Thinking about getting into 30k but struggling on deciding a legion so thought i'd ask which legions or, more specifically, which companies you collect and why?
If you play a different 30k faction you can say which and why for that as well.

I'm most of the way through Fulgrim at the moment and trying to decide between Tarik Torgaddons Luna Wolves, Horus Aximands Sons of Horus or Solomon Demeters Emperor's Children. Unfortunately i know that the further i get into the series the harder this decision is probably going to get for me.

Death Guard: 'Cause there cool, I like how pre-fall, they were one of the most "viewed in awe" legions, I mean, you don't become a by-word for courage and stubbornness by being lame
Thousand Sons: My first choice, but I had to push them off due to lack of any and all FW support (I've started now, now that we have a confirmed scheme)
Solar auxilia; 'Cause there cool, customizable, and fit my "Crusade fleet" scheme
Imperial Militia: Read above
Mechanicum: read above

I would play all of them if I could afford it.

But I decided to start with the Raven Guard because;

1. I love Lightning Claws.
2. I've always liked them.
3. When I started in 4th I played an Infiltrating Space Marine Army.
4. Did I mention that I love Lightning Claws?

were money not an issue, I would probably even start Alpha Legion, Imperial Fists, and Custodes (whenever they release, though I'm probably still gonna buy them for use anyways)

Oh man, I'm right there with you on the Custodes.

I use vanilla legionnaires - i treat them as the ship-boarding party and planetary landing team for the Ordo Reductor Mechanicum Galleass called the Artaxerxes 978.
there is a 50/50 split of blackshields and tech-marines in training with blackshields preferring service in the boarding party.
Many of the blackshields are emperors children or death guard but there are also a smattering of world eaters.
Raven guard send more recruits for training on board the Artaxerxes 978 than any other loyalist legion.

Oh,and Ordo Reductor FTW!!
I made a full Ordo Reductor army when only betrayal had come out and they weren't a seerate army yet - good mates i recon.
i spotted the titan tech-priest model i bought to go with my warhound was being set up as Calleb Decima in the book and that was it - Ordo Reductor all the way!
When the second book came out and legio cybernetica got loads of new units and the Ordo Reductor got access to an abeyant, i knew i would be the only one using them and in time awesomeness would transpire - and here we are: with awesomeness!!

Legio XIII Ultarmarines: For the simple reason that blue is a nice color. And I've always liked the Ultramarines but never cared for their 40k rules.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

I'm starting to build a 30k Ultramarines army. Two reasons: I've never painted a mainly blue army before, and the Roboute model seemed like an interesting one to paint. Given the size of a force needed to play 30k, and the speed I paint at, I've no idea if it will ever get used on the table, but I'm enjoying putting it together so far.

Night Lords, Iron Warriors and working on Sons of Horus. all total about 11000 points. Why? Paint scheme pure and simple for IW and SoH, have had Night Lords since 2nd ed.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

Thousand Sons. Why? Because the Dawn of War PC games got me into my Original Blood Ravens army, and the more I followed them and their fluff (as much as many people may poo-poo on it) it lead me to the Thousand Sons and their possible and plausible connection. And try as I might to shift to other legions, even with a hearty investment in Imperial Fists and Salamanders, I just can't give up my Psychic Boys in Red!

I have a Mechanicum army, because stompy robots are cool.
I have an unassembled Solar Auxilia army (recruited from the Eisenkern system )
My main force is a Pre-Heresy Emperor's Children legion. I like the whole idea of an order of noble paladins before their fall from grace. And I like the purple color scheme.

Word Bearers, since they were my CSM army anyways and I fell in love with them after reading first heretic. When Argel Gal finally comes out I will be a very happy man.

I was lucky that they got some pretty solid rules through, three dice for morale checks picking the lowest two is nice, and the chaplain tax while annoying is nice and fluffy.

My favourite minis released so far and I really like the scheme I had in mind and the FW transfers are brilliant.

Death Guard was my first. Their methods of warfare is pretty close to what I've been doing in RTS games since I was like 7. It was pretty easy for me to slip into it.

I've recently started a mechanicum army for the fun of it and the conversion possibilities. Going to be doing a lot of black primer until they put out the livery for Anvillus nine.

Emperors Children ... Only so I can drop a boatload of noise marines on the board and exclaim:

"Behold, I bringeth forth my mighty Ke$ha Marines ... Your ears shall be filled with auto-tuned stupidity. Your army shall smell of Nurgle due to the awfulness of the (so-called) music they inflict upon your masses. See how your army flinches away not unlike a Slaanneshie School girl? Yes, my Ke$ha Marines are feared far and wide!"

Now, we like big books. (And we cannot lie. You other readers can’t deny, a book flops open with an itty-bitty font, and a map that’s in your face, you get—sorry! Sorry!)

I'm currently having the problem of wanting to play four legions . As someone who loves the gameplay aspect and hasn;'t been able to get really hard into the fluff, I've really only been looking at rules, so I chose two legions for both loyalists and traitors... Specifically, IH and RG for loyalists (aka what I play\played in 40k) and IW and NL in 30k. They all have an aspect of the game I love (IH are tanky as all, IW are the siege masters, NL are the kings of the jumppack and instilling fear into their enemies, and RG are bad-ass space ninjas with giant piss-off claws.) So, I'd suggest trying some stuff out, and learning what legions you like to play on the TableTop before choosing one

Play them all, loyalist RG, IH, NL and IW. They could be post Istvaan vets.

Word Bearers. I used to play CSM but the low quality of their codex was dismaying.

Word Bearers are better at being CSM than the CSM themselves are (My 40k CSM would kill for Gal Vorbak, Mhara Gal, artificer armor, paragon blades...) so the choice was clear.

I painted up a ton of ultramarine with old school red bolters and loved it! But they have been stripped and now are becoming iron warriors due to the amount of iron warrior parts and vehicles I have kicking around.
Ultramarines for 'know no fear'...the book that returned faith to the ailing HH black library series.
Iron warriors for general harshness and utility. The legion whose distinctiveness comes from massive guns and a feth everyone attitude

I'm currently working on a World Eaters army. I played them in 40k since 3rd edition and love their fluff. I read betrayer and it sealed the deal, I had to start a 30k world eaters army based on Kharn's 8th company.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."
