They're fine on scouts, but what kind of IDIOT would wear power armour, or even the awesome terminator armour, wich weights as much as a tank, to leave his head unprotected and just askin' to be head shot killed by a grot!
The worst thing is, that the higher a rank of a SM, the bigger the chances of him to be helmet-free ( WTF???)

If you don't like helmetless marines, don't model them that way. Beyond that, nobody really cares anymore.

It's the Grimdark. It's grim, and dark. Head shot is too clean for a setting like that. I would imagine a good scalping, but most Marines have shaved heads...

It's called plot armor in stories, and is far better than any table top saving throw.
Also, it could always be that they already received a hit to the head that damaged the helmet, so it had to be removed during battle.

Why is it any more acceptable on scouts to be helmetless?
Surely their helmets incorporate the same range finders/targeters a normal marine has and therefore they'd need them on just as much as a regular marine?
If not more since their helmets presumably synch with their rifles meaning a more accurate shot.

The faceless lack character and lose individuality when they look like everyone else. Hence Space Marine models which are personalities have faces. Try watching Black Hawk Down then watch something like Predator.
That's what it comes down to. There's no argument, you are right it's dumb to not wear your helmet but on a war gaming table it doesn't matter.
btw. The force field thing goes against the Inquisitor rules where a marine was at disadvantage without their helmet.

I thought that it was the Iron Halo that generated a small force field around the marines head? I know it has to be awarded to the marine first, but thats the only thing I can think of that would do that. Going helmet-less is pretty stupid for marines so I dont model any of them that way, plus I don't have a skin colored paint lol.

I am in complete concurrence with the OP, HOWEVER whatwhat makes a very good point in that a visible face gives the figure much more personality simply by default.
In my case, I'm making a sternguard sergeant that is helmetless, however in order to take him out of the realm of the terminally stupid, I plan on modeling a discarded helmet on his base that his been severely damaged by gunfire... specifically with ruined optics. In essence, the helmet saved his life but was rendered visually inoperable so had to be discarded.

QFT. People have been complaining about it since the first bare-headed space marine came out, possibly before then

Terminator armour has this (Index astartes), which I know for a fact. I'm not sure, but it seems likely that certain power armor suits would too.

As noted (possibly), helmetless marines exist for us to be able to paint something different up and to show some character, literally.
In 'reality', Marines would in fact keep their helmets on.
Unless they were loons like SW's trying to use their enhanced senses at times, maybe...

hell, it's about time. This is a ten-thousand year old dead horse that a) won't decompose, and b) will continue to be beat by someone who doesn't like the impracticality of helmet-less astartes. If you want satisfaction read the book Grey Hunter, wherein a veteran sergeant Hakon has half his head blown away by a heavy stubber. Those who think bare heads are foolish can simply copy and paste that line of text, set it as the tiled background on there computer, and be content for the rest of their lives that they were proven right. The rest of us will continue to enjoy our ridiculously over-the-top, automatic rocket launcher-wielding, little plastic men.

Why no helmet, well becouse someone finally realised how BORING it is painting 100+ guys that look exactly the same. So they decided to change it up a bit and as its a TT game of model meant to look great all painted up, thats really the only reason that matters.

Consider this, the artwork is just a propaganda since it looks like a medieval style which shows the victors and I wouldn't take miniatures as a example of supposed stupidy since miniatures are made that way to stand out.
Marines in the novels generally always wear helmets, expect for SW.

Painting heads rather than helmets = epic win
I've got about 60 Space Wolves (Scouts, Termies, PA dudes, and Leaders) without helmets. When I ran out of the heads supplied with the kits, I started sculpting additions to blank heads and now the extra 40 or so have individual green stuff beards and hair. Painting and creating characters without helmets can add a lot to your army.
Yes, it is tactically less of an advantage..... but so is foot-slogging compared to riding in a tank...

So true. + when you've been painting the same colour for armour after a while it gets really mundane. I think if all marine models required helmets I wouldn't bother with them due to this.

It's up there with the scout question.
Recruits are trained mercilessly with no expense spared for the right candidate. They get the training, the medical procedures, it's intensive stuff, only a few are selected, even fewer pass the training.
So why, just before they get the black carapace which gives them much better protection and allows them to wear power armour which gives them even more protection are they thrown out into the field with only carapace armour and no helmet?!!
