When I first started playing my friend said that if Marines dont move there bolters have dubble the range...needless to say I lost that game.

I had an interesting experience playing at VASSAL yesterday, probably due to some strange misunderstandings.

I played DoW vs. Orks, I drop a single unit of gants (first game with nids, found them unfunny. ) What he want to drop is the following:
Battlewagon with Boys and Mek
2 Trucks full of boys
A unit of Deathkoptas.

You see, dedicated transports didn't count (even if the rulebook says otherwise), he said that his wagon was dedicated to his Mek (he didn't explain why his boys was in there) and lastly, scouts overrode DoW.
The disturbing thing was that he always did that, he had played at GW tournaments where the judge said it was okay and that I was the first guy who had called him on that...

Rapid fire seems to be a bit of a problem in terms of figuring out what it means. I know that back when I started my Tau army, I would usually move and fire 15" with my Fire Warriors (since a bolter's 24" range halved is 12" rapid fire, we thought that it meant a 30" range halved is 15" rapid fire)

I played a guy several years ago who insisted that Dreadnoughts could leave combat in the movement phase, then charge back in the assault phase because they were vehicles and couldn't be locked in close-combat. Unfortunately....I was still foggy on the rules at the time and didn't have my rulebook with me, so I couldn't look it up.

Since he was fielding Deathwing and I had a primarily infantry army...Needless to say, I got annihilated

Yeah the rule was dubble that so 2 shots at 24" and one at 48", it was a little silly and im glad that he was mistaken.

One of the first games I played, it was my IG versus some Space Marines.
He told me that you could take multiple saves. So first an armor save, then a cover save and finally a invulnarble save.
Needless to say I lost, because I couldn't kill his terminators.
At that time I was like, 40k sucks.
Luckily I didn't quit there

LOL!

Hmm, if I take an infantry squad with a lascannon, power weapon, krak grenades, meltabombs and a plasma gun, the squad costs me -5 points. Or, to put it another way, a 50-man power blob costs me ZERO POINTS.

... my 1000 point list begins with me putting down my free 300 stubborn infantry models...

I've actually seen a lot of people make this mistake.

Asgeirr Darkwolf wrote:One player I knew defined 'amphibious' for chimeras (such a pointless rule) as including rivers of lava.

lol. I'll have to remember that one.

Rurouni Benshin wrote: he told me that the Demolisher Cannon on my Vindicator could only fire if I didn't move at all.

Holy crap, I swear, every other game I played when I started playing guard had my opponent "correcting" the way I used ordnance. I couldn't move and shoot it, I couldn't fire the basilisk in direct fire mode if I took the IF upgrade, I always had to state a guessed range whenever I fired ANY ordnance, I could only target things with IF that I had LOS to, it was insane. Thankfully, I was warned that nobody else understood how guard artillery worked and so I was iron-clad on the rules for ordnance. If I didn't, I'd have lost half my starting games due to my opponent's idiotic misconceptions of the rules.

As for me, the strangest fake rule I had pulled on me was someone who once insisted that when my squad moved down a floor in a piece of ruins terrain that I needed to make an armor save for all of my troops or take "falling damage". After a moment of giving him a blank stare, he withdrew his request.

I think many people have played with ID ignores armor saves at some point in their 40k career.

I don't know where it comes from originally, but I assume its just from misreading the rule on ID. Assuming that "Instant" Death means you immediately die, and not that you still get a save and if you fail, die. It's an easy mistake.

I've had an actually common one- that you can take armor AND invul saves for the same wound. It seems liek that at first if you skim the rule book, but you have to look closer.

Honestly, the two who make up rules the most are eldar and SM- dunno why...

When playing BFG with my cousin, I had my super fast super stealthy eldar consisting of one eclpise calss criuser one sqaudren of hemlock and a few other squadrens of eldar escorts cant rember what. He had his big lumbring ork ships mainy consing of a lot of bruteram ships some other escorts and an ork killkruza, anyway after annailating his fleet with basically three hemlock escorts he decided to reatreat with his one remaining ship, his killkruza and just zoomed off the board. Then he claimed that he'd won the engagment as I didn't kill his ork killkruza. The coward! Thats not how orks should fight!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
It was mainly down to his stupidity that I won this game using three hemlock. He arrayed his ork force in one big line, at a right angle to the sunward edge of the board, I just flew my Hemlock straight through his line, shooting as I went. As soon as his ships turned to face me I was already behind them, completely oblitorating them with salvo afte salvo.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And thats why I love eldar.

That after losing his last wound, Chaplain Grimaldus has to fail a LD check to actually die. If he makes it, he keeps on fighting with one wound, repeating the process next turn.

I wondered why the Black Templar player was so eager to throw into combat with the Nightbringer.

I think it was the very first game I played. My opponent told me his Storm Bolters could all shoot twice because their gun had two barrels.

Same guy later tried to convince me that his Power Field got to roll it's 2+ inv save on two dice because the guy was also wearing Terminator Armor. (2nd ed)

At the `Ard Boyz before this most recent one, had a guy Deep Strike in a Drop Pod that only had the floor and the doors, then set the Dreadnought on top of it. When the `Nid player went to assault the Dreadnought he was told he couldn't because the Drop Pod was in the way. Instead of calling him on it right there he assaulted the Drop Pod. Got several Immobilized resulted against it, but was told that the pod was an Immobile vehicle and thus ignored those results entirely. When I found out about this he was DQed from the tournament. Hasn't ever come back to the FLGS for 40k again. I think he was also banned from Magic night for cheating in drafts there too.

When i was younger before ToS, blocking unit cover saves and having to fire at the closest target (4ed rule). I blew up some tank or other 18 or so inches partially behind a unit of friendlies. By the old LoS rules it was a valid target (i think if iirc even by ToS it would have been fine, just not 4ed) but my opponent tried to make this argument of Perspective, how the friendly unit would conceal the entire tank behind it because the unit was closer therefore 'Bigger'. He tried to draw a picture and everything. Not exactly a huge cheat but i admired the pure desperation of it. This guy always made me roll to hit with ordanance as well, until he got 4ed Iron warriors of course. He would also use loads of points making his chaos rhinos av13 all round (don't think it was cheating but he only did it because my autocannons used to blow 'em up). In my more ignorant days i recall not knowing much about sweeping advance, just the 2(3)d6 part, and having a load of stormboys rampaging through unit after unit in assault, without getting shot.

That's right out of the Codex. If he loses his last wound, he makes a leadership check each round to stay alive with 1 wound. However, if he ever loses THAT wound, he dies.

What unit that can turbo-boost can also be transported? That is weird on several levels

jdjamesdean@mail.com wrote:Casting doom on my troops in my transport

Doom doesn't require LOS, so it's not too ridiculous that someone would try to doom a transported squad. In fact, is this even against the rules? I'm posting on YMDC now...

jdjamesdean@mail.com wrote:Casting fortune than turbo boosting

This one isn't obvious. You can't do it, but the order of operations isn't intuitive. Since you turbo-boost after casting fortune, it may seem that this is legit. After all, there's no specific rule not allowing turbo-boosting if you've already done another voluntary action.

jdjamesdean@mail.com wrote:saying null zone didnt apply because fortune overrided

Yeah, this one is totally cheese. (For those of you who don't know, Null Zone and Fortune effectively cancel each other out. They actually make you roll an invul save, then no matter what the result, roll again and accept the 2nd result.)

My first game my opponent told me that when I rolled weapon destroyed for his hammerheads that he got to pick the weapon, not me. Naturally I did a good job of wrecking his burst cannons.

He also played some crazy wound allocation shenanigans with gun drones and crisis suits, stuff I.m pretty sure he couldn't do like throwing all the battle cannon wounds onto the shields drones and claiming when they were destroyed the excess wounds were lost.

Back in the days of 2nd edition a person I was playing at a store said that his Chaos Sorceror on a Disc of Tzeentch could fly 24 inches across the board and still shoot his gun that turned you into a chaos spawn. He wouldn't let me read his Chaos book so by turn three I walked over to the one on the store shelf and read the entry. The entry said 12 inches. After reading it I conceded the game to him and quietly left the store. I don't play with blatant cheaters.
