Subject: My first titan build (22 ga steel build)
|
 |
Hacking Interventor
|
I decided to try my hand at building a titan. I got templates for a warhound off another site. Since steel is my preferred media for creating and the lines of the warhound lend themselves to cut and bend, I decided to use 22 ga sheet steel and gas welding. I will try to keep this updated as I progress.

Ok, trying to see if I can get this figured out. This is the first foot, almost complete.

This is one complete foot and all the pieces (or almost all, no ram pieces) for the second.

2nd foot layed out.

2nd foot mostly complete. Still missing rams, toe tips and shin armor.

ooooooooooooh! Talk about heavy metal. And I thought the resin ones were weighty. Any Idea what it will weigh when your done? Very interesting take on it for sure. I will be back to see what you do with this. Good luck man, looks like your off to a great start.

All of the rest of the legs and pelvis pieces. I want to get this all put together before starting on the upper half (too many pieces, the start getting confusing).

Thanks. As far as the weight, not as heavy as you would think. 22 ga sheet steel is pretty thin/light. I'm guessing at about 4-5 pounds, but I will have to throw the pieces I have on a scale and get a better idea.
Ok, I got a chance to weigh the one completed foot, 9 ounces, so I am sticking with my estimate of 4-5 pounds.

Having never welded before, are the seams where it is attached rough? Do you plan on coating it on something to make it smoother? Its looking good, is it loyal or chaos?

If you truly wanted to make this an awesome titan constructed out of metal (or even more awesome, I should say), you would forego welding and actually rivet everything together. It would save you loads of time in detail work down the road.

I believe welding was last used somewhere in the Dark Age of Technology.
Rivetting would be both helpful in the long run for detail work, and also at least 1 more manly. Rivet gun beats welding torch.
Thats not to say welding isn't manly, its at least 3 more 'mans' than glue.
And a steel Titan wins the internet. *subs*

the welds are pretty clean on the seams (gas welds are not as messy as arc), where two pieces mate up they are more obvious. Also there are a few holes (burn throughs) that I chose not to repair to provide an appearance of battle damage. After painting I intend to take a torch and scorch/blister the paint around them to complete the battle damage appearance.
On the subject of rivets, I did consider it but the time involved would be truely prohibitive. Not only would I have to do way more rivets than necessary on the seams to make it look right, I would have to run rows and rows of extra rivets along fold lines to make every thing look right and by the time it was done it would end up doubling or tripling the weigh. Also trying to use 'real' rivets (as opposed to pop rivets) is really difficult on 22 ga steel with such small pieces.
On the subject of Lap dogs VS Chaos.........I haven't decided if it will be built "obviously" chaos, at least on this one. I do plan on a mate to it (can't have just one warhound) that I will do some special "custom" work on.
Thanks for all the comments and input

I thought about doing so but as this is my first titan build, I wanted to go pretty simple the first go around and learn. The second one should have quite a bit more ornamentation. Although I am considering using weld beads to do some "decoration" on this one too.

AMAZING! Have you thought about leaving certain parts, like, say, the head/cabin unpainted, so you'll have the best possible looking metal (by using metal!)? Could you post a link to your templates. I look forward to seeing this completed.

Latest update.
Pretty much all of the parts less head and weapons (three parts of a turbo laser on the right).
Currently weighing in at 3 pounds.
To answer questions:
Leaving unpainted.....I have been considering it, probably leave the weapons bare metal. Haven't decided on the rest, probably painted.
Oxy/Acetylene.......yes I am gas welding, I do both (not great at either) but with 22 ga steel I would destroy it with arc, plus I don't have to deal with all the spatter.
Thank you all for your comments and suggestions, I enjoy them all.

Great idea. I like the way it looks. I thought that you were adding a metallic base coat while you built until I read that it was legitimately made from steel...
It's kind of hard for me to wrap my mind around the concept of a durable model.

Thanks all. I am hoping to get in some welding time tomorrow (Sat), its finally getting to the point that all the small pieces are starting to come together into bigger groupings. I should be able to get the legs/pelvis assembly together if I get that welding time in tomorrow. I will throw some more pictures up when I get it.

Well, here's the latest progress.......still needs head and weapons.
Front view
Torso ended up slightly offset to the titan's left, didn't catch it until it was all welded up. grrrrrrrrr
Side view
Not completely happy with the rearward balance of the titan. Hopefully the head will balance that out.
Rear view
Again, you can see the torso offset.
Cod piece armor
added a little Chaos detailing as an experiment. Let me know what you all think.
