Your dread is looking really good. The sarcophagus front is really cool, as is the skeleton underfoot (bone's strong stuff, I guess). I think that perhaps more chaos-y detailing would help the look. Also, something about the wrist of the close combat arm seems off. Maybe rotate the hand a few degrees clockwise?

Also, the warsmith is really awesome. The hammer is a cool idea, and the hand is waaay to big, but perfect, so...

Cheers!

Thanks prime12357! Regarding the Dread's hand, I really tried multiple positions. But it's a bit tricky to get right, since some of them interfere with the underslung flamer. Still others make the model loke a little awkward. So the pose of the hand really was something of a compromise. I think it kinda works out okay, though

For the skeleton you could always build up gravel and stuff around it to show how it is supporting the weight a little better OR you could go a way I had originally planned and use one of the loyalist sarcophagi plates ripped open exposing the skeleton. Check out the pic here..

You know, I've actually pretty much made my peace with the skeleton I noticed later that I should also have done something with the Dread's toes to make the foot look more realistic, but I'll just chalk that off as two lessons learned for next time -- and if they release a new plastic Chaos Dread kit, there's guaranteed to be a next time too

That's one great idea with the busted sarcophagus on the base, though. I may have to steal it for another model, perhaps a Daemon Prince? I still have a Bloodthirster waiting to be built and painted. Hmmm...

Also, I realised again that your Dread is quite awesome, even in this unfinished stage. You'll definitely have to finish him, mate!

As always, thanks for the inspiration!

The toes are pretty easy to cut and then bend to wrap around an object, as I've found. I never really noticed it before you pointed it out though, so it's not really a problem, I suppose.

Sounds good buddy. i know I really do need to finish my Dread, he is so close in a few days it will be exactly a year since I started him but at the moment I am focussing on my Feral Titan. Making good progress on that though. As always looking forward to your updates

I love your dreads. The first one with the juggernaut head. I was trying to think of how to fit one, that looked cool, if only I 'd thought of adding a neck great work.

Thanks a lot, tipios! You're basically one of the masters of Dread building, so it's really quite an honour

You're right though: The moment when I got the idea to add a neck to the first Dread was really a bit of a turning point! Most Dreads that use a Juggernaut head have it sitting flush against the sarcophagus. That often makes the Dread look fairly immobile and static. I wanted him to look very angry, and the neck really helped My favourite part is that it was mainly constructed from a leftover Defiler CCW. The original weapon looks fairly horrible in my opinion, but I cut it into many little pieces and did all kinds of things with them

Thanks for the compliment it's thanks to dakka though, there are many inspiring threads here that can help out developing techniques, and ideas. I now have a juggernaut head I can use, thanks to you

Yes, the Defiler CCW weapon is my least favourite part in the whole of GW but as neck parts it's perfect!!!

LOL, enough with the skeleton already Those concerned with realism may imagine that the model shows the exact moment the Dread steps on the skeleton, just an instant before it's pulverised

I, on the other hand, firmly subscribe to the "Rule of Cool", so I am not afraid of building things that are stupid and unrealistic

However, you've managed to get me intrigued about the idea of a Necron trampled underfoot but still "alive" (or whatever it is Necrons are when they've not been completely annihilated). Might have to save that idea for yet another model...sigh

Dude, that would be so META

About the cabling: Great idea! Like I said, that CCW is nearly useless in its original function, but there's virtually no better readymade cables, especially for larger models!

I was actually watching Terminator Salvation this morning. I was thinking of maybe using all the CCW I have and making a massive tail or something but just writing that down sounds lame so Im gonna stick with the cabling idea

Alright, some news on my Dread:

With the body of complete, it’s time to take a look at the different weapon options. Here we go:

The Venerable Dread kit comes with three different wapon options already, so much of the work had already been done for me by GW’s designers. The options present in the kit are a Lascannon, Plasma Cannon and Assault Cannon. As a very nice bonus, those three weapons can be easily exchanged by swapping out the gun barrels even after the model is finished. It doesn’t even need any magnetising.

It was clear to me that I would keep the Las and Plasma Cannons, since they are just as viable in a CSM list as in a loyal Marine army. The only thing I had to do was to make them look slightly less loyal and a lot more chaotic.

First, the Lascannon:

This one was the easiest conversion by far: I just clipped off the ends of the gunbarrels and exchanged them with dragon heads from the Chaos vehicle sprue. The arm itself would be used for both the Las and Plasma Cannon, so I only had to convert one version. I stole the idea to use a little icon of Khorne on the arm from Biohazard’s Dread conversion and added a dangling skull on a chain as well as another skull on a spike for good measure. As a rule of thumb, you can never go wrong with skulls and chains on a World Eaters model.

Next, the Plasma Cannon.

Once again, all I needed to do was to add a couple of bits to achieve the Chaos look. Easy, right?

And it was. I added a leftover daemon head from the Defiler kit which fit perfectly with only minor cutting necessary. I also added a chain hanging from the weapon’s muzzle, and the Plama Cannon was done as well.

So far, so good! Here’s where the fun started though: The third option that came with the Venerable Dread Kit was a modern day Assault Cannon. So as a true follower of the dark gods, I would have to come up with a weapon more in line with the Chaos Space Marine armoury. I chose the trusty Autocannon which meant that I couldn’t use the Assault Cannon bit. I also wanted a Heavy Bolter as another option, so I would have to convert that too. Luckily, my deep bitzbox contained several unused Dreadnought arms (some from the Venerable Dread, some from the Furioso kit I had used to buy my CC Dread), so I gathered my bits and got going.

First up, the Heavy Bolter:

An easy enough conversion, this one. I took another page from Biohazard’s book and pretty much stole his idea of how to build a heavy Bolter using weapons from the regular CSM kit. A little cutting and fitting was all it took. I added an old Warriors of Chaos shield and yet another piece of chain and a skull to the shoulderguard. A little repetitive, I know…

And finally, the Autocannon:

This was built by combining a leftover Frag Cannon arm from the Furioso Kit with Ork gun barrels. The requiste skull and chain bits were then added to acieve the Chaos look – you should know the drill by now…

And with that, the different weapon options were finished – although I feel I’ll have to build a Multimelta and Rocket Launcher somewhere along the way, just to have a full set.

Alright, time to get some paint on this bad boy Stay tuned for the next update when I'll have lots of pretty pictures of the finished model

Thanks, tipios! The best part is that I found a way of using that leftover arm from the Furioso kit! I always hate good bitz going to waste Then again, I had to buy the Ork weapons to pull off the conversion, but oh well - I guess you cannot win them all

Okay, everyone. Here's the promised update on my completed Dread:

To celebrate the occasion, let’s have a huuuge post with lots of pretty pictures!

Having painted my first Dread a short time ago, I was positively surprised by the experience. The larger scale compared to regular 40k infantry made for much smoother sailing, while working in multiple sub-assemblies wasn’t nearly as exhausting as expected. So I had already developed some kind of routine before tackling my second Dread.

I started by laying down an undercoat of GW Chaos Black spraypaint. The lower body, upper body and weapon options were sprayed while the model was still disassembled, so I could be sure to get paint in all the little nooks and crannies. Also, as a first for me, I actually glued the different weapons to leftover pieces of sprue for easier access during spraying and painting.

With undercoating out of the way, I started on the actual paintjob. The base and lower body came first. Then I painted the upper body, the only complication being that I had elected to permanently attach the left arm before painting. But fortunately, everything worked out okay.

Here’s the completed Dread with just the weapon arm missing. Special care was giving to the pilot’s desiccated and ruined features. Yeah, I know, I probably need professional attention…

I then completed all of the weapons in two shorter sittings. Since I had resisted the temptation of glueing everything together beforehand, painting all the different parts was easy enough. Here’s what I came up with:

First up, the Lascannon:

Next, the Plasma Cannon (using the same arm, as previously mentioned):

I couldn’t resist painting a simple OSL effect on the plasma coils. It’s pretty subtle and not all that spectacular really, but I like it enough that the Plasma Cannon is now my favourite from a visual standpoint, even though I usually go for another option when I am actually using the model in games.

Next in line, the Heavy Bolter:

I’m a little ashamed to admit that the barrels have not yet been drilled out – there simply wasn’t a drill bit of the right size available. I guess I’ll have to get that fixed sooner rather than later though, since the black dots look even more silly due to the size of the weapon…

And finally, the Autocannon:

I am quite pleased with this one actually, considering it was the most involved conversion of the bunch. It looks suitably brutal and effective, doesn’t it?

And with that, my second Chaos Dread was finished. Here he is once again in all his glory:

In the photo, the model is equipped with the Plasma Cannon. The additional weapons are (from left to right): Lascannon, Heavy Bolter and Autocannon. The facemask can also be taken off.

All in all, I am very pleased with this guy. He turned out just like I had imagined, plus he makes an awesome companion piece for my other Dread. Speaking of which…

The true genius of this conversion is that Marax the Fallen can also profit from the additional weapon options. Take a look:

Since the model was planned with the dual CCW’s firmly in mind, I was a little hesitant to give him a different armament. But I have to say he looks just as pissed off with an Autocannon, don’t you think?

Anyway, those guys really add a lot of firepower and character to the 4th assault company. And it was a lot of fun to build and paint them. I could easily see myself completing an army consisting solely of Dreads…go figure.

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Thanks progreen!

Concerning your question: The one with the skull mask was converted from a Venerable Dread. The one with the Jugger head was originally a Furioso.

Hope that helps!

Beautiful Dreads.

A suggestion, not sure if someone beat me to it, but the head you had on your Dreadnought that was replaced with the defiler mask, you should use it on a Dreadknight conversion. Would look sick.

Keep up the good work, brother.

Whoa, don't tempt me any further, buddy! It's hard enough to resist as it is

Seriously though: While it would be fun to try a couple of things with the Dreadknight kit, I'll have to suspend that thought for a while. At the moment, there's too much unpainted stuff on my desk anyway and I imagine that it'll only get worse once the new Codex hits.
