I saw a similar thread on another forum, So I thought I'd try it here. A thread to show off your latest purchases, talk about recent games, tactics, expectations, etc, for people who enjoy AoS and are optimistic about its future. Let's see if there are actually enough of us on dakka :-D

Personally I'm off to purchase a 45-model strong Stormcast army today. I'm pretty excited that I'll be able to play without borrowing other people's armies like I have been doing. Going to try a more somber paint scheme inspired by the beautiful Ex Profundis one in marble and red. I'm also getting the first book soon and am looking forward to the scenarios, although the free scenarios from the Clash of Swords tournament are already very good. Hoping that the game will stick around in our group, there have been quite a few games and people are giving it a chance.

Great idea for a thread!

I'm currently building up a new Vampire Counts force, but in the meantime they are being added into my Empire army which has now become a "Dogs of War" style mishmash of factions (currently Empire, High Elves, Dwarfs and Vampire Counts).

My long term goals are to build 3 separate forces (Order, Death and Destruction) with GW's School League rules of 30 model armies. This is to allow my two brothers to have a mini tournament with me sometime in the future.

The short term goal is to make a single 30 model School League force, which I am currently painting or rebasing. (You can see the progress in my blog, linked in my signature). Our local GW will be using the rules for a tournament come the end of October, which is a nice goal to work towards.

I feel like AoS will pick up at my local GW. We had a really big group for 8th that has largely been split in if they like AoS or not. I think the tide is starting to sway positively as more and more fun looking games are played in store.

All in all I am very happy with AoS and hope it has every bit of success.

I'm still on the fence about the new fluff but I am hoping GW can improve it as they expand into other armies.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

I'm cracking on with my Stormcast at the moment, but the recent addition of a magnifying daylight lamp it's taking me twice as long to prepare my minis...
I still need to make some additions because I haven't got a 'toolbox' I'm happy with yet, and I actually have yet to win a game (although I have moved from major losses to minor ones and a draw...)
But I'm already thinking after finishing this force with pristine metals, blinding light and neat edges I'll need to move on to something messy and organic; probably Rotbringers or Bloodbound...

Currently I'm working on some Rotbringers with Pestilens allies, proving to be quite the force on the tabletop, and having 40 Blightkings to build and paint have been a nice, if not long task, but enjoyable enough

I'm really liking AoS mostly due to its simplicity and because it adds a social aspect to the game which can be almost non existent in other game systems like 40k, I like talking to my opponent before hand and checking what theyre cool with me bringing etc.

Rot! Glorious Rot!

Besides spending much of my hobbytime on the PPC comp, I'm also slowly rebasing and adding to my VC, Empire, and Chaos forces. I'm still on the fence whether or not to keep my Dwarfs and rebase them as well, or slowly sell them off to make more room for the first three armies. The first goal is to have enough painted and rebased models for 1000 pts of PPC (50-60 wounds), because we've found that for us it really adds to the game to have those round bases. We've played some big games earlier before rebasing, so now we've taken a step back and try to enjoy the game in smaller numbers before adding more models again.

My group have enjoyed AoS alot, both casually and competetively, and it has taken over a few other games we used to play more frequently. Once we have all rebased and painted our forces we're going to do some batreps as well, because that's another side of the hobby I enjoy.

I still haven't got the AoS or Ghal Maraz big books, but will probably get the second one because I hear there are lots of fun scenarios in it to play.

I too hope that AoS really takes off and becomes a success, because despite its flaws it is a solid and really fun game!

Had a demo game last week where I had a teammate and I playing death faction (vampire counts for me, tomb kings for him, he used necron proxies ) against a friend who had played fantasy for along time, he used his dwarves. The dwarf player won, we couldnt kill all of his models, time ran out, and we had summoned enough stuff that we couldn't win a minor victory.

The dwarf player is actually going to run a league now, he said he had a lot more fun than he though he would!

As far as tactics, we had a bit of fun with the shambling horde rule for zombies. If two units of zombies are within one once of each other in the hero phase, they become one big unit. We were summoning zombies on one side of the unit, adding them to the board, and just not moving those particular zombies in the movement phase. Ended up with a pile of about 40 zombies!

I got sucked back in while reading about the Total War game. Some comments about AoS intrigued me, and I started digging into all the changes after not having touched wargamming in almost 4 years.

Right now I'm having a blast reading all of the rules. I've finished a fairly close read of the rules for all but three armies, and I've loved thinking through strategies/synergies and trying to figure out the design and balance intentions that went into producing AoS. In a lot of ways, the rules are very elegant - everything can hurt everything else, monsters are balanced such that they look cool but operate similarly to elite units on the table (they don't do much more damage, if they do any damage at all, and just like a unit they get less potent as they take damage), many characters are soft targets that provide bonuses and synergies rather than being walking death machines... it's really cool.

The streamlined rolling also makes it much easier to gauge the strength of something. You can make a pretty good estimation of how much damage any given unit will do in a round of combat, and how much damage it will take to put them down. Whenever I see an interesting unit, I toss it into a spreadsheet to check my assumptions about how pointy its sticks are.

The lack of points is a little tough, but I'm more optimistic about community comp and the "I-go-you-go" deployment rules than many commenters.

My next goal is to learn painting. I've played WHFB and 40k on and off for more than a decade, with lots of long gaps, but never been good at painting (or even at committing to painting...). I'd like to pick an army and slowly build it up painting as I go. It's exciting that I should be able to play some decent games with a much smaller and more diverse force under AoS rules than I could have under 8th edition rules.

Where can I get more info on school league rules/armies? I googled something at war hammer world but its just a showcase... sounds like exactly what I'm looking for.

I agree about the warscrolls, it's actually a lot of fun just going through and reading them, since all of the special rules are warscroll specific and there is a lot of flavor there.

Despite my misgivings about the lack of a comp system Age of Sigmar does seem to be a fun game. I am saving up some money for the starter set so I can get started on a Stormcast Eternal army. They are such nice models.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
30k Ultramarines: 2000 pts
Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts
AOS Stormcast: Just starting.
The Empire : ~60-70 models.

If you're not interested in the Khorne Bloodbound models, you might want to check eBay. The Stormcast Eternal half seems to go for about 45 USD + shipping.

For my part, I'm starting to work on a small Skaven force. I always like Skaven, but never had any desire to assemble and paint a thousand Clan Rats. Now, I can put together an elite force of relatively few models to add to my existing Chaos Daemons.

Finally i can and have used my hell cannon i bought way back when (in metal) just because i like the model but i never used it as my warriors force was a few monsters and not enough points or % so they sat on the shelf for years now tgey can be used with my deamons and skaven and ogers and gobbos its great. That above anything else i why i like AoS i can finally use all the models i like the look of in one force and not worry about %'s etc.
In my area theres a lot of players who play and feel the same.

Hi guys

I haven't played Warhammer for years and when I did it was 40K. I recently decided I wanted to get back into it again and enjoy a new hobby, this time around the fantasy setting was far more appealing to me.
After popping into my local GW store and chatting to them about AoS I decided to go for it. It really does sound like great fun.

Starting with just a box of Ogres for now, planning to have an army of Ogre Kingdoms and Warriors of Chaos.

Found out the majority of my paints are more of a paste than a liquid, I'll have to try and revive them.

Good idea for a thread.

For my AoS, I went a bit silly, and bought into the idea of a 'fresh start' big time. So, after knocking around with the starter set models, I, umm, decided I would pick up one of everything that came out for the game. Then I decided I would (gulp) paint models specifically so I could run through the campaigns in the various realms.

It has actually not gone too badly and I have almost kept pace with the painting and releases (all the flying Stormcasts are on the table to get painted this week).

Thus far, I have a respectable Bloodbound force (about 100 models, including some odd bits from the novels like that Khorne-worshipping Skaven in the Call of Archaon story), and the Stormcasts are accruing nicely. Also got through the Sylvaneth box set and have a nice little group of Pestilens.

The next big projects are the Rotbringers and then the Bleak Horde. Also need to look at the Dreadhold, but starting off with just a Skull Keep for The Tower Battleplan...

Rather glad the Tau releases are coming up, as that will allow me to keep pace with AoS

Me..... Well i am still anoued there is not more ogre fluff yet..... But with the new book i can deal ...i guess for a while.

My goal is simple more ofres i need 2 more thunder stone horns 12 more mournfangs ect. I would take a pic of my 300+ model ogre army but I am a bit imbarassed because they where my first army and i think i was like 12 when i started them, so many are not so good lol.

Good advice but there is something satisfying about opening a big box of plastic tat. Besides, I'm planning on sticking the Khorne guys on squares and using them for other fantasy games.

I've put together about 200 wounds worth of ogres since i decided to play AOS. got alot of them assembled off of ebay. Last week I played my first ever game of warhammer, and have to say it was alot of fun. Was a 120 wound game against stormcast. I had a tyrant, 2 4 ogre lead belcher units, a 4 mournfang unit, 5 maneaters, a 5 ogre irongut unit and a 6 irongut unit. Was pretty pleased with everything I brought, as I ended up wrecking stormcast to a man with me with around 45-50 wounds left over. Can't wait to throw my thundertusk and stonehorn into the mix, as well as my butchers and golgfag maneater. I like the combat system alot, as I've always hated standing back and watching the other guy kill all my gak and not be able to do anything about it. the rolling for turn each turn is sweet also, makes things interesting when you go twice in a row.

Great to hear you're having fun! Would probably suggest trying out one of the points systems instead of wounds, since Ogres are super good for how many wounds they have :-)

I'm glad to see a positive thread. I have wanted to get into Warhammer for more than 15 years, but when I was younger the cost was prohibitive and then when I got older and had expendable income I didn't know anyone to show me the ropes or to play with. AoS has given me the chance to start playing Warhammer with simpler rules and from a marketing standpoint GW accomplished what I believe was their goal because now I am interested in learning to play 40K which I always felt was too complicated to pick up without someone to guide you along.

Welcome to the forums =)

Glad to hear that you're enjoying AoS, I'm in the exact same situation as you. Finally have the expendable income but none of my friends currently play so AoS offered the perfect chance to start the hobby.

The Stormcast have been growing on me day by day. Initially my reaction was the usual "fantasy space marines? Yuck" but by now I actually love them!

Have just bought the 4 new knights and some more liberators and will start painting the this afternoon. Already have a sizeable force from the starterkit and some addons.

I have to say that Age of Sigmar has rejuvenated my flagging interest in warhammer fantasy both its lore and the game itself. My only regret is the constant stream of negativity online which is a constant downer when looking for others who also love AoS

Before AoS was released one of the rumours described Stormcast as 'good' Chaos Warriors - yes, there's obvious cross-over compared to marines, but I kinda like the tragedy aspect of them. Fighting to defend humanity, while growing further from it.

Nice Thread!

I've started a large Sylvaneth army and I'm beginning to build a Nurgle Rotbringers/Pestilens army to oppose it. I decided I wanted to do a "War in the Realm of Life" theme to give me two different options to play and to make a nice demo-style set to teach new people the game.

Cheers!

Really satisfied with the internal balance of my Skaven army now. There's very few units I wouldn't consider taking.

I always always loved Rat Ogres and I'm really happy that they've been buffed up significantly and can go toe to toe with Ogre Kingdoms basic troops.

All the weapon teams got a buff and are fairly reliable (gasp! I know, but at least they give you the option to over charge every one of them with the risk of blowing yourself up.)

I was kind of hating on Clanrats for a bit, but then I hadn't read about their neat little formation that lets weapons teams hide in them, along with some other neat buffs.

I've been seeing a lot of competitive comp mainly geared towards stopping multiple selections of the same unit from being taken. I can safely say that my Skaven will do well even if I'm forced to take max one of each unit I have access to.

Under the shadow of the Little Brushy

AoS hit all the right buttons for me . As a 30 year veteran of Warhammer Fantasy Battle it helped me love the hobby again. I don't play tournaments anymore so point values do not matter to me. I like the way I can make this game be anything I want it to be. It really is very scaleable. I really liked 8th, but then I liked 7th, 6th, 5th, 4th and 3rd editions as well however it was time for something different. I still have all my old editions and from time to time still play them , but then I have a good group of friends who will play that way.
