I think they are looking really good. I am just getting back into the game and have decided to start back up with Black Templars and this has given me a lot of motivation and tips on which to build my army off of. Keep up the good work.

Like a kid with a new toy, I just had to drag out the lightbox again.

I got two of this guy when I bought the sternguard veteran box, so I gave him a scout bolter and scope and demoted him to tactical veteran:

Very nice once again! I'll be posting my WIP bugs pretty soon because you've inspired me to keep going. If you'd be so kind though, could you use an editing program like irfanview to lighten up the pictures of this guy a bit? I would like to see more of how you shaded the eyes and bolter.

Tired of reading new rulebooks... Just wanting to play.

Thanks!

I did use PSP to brighten it up as I think I could use two more lights in the lightbox, but here ya go, brightened more and looking fairly washed out on my monitor:

ETA: I don't know if this link will work, but it's the same technique that I use for space marine eyes: http://oz.games-workshop.com/games/40k/spacemarines/painting/eyes/default.htm

one note about the eye lenses, all id say is nees a small(i meen minute) ammount lighter at the nose end, and ull have them perfect(and yes i know how hard it can be to do, nevermind frustrating when getting it wrong)

That's a much better picture. Now I can see exactly how you highlighted the bolter/eyes with differing shades of red. Thanks!

I'll do my humble best, Capt'n.

You're welcome.

The bolter is basecoated with chaos black then painted with a thin coat of scab red, then highlighted with blood red and blaze orange, then given a sepia wash in the areas that are to be darker.

Really liking the way these are coming along, and good use of the termie shoulder shield thing for the Marshall. The gritty look your guys have gives them an element of realism, which the lightbox shows off to great effect. I take it you accomplish this with a wash in the recesses? Making me want to paint more... and find the time to do so...

Yes, I assume that these suits of power armor are supposed to be very old so I "age" the white areas using thin layers of bleached bone and skull white followed by a sepia wash around the edges.

Good job on the marines, man. I like your painting style, as it gives the Black Templars this raw feeling, and that’s exactly what you should aim for. And your freehand fits in perfectly. Looking forward to your next update.

The eye of terror.

Your black looks really good. Did you spend more time on Vindicus, it looks like he has an extra layer of shading that the other troopers don't have, and he looks especially good. I play Black Legion so I know how much effort it takes to paint black so it looks shaded, but still black.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

willydstyle, yes I spent a total of about 6 hours on Vindicus trying out a different technique for painting the black armor.

I started out with white primer then painted all the armor except the shoulderpads a very dark grey instead of the usual chaos black, then progressively lightened the grey shades into smaller and smaller areas near the edges of the armor pieces.
I then used a combination of gryphonne sepia and devlin mud wash in many, many layers going from only one layer in the outer areas to many layers in the recesses and used straight black wash on the very recessed areas and did a final highlight with thinned codex grey and thinned fortress grey.

I did this to see if I could build a depth of shading without putting a lot of paint on the model and keep the surface nice and smooth.

Overall I was happy with the result but it was far too time consuming to do it again with black armor, unless it was on a special model. I think this process would be better suited to models with different color armor.

I am happy that you noticed the difference between this model and the others as I didn't think the camera captured the detail very well, as per usual.

The eye of terror.

Trust me, I know your pain. I have a bunch of Black Legionnaires that I put a lot of time into getting some nice shading, and a bunch that IMO look pretty crappy, and nobody ever notices the difference

I knew I should have gone with ultramarines.

I'd like to see more pics of your models, the two pics that you have uploaded look very good.

Well, thanks I think the shading on the farseer's red robes is way too subtle. My problem is that I don't have a camera, so I can only get pictures uploaded when I get to use a friend's camera.

Agreed, perhaps a brown wash in the shaded areas to give it more depth?

The eye of terror.

I actually like to mix badab black and the red wash, but that farseer was the first model I painted for my Eldar army, so I had not had as much practice with the new non-black color scheme

Trying yet another black armor technique, this guy was done using washes instead of a paint basecoat over white primer.

I also tried to keep the grey highlight paint very thin.

Thanks guys!

Gutteridge, check the first page of this thread where I posted some pics to illustrate the black armor highlighting technique I had been using.

This particular model is done in a similar fashion, but the basecoat is black and brown wash instead of paint.
