We'll start with the Rune Priest, prior to his primer coat.

Next up is the Dreadnought. He's still missing his CC arm, which will be holding an incinerated Chaos Marine. Both the Rune Priest and the Dread are going to be 2 of my entries in the Golden Bolter comp over at the B&C.

This guy is the test model. I'm incorporating a large quantity of mk IV, V, and VI armors in the army, and I'm using something similar to the old RT artwork color scheme, with some meshing in of current markings and insignias. My Great Company symbol is the Golden Wolf from way back when.

And here's an army shot. I'm working on getting the first 1000 points together, and still need to assemble a drop pod and a long fang pack with a third wolfguard.

I'm still getting used to the lightbox I built, so the photos still leave something to be desired.

I'll be updating this with my progress, hopefully pretty frequently.

Thanks for looking!

Nice green stuff work on the rune priest.

Some things you might want to look into before priming is the alignment of the staff and the pose of the free arm. The staff head seems to be a bit crooked at the top and the free arms join to the body is looking a bit off.

The test guy is looking great, nice colors and the painted shoulder pad is ace.

Wow...there's no point in me entering that competition now. But I might still do, just for the experience.

Your wolfies will look awesome, but what are you going to do with their left shoulder pad?

I really dig the rune priest. The runes carved into the shoulder pad add a nice touch.

@ Metsuri- Thanks for the CC. I checked and rechecked that staff head, but I'll take another look at it, because it does look a little off in the pic... it might be the angle of the shot though, as he's almost resting it against his shoulder.

@ s.j.m.- You should enter anyway! I've always been intimidated by some of the stuff that crops up in those comps, but the exp will be good, and they have random participation prizes this time around, as well.

Right now I'm not doing anything with the left pad. in the RT artwork (and minis) the Company/Chapter markings were on the right pad, with the left pad being studded. It makes more sense with my mk V and VI marines, but leaves me with a blank pad on my IV and VII marines, so it's still up in the air.

I like. Especially the rune priest. How did you carve the runes into his shoulder pad?

@ Grim - It wasn't too difficult actually; I took an exacto knife and sliced lightly to make my guide lines. then I took a scribing tool and scraped with that until I got the depth/width I wanted.

I'll probably try to do it some on the dread as well.

@ Yggdrasil- He was fun to make, and I wish I had made more initially. I've got plans for my mk V pack to have some runners, including a leaping MotW guy.

Running Space Marines for everyone!!! We should petition GW so that they include assault legs in all their sets!!

And indeed, nice take on the runes / glyphs, that's something I might be using in the future....

Thanks!

I am really digging the conversions, but on the test model I think the paint scheme you have chosen just kind of all 'blends' together. My suggestion is to add some stark contrasts.

Ideas. Not necessarily all of them combined:
- Black rim on base
- Make ground of base very dark or create some interest pieces on it that work with the grey armor
- Very bold yellow and black shoulderpads and kneepads (one knee on each marine)
- Single red or yellow stripe on helmet
- Black or red casing on bolter

Just some ideas,

I have had some second thoughts on the Bolter casing. Black might not be a bad idea.

The old art also calls for a yellow stripe on trooper helmets, which I had decided not to do. I might rethink that, so that the wolf isn't the only yellow on the model.

That might bring the model out more, while still keeping a more subdued feeling for the armor, which is what I was going for.

Thanks for the feedback

Here's an update, although it's not a whole lot.

The Rune Priest, primed, from a different angle

A Mk VI Grey Hunter in progress.

My Dreadnought primed. I rebuilt the legs and changed his power fist, as I don't really care for the standard one.

Thanksgiving should give me a good opportunity to get going on the RP and the dread, so I'll hopefully have more updates soon.

Looking good so far. How many points are you planning on going to with this army?

Right now, with the black primer, getting a good shot is t
tough. Friday is good weather though, so I'll lay out my basecoat that day with the airbrush, and since it's magnetized, I can move the arm for a better look

The CC arm is a standard CC arm, some plasticard of two different thicknesses, a little bit of green stuff, some guitar wire and some glass microbeads. There's a couple of small styrene rods I used too, but you really can't see them unless you look real close behind added wrist plate. I just wanted some pistons back there, since I'm a bit of a perfectionist. :p

In this case I happened to use the fingers from the AoBR dread, as they were shaped a little better, but it's all up to personal preference.

Right now, people are playing 2000 points around here, so that's the big goal. Currently, I'm trying to put together 1000 points painted before I buy the rest of the stuff I need for the 1500 point mark... mostly bikes.

beyond that, I'll just try to work my way toward Apocalypse size until I jump start my Deathguard army again.

Now, one hang-up I'm having is deciding on freehand for the dreadnought's banner, so any ideas on that would be noted and appreciated.

Would you happen to have a WIP shot of the CC arm? or perhaps a good picture of it without primer? its hard to see the details in all black.

Very nice work. How did you make the Mk IV legs? I'm working on a pre-heresy wolf force and would really like to add those style knee pads to my Mk IV guys

I was actually dumb, and pushed through the CC arm building so quick, that I didn't stop to take a WIP shot before I primed it.

I'll get a good shot with the basecoat on Friday though, and a lot more detail will show though.

Upon building part of the CC hand, I found that a CSM wouldn't fit without looking stupid, but I may still revisit the idea... we'll see. I really wanted to actually use one of the 28765 chaos powerfists that came on the sprues I've collected over the years.

@Nighteyez- That's not a bad idea! That might give me something to run with.

@Thanatos73- I used to make them by taking a set of Mk VI legs, cutting a groove where I wanted the kneepad to start, shaving away most of the shinguard above that point, and resculpting it to my desire with greenstuff. then drill an indention on either side, and add 2 glass microbeads.

However, making Mk V marines has shown me a way that I can cut all the greenstuff work out while producing the same result, by using a scribing tool the same way I did on the Rune Priest's left shoulder pad, so I'll probably do that on any remaining mk iv marines I build... I think I've got another 15 or so laying around.

Alright, small update... Here's the claw.

And with that, it's time for some serious painting to commence. I've got a Rune Priest, a Dread, 2 Wolf Guard, and 19 Grey Hunters to paint.

Well, it's been a slow couple of weeks, so not much progress, but here's some WIP on the Rune Priest.

Barring weathering and cleaning up a few armor plates, the armor is done and ready for freehanding. I laid down the basecoat on most of the bronze, as well as the wrapping for the knife sheath and force staff, and the leather is done.

The head is done, but I'm not happy with the hair entirely, so I may do some more work on it.

The backpack needs some work to bring it up to the same level of completion as the rest of the model, but I hate painting backpacks so I've been putting it off.

There's so many little things to this guy that I wonder if I shouldn't have done the dreadnought first.

Very Cool Indeed The CC weapon really does look cool.

I like the colour of your priest. You are doing the whole army this pure grey, rather than the usual 'powder blue' ?

Yeah that's the plan. I always liked the less blue tone of the wolves before someone botched the paint job in the early 90's.

So it's been almost 2 months since my last post... sorry about that. I've had a busy time, but managed to get the Rune Priest finished (you might notice a head change took place since my last pics) as well as the Dreadnought. They ended up being my entries for the Golden Bolter comp over at B&C.

I'm posting the same shots I entered the comp with, so they might not be the most interesting shots, but I'll take some more display-ey shots sometime soon... I took some of the RP, but some dust had gathered on him that ruined the shots, so I have to retake those sometime.

Thanks for looking.

Very cool blog so far. I noticed you changed the head on the Rune Priest...why? Don't get me wrong, I think the model looks great. The braided lock of hair on the previous head was a nice addition, however.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.
