Been Around the Block
|
Alright many may have seen me around Warseer. I started a thread with the same name there and until
recently have shared my work over there. I haven't been so busy with them as much as other things
lately and haven't really been able to update it with any new progress. I do however have time at work
to view the various other forums the net can provide me and I would like to share my work with the dakkonians.
I started 40k in about 97 and have been collecting the Blood Angels from my first model. It took me ten years
to collect a full company (not easy for a kid who had no job) but in 08 GW released the full box set of a
company and suckered me into one. Slowly but surely Ive been working on them till about Dec when I had
to pack all my kit away. I know that there has been a drive to gain more work and users here and hope to help out.
This was the force as it stood when appoc started up. There are a few pieces missing but you get the idea
Here is the batch I am slogging through.
This was the old painting area
And this was the first marine I painted and posted on the site, which oddly this sort of thing was rare at the time.
But now thanks to many people barely holds his own in quality. Sorry my early pics were huge and sadly Im
only re-linking them. This was my rhino speeder I built when the original master of the raven wing came out.
I find it interesting something evolved out of the normal speeder to a similar theme. Though mine was about
armoured transport and rapid deployment rather then the stealthy and fast movement the scouts stormspeeder
seems to have.
Alright so since I was in fact building my second company and my first was the "2nd blood angels" the new one
needed to be Tycho's 3rd company. This meant I couldnt have dante flying around with the "2nd's honour guard"
and thus they needed a new assault comander.
and the new guys needed spiritual guidence

Thankyou both it has be very much a labour of love, while I have puttered with other
forces and collections I always want more angels and everything around them has
captured my love/obsession. Sadly I can no longer find enough people to fight me let
alone a table big enough. sigh... guess that means I have to build one, one day...

Thanks I used a really strong plastic rod to make it float and interestingly enough its
wobbles giving it a really funny floating effect.
Here is some more of the old;

Thanks alot Im glad that they have an old edition feel. Until recently the
marines of the 41 millenium have felt like they were machine made and
everyones matched no matter the colour or heritage. I'm not slagging people
just seemed that GW had less focus on the individual interests of chapters.
I would agree with you that my bases need improvement, they have often been
my weakest point and coming from one of the greatest basers out there, I should
hear that as a wake up call. At the moment its simple plaster and sand and a
couple colours, when the new guys make their way back to my desk I will definitely
have to look at them and try some of your suggestions. I must say what Id love to see
on your thread is a tutorial on your cool bases, and the painting/inking involved.

At the moment I aim to be able to finish a second company I don't think I
have space to do a chapter, but who knows I have 6 masters in my chapter and
want to pick up a couple of the new marine characters for when I play in codex form.
I like they're new captain. I have dreams of having a big bike force, maybe they'll
be from a reserve company, and of course I have nearly 35 scouts I think I may top
it off with time. I would love a 1st company. Im sure thats only in a 10 year plan
type time frame. My eyes are getting bigger than my head at the moment. Lets say
2nd,3rd company 1/2 10th with elements of 1st and a reserve company. I think
thats a good campaign force. I'm excited to dream what a Blood Angels 1st captain
might look like... Oh did I mention I'd love to involve a unit of each second founding..
no I guess I didn't and probably shouldn't... Don't think I haven'r thought of a baal
guard force. I've oggled FW stuff for ever and would love to do a group of desert
raiders with Angel red head scarves. Or even a Gore red desert rider creature.
Sigh I'm getting short of breath dreaming about such things.
Malika2 wrote:The further down we go the better the pictures get...

Im sorry to hear you cant see them all I wish I could help. Im glad you like them though
I like to think I am improving since my first group. I have done simple touch ups a couple
times and complete repaints but I cant afford time wise to go back and drag them up.
They meet my historical and useable standards

Thanks sorry for the vommitting of pictures, I'll try and go slower to catch us up to date.
Thanks I think my librarian is one of my best models to date. He just turned out really well.
I am always disapointed at how non real my stuff comes out (or did in the past) so
weathering has been one my biggest goals. I find it very hard to show weathering and
real life effects to brilliant re coloured soldiers.
Alright back to the show, Never able to completely focus one one red thing at a time
I was fed up with the garbage bases and flight stands that my speeders were forced
to sit apon. So I made new ones using my super rod. I increased the height so they
actually seem to be flying rather then floating at the same height as a tank. Why
would you make it fly if you dont intend to me completely mobile, I know now they
are easier targets but really you might as well get an attack bike if your going to hug
the turf.
So the jump boss progressed
I wanted to keep my devs all one heavy weapon so the 2nd comp got the lascannons
and the heavy bolters, and I moved the two plasma cannons and the multi meltas into
the third company. This opened up one lascannon spot and two heavy bolters. So
I built them with the new company materials and had them on my desk for a while
to paint with a marine carrying two drums of ammo. Well i painted them up and
realized when I collected the unit together there were now 11 models. I thought
maybe I made to many marines for the other half of the combat team. NOPE there
were 5 heavy bolters and I had no idea where the 5th came from. I had to do a roll
call of all 20 squads to find that the lascannon in the 3rd company 1st squad was
actually the one for the other devastator squad and the bolter was for the tact. I really
like that lascannon guy and dont want to dumb him down to the old stuff so I reassigned
him to another tact which luckily had an unpainted las in it. Then I just blued up the
repainted the hbolters head. when doing this all of a sudden it made sense why he had
a side arm and grenades when the others didn't.
Oh and my 3rd landraider was attacked...
I wanted inside, or better yet NEEDED to be inside to do this:
Here are two of my old mk 1 rhinos one for death company and one for random tactical
assignment.
Oh and what is that on the horizon? it looks like the call for aid was heard!
Tact two step onto my desk!

I am often sad more people don't know about comrade kal. I once posed the
question to a buddy that what if the lost primarch was not sigmar or some
junk like that but infact superman? fell from the sky, impossibly strong and
charismatic. Only he some how fell through time into a past for terra long
before the emporer him self created the primarchs? The story of Red Son
has many 40k primarch moments in it that I love. But back to task. The libby
is the first model I did with the new set of inks. I painted him like normal with
the normal gamit of blues and highlights. Then I did a blue wash, a black wash and
then a 1/4 purple wash. This led to darker richer colours which I still had to go in
and clean up, and re-highlight and again lightly wash blue. In regards to the BB I
fuddled with the idea of trying to convert it to use both variants, but doubt that will
ever get done. Until recently I didn't have a clue what scheme it was going to get either.

It seems to have that effect on alot of people. I get wow I need to paint more, or
I need more (insert type of marine). That is my attempt at a crusade pattern armour.
I would like to do a couple different types of armour aside from the usual beaky and new types.
As I get better at sculpting and converting I try more and more so we'll who pops up. I would love
find a box of old RT marines they were not around as much when I started as they seem to be now
I would like to one day find some but at the moment when I see them pop up at stores and online
people seem to want lots and tend to get a fair bit for them. So for now I will only imitate the looks
with what I have.

Alright so I got the new tech adapt for my LR done and eventually placed. I find it cool to
actually have a model inside the tank. Why else paint the inside, and it seems eventually
you end up with more of those torsos then you want to use.

The actual Sergeant and my unit marksmen soon came to be. The Serg was give some more
height to make him more heroic when lined up with his unit. I want some of these guys in
this company to look like vets of the Armageddon war 2 and 3. I added some honors from
their templar allies from the war. I also wanted to try something new with his helmet. I figured
it was a personal heraldry having the one wing above his brow. The sharp shooter was a really
easy convert, take both arms cut shoulders off, then hands. keep open one. find left handed
bolt pistol/plasma. Take hand from it, now flop the arms to the opposite side they were intended for.
Fiddle with them and the shoulders till you get the right shooting pose. Glue trigger hand on.
Then cut thumb off on open hand, turn it around so its on the right side of the hand. Bingo Bango
go the kneeling shooter doesn't look silly and is firing in the direction of his stance.

Here is the Serg in all his glory. He has a checkered stripe on his banner representing
the battles he has fought against the Ork hordes, and an award on his left shoulder
with an ork metal jaw symbol for his campaign on armageddon with the black templars.
His helmet has the white helmet gold wing for exceptional honours in a lightning assault
drop podmission. I did a little tactical arrow on his other shoulder and a bunch of pouches
for few cells powering his blue sun plasma pistol. Weathered and scratched he continues on,
stoic and proud tusting in his mens abilities. A red moon shape on his banner to represent
a battle on a space station. Battle of the Blood moon orbital defence.
and then the next couple in his squad each one painted in the hopes to not match another
model.
The Black helmed individual has show a great deal of faith and devotion to the learnings of
his chaplain leaders. He has been chosen by the chapter's chaplains to be one of the few aspiring
devotional leaders. His black helmet shows that he has committed him self to the chapter's
spiritual safety and hopefully be given the title of brother chaplain, until that day he must still
fill his duties as a tactical marine in the second squad. The heavy weapon's specialist shows
his designation under his company's blood drop, this is not a standard requirement just a chosen display
for tactical purposes, if the giant plasma cannon didn't already tell you such. The last guy brandishes a
polished chomed left arm. It was a peice of a suit belonging to a great vetran who fell in battle, his
body was recover by this marine and carried for two days of battle before being returned to the company
sanguinary priest. The master of arms gifted him the polished arm belonging to the Deathwatch vetran's suit
before returning his decorated shoulder pad to the Ordo's armoury. The belief was that his ancient hand
would even in death help guide his shot with expertise of hundreds of years of service and xenos hunting.
I stumbled apon this in a google search, looks good doesn't he.

Grey knights and and Dark Angels and Eldar, I think I tallied it at about 10000 points
then cant completely remember. But sadly the morons sold they're armies or forgot
to pack them when they moved. On the plus side I did pick up the eldar army that way.
They are just starting to get back into playing sad thing is one guy only is play if I do
his painting. (Rough looking paint jobs most) and the other tries to beat me (which he
can but I think in a year and a bit he's painted and built maybe 12 models from his
company. So his will neve happen. So it sits un challenged no one has the balls to fight

that well painted and Id have no qualms what so ever.
Got any plans to include any bigger stuff full hog Thunderhawk perhaps??I just love the way that you have
A:Assembled and painted 120 Marines I only get round to thinking about that
B:So varied so many different bits and bobs
C:So many little details its like look once twice three times you see something different
Im telling you now these would look right at home in Warhammer World no lie.

Got any plans to include any bigger stuff full hog Thunderhawk perhaps??I just love the way that you have
A:Assembled and painted 120 Marines I only get round to thinking about that

Heheh just cause I have alot doesnt mean I win heheh. If games workshop ever does
produce one in the 100 dollars area yeah its on my list until then
this is the closest I'll get unless I take another swing at it heheh. It is quite the task building
them all but thats my favorite part, I would just build models all day if I could.
I really love to sit and look and play with the bits. I find it one of the best challenges to have
to try to sit and look at piles and other peices and think abouthow I can make them
look like other models, and pictures. I am always up for a good challenge like that
iron armour guy. He has chaos marine arms, a backpack with simple twisted vents, and the bolter's mag is
only repositioned. The helmet which being the main detail was simply a chaos knight helmet from the old box
set I cut the horns off and added little bit of greenstuff to mimic marine helmets. I'm glad you like looking at
the force more then once. Thats what I like too, when I read white dwarf or logs online a good army has me go
and look again and again, I sit and try and place the bits or see how something was converted and I look at all
the details people put in their work. I figure I have to see my figures the most and if I get bored looking at them
why would other people want to see them more then once. So I try and do something extra or different or completely
special for each one now. I hope this makes a varied force and a work of art in its own. I try and set colour themes
and bits themes and use this as my connecting feature. The 2nd company was yellows and reds, with white eagles
and skulls. This is the main detail thats following in the 3rd company. In the 3rd Im trying to uses little yellow except
where it is suppose to be used (assault helmets) I have choosen to use lots of green details like wires, eyes, gems,
purity wax, power weapons. But I haven't made up my mind on plasma I like the look of blue and green, and think I will
vary that up. The 2nd comp has far less stucture with variety of coloured details, but alot of yellow. The goal is to have
varience even within the chapter. Like say the 3rd uses a specific wax for its purity seals while the second does not have
such a rigid preferance. Each branch has characteristics specific to them due to their history and leaders so why not have
fun comming up with it. Like My new company has lots of plasma's and Meltas. Where as the old had missile launchers and
Heavy Bolters. Oh well I blathered on for a while there.

Do you mean the one on the Iron Armour guy? the grilled mask? no thats from the last version of plastic chaos knights
from fantasy, I just cut the horns off. All the rest are pretty much basic marine heads.
Alright so enough with all the jibber jabber here is some pictures to look at. These are some guys I started to make when
I decided I wanted civilians/ local fighters for my own interest, I may try and make them into something with =I= munda
they'd fit in there heheh. I made them all out of dark eldar I have lieing around aside from the weapons and heads that is.
Okay Okay those aren't blood angels, remember that angel painting?
I decided the landraider needed something special

Wow that must have been a boring last post. I guess it needed more blood heheh.
Oh well figured that Id move along with a collection of force standing as it is.
I would like to get another Rhino done next maybe, and ideally maybe the Command's
Razorback. At the moment though I am also cleaning up my old unfinished models (not
to the same standard though).
