What are some things that make you lose hope in society?
I'll start us off with a couple things.
electronics completely taking over peoples lives, leaving them like zombies
music, a lot of music is just crap, and the lyrics will be something like:
kids being wimpy brats that get everything they want

Friends are like potatoes, if you eat them they die.

When life gives you lemons, make orange juice, and let everyone wonder how you did it.

98% of people like "98% of <group of people> thinks/likes <something>. If you are the 2% that <something else in contrast> copy+paste this into your sig!" type sigs. If you're part of the 2% that hates it, copy+paste this into your sig

Now its do your homework so you can watch tv/play video games...

People who make poor life choices and expect others to pick up their slack (looking at you US welfare system).

People on welfare and medicaid having more kids...

I rather like our society. There's lots of interesting things to look at, and do.

Are you talking about looking at Bewbs and doing the neighbor?
Sadly, that was my kneejerk reaction to your post Dogma

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Same here - I find people who complain about western society to be a curious mix of boring and childish.

Seriously, all you people complaining - would you rather be living in pre-industrial revolution London/New York/Wherever? Earning near-starvation wages and working 16-hour days in a filthy and dangerous workplace? For your wife to have around 10 kids, and for you to feel lucky that a percentage of them actually survive their first year? Leisure time? What's that? Holidays? What are they? Retirement? All there would be to look forward to is the squalor and penury of the workhouse, or a sudden death.

Life is pretty good.

People often confuse society with a few individuals. Most of us are ok, it's the occassional feth wit that tend to drag us down a bit.

My theory runs thus... If you imagine that 1% of the population are feth wits, you only have to pass 100 people a day, to encounter or bear witness to the actions of a feth wit. Yet the other 99 people were just like you or me and if you think about it, we could all gang together and give those feth wits a good kicking

Hey, don't worry about it - it makes a refreshing change from all the OMGLMAOROFLN000000BBZZZZORZZZ!!!1!!!ONE!!! -type stuff I see floating around the internet. It seems we (as a culture) are making a virtue of uncouth behaviour. The rising tide of anti-intellectualism is something which actually really worrying - there is a lot of pride in ignorance starting to take hold in our respective societies, and there are people who use this very forum who exemplify this.

@Shads - You should come to the UK - it's pretty awesome, and we have a gakload of castles... eh? Eh? Tempted?

Don't listen to Ratbarf, his opinions are about as intelligent and well thought-out as his username.
I've met quite a few North-Americans who live and work in the UK, and they seem to like it. My Uni course co-ordinator moved here from Texas about 20 years ago, and he LOVES it. But then he's a liberal Texan - that's got to be a fairly lonely existence...

Don't listen to him. In Australia we have... uh... Funnelweb spiders!

I mean, just look at the cute little guy!

(Fun fact: Funnelweb spiders are very aggressive and will latch on to you with their fangs. They can swim across water with ease and will actively chase you if you piss them off. Oh, and their venom is fatal to a fully-grown man in less than an hour.)

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Maybe it's the "copy and paste" sameness of North American suburbs & small cities that you don't like Shadow (?).

As far as "losing hope in society",sure things could be alot better, but as Alba pointed out, things could be a hell of alot worse.

When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.
