Ahoy there!

This is my proper attempt at a painting blog. I made one or two before and they just didnt run smoothly but Ive now got most of my army painted up to the first level, which is Mechite Red and Iyanden Darksun over black spray, so it should be easy enough to build up from there. A few of my models are finished already and Im getting through the rest rightly so hopefully I'll be able to keep the additions comming! I just hate unpainted models and I have loads of them, so Im working my way through all my armys starting with this one.

For a quick insight to my style and preferences, Im going dirty on this one, and as much as its a brilliant technique in terms of skill, I dont like non metalic metals so you will see shiney glitteryness on my metal bits. I only varnish or gloss things that are supposed to be glass or wet and suchlike. I like experimenting with technique, textures, washes and the miniscule rather than the art and freehand but I dont have a great camera so I hope you will still be able to see what Ive done.

The painting process for nearly everything, is black spray, mechite and iyanden over the top leaving the recesses black, re-paint everything black that isnt going to be yellow or red, touch up the yellow and red, apply all metal colours and most other colours (lights eyes, cloth etc), wash the whole model with badab black, go over all the yellow and red again, then again with white added to the yellow and blood red added to the red, same basic highlighting principle for most of the other colours, then creatively wash metals with devlin mud and start working on the other mud spatters round the armour, finishing off with more highlights and dinks in the armour (using mithril silver), and adding some more wash in tiny dots and splodges in muddy areas. The bases are built up from a redend cathal brown then washed and built up using the same techniques, finished off with dead grass. Graveyard earth is my favourite choice for base layering the purity seals and cloth/parchment etc. I can tell you about specific individual things in more depth if you ask!

Photo's have been taken on my 5mp phone and with my 35ml SLR so far, some of which you may have already seen, but the final colage will be High def Digital photo's.

Hope you like!

Whole army as of 7th oct

Theres also 1 Assault marine missing as Im making a Master with a jet pack, and a plasma cannon devestator who's in about 7 bits.

Captain

I'll be changing the name on the banner when I can think of something good but I want to try painting it as fancy as possible.

Apothecary (rest of the command squad comming soon)

Dreadnought

Terminator - Just did one to try it out. Obviously the base isnt done yet. I'll do them all together.

A wee look into the earlier stages of my painting and basing.

Work in progress Librarian Merceano. Lots and lots still to do on that.

Hope that gives you a good Idea of where Im at and what Im trying to do. Just cant wait to get this army done and move on to the next which will be my Bad moons if I get time, or if I get enough money, my 2nd Dark eldar army of course!

Anyone else tried doing howling griffons before? Couldnt find much on them but Ive seen a few.

Cheers,

Newt/Adrien.

look really good so far. Pics are kind of poor quality but you can still tell they are well painted. Your bases really add to the model also. Nice work keep it up.

Fraking right Battenburg!! Its amazing stuff lol.

Cheers all for comments.

I probably should thin down my paints a bit chris but I like vibrant colours and Im too lazy to build up that many layers, even tho I take ages to paint stuff!

I thin them down a bit like on the pallette. How thin do you mean? lol

I like the mud!

I should probably mention that I didnt build most of these models, and a lot of them were painted when I got them, so its not an all out full on painting challenge, I just want to get them finished and still try and make them look impressive.

Working on the rest of the command squad now!

It's great to see someone painting marines in a quartered pattern, I've never seen it outside of the codices and White Dwarf!

Nothing much to report here other than that I got a pretty big donation there so I thought I'd show you what Ive re-arranged.

Have to do a whole load more marines now because I was able to take the AOBR marines out of my tactical squads and put them into the devestator squad as cannon fodder, leaving the good models for the tactical squads. I even had enough left over to do that for my crimson fists too! I also got another dreadnought!

Only new things really in painting is that I started the devestator squad but everything looks even more incomplete now that Ive filled the ranks a bit.

Heres the army now. (you can even see some of my fists in the background!)

And just to add more meat to this post, heres a close up of the command squad after all the 1st layer of colour has gone on and the non yellow/red bits painted over black again.

Hopefully more soon! I will try to get them all to that first stage, then I'll take another army shot and then from there in it will be a bombardment of much more completed stages.

I really do like these a lot and I'm looking forward to seeing them up close in person at some stage at Lisbon if you down at the club. The weathering technique is especially inspiring and makes them look like they are all already halfway through a campaign.

It looks like my orks are definitely eager to meet in the flesh on the table top at some stage in the future.

Yes, I shall meet your orks indeed in a crazy collision soon!

I'm working on the Devastaror squad now. Still just getting everything to that first level, a couple of steps before the first wash, then I will finish the command squad and get decent pics of that up. Just too busy to paint as much as Id like to at the moment.

Very nicely done. Interesting of note however is that I just got my Badab war book and the Howling Griffons in there also showed a color scheme of an entirely black power armor with only the shoulder pads being a quartered scheme.

The black rage is within us all. Lies offer no shield against the inevitable. You speak of donning the black of duty for the red of brotherhood; but it is the black of rage you shall wear when the darkness comes for you.

I love the color scheme, it is very original! Is the Dreadnought finished? Because he might benefit from some highlights.

Cheers all! Gig went class Frodo! yeeoo ye!

Yea I heard about that badab book thing. Black power armour with quatered shoulder pad would look class but I prefer the full job. Maybe I'll ust the black sheme for a certain type of troop or vehicle or something. Damn should have thought of that well before now but still.

The dreadnought is finished yea, I'll try to get a brighter pic of it but it possibly could do with some more highlights. Either that or a lot more dirt!

Really want to get a predator or a vindicator and another form of fast attack. Any suggestions?

Is that IA9 just new out? What is the whole Imperial Armour thing about, is it just rules for forgeworld stuff and a bit of background etc?

Definately must have a look.

I like bases! Gonna try and make them all at least a bit fancy. Hopefully I shall make it a bit more pic heavy before long! Must get back to painting my devestators here, got a game in an hour!

What I'm most impressed about is how neat the line between the yellow and red is. Did you use masking tape or something? Army looks really striking! Keep up the good work!

Used a bit of masking tape on the rhino but you havent seen that yet!

I actually painted a lot of it with a large brush and then used a standard for detail. I dont like using fine detail anymore because theyre too flimsy and I find it hard to be accurate with a flimsy bristle! But yea, using the flat edge of a medium brush gets the straight line.

Still painting the devestators up the the first stage btw! Keep getting blooming side tracked with all you can eat buffet's and suchlike.

Ah you can actually see the rhino there but I hadnt used masking tape at that point. Just thought of it the other day lol.

Yes!!! Update time at long darning last!

My command squad is now ready for its first wash. Got all the main colours down that I want to do for the mean time. Theres lots of other interesting things Im intending on doing in the 2nd phase of painting and highlighting such as blue glowing tubes on the back of the LC's and suchlike. Please done be thrown off by the rather plasticy looking texture in some of those pics, its a mixture between the models being painted before I painted them and the lack of wash so far. They are starting to take shape a bit but theyre still in a very early stage.

The yellow and red is just built up from the black, but some things like the rags, skin, bases, gold etc have more layers of colour mixes.

Hopefully I'll wash them tomorrow then now that the most time consuming part is over, I could have them finished by the weekend and I'll hopefully get a high quality pic of the captain and the apothecary with them!

Just pleased to be at least making progress on getting the army finished. Blogs are definately the best form of motivation! Cheers.

Wow man great stuff, the howling griffons have always been one of my favourite chapters, such a great colour scheme!!

Your lines are crisp and I like the weathered look of their armour.Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to seeing more (P.s. your army gets a small section of it's own in the new Imperial Armour 9 book).

Ok so this is what they look like with badab wash on them.

Bit of a better pic this time, think I'll take the rest in the kitchen too.

Having a late one tonight so I hope to get them all washed and at least a good bit of the next dry brushing and detaling stages done so stay tuned for that!

Wow dude, nice stuff!

Youve got a hell of a lot of models there! Hadnt even seen those before and Ive searched everywhere. Did you tag them as griffons?

I just used badab black over everything there then I go over everything again basically, merging the straight colours into the darkend pre colour. Still gor loads of detailed bits to do aswell and then I do further individual washes depending on what it is Im washing. Griffon sepia is a main one for the armour and things.

Got to buy a Predator or Whirlwind, (or both!), then Im pretty much finished. Might get some landspeeders or attack bikes but Ive got a Crimson Fist army too which is basically made up of everything I dont have in this army so it works well when I mix them on the table.

Just gonna stick on The Half Blood Prince here while I get the rest of these washes done! Why does facebook have to steal all my free time :(

Black, Iyanden Darksun (leave the recesses black(Takes ages)), Badab wash, then the next step is more iyanden, sepia then a mix of iyanden to white. Lastly I add more dirt!

Ok. Managed to get the other 3 washed and the yellow re-paint done, or whatever the terminology is. Terrible pic here but its far too ridiculously late to go and start taking pictures with full lights in the kitchen at 5.18am, so I will wait til tomorrow and hopefully get better pics of the others with the wash, and this one with the rest of the 2nd colour layer done.

You get a bit of an 'ah it doesnt look as gritty anymore' sort of thought when you start painting over the wash, but there will be an all over sepia wash to go on, then further smaller additions of badab black again as the model progresses. I think you should get the idea from this anyway. I like using the colour-over-wash to create specific intentional bits of wear and tear like the work on the knee there. Its also a perfect way to really get the recesses to show clearly, but Ive found that not holding back and just putting a good strong amount of colour on gets the best results, otherwise it just looks like you should have left it as it was!

OkGot basically all of that verteran done to the point where its ready for the next layers of wash, then its just a load of extra fancy finishing touches before he's done. Better pics of the other washed guys too. I have gone over the skulls on the other veterans just because I had the paint ready. Still got to do the purity seal and havent made my mind up about the bolt pistol yet.

Pretty pleased with the orange lense tho. Im going to be doing some white and ice blue Cadians soon all with grey weaponary and orange lenses so I thought I'd try it out.
