Miniatures Gaming News wrote:Games Workshop Switches to 1/6 Scale Game
Struggling from sluggish sales in the recent economic downturn, miniature wargames producer Games Workshop has revealed plans to team up with a major American company to produce a hyper-realistic game in 1/6 scale.
Tom Kirby expressed strong hopes that this new game would appeal to a wider, younger audience: “For years, fans have complained about the high cost of building a Warhammer 40,000 army. We’ve listened to their concerns and come up with a game that anyone should be able to afford to play. From the moment they purchase even a single figure, they’ll be able to participate in exciting matches with their friends.”
The hyper-detailed, pre-painted figures are expected to be available for purchase from official Games Workshop retailers for about $95 US. Their production is being outsourced to an un-named American company which insiders say has extensive background in modeling at this scale. The figures are a bit of an experiment for Games Workshop, as they will have several points of articulation and a variety of wargear options that can be purchased separately in “Wargear Packs” and attached to the figure or switched out between battles. “Weapons, armour, wargear, you name it,” said project lead designer Jes Goodwin, who was pulled from current projects involving an under-performing line to oversee the development of this new game. “Our American partners have provided a lot of exciting ideas to us. Even the basic uniforms can be changed if the player desires.”
Part of Jes’s challenge has been to make the game more family-friendly than Games Workshop’s famous “Warhammer 40,000” game line, which features warfare, murder, demon-worship, and genocide as its main themes. Said Jes: “This game will not just feature battles; you can play other scenarios dealing with characters’ resource management or even roleplay complex interactive dramas.”
Early press releases suggest that the backdrop of the game features an ongoing rivalry between two main characters. Both are presently Inquisitors in the Galactic Empire of the game’s background, but have served in a wide variety of roles throughout the game’s backstory that will be featured in the game's wargear accessories. The protagonist will be a golden-haired character named Barbara, while the rival character will be a dark-haired Kenneth.
Kirby was optimistic about the direction his company is taking. “We know that our loyal customers may be shocked at first by this drastic change. Ultimately though, we feel any game with two characters has a lot going for it.”
Rumours persist of another game in the same scale geared toward the tournament audience. Nicknamed “Dash ‘em, Smash ‘em Dreadnoughts”, the game will be set in an alternate universe where wounded soldiers are entombed in giant armoured robots and then sent to battle each other in a closed arena. This game will be the first completely-balanced Games Workshop product ever, featuring complex dreadnought models mounted on the end of bolter-grip handles. Pulling the bolter-grip trigger will resort in the dreadnought delivering a devastating attack with its close combat weapon. Complete battle sets are expected to sell for about $290 US.

I'd buy that.

The proposed prices for these products are quite realistic, given it's GW we're talking about. And, by 8th edition, the rules will probably be as detailed as Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em Dreadnoughts.
