I have heard almost everywhere that people hate Ultramarines, whether it is on 40K sites or in stores. What I never heard is why. So why do you hate Ultramarines??

I actually enjoy seeing ultra marines. Brings me back to earlier years when I first started playin 40k. Nowadays it seems everyone does some ridiculous or over the top color scheme. Some look good, a good lot of them are crap.

I think that it may be that people see them as too common or too plain, but I could also be completely wrong!
Maybe no one likes the color? (I don't!)
Or maybe it's the attitude of most Ultramarines in the fluff--they seem to think that they (and their Primarch) are the only thing right. 'Course, that doesn't really seem to be unique to them.

Of Lieutenant Castle getting short and hating it, wanting 'Nam to last forever--

This thread comes up pretty often.

People don't like the Ultramarines because GW uses them as their promotional paintscheme - all Marine box art has Ultras on it. They also don't like Ultramarines because the fluff portrays them as the best of the best, and that every other chapter wants to be just like them.

Most of the people who "hate" Ultramarines and say "Only little kids and babbies and n00bs play them and ugh they're everywhere" are just 13 year olds trying to sound Internet tough. Really, I've only ever seen about three Ultramarines armies in person in my entire time in this hobby, and one was mine. It's just cool to hate them because they're supposedly popular, and raging against the machine is cool.

I like that band.
And I think they're in a lot of promotional stuff from GW because they have "Marine" in their name. Then, before that: "Ultra". It helps get the points across that they're awesome SM.
Oh, and GW may push it because it's (seemingly to me, at least) a pretty easy paint scheme for beginners/anyone.

Because everyone hates the things I like.

My favorite SM chapter is Ultramarines. The only thing I don't like about them is that they are pretty much the GW poster Child. Other than that, I like thier fluff and the Ultramarine books.

There is no legitimate reason 'why'.

The only reason people 'hate' Ultramarines is because of Tall Poppy Syndrome. They're popular, and are the consistent brand image GW has chosen to put on their packaging and promotional material, therefore they're 'hated' in a cynical attempt by people to appear non-main stream. Believe me when I say that if, 20-something years ago, GW had chosen the Blood Angels to be their core Chapter you, hurricane117, would be posting this exact same thread except the subject would be "Why does everyone hate Blood Angles?".

That last part is only recent, and is Matt Ward's (aka C.S. Goto v2.0) doing. Pour all your scorn on him for that (and for the atrocious Blood Angel Codex), not on the Ultramarines.

What H.B.M.C. just said is absolutely true.

I personally love the Ultramarines. They've got some of the most fleshed-out fluff among Space Marines, and they've got some of the coolest named characters in the codex (though Shrike will always remain my favorite). I also thoroughly enjoy their color scheme.

I do get sick of seeing them on every damn thing I look at. Every time I buy a box of Space Marines, there are more Ultramarines staring me in the face. That does get annoying.

But that's really all there is to it.

People hate the Ultramarines because the Ultramarines are the Space Marines GW uses to represent the hobby as a whole.

Tall Poppy Syndrome, and nothing more.

Oh, and Matt Ward's gakky writing. That didn't help. He screwed up the v5 Marine codex, as well as the v5 Blood Angels codex. Hopefully not irrepairably.

Did you bother to read what BrotherSRM said

I like my UM's because of the Greco/Roman Aesthetic, and blue's my favourite colour helps.
And you can use imagination while painting UM's you know

Oh my god, I just realized something.

Could it be so trendy to hate the Ultramarines that it's now trendy to not hate the Ultramarines?

WHERE DOES IT END?!

Oh, right, it ends with people disliking things for reasons other than "everyone likes them."

On a boat, Trying not to die.

How to paint ultramarines:

1. Assemble model.
2. Dip in mordian blue
3. Yell as the paint is dying "MY ULTRAMARINES ARE THE MOST AWESOME MARINES EVAH!"
4. Repeat.

Um.

Yes.

Then they'll look like gak.

Or you could paint them properly by priming black, basecoating Mordian Blue, washing with Badab Black, coating Ultramarines Blue, highlighting with Enchanted Blue, one coat of Skull White on the aquila (you want some of the blue to show through), three coats of Skull White on the shoulder trim, one coat Red Gore on the eyes followed by one coat Blood Red, drybrush Boltgun Metal on the vents, respirator, and boltgun. And if you wanna be old school, one coat of Red Gore on the boltgun casing followed by one coat of Blood Red. Wash and weather to taste.

Bam. First Company Ultramarines.

They can look quite nice if done correctly.

I've not been on dakka for too long but I have seen this question come up a bunch of times. I have never once heard a rational argument for the UM hate. I agree with the above posters on it being Tall Poppy Syndrome. Also, Brother SRM is dead on about UM armies not being as prevalent as people say. To be fair though, UM army density probably varies depending on your local conditions so some people will see them more often than others.
