Yes it’s another movie and TV thread. But this time focussing on those actors who never seem to be the lead, but whose casting in your opinion always awards extra points.
My first pick?
Sean Pertwee
I’ve just come across him as Lastrade in Sherlock season 2, and it was that appearance which got my cogs turning. See, I genuinely cannot think of a role where he’s not been scene stealing. And the more I think, the more I realise just how often he pops up. From minor cameos (the face of Father in Equilibrium) to “I think I’d far rather the show focussed on him” regular appearances such as the best Alfred Pennyworth ever in Gotham.
Every time his distinctive face is on my telly, I just know I’m gonna enjoy that episode. He’s just that great and uplifting an actor.

Sean Pertwee was in the Ultramarines movie as well I believe!
I really like Patrick Warburton (voice of Brock Sampson & Joe from Family Guy). At this point he's a prolific voice actor, so I don't know if you can call him a supporting actor per say. but I Bove seeing him in little cameos or supporting roles in live action as well.

Also? Big shout for Steve “for a significant period, Hollywood’s favourite second banana” Buscemi. Especially in the 90’s where it felt like he was in everything, but not in a “Oh god not Jim Carey again” way. At the time Jim Carey basically just played….Jim Carey.

Steve Buscemi definitely deserves a shot at the title. Though not sure I'd say he's not a leading man since he took the lead in Boardwalk Empire. Then again Boardwalk Empire isn't a film so maybe I'm being too picky.
There's a chance we could end up saying nothing but blokes in this thread (not necessarily our bias, but heavily weighted towards how movies are produced). So I'll make sure we get at least one of the ladies in - Maggie Smith. She's been playing the 80 year old secondary character for the last 30 years.
Sadly, back in the day women weren’t given as many roles over as long of a period of time, unless they were comedians or scream queens. Seems like dramatic actresses who were not themselves stars only had a few years of career and then disappeared until they were old enough to play main characters’ mothers.
That said, I’ll watch anything with Madeleine Kahn, Catherine O’Hara or Rae Dawn Chong. I wish Cynthia Rothrock had a career in the US making action films. These days, Judy Greer is one of my favorites.

"Sometimes the only victory possible is to keep your opponent from winning." - The Emperor, from The Outcast Dead.
"Tell your gods we are coming for them, and that their realms will burn as ours did." -Thostos Bladestorm
For me it’s a tie between Gary Oldman and Alan Rickman. Both fantastic character actors rather than leading men (for the majority of their careers at any rate).

The first four that come to mind are Bill Nighy, Doug Jones, Ron Perlman and Clancy Brown.
