Game #1 - 2K vs Frankie's Dark Eldar

For those who don't know, Frankie (White925) is a very good player. He was ranked #1 overall in the USA according to RankingsHQ.com for a while at one point. Some of his recent tournament successes this year include the Contest of Champions (2nd), the Broadside Bash (2nd) and of course, Slaughter in Space (1st) where he beat out fellow Zero Comp teammates Reece (Reecius) and Christian (ChristianA, currently ranked #2 in the US on RankingsHQ and also winner of the Bay Area Open this year). Last year, Frankie got 1st at the Broadside Bash. He is co-founder of Frontline Gaming and will be going to Wargames Con with Reece later this month.

Also, Frankie was the one who almost beat my Maximum Threat Overload (MTO) necrons with his Nurgle Chaos Space Marines (battle report here). He was thoroughly trashing my crons, but through sheer luck, I managed to steal the game from him when it ended on Turn 5.

This was basically a practice match for Wargames Con. This is just 1 possible list that Frankie may be bringing there.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Mission: 3 Mission Objectives

Primary - Kill Points

Secondary - Have the most units within 12" of the center of the board

Tertiary - Have the most units within 6" of the opponent's deployment board edge

Deployment: Dawn of War

Initiative: Dark Eldar

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Deployment:

Spoiler:

Map of the terrain.

Frankie deploys Urien with wracks in the raider. Everything else will be coming in on Turn 1, with the exception of the scourges, who will be deepstriking.

I deploy nothing. My entire necron force will be coming in on Turn 1.

I choose not to steal as I want to go second.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Dark Eldar 1

Spoiler:
I bend down to tie my shoelaces (or something like that). Anyways, when I look back at the table, this is what greets me.

Everyone moves flat-out.

The sight of all those fast skimmers is somewhat intimidating....

Necrons 1

Spoiler:

....but it's also one that I can easily match.

I refused flank him to the left. Command barge Overlords (I'll call them surflords) more flat-out.

Despite Night-fight and cover, my shooting is quite effective. Although a couple of annihilation barges did fail to see their targets, I still manage to 1) wreck the left-most ravager, 2) wreck 1 venom and 3) shake the middle ravager.

DE: 0, Necrons: 2

Dark Eldar 2

Spoiler:

Overview of the top of Turn 2. Necrons use their Solar Pulse to make it Night-fight.

Scourges come in. They take a risky deepstrike to get within melta-range but scatter into impassable terrain. They are destroyed.

DE: 0, Necrons: 3

Frankie decides that he needs to go aggressive or go home. Vect and harlequins disembark and get ready to bring the pain. What he doesn't realize is that I plan to give him the pain (token).

The rest of his army repositions itself to get shots at my army. The shaken ravager moves back.

I believe only 2 of the 3 venoms (as well as his disembarked troops) see my wraiths. They fire and take out 2 whip coil wraiths as well as put 2W on my other 2 wraiths.

Ravager and raiders fail to see (or maybe the raider missed).

Frankie is taking a huge risk. He multi-assaults not 1, but 2 units of wraiths! You can say I was quite surprised by this move, but I guess when you're behind, you've got to start taking risks.

At least with furious charge, his harlequins will attack simultaneously with my whip coil wraiths.

The gamble is a dismal failure. I insta-pop Vect with just 2 successful wounds and kill all but 2 harlequins. He only puts a total of 4 wounds on my guys and doesn't even kill a single model. I break the unit and send them scurrying away, unable to regroup.

DE: 0, Necrons: 5

Necrons 2

Spoiler:

Things are looking bad for my opponent. At least he doesn't lose his ravager even after 2 sweep attacks from my HQ's. The ravager escapes with just a shaken result.

I go ultra-aggessive as I always do and sic my wraiths on his venoms.

One night scythes goes supersonic and moves 36" towards his deployment edge for the tertiary objective. My other wraiths advance.

The rest of my army advances, though slowly.

BTW, I forgot, but I Frankie immobilized one of my night scythes with his shooting last turn.

My tesla-destructors continue to smash deldar skimmers, taking out 1) the blasterborn raider and 2) another venom. Both the warriors and the blasterborns (Kabalite Trueborns) get pinned. Warriors also lose 1 member in the explosion.

I also stun a 2nd venom.

DE: 0, Necrons: 7

Here I kill a raider.

DE: 0, Necrons: 8

Finally, wraiths multi-charge both venoms and the pinned warriors.

Nothing is going right for my opponent as I kill everything in my way. Both units of warriors fail morale and fall back, with 1 unit unable to regroup.

DE: 0, Necrons: 11

Dark Eldar 3

Spoiler:

Ravagers back away from my command barges. Urien and wracks prepare to assault my wraiths.

Focus-fire from warrior splinter weaponry finally take down my depleted unit of wraiths.

DE: 1, Necrons: 11

Urien and friends then assault. 1 wrack dies on the way in to dangerous terrain. We then tie combat with 2W apiece.

Necrons 3

Spoiler:

Surflord sweeps a raider but fails to hit it. The Overlord then disembarks and prepares for assault.

The rest of my necrons move.

Shooting kills the ravager and some warriors, breaking the unit. They will not be able to regroup.

My Overlord then assaults but whiffs completely even though mindshackle goes off.

Wraiths charge and wipe out a unit of warriors.

The only encouraging news for my opponent is that Urien kills 2 wraiths and his wrack kills 1. I only manage to kill 2 wracks in return.

Dark Eldar 4

Spoiler:

Overview of the top of Turn 4. My opponent does not have much left.

Warriors continue to fall back.

My Overlord only kills 1 trueborn and they stick around.

Finally, Urien and wraiths whiff against each other.

Necrons 4

Spoiler:

I shoot down his last troops.

I then assault Urien with a 2nd unit of full-strength wraiths. He doesn't survive.

The Overlord then finishes off the trueborns and my opponent is tabled.

I've also achieved all 3 mission objectives.

Victory to the Metallic Dead - Necrons!!!

VIDEO BATTLE REPORT:

POST-GAME THOUGHTS:

Spoiler:
I felt bad for Frankie this game. It was another case of he-could-do-no-right and I-could-do-no-wrong. The dice were simply on my side this game as almost every DE vehicle I targeted or assaulted died (at least my command barges didn't really wreck anything). My opponent then failed almost every morale test he had to take for his warriors. He also lost Vect only after 2 successful wounds from just 1 wraith. Today simply wasn't his day.

But barring the dice, I felt that Frankie did make 2 crucial mistakes. The 1st was going 1st. He came in and then let me alpha-strike him by moving into the range of my guns. Also, by going first, he let me deploy to a flank (refused flank deployment) to deny him shooting from one of his flanks.

His second mistake was to multi-assault both wraiths with Vect and his unit. I knew that would be disastrous for him as he was moving into my whip coils. I guess he felt that if he had only charged 1 unit of wraiths, he would have wiped them out and be left in the open to get shot to death.

I like the shooting in my army. In this game, they were especially important in helping to incapacitate Frankie's transports. Without the shooting, it would have probably been a completely different game. However, my MVP's here were definitely my wraiths. They took out Vect and his unit, Urien and his unit, 2 venoms and several warriors.

Overall, I'm liking my shooty additions a lot. It helps to balance out my list somewhat. I'll probably be playing with this build until 6th edition comes.

Coming up tomorrow on p.2 - Wraithwing vs Reece's Tyranids....

This will be very good, looking forward to it.

Will Frontline be doing a Video Batrep as well? It's always nice getting the best of both worlds between their Videos, and your detailed written reports.

I'm hoping Reecius' dice don't crap out on him again, it seems like the last few games you two played against each other, his dice had totally forsaken him.

I'm assuming they'll tape it, though it'll probably depend on their workload (which has been real busy as of late).

I think they'll looking for some payback.

As Reece has said, his footdar hasn't lost to any necrons yet. I've played against them once with my grey knights and it ended up as a tie.

As for Frankie, he's a great general and DE is one of those elusive armies (at least in my area) that I think my crons will have trouble with (but not my purifier grey knights). I'm looking forwards to playing against his army which took 1st at Slaughter in Space.

As for the dice, who knows how that'll go. All our games so far have involved some crazy dice.

Both armies will most likely go toe to toe with wraithwing for a photo finish. Reecius I still have not beat, and his wraith lords will wreck your wraiths if he pulls off the avenger shield with harlequins ready to counter attack and lords being screened to deny lash coiling them. Add to that the scatter lasers that killed both of my demon princes by turn 2 by themselves...

Frankie's list Ive only played once but man it was intimadating when he managed to multicharge my wraiths with his Fnp wracks and leader. That game literally came down to not killing or breaking 1 flayed one who then repaired 7 of 15 as the wraiths got stuck for about 2 turns of both players combat in my deployment zone.

With how expensive it is to start a new army, especially with the upcoming prices rocketing, I dont think he should spend the time painting or money on dark dar until he perfects the list to how he wants to play it. Ive spent over $600 on rebuilding my Necrons and $200 of it will probably never be used.

Yea I was thinking this, but I don't think he has the models ready with out proxying most of it.

This should be good, the Footdars heavy support section or a fortuned Avatar are all good counters to wraiths.

Yeah, just going by the generals involved, I'm expecting some close games if dice isn't too extreme....or I just might get blown away by Turn 2. Can't really say until we play.

Scatter walkers sure are nasty. A guided unit blew away my doomed unit of wraiths in one go....though I did happen to fail an inordinate amount of saves that time. You can be sure they will be on the top of my target priority list.

One thing about DE I must say is that I don't play them often enough. I need the practice, which is why I'm looking forwards to beating....ahem, I meant playing against Frankie's tournament-winning deldar.

Zid wrote:Really reece...? No dark footdar?

I think the reasons for no foot dildar....ahem, I meant deldar are as follows:

1) He's got more experience with wtih the space fairies.

2) Practice for WarsgameCon.

3) Last hurrah for 5th ed. Deldar for 6th.

4) What he said below.

Footdar's going to be a tough fight. He's got a number of things there that can really hurt me. Oh well, guess I'm just going to have to make his Avatar and wraithlord punch themselves in the face with my Overlords and his war walkers can just go and eat some tesla destructors.

Yeah, I'm bringing my tesla-wraithwing build, though if we play at 1850, I'm going to have to drop 1 scythe + change.

I just recently was advised about "Reeces Footdar" and after seeing the list I can't fathom how in the world it rank so high outside of a godmode general or opponents underestimating it. I'd be extremely extremely interested in how that list plays.

A lot of it is probably on account of Reece being a damn good player and on account of the anti-meta aspect.

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

Well there in lies the confusion I have, the list I saw with 3 DA packs, harlies, 2 WL, walkers, avater etc isn't completely anti meta. The AT fire that would typically go on vehicles would go on the Avatar, Wraithlords, and Walkers unless someone just piled their list full of melta which the last 3 dexes don't rely on.

If someone ran headlong into the list they would be in for a nasty surprise, or if they got too close to shoot before the dragons/avatar were down. However, with target priority and shooting I can't imagine the list would hold up which it why I'm incredibly curious how it is doing so well.

I can only surmise that it's incredible generalship.

Three words, ruins of warding. For example; with most of the field playing GK at adepticon that advanced, he had a great match up later in the tournament. Early on the players start equal which means baring bad luck in pairings you have a great shot at trashing a casual gamer. Now because most of the top player brought GK.... there you go. Aside from RoW, fortune makes his units stupid resilient against poor AP GK weapons as well. Add the mandatory pinch oif luck and presto, you can win.

Also I have never seen an unlucky general win a GT that had decent turn out. Skill is necessary (Reece IS great) but that can be learned. With two good generals it almost always comes down to luck. Like game length, a cover save, leadership etc...

Hahaha, true!

@BlueDagger

Yeah, I get that a lot. No one thinks the army is worth a crap, which is one of the reasons why I do so well with it. People grossly underestimate what it can do.

It is an army all about synergy and combinations. The units on their own suck, but when used together become really good. I have bad match-ups, but on a table with decent terrain, I can fight any other army and win. Plus, it is my favorite army which I play a lot against a wide variety of opponents and that gives me the foreknowledge to be able to see a path to victory against armies that might otherwise smash by nuts.

However, like a dummy I forgot to bring my Footdar to the store today! So when Jim arrived, all I had were my Nids. Jim played Frankie's DE, and my Tyranids. I am uploading the videos now, should have them ready to post soon.

Thanks! But unfortunately, the space fairies won't be making an appearance this time.

They heard that necrons were coming and decided to take a day off today.

Actually, that's Runes of Warding.

Don't forget that the Avatar makes everyone 12" around him (I believe it's 12") fearless, meaning you won't break them anytime soon. There are a lot of hidden synergies and combos that most people don't expect....like a Fortuned Avatar is damn hard to kill, or good luck trying to shoot down Eldrad in a unit of harlequins with shadowseer. People who haven't faced this type of army don't realize this and will make mistakes that will be capitalized upon.
And to top it off, the army is pretty darn resilient as well.

Yeah, I agree that in most cases, the winning general will have some dice go his way.

Thanks. As a fellow wraithwing player, I encourage you to try different things (and proxy if you have to). My list is constantly changing. Now my assault-crons are becoming shooty again!
