should pick up normally around here again, i don't think as much secrecy will be needed for the next diorama as it's less obvious, and i'll be doing other things in between.
Speaking of other things, we've finally gotten to see what's in infinity's operation ice storm, and i'm kind of getting torn at this point. On one hand, i can get the following, with a bit of card terrain, learn to play campaign, a few dice and such...
Spoiler:
+ + +
and if i get that box.. i'll probably spring for these two as there's a bundle with a discount:
Or, i could cherry pick models on my wishlist from miniature market and get these...
Spoiler:
Or something similar, i'm not 100% on the vortex, or if i need both riot grrls AND moiras, they may get intro brawls what with one set being sex-sells overly sexy nuns with guns, and the other set being barely controlled berserk-rage feminists
Or you know, i could save the money since i have so many models already. I guess the main idea is that the bundle will only exist at gencon, and my only chance to pick up the CSU merc, cosplay bolt, and maybe-but-not-necessarily the father knight, reverend healer, and alternate penethisilea.
I mean, i love all of the nomad stuff from the box, and the pan-o stuff is pretty amazing, and almost a full army in it's own right. But even with the equivalent of bulk discount, i can get a very similar number of models for the same money (140 for the gencon bundle, but there will probably be tax?) spent at discount online retailers, and i don't have to spend it all in one shot irrevocably. The main ''can't get it elsewheres' of the box for me are the moira and maybe the CSU, though having a boxed set ready to go and teach people how to play a game i would much like to play.. is not a bad thing at all. On the other hand, i could keep buliding my nomads, especially the bakunin portion. The starter set portion of both factions from icestorm will be available separately eventually, without the father knight or reverend healer, the csu may exist in the future or may just disappear forever.
Pretty much the same number of models for the money, it's just the question of does what ice storm brings to the table outweigh just spending the money on what i've been planning to buy eventually anyway. I may go nuts thinking about this and do some screen capturing and paintbrush shenanigans until i've got all 17-18 models in question available in one image so i can really think at it hard
The third option is to order the starter box from miniature market when it gets them up for preorder, i'd have to wait for it to come in, but i'm not in a lack of models to paint. I wouldn't be able to get penny or the bolt, but they were just extras anyway. Probably save me 20 bucks, but if i go to gencon with even a waver of a chance of buying icestorm i'll do it.. so i gotta figure it out before then!
Anyway sorry for wall of text and spoilers of a bunch of models i didn't paint. I'll have a legit update as soon as i can.
I'm afraid I can't help the deliberations. However, Icestorm is looking very, very tempting, even as a non-Infinitier... A whole new game I'll not get to play, terrain I can use for DZ, and some awesome minis. All I have to decide is that or going in for Dwarf King's Quest.
Yeah that's another consideration, i want to back DS/DKQ and funding that and getting icestorm at the current rate of income is questionable at best.
Not sure which would be more fun, 17 really neat models i'll want to paint, or whatever dkq comes with, though fantasy and somewhat less appealing from a just painting perspective (not to mention a bazillion bones coming). But dkq might be really fun.
Thinking about it more, on the basis that DKQ sweet spot will be running about the same price as Icestorm from discounters, I think I'm going Mantic. If DKQ is anything like their other KS, the value will be amazing by the end of it, so if it's a case of getting one now and waiting for one, I think DKQ will end up being my choice, simply as if I do want Icestorm, it's not going anywhere. I'm also intrigued by the rumours of it being playable solo, which means I'd get more use out of it than Infinity.
Of course, the Gencon exclusives might make Icestorm a better option for you.
Meh the gencon stuff I'll only get because they're moderately cheaper there. Though supposedly ice storm is just s 5000 copy run... we're still trying to verify that. The 6 models a side will become the new vanilla faction starters, eventually, though if the healer, knight, and CSU get released later we don't know.
I hadn't heard about dkq having solo rules, that's actually pretty intriguing.
I like supporting mantic, though it might be fun to actually get one of their products at retail for once lol.
I'm pretty sure co-op and solo rules were mentioned for DKQ, and if not, I think it'd still be easier to play a dungeon crawler solo than a game like Infinity.
I have found often with mantic kick starters in end up with. Bunch of stuff I am not interested in and a few things I am. Personally I like every sculpt in ice storm so if I was choosing between the two I would go for ice storm.
Yeah i'm somewhat leaning in that direction... it would also be somewhat nice to be outside of the design process for at least one major mantic product, and just come in later when it hits shelves and see how/if I am impressed enough to want it then. Fantasy minis are easy to come by, and pretty cheap with bones in existence, so i'm not terribly fussed about getting them early/extra/special from DSKQ.
The tricky part is do i get icestorm, which will serve as a nice learn to play system for teaching friends maybe someday if i ever get to play.. but get myself an extra army to feed and dilute the near-purity of my bakunin nomads...
Or do I get the selection of infinity minis i listed up above, get the same number of models, with option to space purchases out over time, and keep to just having the two factions i've already come up with.
Tricky. Icestorm really kicks my shiny model syndrome into overdrive, but you all know how much i want some morlocks and the uberfallkommando.
From purely selfish basis, which would you guys prefer to see me eventually paint?
So in true Grimdork fashion, the indecision rages on!
Here's a quick paintbrush job to illustrate my turmoil:
So, similar number of models... though i'm fully considering to drop the cosplay bolt and penny as superfluous, and if i did that... almost considering to preorder the icestorm from mini market which would alter the values. But who am i kidding, getting to pick it up in person is probably worth the extra 20 bucks if i decide to get O:IS so yeah nevermind. Even if i don't add penny and the bolt to the consideration, the bottom half is only 10 dollars more, so it's still a reasonably fair comparison.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I think a WoW based comparison is appropriate...
Do i keep gearing my ele shaman, and finish leveling my hunter alt... OR, do i respec and start gearing for enhancement, forget the hunter, and start leveling a warrior instead?
For fairness, the second option also includes a couple of vanity pets and maybe a mount, plus a complimentary stack of game invites (ice storm's rules, dice, terrain, and learn to play capacity, all technically ephemeral compared to models, but still nice and extant).
Penny would be nice to go with my akira aragoto bike gang ... you know... someday... when that happens... her and the new yojimbo.
I had a thought too, my remotes are cross faction and that Moran is corregidor anyway, plus QK, so I'd have 11 corregidor and 11 QK minis after ice storm. Reverend healer goes to Bakunin and the other two are good for 'nilla.
Whole pan o faction though... I dunno.
And I've had a thought about riot grrls... they're getting painted like knight sabers. Gonna happen, someday.
PanO is a lot of fun to paint! And you could always swap em' with someone for say... the Riot Grrls if someone is up for trades.
There'll likely be a lot of that flyin' around once OI drops. Though I have a feelin' most people will be wanting the Nomads.
(I personally want both).
And I definitely have been planning to do that with my Nomad forces, in terms of making them all wildly different colors, rather than following an 'Army Scheme' like with all my other groups so far. The Knight Saber idea is excellent.
stop posting pics of infinity . I'm on the edge of ordering it. I'm not going to gencon so no chance of me getting the limited whatever, but I'm really thinking of jumping into infinity......so STOP before my wife divorces me , cause I like her alot.
Do you like the look of the Pan-O forces? I think CC has convinced me to settle my resolve and come up with a solid working plan...
Gonna go ahead and buy Icestorm at gencon, still not decided about penny and the bolt (sounds kind of like a sitcom...) but probably just because 10 dollars for the bolt isn't terrible and it's a freaking steal for penny. Anyway... then i'll keep the delicious nomad portion, reinforcing my QK, nabbing the excellent rev healz, and a couple of extras for when i want to play vanomads... and then selling off all-everything else to recoup as much as I can, and eventually dumping that back into the infinity budget to nab those things i posted, at a slower rate, but eventually.
So yeah, i'll be looking to sell off my panoceana faction, probably the cosplay bolt, maybe penny (but later, so i can keep dreaming of the aragoto themed JSA list...), and probably the mat/terrain/dice and so on... maybe even the CSU while i'm at it...
If i don't fall in love with them...
But yeah if you like the Pan-O faction, Theo, i'd totally cut you a non-gougy rate.
Otherwise eBay is gonna get hammered, though the prices will probably be lower at first cause i won't be the only one. I bet the father knight and csu will do well on ebay in a year or so.
Well if I decide to get into the game I'll buy the starter myself, as I'll need both factions to get my brother in law to play. Plus I'll need the rules too. Thanks for the offer though.
I've struck it lucky. All I wanted was the CSU model (I have an odd need to collect LE Infinity models) and the Reverend Healer (this model isn't getting released outside of this box, and I'm planning a Nomad army in the future using only Observance units).
My brother is pre ordering Ice Storm. I'm chipping in (a fairly significant amount, but at least I'm not buying the whole thing just for 2 models) to just get the CSU model and Reverend Healer.
Yeah, that makes sense. Had to make the offer, i'm gonna be looking to offload half or better of the box so I can use those funds to buy other nomads stuff later on
@Loki, sounds like a plan then! The CSU is pretty cool but I think i'd rather feed her to the wolves to fund additional bakunin purchases. We'll see if my resolve holds once I've got the model in hand. Have you done some costing on this all-Observance nomads force? They get freaking expensive fast! Especially if you use the profiles they give you in the moira box... I think the hacker alone is 50 points... Kusanagi has the neat perk of giving you an extra SWC to work with but she's also 50 friggen points. Sin eaters are actually on the cheaper side of things in the 30s, but I found myself hard-pressed to make a list with 10 models under 300 points... Maybe if you stick a couple of remotes in there, the lunokhod is useful but barely cheap enough to mitigate the expensive observance units, most of the Salyut zonds are cheap and custodiers can do nasty things with an EVO repeater on the table.
Moiras have moved down my list a bit, since i've made such plans for riot grrls... but I still want to get the box eventually. I think that's what I'll have to do if I wanna try the full-observance thing... get either/or/both the salyut zonds box and the regular zonds box.
Have you looked into the cool things a triad of custodiers can do in a link team?
So, it sounds like the 16th or so should be an interesting time for the hobby blog. I won't have a lot of time but I think i'll have to try to do some really quick unboxings and at least some of my pictures from the convention. Maybe some neat new stuff from the corvus belli, mantic, reaper, and other interesting tables. Unless i change my mind again, I'll have ice storm and the basic mars attacks game to unbox (as long as mantic gets back to be and confirms they're bringing it) and I will hopefully be able to snag some pictures from the mantic table where they should have a lot of the new deadzone/mars attacks/dungeon sagas stuff.
I'm kind of hoping that mantic will have brought along project pandora at the ridiculous rate they were selling it at during their last open day, but probably not. I'll have to bring my mantic points along in case they have any of their mantic points goodies for which I might exchange them.
More on this later, I've still got a fairly imposing diorama to finish!
Yeah, I put together a test list using a Moira link, a Custodier Lt, a Sin Eater Mk12 and 3 Moderators. Hoping that the Healer is in the 35pt range which will make it a 300pt list. The Moderators are a necessary inclusion since, as you said, Observance units are pricey. I needed some cheerleaders. Plus it lets me build the list with the Bakunin starter, Healer, Custodier blister and Moira box.
Oh, well if we can add moderators then it's totally doable. And i love moderators
Perhaps if the healer is more expensive, such a list might have some count-as combi rifles on more members of the moira team to skim points. I also like the MK12 sin eater, though i've got the sniper too cause he's too neat not to have.
The advantage of getting it an GenCon is you have it early, you are guaranteed the CSU mini, and you can open that box up and possibly have some of the CB guys write some stuff on the inside cover of the book, or even do a sketch for you. They do that y'know. The disadvantage is that it will be $20 more than at miniature market.
I have a friend getting me a copy. If they sell out before he can get it, then I'll order from miniature market.
That's my plan too, Red. I'm hoping to get it in person, but if not, oh well i'll try to preorder before it's too late. The extra 20 bucks isn't so bad, especially getting to meet the folks in person. I hadn't considered signing of things, that could be neat.
Oh TDL, there's my devils advocate when I need one. I think the new plan to sell off the pan-o will allow me to ''get all the things'' though so hopefully it works out that way.
Now, just gotta wait out the two weeks before d-day. I was hoping to pawn off some models before the convention just in case i saw other cool things to buy... but I'll just have to do it later.

Well, the thing is, I kinda have valid reasons. I mean, one, yes, I'm a pervert and I like Cat-Girls a lot so it would be easy for me
But now, the seriously: How many armored humans have you painted so far? How many systems? Fraking many, right? Fantasy, Sci-fi, modern times, it doesn't matter, you have painted who knows how many armored humans or armored human zombies.
Now tell me: How many cat-girl miniatures have you ever painted? I'm willing to bet the answer is none or almost none.
Don't get me wrong, to me all Infinity factions are beautiful, PanO has those awesome knights and armors, but Nomads are so awesome because of the wackiness: Either they have fully armored dudes (one with a cat head!), mechs, sexy nuns with big guns, furries or koala / panda robots. It's a faction way too original not to love
