So i joined the flavor of the month, and purchased a bunch of Dark Eldar, to finally start 40k (been a Fantasy player for the past 2 years, playing Ogres and Dark Elf).

My army theme is a kabal that is living in Low Commorragh, so lots of rust, Industrial based bases, and so on.

For the event, i decided to buy a cheap "airbrush" from testors (those with a propellant bottle) and try new technique never used/needed in fantasy.

Stage 1 : Undercoat white. Because i think it gives more vibrant color....





Stage 2 : Painting the rust undercoat.





Stage 3 : Salting the whole thing. Yes, i decided to try (imho) one of the hardest technique to paint rust...


And since i had no clue what it would look like, i went with a negative image to give me a clear idea of what i'd look like.





Stage 4 : Removing the salt. A very annoying part, that i had to do over because you really need completely dried paint.





Stage 5 : time to break that white, and add some rust effect (MIG).





So that's where i'm at with my first Ravager. It's gonna get another round of rust tonight, and tomorrow i should start working on other parts.

Looking nice so far.

I'm actually pretty happy on how it turned out. I was so affraid the heavy salting would just make it look like... well... crap. I almost look natural right now.

Tonight i should be attaching the aethersail and the front gun. Still unsure on what color to paint the sail....

Well Its starting to look like the old bumper on my truck so you must be rusting it well.

I havent heard of this 'salting' approach, it seems just pour salt on the model airbrush over it then remove salt. Is it really that simplistic?

pretty much yeah. But for the salt to stick, you need to either spray it with water (what i did), or use hairspray

had to work overtime last night, so didnt get much done except the front weapon mount's rust, and the aethersail's. Still have to do the weathering.

I still have no idea about the sail's color, will probably go for a purple type, with some blue-ish pattern in it.

Not sure how I feel about it tbh. Your weathering technique is working great, don't get me wrong, just for me, it really doesn't fit the DE aesthetic and is heavily distracting from the details of the model. Just my opinion though!

i recommend adding different browns for the rust basecoat.

basically your rust basecoat and a lighter color applied with a sponge.

the idea behind the scheme is to represent my kabal living in Lower commorragh, after a fall from grace.

Still working on the detail of my fluff, but that's roughly the idea behind my army, which also explain why their base is gonna be heavily based on wrecked industrial.

I did try to add a tint of orange, but didnt seem to really work, brown really absorbed the bright orange. My next one are gonna be alot less dark brown.

I think it looks better where the white has more orange wash on it, makes the rust look a lot more natural.

Some progress made :
Finished the hull
Glued the undercarriage (painted just the brown i've been using for undercoat of rust)
Painted the Weapon post in front
Painted the Aethersail's post.
Started painting the Aethersail
Painted the sign in front. I tried a glowing effect, but the consistency of my paint kinda screwed it up... not really the best kind of detail to do it either i think....
Painted the driver's instrument...

Still need to work on that sail's purple, paint the weapons, the crew, and that should be about it... what you guys think?

another night working overtime, so i wont be working much tonight. I'm kind of puzzled anyway, i have simply no clue what color to paint the weapon... I dont want them rusted, as i think even if they are living in lower Commorragh, they still want to keep their weapon top notch.

Could you quickly explain the sanding technique?

Do you just spray it on the model (and if so, how does it holds that way on the model?), or add water, anything?

simple.

#1 : basecoat your rust color.
#2 : spray water on the model
#3 : apply salt. I've personally let it dry, and removed some after (otherwise it could be overdone and fugly).
#4 : spray topcoat
#5 : wait a good while until its completely dry (even if it seems, let it sit some more)
#6 : brush the salt off. might need running water (melt the salt, making it much easier to remove).

Ok, so you spray water on the model... Isn't there any risk to remove the basecoat?

Anyway, it seems to work perfectly!!! Will have to try it someday...

Well, the past weekend wasnt such a good time for painting i guess. First i was taking care of the kids alone, so that kept me buzy most of the day, and when night came, it wasn't that much better ; My white primer decided to crap on me, and start making very ugly patch on my minis, scraping most of my crew in the process. All they are worth now is paint scheme test. So i bough a new can, to prime the rest of my Ravager, just to realize that my airbrush's can is empty (bad fitting made it lose air i guess), so now i can't spray the rest of my vehicle. To add to the fun, there's some very bad storm coming around here, bringing snow, rain, and all kind of crap that makes my days even worst.


So i despite all this, i "finished" my aethersail (still unsure if i want to add something to it or not), and i started on my Dark Lance, hoping to make them stand out of the crowd, without looking like a clown.

I finally got everything i needed to start airbrushing again, so some more work were done on the ravager. I basically got the rest of the hull ready for some brushing tomorrow. Lots of work, nothing to show.

I also worked on my Dark lance. Quite frankly, i think i like how they turned out, but still debating if i should rust them out or not. I am also considering attempting some kind of OSL, but i'm chicken when it comes to do that...




Finally, i received what i ordered for my base (diamond plate plastic), and i started working on my bases. As i couldnt resist the call of purchasing Urien, i figured i'd try to make him a base, and see if i like it... Keep in mind its gonna be very dark, and very rusty. I'm kind of aiming for black rusted bases, to really help my mini pop more.

Like the base very much. Reminds me of my bases, except I like the thick tubing used as a foundation for the base. As for the Raider, it reminds me of one of those skimmers from Jabba's Sand Barge. The rust so far has came out nicely, good work!

I'll definately paint rust on the weapons, its on my to do list for the rest of the week.

A little more progress. Weapon platform are almost finish, i still have to put some more rust on them. I assembled the whole thing, and well, i'll let you decide....

i'll rust them a bit, not rusted out like the rest, but just enough to remove the whiteness of it.

Just one thing I'm quite confused about, if the ship is so rusty why aren't it more damaged, like some broken railing or similar.

Or have it just been standing for a very long time?

they've been hiding in lower commorragh (think of it as a gigantic hive)

Color scheme for my Warrior / Wyches. the white isnt finished, and there's still detail to paint (such as glyph on helm that will be green).

I didnt want to go that edge highlight route, but i wanted to see what i could do.

Let's see a pic of him by the raider so we can see how they look close.

here you go... not sure the color are 100% correct (still have all kind of problem with the camera).

Are you planning on weathering the troops too? It looks really mis-matched next to Ravager as is. Given the explanation of the down and out but on the rebound Kabal you gave, I would assume all their kit would be in equal disrepair.

I really like the scheme you've chosen on the Kabalite, very unique compared to the others I've seen!
