Ok, well I have found alot of fluff and pictures of Ork Cities to start my Ork Cities of Death/Apoc board. The board is going to be 8 foot wide and 18 feet long with a defensive wall in the center. The Waaagadishu is going to resemble Mogadishu with all the tight alleyways, very limited LOS and tight quarters. Only a couple of streets will be wide enough for a Land Raider. A few is going to wide enough for rhinos and trucks. A majority of the board is going to be of mainly one and two story buildings and a few multi-story buildings which are the housing for Nobz. Each building will have a demolished building so as the battle progress the city will evolve along with the battle. The board will have the feel of the buildings from Gorkamorka since this not an captured Imperial world converted Ork, but a completely Orky World to start. I will post progress in this blog as more is completed. My gaming group has already have started to work on the first mission for this board. Here is the opening fluff for the mission:
Black Ork Down: The Assault on Waaaghadishu
The battle for the Ork held planet of Skarsnaga between the forces of the Imperial Army with the assistance of the Celestial Lions and the Imperial Castellans Space Marine chapters and the Grand Warlord Gorfang Thugsnik has been raging on the main continent for the last six months. Stompas and Reaver Titans, Space Marines Sergeants and Nobz, Lasgun and Slugga all have been laying waste to all that has come between then. As the fighting has started to draw near the Ork City of Waaghadishu, Imperial Commanders needed a detail scan of the layout of the city so a full scale and well planned assault could be attempted in order to take the city in the name of the Holy Emperor.
Up until now, all attempts to sneak past the outer walls have been thwarted by the alert guard squigs and Ork Kommandos lurking in the no man’s land around the city. Low flybys by Space Marine Land Speeders were repulsed by the Ork Fields and Anti-Aircraft Guns surrounding the outer walls. Not wishing to draw the Ork Super Heavy Walkers to the city yet, recon by a Baneblade or Titan with their superior machine sprits was not an option. So the decision was made to send an Imperial Aquila Lander filled with sensors and observers in order map the city.
As the ground crews finished readying the Aquila Lander for its mission, an extra member to the flight crew was added. Unknown to the pilot and the high command staff the main Imperial Army Commander wearing an officer’s uniform devoid of his rank and status climb onboard in order to get a firsthand look at the city. Strapping in the Imperial Command prayed to the Emperor for his divine warding from harm by the unknown threat that will be soon under his feet.
Climbing to just above the reported maximum altitude of the reported Ork force fields and anti-aircraft fire, the pilot banked gently to back and forth to give the on board sensors the best possible view of every aspect of the city. Every so often a lucky Flak Trukk tracer round would zip past the Lander but most were hitting their maximum altitude and arcing back to the ground harmlessly. The sight of the Imperial Craft over their city had set the Ork Boyz off like angry ants scurrying around firing what every they had no matter that the Lander of out of range. Feeling confident that they were safe from incoming ground fire at this altitude the Commander contacted the cockpit and identified himself to the pilot. Surprised and understandably worried that he had such a dignitary on board requested they return back to the safety of the airfield just in case the Space Marine Recon Elements were mistaken about the effectiveness of the Ork Anti-Aircraft fire. Scoffing at xenos pitiful attempt to hinder the Emperor’s servants from their faithful duty he ordered him farther into the city near a largest non-mek structure adorned with totems and surrounded by what looked like market place and a motor pool. Keeping his eyes on the altimeter and even nudging the Aquila Lander up a few extra meters in altitude for safety of his precious human cargo the craft moved toward the structure.
The commander moved an observer to the side in the crew compartment so he can get a good look at the multistory structure. The incredible amount of Battlewagons and trukks were scattered in a loose motor pool behind the structure was drawing every ones attention from the rooftop of the building. No one was taking much notice of the Orks on the ground firing up at the Imperial Craft, so when a group of Orks and Gretchen wearing backpacks ran out onto the roof and raised their weapons to the sky no one took notice. Puff of smoke and flame flashed on the roof top and the first rokkit zoomed by the pilot’s window leaving a greasy smoke trail in its wake. The pilot jerked the controls out of reflex as more poorly aimed rokkits flew by. The sudden movement threw everyone off their feet in the crew compartment. Getting ready to ostracize the pilot for his carelessness the Commander got a view off the rokkit climbing into the sky past the observation port. The Lander continued to juke but not able to escape because of the continued crossfire of Ork rokkits.
Warlord Gorfang Thugsnik, already angry that his game of squig ball was disturbed by the sky borne interloper over his city his mood was growing more foul every second because his best meks said that with all the teef he spent on those flak trukks that no ‘umiee flying contraption would ever get over the walls. Now it seemed that the ‘umiees were flying with impunity till he heard rokkit fire and laughing from the roof top of his building. Kicking open the roof door, furious that someone would be on his roof he saw his most trusted (and distrusted) Nob directing Ork boyz in firing rokkit launchas at the dirty bird in the sky and kicking Grots for not reloading the launchas quick enough. Looking up his bionik eye allowed him to zoom in and see the panic faces of the passengers and the sweat dripping off the overworked pilot as rokkit after rokkit zoomed by.
Click.
Whoosh.
Laugh.
Click.
Whoosh.
Laugh.
This was repeated for the next minute by each rokkit boy as they kept up their rate of fire. Click. Whoosh. Laugh. BOOM! A rokkit hit the right wing, clipping and skipping it into the right engine nacelle. The fire ball from the rokkit warhead caused massive widespread system damage to the Aquila Lander Machine Sprit. Warning runes lit up all across the pilot’s cockpit informing him that the Machine Sprit was dying quickly in his craft. Thugsnik threw his arm open wide and issued forth an ear splitting WHAAAGH! at the sight of the badly wounded craft slow sliding out of the air. All across the city the Orks picked the Whaaagh! and bellowed it themselves. Space Marine Scouts, hidden outside of the city, reported back to their Company Commanders that the ground started to shake from the massive Whaaagh! after the Aquila was hit.
Unable to keep the Aquila Lander aloft for long, the pilot called in mayday back over the distress channel and that it was a priority for retrieval of precious cargo careful not to broadcast whom the cargo was just in case the Orks were listening in and understood the message. Trying to muster all the power and lift left in the remaining engine nacelle and undamaged wing the pilot attempted to get the Lander turned around and as close to the wall if not over if it was possible. Whoosh. BOOM! Another rokkit slammed into the other engine forcing the Lander drop from the sky like a brick. A loud whine issued forth from the damaged engines, black smoke bellowed from the access panels and the Aquila Lander hit the road near the Warlord’s building skidding into a building. The mass of the Lander allowed it to pass through that building across an alleyway stopping inside the bottom floor of the adjacent building. Masonry and Ork Boyz inside of the buildings collapsed on top of the Lander leaving a mixture of black smoke and white masonry dust swirling into the street. Ork Boyz from the surrounding area started running toward the wreck in glee to get a glimpse the carnage.
Warlord Thugsnik knocking Boyz out of his way on his way to the crash site. Grots and Snotlings were already climbing over the wreckage putting out the flames with buckets of water with the Runtherders screaming for them to move faster. A hatch opened in the back and the crack of a las pistol resounded sending a Snotling flying back minus a part of its face. The Boyz started to rush forward but Thugsnik yelled, stopping them all in their tracks. “This ‘ere ‘umiee bird is mine and so is all ‘umiees inside! I want the ‘umiees brought to me alive! You get me you gits! Alive!”
The master vox caster rung out in the Imperial Command Center with the news of the Lander’s downing. While none in the Commander Center were surprised that the Lander was shot down especially the Space Marine Commanders conversing with each other about the futility of the mission. However, no one understood what the pilot meant about the urgent need to retrieve the special cargo. The Deputy Commander pointed to an orderly to go the Commander’s Quarters and inform him of the incident. Running as fast as he could, dodging formations, leaping over ammo creates and guardsmen being disciplined by their Commissars he reached the Commander’s Quarters sweaty and out of breath. Knocking on the door, waiting for the response, knocking again sounding off whom it was and why he was there. There was still no response. With such important information to deliver, he slowly opened the quarter’s door and announced himself again. Nobody was inside but there laid a bunch of rank pins and awards were resting on the bed. Puzzled by this since the Commander was supposed to be there the orderly voxed the Command Center that the Commander was missing. The Deputy Commander turned from his map that he was studying toward the image on the situation screen of the smoke rising above the Waaaghadishu crash site. Without saying a word both Space Marine Company Commanders nodded and left the tent to devise a rescue plan within the city and the Imperial Guard could come along for the ride if they so chose to do so. The Deputy Commander turned to the master vox and issued orders for all Regimental Commanders to report to the Headquarters at once because they have a situation.
Thirty minutes later…
Both Chapters Space Marine Strike Cruisers diving low into the atmosphere of Skarsnaga sonic booms following in their wake. Passing over the city of Waaaghadishu, the Strike Cruisers fired out Space Marine Drop Pods from both Chapters, sending them screaming towards the surface. While the two Ork Boyz assigned to guard the crash site from looting grots and Snotling heard the sonic booms of the Strike Cruisers it did not occur to them what was going on. They were talking about the excitement this morning and the Trukk races tonight. With a loud thud and a squish a Drop Pod landed on top of the Boyz. A slow hiss and the doors of the Drop Pod opened…
The Assault on Waaaghadishu has begun.

Thanks, I hope it will be. Kind of going OCD on my Orks. Figure that if I am going big with my army I might as well go big with my board.

How big will it be?
I would go totally crazy with this table and make it way more city-like than just a few buildings. Make tons of high towers, bridges connecting them, turrets everywhere. The lander having crashed through several buildings.
Check this out by the way!

I am looking for close to 50+ buildings. Since all the fluff has their buildings as small buildings and they build up as the richer they get.

I didn't know there was actual fluff material on Ork architecture.
I think you should definitely go for some weird mix between a a post apocalyptic nightmare, a mining facility, a hive city and third world country slums.
I guess that once a Ork world becomes more and more powerful there would be more Ork cities, capable of producing entire fleets and such. This would probably mean big towers, but with small building connected to them, making it as if the buildings are growing out of the ground and big towers like mushrooms...like a mould/fungus...very Orky right?
You might want to check out the graphic novel Deff Skwadron, it has a lot of cool orky stuff in there (including a Gargant factory).
EDIT: I just googled Deff Skwadron and look what I found: http://www.cold-moon.com/40k/Deff%20Skwadron/deff_skwadron.htm

Yep, the 'ere we go! book for RT, the 2nd Ed Ork Codex and Gorkamorka break down how a ork city is built. Alot of ramshakle, built with anything sturdy at hand. Alot of the more developed citys use mud brick, wood and metal.

Well, this is the first update of my Ork Table Blog. I have been searching for ready made buildings that look good, but affordable due to the size of the project. For special buildings or hard to build ones I will go with premade terrain. But so far I have spent $40 USD on test buildings from different manufactures and found them both of excellent quality but $20 USD for a building that I can't also get in a ruin is to much. So, heading over to Hirst Arts site was the answer except that for a single mold is between $20 to $40 USD. But being able to cast high quality brick will solve my problems of building this many building under a couple hundred dollars.
While mulling the idea of what mold sets to buy I was walking with my wife through Hobby Lobby and acting as her personal mule, I spotted something near the model area that made me stop and made me go:
Ok, so what made me so gleeful you ask. A brick making and castle building kit by Brick N' Build.
Picture of the package:
Here is what all came in the kit:
Most people would go "So what, you can make a castle from legos without the mess." Yes this is a total waste of the complete potental of this kit and some of the stuff that came with it I am tempted to send back to the company with a big " WTF!" attached but must not rant. Ok this is a starter box of course. I snatched this box off the shelf before some stupid soccer mom grabbed it and gave it to her grubby little demon spawn from a jolly fatman that commits countless counts of breaking and entering.
Well the box came with three bags of plaster for casting, a mixing bowl, the stupid bags of Elmers Glue (hmmm... tasty) and other odd tools. But the most important item was the brick mold that can produce 24 regular bricks, six smal bricks and window/doorway arch bricks. This little mold is nothing compaired to the size of project I am doing but it going to give some pratice on molding bricks till I get my hands on the Hirst Arts Mold from my friend and also direct from the company. Now, not only is this an update to the table but to tell other Dakkites that want to build their own terrain but do not want to break the bank.
How much would you pay for this starter kit? $50 USD? $40 USD? How about $19.99 USD and that wasn't on sale. I only spent $11.99 USD on it because I had an internet 40% off internet coupon (wasn't letting my wife use it on a $2.99 string of Christmas tree garland). So, for $20 USD and buy more plaster for $5 or $6 USD at a time people couple build up some good looking and solid terrain at home without spending those GW prices. I hope this helps someone out. Well, this is enough of an update for right now.

I am going to use the bricks to make the main structure of the buildings. Then I am going to use a light coat of plaster covering the outside of the walls. This way I can make the buildings look more robust and look like the Gorkamorka 2nd edition buildings. Also, it is cheaper way of building two of the same buildings with one of them a ruin. I can count out the number of bricks used to build the intact building so I have the correct amount of rubble for each ruin. The Gorkamorka, RT and 2nd Ed codexs and books have a very detailed accounts on what a permament ork city layout and style should be.

Wow, I absolutely love the battle report that your group did in the articles section. It'll be immense to see the same marine chapters assault an ork city!
All I can recommend for a build this size is lots of mdf board, gorilla glue and plaster casting if you can!

Though if you are building a lot of stuff (as it sounds like you are) you may really want to get some more moulds... as you will be waiting around forever to get enough bricks cast with the setting times of plaster.

I have one of thoes buildings. The look great but it is hard to make a ruin out of it. I have gone out and found a quick drying dental plaster. It hardens in the mold to the point it can be removed within 6 mins and dries completely within 30 mins. I got a 25 lbs bag of it for $40 USD.
I did think about making a template copy of the building and make many more copies since they are $20 USD a piece.

They are really similar to the Ork buildings from 2nd ed. WD Battle Reports. Stick one of those in the middle of a bright green board and it would be really nostalgic. What's funny about Ork slums though, that's how I always imagined them living. Perhaps they deserve more credit lol.

Build all the brick walls you want, check this out!
I would make the terrain a lot more industrial though, as if they simply bolted their entire city together with some nails and screws. Every vehicle kit out there (Imperial. Ork, Chaos) could be used, every bit you got lying in your house.
Don't forget to go crazy with adding spikes, boobytraps, gun turrets and so on to your buildings!
