This is a little weird to ask but I never actually played casual or competitive. It's more like both actually. I'm thinking of trying to play a good casual game but I don't really know how to play casually. Anyone got any advice?

A tuxedo is way over dressed for a casual game. Try a nice pair of kahkis, a nice button down shirt, and also, good comfortable shoes. A fine mixed drink and finger food help also.

There's no rules or set protocol as to what defines a casual game. It's very much in your mindset and your opponents'.

When you write you list, don't think about what will win or lose. Think about what would be awesome or fluffy. Then after you are done, look at your list, look for giant holes that might make the game boring, and fill those holes.

I played with 8 plague drones in a mono nurgle list recently. I looked at my list and saw a glaring inability to slap around big MCs. So I added a black mace DP, which helped balance out my list from fluff bunny, to a casual fun list to play against.

I've always viewed a casual game as anything outside of a tournament or campaign.

In terms of actually playing, do what you'd normally do I guess. Maybe tone down the list a little if it's completely WAAC, but aside from that it doesn't differ much.

Use units that you typically wouldn't. For an extreme example, field 150 Fenrisian wolves. Not because they are good, but because the look on your opponents face will make up for being tabled in 3. This sort of tactic works well if your opponent takes a list that is also similarly amusing and has no reservations.

Well, why don't you play a list you enjoy, using models you like. Then, be a fun, reasonable, enjoyable human being to play with/against. If your idea of a fun list is leagues out of your opponents, maybe a have a quick talk before the game.

Honestly though, the internet makes a far bigger deal out of lists than out of the person behind the list. Be the person you'd want to play against. Everything else will fall into place, either before, during, or after.

I would play the hardest, cheesiest list know to 40k if the person behind it was a great person to spend time with; I would not spend time with an awful person even if their list was a bunch of ratlings and armoured sentinels.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

This deserves a LoL

OT:
When we play casually we usually just for-go a lot of debatable issues. (LoS from each shooting model, which model is in cover and which is not, pile in moves during assaults). Not too much rules lawyering and mostly run and gun gaming just for fun, not too worried about winning.

As for army list, as menitioned, it comes down to what you feel is fluffy. I run blacktide or triple LRCs with triple vindicators(and nothing else) for kicks because thats how templars roll. Theyre one dimensional lists which can be countered easily but its fun for nights when I just want to relax and not worry about strategy too much.

That's my hyper competitive guard list. Because manticores don't ignore armor saves, cover saves or have ap 1, and are side armor 10.

If you want to play casually in 40k, simply identify that unit or two that makes your list meta/netlisty/one people hate and don't take it/them. Experiment with other units from you codex, you will be surprised how useful most of them are. The better you understand your codex, the better your playing will be.

I just goof off, I try new things, learn new stuff. I almost always come up with new fluff or things like that. One casual game resulted in the naming of a Space Marine Squad and it's battlecry of "For Rhino"

I find it's best to just set up, agree on basic stuff so you're not going what's that cover value in the middle of the game, then just start shooting each other's plastic little men and talking the whole time about whatever.

Eagles soar, but weasels don't get sucked into Jet Engines.

In my mind, casual is the little things. Like for me, when I fire a template weapon, I position it, and then ask my opponent how many I hit, or let them do the scatter measure. Not only is this usually faster, but it makes for a very friendly game. It stops an argument before one even starts.

Little things like that. Allowing people to use a ruler to push 8 cultists for their 6" move instead of moving each model, or taking from the back and putting up front as long as they are the same. Giving each player that one time of "Oh no, I forgot to _____!".

Chaos is the only sanity left.

Kind of a matter of personal opinion but to me its leave the dickish tactics at home. No riptide spams, triple helldrakes/vendettas, no cron skyforce, none of this allies bullcrap that make this ungodly powerful deathstar for cheaper than it should be, etc etc. You can have strong units but dont spam them and dont abuse the allies .

Someone says theyre just in for friendly casual games and brings triple helldrakes is not going to get a casual "fun" list out of me lol.

Alcohol and 40k should never mix imo. Fragile models at your fingertips and youre a little loopy from booze, someone says something you dont like and immediately chuck someething at them and....there goes 60bucks lol.
