Tales of amazing survival stunts in games.
Had a game today. A riptide snagged a relic while I had tiggy and a big Libby conclave nearby, who proceeded to chase it to his board edge. Game went a full 7 turns.
I hit the riptide with:
4 terrify
4 psychic shriek
4 leech life
4 crush
2 smite
1 psychic maelstrom
28 TL assault cannon shots
24 assault cannon shots
24 hurricane bolter shots
18 hurricane bolter snap shots
47 sniper shots
3 TL lascannon shots
He also took two wounds from his nova reactor. He survived the game on 1 wound having never failed a morale. >_< Thankfully my lr crusader was close enough at the bottom of 7 to drive up and contest the relic, netting me the win, but seriously...all that firepower having no in game effect other than a die on the tide's base flipping a couple times is crazy.
What's your horror stories of enemy units who apparently drank immortality potions before battle?

Last thursday I held up Typhus for 4 turns with the remains of my vet squad that had been blown out of their chimera.
5 Vet's vs Typhus, my opponent rolled 1's on the first 3 turns for his demonic weapon giving him ws1.... managing to kill a lone guardsman, on the 4th he rolled fine, but only ended up killing a second. All ended up passing tests etc.
Never seen such an upset seeing it allowed me to mow down the rest of the Chaos SM and Demon army.

I once had a 5 man tactical squad survive all the shooting from my opponent's entire army (he played guard). This included a Baneblade, 3 Russes (1 of which was a Paskisher) and a Wyvern. They were just passing armor and cover saves like madmen. 3 of them still died, but they held on to their objective, and ended up winning the game for me.

5 Fire Warriors armed with EMP grenades charged into a 2 hull point Imp Knight. They did 1 HP with the grenades while the Knight's melee attacks killed 2, and the stomps killed 2 more. Passed my Ld 4 test on the lone surivior to stay locked in combat. Next round of combat the Knight swings its D str attacks, 1 hit but rolls a 1 to wound. The lone Fire Warrior rolls a 5 to hit with the EMP grenade, 6 to pen (just to salt the wound). The Knight goes nuclear and it scatters into the nearby ruins but still hits the Fire Warrior with the giant blast. Took a wound from the blast but made the cover save.

I have one.
Crimson Slaughter v Dark Angels. Dark Angels Command Squad w/ Apoc rolling up the table. By the time they get up one end they've cut a bloody swathe through cultists, CSM and a Daemon Prince and only have 2 veterans + the Apoc left.
Not thinking they consolidate 6 inches out into the open after massacering the last of a CSM group. Right in view of my Las Pred and supporting group of 10 cultists who could charge (Remanents of ones they had killed that I was bring back into the fight.)
Las Cannons all hit, 1 failed wound. Veterans with their SS roll 1s and both fall over. Slightly annoyed at the failed wound from the last las.
10 Cultist charge in, 2 killed from overwatch, 2 or 3 killed from his hits (All landed, all wounded, cant remember Apocs base attacks), 20 odd hits going out and only a few wounds, Apoc passes all armor saves and FNPs.
They loose combat, bust morale and get caught in a sweep. Apoc consolidates 6inches back towards the objective. In his turn he moves, and runs onto the objective(another 6"), and goes to ground.
Pred has angle on him misses with the TL and 1 sponson, manages to get a wound, 6+ cover save made.
Was last turn, wins the game for the Dark angels.

I played a Necron player in a tournament. I brought a 5-flyrant list. He had a Warlord with 2+ and a ResOrb in a unit of 15 warriors. On Turns 3 and 4 I focused 3-4 flyrants on them as well as having my mawlocs come up on his unit. By Turn 5, it was down to just the Lord + 2 warriors left and I focus all 5 of my flyrants onto the unit, trying to get Warlord. I kill off both warriors but the Lord survived, taking 1W in the process. The game would go onto T6 where I focus all 5 flyrants once again onto his Lord. He passes all of his 2+ saves. The game then goes onto T7. Once again, I focus all 5 flyrants onto him. Just 1W! I then assault my mawloc into him (without an Invuln save).....and he survives!!! Game ends with just his Lord on the table, denying me Warlord. 2 full turns of 5 flyrants shooting and 1 turn of 5 flyrants shooting at the Lord and 2 warriors. I've never seen anyone make so many 2+ saves before!
Now just think how many more would have survived had he remembered to use his ResOrb!

Apocalypse game during that Lucky 13's Campaign.
I deployed my Chaos Lord of Khorne with wings along with some raptors.
It is chaos and nids vs tau, necrons, and imperium (forget why). There are two long rectangular gaming tables put together short end to short end and each side started on one of the super long side. I think it was like... I dunno 6 players per side? Maybe 8? It was a lot.
I deep strike them in and then... my side leaves. For some stupid reason my allies ALL MOVE TO THE OTHER TABLE, stranding my high point cost Khorne (I play a fallen angels army). SO, my raptors get 100% DESTROYED on their way in by some space marine BS. Khorne Lorde is all alone. Their turn starts. There are NO other viable targets for most of that table. I survived and ENTIRE round of ranged attacks against my lord taking only one wound. Then... Nightbringer jumps into combat with me. I'd dead... or not?
I manage to survive the next turn by rolling EXACTLY what I need to NOT DIE. I am at the end of the game with 1 wound left and -all idea of how it managed to survive. It became a game at that point- who could kill the lord or Khorne first. I'm sitting there like "well... ok, that's you LAST shooting phase you know".
NOTHING
They took DOZENS of shots. I had a 5+ invuln or something that kept saving my ass.
Not a single bloody wound. I am slack jawed. No clue how this has worked. They even made my change dice like half way through. No idea how it happened. The dice gods loved me or something. I just accepted it and moved to our last turn (we went 2nd). Contested an objective with my apparently invincible chaos lord. We win by 1 point. Game set and match. We wrote a letter to GW explaining wtf happened. Somewhere in their archives there is a story sent in about a Fallen Angel lord who could take on the Nightbringer, the Tau, and everything the Imperium could throw at him.

I took a Chaos Space Marine army against Necrons before they got their newest codex. I had a Land Raider bringing up Kharn the Betrayer and some berserker friends. When they were in range, I sent him against the enemy Warlord which happened to be riding one of those douche canoes.
Kharn's axe has Armourbane. I made that chariot -EXPLODE- seven times! And all seven times it summoned force some mystical magnetism, some Space Elf Jedi Force power that pieced it back together and returned it from oblivion. Kharn was locked in combat the entire game and finally died on the last turn.
Get your Necron exploding chariot here! No reassembly required!

I had an Ork Trukk which survived all of 3rd edition. Never once died.
It's legend grew and I would try and succeed at running over entire squads as they would always try and death or glory it. I can still hear the lamentations when the Armor Plates (which at the time gave it a 6+ Invul) would deflect the lascannon/missile hit.
It was the one model I made a point of keeping when I sold that army. Building up a new Waaagh! soon. That silly old relic from Gorkamorka will be terrorizing the field once more.

Playing vs Grey Knights I landed 35+ lasgun wounds on my opponents terminator squad and he failed 1 save... Also that game, Yarrick and his squad of a psyker and priests jumped out the back of a Vendetta and scattered 12" to the right, straight into a nice park I made in the middle of the board, 2 priests fail dangerous terrain tests and wrap themselves around trees, the psyker passes his test and has a moment of clairvoyance to angle through the trees, Yarrick passes his save. Then Yarrick proceeds to march 3' down the board in the open while getting shot at from behind by 4 psycannons. I passed 4 get back up tests to kill some stragglers and a 5man squad of 3+ save models standing on my last objective.
One game as Dark Angels vs Blood Angels I had a Landraider with a 4+ invul and a MM kill 2 Deep Striking Dreadnoughts and fend off 3 more turns of multiple melta shots and Melta bombs from Dante and a squad. I must've passed 15 or more invuls

Last week, I had a lone Dark Angel sergant keep an 8 man squad of chaos space marines at bay, in close combat and for three turns.
His squad got shot to pieces leaving him holding Objective 3 all by himself. Got charged but refused to give ground.

Once played against Space Marines with my Sisters under the Witch Hunter codex... those days, battles were a very bloody affair. We didn't have our invulnerable saves, so we took casualties as fast as we dished them out.
So it comes to turn three and there are only two models left on the board. The mission was annihilation.
My Exorcist... and his Scout Sniper.
I was hull down. He was in cover.
They shot. No damage.
His turn 4. No damage.
My turn 4. No damage.
His turn 5. No damage.
My turn 5. No damage.
His turn 6. No damage.
My turn 6. No damage.
We have half an hour left on our table and decide to just see how long it takes. Bearing in mind that our turns consist of two single models shooting at each other, with no maneuvering liable to change the probabilities.
We were still playing at the end of the time slot.

I had a game in which (on T1) a devastator squad of mine survived 30 ap3 bolter shots from Sternguard, several storm bolter shots from terminators and a couple of plasmacannon shots from upgraded sternguard. Lost one devvie, the rest laughed it off.
Of course, the remaining four died on T2 to the first four shots fired at them, having done nothing of note on T1.
My EC then proceeded on T3/4 to make up for this by soloing 5 sternguard and 4 terminators.

A Crisis Commander with one wound surviving being shot at by 6 IG plasma cannons on their tanks as he goes to ground. He was also getting shot at with several las cannons, some auto cannons, and half of an IG army. Then on the next turn manages to get to line of site blocking terrain on the last turn.
If he died my opponent would have had another point and not won, but still. Deny him as much points as possible.
The most hilarious thing is as he survived the first dozen shots I was like. feth praying to the dice gods or Yoda. Praise Palpatine. Power of the dark side I guess. My opponent was pissed for these reasons.
1. I won.
2. Commander Survived.
3. Yoda Sacrilege.
4. Drawing on the power of the dark side.
Seriousness it's a little joke to occasionally quote a line from a show in which someone praises or thanks Yoda if they need his help/win. I've been doing that chump gak for years and nothing. The second I go dark side bam. My opponent was a big die hard Republic/Jedi fan.

My overlord charged an imperial knight... and won!
Longer term, I once had a lord and cryptek attached to 10 warriors (old necron dex). They were totally destroyed by a charging group of 15 blood angel death eaters (whatever they are called, the black ones) but the lord and cryptek got back up. They were charged, destroyed and RP'd a further four times by the death eater company, each time surviving and with MSS cutting down blood angels every time they were charged. On their own turns the haywire tek killed a thunderhawk gunship, then a death eater dreadnought, and a scout squad too!

5000pts 2v2. Abaddon chopped through Dante, 5 Sagnuinary guard, 20 DC, 10 wolfguard terminators as well as sundry priests/lone wolfs from both chapters, additionally he spent one turn of the game out of melee in which he wore close range bolter fire from 2 full squads. He lost 4 wounds throughout the battle (lucky roll on boon table regenerated 1) as well as his bodyguard of 5 terminators but survived to see that particular world burn.

I got held off here. My Daemonkin vs his Harlequins/DEldar. He has some IC (not sure which, only time I've ever played Harlequins) sitting in cover with a 2+ cover save. It's something nasty so I want to kill it ASAP. Soul Grinder gets to it turn 2, Baleful Torrent to ignore his cover/Instant Death....makes his 5++. Harvester Cannon, saves them all. Turn 3, saves everything again. Grinder decides he's had enough and charges in...misses every single attack. His turn 3 assault phase, miss/save everything again. Finally, turn 4, I finally kill the thing. I ended up winning, but my SG didn't do much of anything, though the next turn it did kill almost an entire DEldar troop squad with its flamer, giving me an objective. Still not nearly as much as it could have.

In a tourney a couple of months ago, I had a devastator squad holed up inside some ruins. I was facing an Astra Militarum player. Those devs survived like 3-4 turns of shooting from a LRBT. They just couldn't fail a cover save. For my opponent, this was just insult to injury, as I had dropped a suicide melta squad behind his lines and obliterated Pask on the first turn of the game, and the devs were tearing stuff up with their lascannons.
Another time was a lone Deathwing terminator getting beat up by a Termie Chaos Lord and another Chaos termie. It was like the second round of combat, all the other Deathwing were killed. The termie took like three wounds from power fists, and made all his invuln saves (I think I rolled two 6s and a 5). He died next turn, but he took that other Chaos termie (not the Lord) with him!

5th edition. CSM vs IG. Turn 1 Some IG Infantry move up. Kharn, (by himself) charges the 10 foolish Guardsman. At the end of the game one Guardsman is left standing. Kharn is dead. He never got out of that combat.
More recently - UM vs Nids.
Turn 1 Heavy shooting from the nids manage to decimate an enemy Dev squad, leaving a Missile Dev and the Sergeant. Knowing my Gargoyles were prepped for a charge, the two UM charge in, with the Sarge dieing to Overwatch. We spent the rest of the game trading blows, with him killing 1 gargoyle a turn, and taking no Wounds.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
