Mine was when I was battling a friend and he decided that his psyker could summon a giant earthquake, and that whatever he touched when he swept his hand across the table is instantly removed.
Scary.

Your friend is either 11 years old, or a douche.

EDIT: And to add something vaguely relevant, I was once told that the space marine Tyrannic veteran rule also made Marines wound nids on a 2+ in CC

Back when I was 10 or 11 I played some 40k with my friend who got me into the game.
As I recall, he was chaos and I was Tau.
He thought because of some upgrade his chaos lord has that his whole army got a 2+ invulnerable save.
I didn't believe it and we had a big fight about it and it ended with me pointing out how he was wrong in his codex.
We were known at the local GW for our arguments in-game.

Well, there was this one game where my Orks were getting beaten up until my reserve rolls, at which point I had two stompas come into play from Juggernaut-Pattern Drop Pods.

Not really cheating when both of you were none the wiser, but funny still...

Mine was when I was playing against a Tyranid player for the first time (which was probably my 3rd or 4th game ever), and he told me that the Demolisher Cannon on my Vindicator could only fire if I didn't move at all. Obviously this wasn't true, but then it was my fault for not confirming that for myself. At first I thought he just probably didn't know the rules for Ordnance weapons since he's never used them, but after getting a little better acquainted with the guy, I saw that he would purposely stack his lists with stuff that would be most effective against the army he was playing against.

Not that I have a particular problem with this in general, but it was the way he handled (and still probably does) himself with the game. I'm a fairly open-minded person, and am fairly easy going when it comes to gaming. So when I lost (which I did pretty badly), I didn't get mad at all, but in fact I actually asked him what kind mistakes I made, and how he felt I could've done better. He simply said "You got into melee with me", and didn't offer any other suggestions.

Later on, I come to find out he did this with a lot of other players too, beginners and veterans alike. A mutual friend of ours also told me that he beat this beginner so badly once that he didn't even want to play the game anymore, and this was someone who supposedly was his frient. The funniest part about this is that when I asked him for a rematch, he always had a excuse for not playing me. Be it he forgot his stuff, or was just too busy, he avoided me like the plague from then on. Goes to show what kind of poor sport he is, but what can you do.

At any rate, he got his in turn when our said mutual friend did the same to him, but in reverse. They were going to play a game of Bloodbowl (a game which I'm unfortunately not well-versed enough in to explain further), and he told him that he was bringing a specific army to play with. So the guy (the one I played) brought a list to counter our other friend's list exactly, only to have his army beaten down completely by a different army that our mutual friend brought instead. From that day on, "that guy" didn't want to play Bloodbowl anymore.

Typical.

The tabletop image this conjures in my mind is awe inspiring, with the stompa sticking out sideways from a split open drop pod with Bloodcrushers mounted on Juggernauts riding down the side for no good (fluffy or otherwise) reason

A friend of mine back home insisted that he talked to GW, and for $20 you could make your own Chaos Marine chapter with whatever rules you wanted. His rules were that Terminators counted as troops. He did this for one game then realized it was a pretty stupid fib.

Gotta say... one would be that all vanilla marines are fearless...

One player I knew defined 'amphibious' for chimeras (such a pointless rule) as including rivers of lava.

Another is that an Avatar became invincible if it was shot by a melta gun (mistranslation- he meant it couldn't be hurt, but until he clarified I was like WTF!)

This one guy tried to convince me that Nemesis Force Weapon attacks were unsaveable for Daemons and instakilled them (completely ignoring their immunity to Instant Death). And apparently Grey Knights have S10 and a 2+ invulnerable save against Daemons.

Was he using it on a Grand Master? They are Force Weapons with +2 strength then, which does cause instant death... sort of?

Yeah, if he was using a Grey Knights Grand Master he was actually right. GKGM Force Weapons don't cause ID, they cause you to lose all of your wounds. Oh well...

I was playing a tyranid player who tried to say that every time he rolled a morale check he also got to roll for instinctive behavior. I don;t really know jack about the 'Nids, so I was gonna let him do it, (cause I thought rolling instinctive behavior is pretty bad,) but three guys near our table jumped on him for it.

Nemesis Force weapons cause outright kill, which in fact does ignore imunnity to instakill, as the wording is different.
Hopefully this will be cleared with the new codex, so arguments about it stop.

In our group it came from someone who didn't know the rules (and we didn't bother to check - not at first anyway). Not sure where it might have come from before that.

Played the Tyranid Kid, this little chunker who used to come up to our FLGS back in 3rd edition. Back when the Nids had that fully customizable codex, think it was 3rd. Anyway, he's stackin models on the table like there is no tomorrow, and when I realize he has more warriors on the table than I have Marines (no vehicles in my list, no termies or scouts). I ask to see his list as something isnt right. Turns out that he "thought" that the dash (-) right before the price of each upgrade option was a minus, so he was subtracting the upgrade costs from the base cost of each model. Most of his models were completely tricked out wiht options and therefore had negative points costs. In a 2000 point battle he prolly had 4-5k worth of bugs.

I wasn't that bad but back when I played 3rd edition nids for a while I got really confused by the whole upgrade thing and instead of using the base stat-line at the back fo the codex I used the one from the front and then put the upgrades onto that . Most of the people I played with were pretty decent about not making stuff up apart from one guyy who tried to tell me that holocaust (the GK psychic power) was used at the start of combat rather than at initiative 1.
