For now, I am happy that my motivation for getting stuff painted seems to be returning. I have also caught the Nurgle bug, as it seems, so the next Plague Marine is already mostly finished, only missing his base:
The model was built from leftover parts some time in late 2010, so I was more than happy to finally slap some paint on it! I have also found out that my recipe for rusty and decayed Nurgle armour does a great job of blending together loyalist and chaos parts without much further need for conversion!
Anyway, hope you all have a great weekend!

Thanks a lot, guys! @ Nashbashem: Well, to be honest, using Agrellan Earth like that was a bit of a mixed success at best, but experimenting like that was a lot of fun! @ Jehan-reznor: Hmm, while that wasn't the intended effect, you're quite right, now that I look at it. Maybe... ...sorry, couldn't resist @ ivanbard: Hah, seems like you're totally in luck, mate, because I sat down yesterday to actually put together the Retiarius I mentioned further up in this thread! Here's what the model looks like right now: Still needs some fine tuning, but I think you get the idea!

First thihgs first, he looks really nice man!!!! Although i would like to see an actual trident on the retiarius (always loved tridents ) i think the lance/halberd from the Chaos Lord looks great
And where did this net come from (i think it's Dark Eldar but is it?)??

Cheers, mate! The net is indeed from the Dark Eldar Wyches. And while I considered using (or rather, building) an actual trident, that Chaos Lord's weapon proved to be too big a temptation for me And only a couple of hours later, here's the mostly completed Retiarius conversion: Sorry for the slightly blurry pics -- seems like the camera had other ideas...

You could always use a couple tyranid claws to give it side prongs/blades. Make it more of a spetum, to have at least a half trident.

Theres a real dynamism with these guys and is their any plans for a Myrmilo. also one of the things the Pit Fighter Mordheim gand picked up on was that the Gladiators used to mimic the styles of enemies of Rome. This might be an idea for the hunt.

The blade, instead of a trident, actually works. He is an Astartes after all. You can also, put together a chaos trident based on the chaos star design

Cheers, guys! Glad to see the gladiators have seemingly managed to get your creativity all fired up
Regarding the lance on the Retiarius-inspired gladiator, I am actually happy enough with it not being a trident -- that chaos lord weapon was just too cool not to use (plus I probably wouldn't have done much with it other than use it in this squad anyway).
A Murmilo seems to be virtually identical to the Secutor, apart from the different helmet design, so I doubt he would bring anything new to the table, design-wise. The idea of the gladiators mimicking their foes is pretty interesting, though: Maybe I'll just give that one some thought. Hmmm...
Regarding a sagittarius, I did actually consider that, but a bow just seems to far removed from the look and feel of the squad, and too primitive, even for a squad of crazy madmen That said, there are a number of gladiator types I could see myself building for the squad -- keep your eyes peeled.
As a matter of fact, I do have something new to show you: Caught between a birthday in the family and my addiction to the wonderful video game Bravely Default this weekend, I was nevertheless able to make some time for painting. Here's the virtually finished Secutor:
Some final touchups may be in order, but I think you get the idea. Oh, and here's a less fuzzy look at the Retiarius, while we're at it:
I am actually stupidly happy about this guy, because he started out pretty lame but has now come into his own as a model, if you ask me. All thanks to all the inspiration I get from my various threats! Thanks a lot, guys!
As always, let me know what you think!

Nice paint job on the Secutor mate! Does that mean we may see some other unfinished projects (like Lorimar for instance) get some colour?? As for the rest of the gladiators, how about turning the guy with the chainspear/halberd into an Hoplomachus or making a Cestus? Either way great job with this squad!!

@ Legio Ultra: Mate, nobody would like to see Lorimar painted as much as me -- it'll just be a question of working up the courage to get started on him, as this is the one model that I absolutely must not mess up with For now, building and painting these gladiator dudes gets me in the mood for more World Eaters, and that has to be a good thing, right?
Speaking of which, the rough draft for the different types of gladiators looks like this:
- Dimachaerus (two swords): done
- Dimachaerus with slightly different equipment (sword and axe): done
- Secutor (sword, shield, helmet): done
- Retiarius (net and spear): already built, next on the paintstation
- Glaivex (basically my own invention: the guy with the chain glaive): done (as of yesterday)
- Carnifex (again, my own invention: armed with a double-headed axe): Vorl Dustwalker is one of these, and I may or may not be working on another one...
Here's a little teaser picture of the finished stuff:
There are of course some other types of gladiators that might be interesting: a Caestus, wielding dual power fists? A Bestiarius, complete with chaos hound? An Andabatae, with a closed helmet, blindly charging at the enemy like a wild bull? We'll see....
And, in case you don't remember, I already converted an Essedarius, a chariot based fighter, some time ago:

Thats really nice. I di similar for my Wolves but used a defiler leg pat, its an almost perfect fit.
They remind me a bit of the chariot scene in Gladiator... only more bad-ass

Sorry if I irritated you, it was not my intent, and yes it's definitively a good thing that you're getting in the mooud for more World Eaters!!
As for the Cestus, theoretically he should be wielding two power fists but isn't that a bit too advanced (thechnologically) for this squad?? I was thinking something like this would be more suitable (and I really am curious to see how you would treat these as your solutions to other design issues have always been very interesting and inspiring to say the least)

Cheers, guys!
@ Legio Ultra: Oh no, I wasn't irritated at all! Sorry if it came across that way -- if anything, I'm frustrated with taking so long to actually get the most important model in my army painted You're right, though: Being in the mood for more World Eaters is definitely a good prerequisite for getting started on some of my backlog
Regarding the Cestus, the double power fist does seem a bit much, doesn't it? At the same time, the classical equipment (shown in the picture you posted) seems a bit flimsy, especially when imagined in the context of the 41st millennium: Granted, you have to suspend your disbelief anyway to be fine with a squad of half-naked gladiators wielding archaic weapons, but to just arm the poor guy with some brass knuckles seems to be a bit lacking. Maybe I should go the "God of War" route and make the gauntlets into these huge, stylised lion/daemon heads? Anyway, I'll need to put more thought into this

Thanks for the additional ideas, guys!
Lightning Claws might work, especially since I still have several sets from the Raptor/Warp Talon kit. The MaxMini fists linked by captaincheese are also quite lovely -- that would be an amazing look for cestus weapons! Yet another option would be to use the vambraces/gauntlets of the WFB plastic chaos lord, since I still have those lying around from my Deracin conversion. Definitely food for thought. Hmmm...
Here's something I just slapped together: For some reason, I really like the Secutor's profile view:

You could look at the Ogre Kingdoms weapons- many of them use what are essentially cestii- and if you can manage to get an Ogre arm onto a body- well, the supermassive arms could be an interesting look for someone who spends his days punching through Ceramite without any mechanical advantage.

What that shot really needs is a loyalist corpse or a champion of some other God. I'm also reminded about the story of Huron Blackhearts Arena in one of the anthologies.

As for the lion/daemon headed gautlets, it could be a very nice idea, or i though maybe add some Ork pauldrons on armored fists (not sure about the size though, as my bitzbox lies 214 kms away from me and will keep so for the next month). Keep up the good work and inspiration will come!!!!
Oh and nice pic of the Secutor, very artistic reminds me of my university projectS

Or perhaps powerfists taken from IG...they'd not be so bulky as the marine versions.
