Picture of the upgrade sprue for the marines is in Dakka Articles. If I remember correctly there are two of these sprues in the upgrade box along with vehicle upgrade sprue in the kit. If you divide the bits among marines ie some have bolters, some chest plates, some heads etc you can make several squads from one kit.

Thanks guys.

Yes, plus I bought some BT bits online.

One BT chapter upgrade kit can upgrade 5 marines with BT torso fronts, (3 with tabards and two with BT iconed power armor torso fronts.)

You also get a bunch of extras like iconed shoulder pads for marines and terminators, BT helmets, weapons, backpacks, vehicle upgrade parts and odds and ends like scrolls, orbs of Antioch, etc.

This converted sergeant will be cool when I get some paint on him, metal legs from a grey knight model and the upper half is BT upgrade plastics with hand/weapon swap and left eye optic made from chopping up a scout visor.

The grunt is just a BT upgraded tactical goon with similar hand/weapon swap:

Standing right behind you...

Great painting! Though they're a little green for Black Templars, when i first looked at them I thought they were Dark angels.

Whilst an interesting conversion for your Sergeant I dislike the use of parts for him, make him look holier. And most sergeants usually have a Bolt Pistol and CC weapon.

Really nice highlighting! Getting that thin an edge is really tough to do, believe I know. Any tricks you'd care to share?

Have to second the highlight prop, it is hard to highlight black armor well, but you pull it off. Props also for base coating black templars white. It really forces you to paint the entire model.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks guys!

Yes, the bolters are Dark Angel's green.
I just couldn't bear to paint any more black on the little buggers and used the green to offset all the black armor.

I have given all my tactical squad personel bolters with the exception of the 3 guys with flamers simply to make gameplay more efficient. (If I ever get around to actually playing the game)
The assault squad will be armed with chainswords and bolt pistols, most likely, unless I decide to go with power axes instead of chainswords for some bizarro reason.

As far as the armor painting technique goes, I use a slightly modified version of the extreme highlighting technique: http://oz.games-workshop.com/games/40k/blacktemplars/painting/black_armour/1.htm

After painting a thicker strip of codex grey around the edges of the armor I paint over just the bottom half of that strip with a mix of black and brown ink and water, this makes a smoother transition from the chaos black to the final highlight of fortress grey which is a thinner strip along the very top edge of the armor.
The brown ink is simply to give the black armor more of a patina'd look like very old "blued" metal would have.

The only other tip I can think of to offer is to thin your paint, especially when painting a light color over a dark color and do a few thin coats to keep the paint surface nice and smooth.

More pics to come, after I sling more paint around.

In lieu of those awful DA green bolters, why didn't you take a half-step from that fantastic Multi-Melta and go with dark crimson Bolters?

Seriously, the red detailing and casing of the Multi-Melta looks incredible - absolutely perfect. If you were to tie the bolters in with a deep, dark red, the army and squads would be great to help drive home that weapons are red-tinged. If your Flamers and other Specials (e.g. Sergeant PFs) were also cased and detailed in Crimson or Red, that would give a nice color progression and really help identify which models are "special".

Thanks!

I like the awful green, it's my fave color.

The grunts get green, the special folks get red.

I was thinking of giving the converted sgt. a red and yellow striped bolter just for fun.

I think the red and yellow striped bolter would look good.

The green is unusual, but if you like it, then all's well!

Ok, once again my camera and photograpy skills have let me down, but I have taken a few pictures to attempt to illustrate my black armor highlighting technique:

First pic: Simply a thick stripe of codex grey around the edges of the armor.

Second pic: A narrower stripe of black and sepia wash (undilluted) applied to just the inner half of the codex grey stripe to make a smoother transition from the chaos black base to the codex grey.

Third pic: A final highlight of fortress grey on just the very edge of the armor and only in the areas that would be catching the most light.

"And what is wrong with their life? What on earth is less reprehensible than the life of the Levovs?"
- American Pastoral, Philip Roth

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.
