This came out this week. Saw it last night

Non-Spoiler Review: There is a scene or so where the Rock is playing full on Black Adam. It's great. Brutal. Vicious. A killer. It's all down hill from there.

I want to emphasize the bit when Black Adam first shows up in the modern day is REALLY good. It's about as perfect a Black Adam as you could hope for. But then.... just everything else about the movie is so... ugg...

Which is just like Morbius really. His origin is a near perfect telling of his character. And then it's just put into a bad movie in every other respect.

It's not innacurate with the way they treat the character and his magic. Like... He makes copies of himself. But when flying around he is fully cgi (unlike strange who is a real man in a rig). And where as dr strange did the cool many hands thing Fate just kind of has golden shimmers and then the duplicates are just there. Why not... Giant anhk portals that they come pouring out of? And then when they are there do they do 1000 little red whips or something cool? Nope. You wouldn't believe how boring the thing he uses them for is.

His magic visually looks like fractal mirror realm stuff. Not the trippy architecture folding in on itself. I mean the broken fractal wall between the real world and the mirror dimension. But give it a yellow tint. Blocking something. Weird fractal yellow mirror wall. Hitting somebody? Throw a ball of weird fractal yellow mirror stuff. The one time i thought i saw an anhk it was made out of that same stuff.

Nabu just isn't even in the movie if that gives you any sense of the characters translation to screen. If Dr Fate is your character, go watch young justice. They get him there.

Well there's your first problem!

Reviews vs audience score is night and day with this one. Critics hate it. Audiences love it.

For my part I thought it was tons of fun. It's not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a fun time at the theatre.

I equate the bloated audience score with the synder verse style DC cult that loves everything DC produces regardless of actual quality. It certainly doesn't account for all of it, but it does account for some of it.

I've become fairly convinced the man could literally eat a week's worth of P.F. Changs and then hang his ass off stage and gak into the crowd.

If there is evidence for it it's not conspiracy.

I mean, you could go look at things like the spoiler discussion on reddit for the movie where the "audience" is absolutely ripping the movie to shreds. You could look at everything surrounding the synder movies including the synder cut which was complete garbage. You could reference "The Flash entering the speed force." being audience voted in as "the greatest moment in a movie for all time" at the Oscars. I would argue that the assumption that rabid DC fans are artificially inflating a number on a Snyder linked DC film is just a given at this point (There are connections to the Snyder stuff in it, if brief).

You could call it conspiracy, but then what do you call just good observation?

I thought it was alright - nothing special or surprising, but a fun couple of hours, and a decent depiction of Adam, so far as I know him (which is hardly comprehensive, mainly 52). I adore Cyclone so it was nice to see her on the big screen, even if she didn't really do anything; the visualisation of her powers was actually pretty impressive in how it managed to make corkscrewing through the air look badass; nice also to see that, contrary to the cost-cutting paint job on her action figure, she did have her stripey tights, as she should. Ruinous gods only know what's going to happen at WB any day of the week, but if a sequel's ever announced, I'm good for it.

One of the critics I trust said "This is dumb, but a lot of fun." The other one said "This is a bad movie, and I loved every minute of it."

But nah. I'm sure the good response is just from the "Snyder Stans". There literally couldn't be another explanation.

Yep, that summed it up. Either way Aquaman entertained me start to finish so I'm not sure it matters wich it is.

Black Adam? I don't care one bit about Adam. He's a villain & I rarely like the villains used as the stars in comic book movies. I will however go see it at matinee prices for the JSA (even though I strongly suspect they'll prove disappointing).

Yeah, i loved all the incredibly dumb comic stuff they packed into Aquaman. Lots of fun.

I really enjoyed Aquaman. It was unapologetic about its Sci Fi comic book schlockiness. It was the opposite of X-Men Dark Phoenix.

So I haven't seen the film yet, but I read some reviews. Like with any creative work, expectations have a lot to do with one's impression. Personally, I can't imagine walking into a Dwayne Johnson film -- especially having seen the marketing -- and expecting something other than a big, dumb, fairly fun popcorn flick.

I know about the mid-credits scene, but I don't think the audience ratings are due to that scene connecting to the Snyder Twitter mob. From what I've seen, they're hostile to basically anything Snyder wasn't directly involved with, and are a really small group to boot.

The size of the Snyder group doesn't matter compared to the impact they have when taking into account internet based systems that can be spammed or whatever. Again, The Flash Entering the Speedforce in justice league won an oscar for greatest moment in cinema for all time. Viewer ratings on things like rotten tomatoes are low hanging fruit. I am not saying there are not people who legit like the movie. There are. And good.

I am saying that number has been inflated artificially. Like we have all the evidence of them doing.

And again, there are great bits in Black Adam. They are just surrounded by a bad movie. Aquaman was consistent. It's characters made sense within the world. (this bit isn't a spoiler because it's in the trailers) Hawkman gives Black Adam gak.. "Heroes don't kill." in a universe where Batman turns people into paste, uses guns, brands people, and kills more people then any other version of Batman to date. Supermans opening reveal to the world had him break someones neck. Wonder Woman fought in WWI. etc etc...

This is a universe where the heroes CONSTANTLY kill. And if anything it shows how bad that is for the universe. What actually makes Black Adam a villain in the universe where it's greatest heroes have bigger body counts?

Interesting. Seem to recall seeing them trashing BA and DJ just weeks ago. But I guess maybe with the mid-credits scene they're convinced themselves that Snyder will return like MacArthur, King Arthur, and Jesus wrapped into one.

The movie has VERY brief non-speaking shots of Batflek, Ezra Flash, and Momoa Aquaman. Plus suicide squads Amanda Waller in a couple brief appearances (who Batflek interacted with). So by all logic this takes place in the Snyder-verse.

i think the movie could drop the entire story element of sabbac
they could have stuck with occupied country, worked that as to why they awakened their hero, had the jsa show up to stop the villain murdering the mercs without due process
play off the politics of things like the society not stepping in all those years beforehand, have someone go for the crown as a post credit or something after realizing the stories about the history are real to set up a sequel, rather then the fan service post credit we got

Villain was apparently a pretty late addition to the script. I hear it commented on a lot.

As much as I love when BA gets the Doom treatment, I suspect no US exec would have felt comfortable selling "middle eastern country rejects foreign influence and chooses its own destiny" to the US as a primary narrative.

I'm of a similar mind. Was indifferent to seeing the movie, but some of the hot takes I've seen from certain folks gave me "The Rock Eyebrow Raise."
