A high school senior in the suburbs of Minneapolis is facing criminal charges after she allegedly pimped out a sophomore at a Craigslist-esque website called Backpage.com.
Both students are female and both are members of the cheerleading squad at Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, reports KSTP, the ABC affiliate for the Twin Cities.
Charges in the criminal complaint filed against Montia Marie Parker, 18, include promotion of prostitution and sex trafficking in the second degree.
The unnamed 16-year-old student told police that she became a working girl after a March conversation among friends and other cheerleaders. The topic was ways to earn extra cash. An unnamed person suggested providing oral sex to men as a potential solution. The sophomore didn’t take the idea seriously. Nevertheless, it was apparently discussed in some detail.
At some later time, Parker contacted the girl — first on Facebook and then by text. The girl told Parker that she actually would be interested in making money via the world’s oldest profession. Parker then asked for some photos. “Not too nasty but kinda cute,” the senior instructed, according to KSTP. Parker also wanted the girl to “show a little skin” and show off “different outfits.”
Using the photos, Parker then designed an advertisement for the girl’s services and placed it on Backpage.com.
The website contains a notorious adult services section that CNN has described as a den of coerced sex-trafficking.
On the afternoon of March 5, Parker drove the sophomore — along with two other females — to an apartment building. At some point, Parker told the girl, “You’re up!” The girl proceeded to provide oral sex to an unidentified man for $60 in cash.
A similar series of events transpired on at least one more occasion and the 16-year-old said she drew the line when asked to have sexual intercourse.
The 16-year-old girl left school early for the skin-trade outings. Also, in true pimp style, Parker allegedly took all the cash for herself.
The sophomore’s mother eventually found out about her daughter’s unexcused absence on March 5. She examined the girl’s cellphone and saw the texts concerning prostitution. That’s when she called police.
On April 4, reports KSTP, Hopkins admitted to her role as a sex trafficker. She faces 15 to 20 years in jail and a hefty fine.
Hopkins Public Schools released a statement promising that it has followed its own policy in response to the criminal complaint, “which includes permanently removing a student from campus.” The removed student is not named.
This story is at least the third school-related prostitution tale this academic year.
Just this month, Travis Lekas, a student at Nimitz High School in the Dallas area, was accused of forcing an unnamed 15-year-old female classmate into prostitution. Lekas, 17, allegedly kept the girl at his residence for three days, plying her with a cocktail of alcohol, pot, and prescription pills. Police said that Lekas may have also attempted to sign up other underage girls at nearby Bowie Middle School to his nascent pimping enterprise.
In February, a jury in Riverside, California found Moreno Valley school board member Mike Rios, 42, guilty on almost two dozen felony counts stemming from a prostitution operation. The litany of charges against the Democrat included rape, pimping, pandering and insurance fraud. Two of the prostitutes involved were underage girls. “He said he needed to raise money because he wanted to be something bigger in the district,” a woman named Valery testified at Rios’s trial.

If they were funny they should be. We, as a species, laugh at horrible things all the time. People were making jokes about the Challenger explosion before the end of the day. Gallows humor is a great way of dealing with some of the more ludicrous moments of reality.

Young 'uns are always a headache. Like the article hints, they just want extra spending money to support a lifestyle of clothes and partying.

They are not particularly careful due to a lack of life experience in general, which is why you find them doing stupid stuff like skipping out early on school and leaving your phone lying around unlocked where your square mother can find it and read your messages.

On a more serious note, why the feth would you continue to whore yourself out after the older cheerleader starts pocketing the cash? Unless she was taking notes from real pimps and keeping her girls drugged or beaten into submission I got nothing on that.

On being young, I think youth and inexperience should excuse a lot of things... to a point, mostly the line where felonies start being committed. You'll note these young ladies are well past that point.

Further less serious thought: So the school has to know who the three girls Parker was whoring out are. Like the student body population, it's a High School, a cheerleader walks in the door at 8am with a new shade of nail polish and walks directly to her first class and the details of the exact shade will beat her to the class room, I'm wondering how badly this is gonna follow the three "working" girls.

Well most likely they'll have to change schools, probably to a school in an entirely different district. And since the news has gone national, I'd imagine hiding from this will be extremely difficult.

I feel very sorry for the girls in question.

Ahtman: Gallows humour is appropriate when it effects you or your loved ones. When it effects someone you've never met, it's something different, in my opinion. But whatever. I'm sure you can find a specific counter example to show why I'm being ridiculous. I found this story upsetting and the reaction to it even more so.

This will follow them for the rest of their lives. Its a terrible thing but im not sure whats scarier-the fact this happened or the fact im no longer scared by it.

I'd imagine that the victim would have to change schools, but as a juvenile her identity is likely to remain protected by the courts

That is probably the worst limitation on gallows humour I have heard, and rarely one seen played out. Hardly anyone knew the people on the Challenger but that didn't stop people from making jokes after the explosion as a way to deal with the tragedy, and this isn't even coming close to being on the same scale as that. People joke about terrible things, and have done so for about as long as we have had language.

I wouldn't say you are being ridiculous. A bit haughty (i.e. I didn't find the humor so no one should, and I should chastise them) perhaps, and a bit priggish as well. It also seems very arbitrary considering the amount of dark humor that gets tossed around here on a daily basis. Even then, looking at the jokes made we haven't even begun to stray into black humor yet, we are still in the lighter shades of grey. If we went dark think of all the monocles you would have to replace!

Why? They made their own choice, they continued providing sexual services after the first occasion and at least one girl quit after she was asked to do something that she didn't want to do. Yes they were too young and yes it wasn't the best decision but in reality the most harmful thing about this is likely to be the social stigma that these girls will now suffer.

I feel sorry for them because of the social stigma. Stuff like this can have an absolutely devastating effect on a kid. I've seen similar cases where a girl makes a poor choice like this (almost always something that would make her be seen as a slut) and has suffered a disproportionate amount for it. This sort of thing is more likely to get you severely socially ostracised than assaulting someone, and there's something really very wrong with that.

Ahtman: I don't think that people use gallows humour to "deal with tragedy", I think they use it to score cheap points and appear edgy. But perhaps I am being haughty and priggish. (Good word, priggish).

I can't get all that outraged about this, to be honest.

16 year old girls have sex. It happens. In some cases they might even have sex with people they only just met, and in a few cases they might do it for some money.

Now, it isn't good for much older men to prey on younger girls, and so if the men who had sex with her breached of statutory rape laws then they should be properly punished, but as to the girl and her pimp... is anyone trying to claim she was pressured or manipulated in to this? Per the story, she moved the issue forward, this was something she wanted to do.

The idea that the 'pimp' should receive a jail sentence at all, let alone 15 or more years, is simply outrageous.
