I just got carded when buying spray primer. Are the kids seriously huffing this gak these days? I'd think that would, like, kill you or something...

Or might that just've been about graffiti? The clerk just shrugged her shoulders in an "I dunno" gesture when I asked her why I needed ID to buy spraypaint.

Graffiti?

I get carded all the time too. Its funny because I won't get carded for booze (yay, an actual perk to having receding hair!) but for primer and spray varnish I get asked every time.

You must look like a huffer, and I guess I do too

Yeah, I haven't been carded for anything in a long time (receeding hairline + grey hair). That's why it kind of took me by surprise.

I've never seen those behind glass here anyways. Never been carded for paint either

If you spray into a bag or something, the fumes will get you a buzz. Have you never noticed light headedness when painting stuff? It's similar to people sniffing thick felt markers I guess.

Here in NZ I'm fairly sure you've had to show ID for years.

Honestly, I think it depends greatly on your location... I never get carded at home depot for anything... And I've had odd assortments of items in my cart sometimes.

At one of the previous places I've lived, I did get carded at Lowe's, but when I was researching something (probably for the OT here), I came across info that that Lowe's was actually in a relatively high crime area, so it made sense.

Does Texas have a Castro District? It sounds like there must have been a hell of a party.

Its some big-box stores policy to card anyone who buys those specific items, regardless of appearance: cigarettes, booze, spray paint, box cutters, ammunition, lithium batteries when >4 packages, etc.

I actually no longer buy my dullcote at Michael's anymore explicitly because of those. It's always impossible to find someone to unlock the cabinet, and then once someone does, they bring it up to the front for you instead of handing it to you, like you're going to shoplift right after asking them to unlock it for you, and then use said dullcote to do a gigantic invisible graffiti.

Hobby Lobby, where I live, just has it all out, the only items behind the cabinets are the airbrushes.

I've read that the #1 most shoplifted item in America is Preparation H. Not sure if that's true or not.

To the first: Yes and yes. Kids who chrome aren't exactly in the top demographic for intelligence, usually. The buzz overrides the consequences.
To the second: Probably yes to that as well.

We've had similar things here for at least a decade - to cut down on chroming in certain areas and to reduce the spread of unsightly "urban art" on infrastructure.
(I've got no issues with commissioned "UA" on property - even if the art style isn't something I personally find aesthetically pleasing for the most part).

I've been carded once for it - I was 38 at the time.

I was carded for super glue at the age of 22. And I hadn't brought my wallet in with me, just a couple dollars in my pocket. I was polite to the cashier and walked away, but I was mad. Lots of hobby tools can be carded: spray paint, glue, hobby knives...stuff like that.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

They take down your info if you buy a lot of kerosene. Supposedly they're supposed to do it for cough syrup as well. Meth is everywhere out in the sticks.

That reminds me of a story in local news a few years back. There was a pub/tavern/bar type place that kept getting tagged. One night, the owner happened to have caught one of the guys doing it in the act. Rather than call the police, he asked the young man why he kept tagging the place (basically, it was because they kept cleaning it up). So this business owner then tells this painter that he will pay a bunch of money, IIRC it was something like 2-4k, for this guy to paint a "masterpiece" work of art that will showcase the business, the city and the artist himself.... and he does it.

Less than a week after the new, commissioned, UA piece was finished on this wall, the city of Portland ordered this guy clean the "graffiti" off his wall. He explains the costs involved in the past of him doing that, and that this wasn't graffiti, it was a commissioned work of art.

IIRC, long story short, there was a brief court "case" brought forward in which he outlined all the steps again, and further insisted that if the city of Portland wanted his art removed, they would have to pay for it, and pay for all further graffiti removal, since they were forcing him to remove a commissioned piece.... so, he won the case because the city wasn't going to do that, and I think they've since weakened their stance on those situations.

If it's possible to get a buzz from something, some prat somewhere will try it. Human nature I'm afraid.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.
