I think a part of the hobby will always include converting. It’s in our blood (for the blood god). Even if the current edition of the rules don’t include things, if they can be found in the lore, or even hinted at, some mad fiend will cob them together and paint them. While the stock GW kits are getting better and better, there is something to be said for taking a knife to them with wild abandon and making something uniquely, awesomely, your own.

Keep on doing what you do so well, looking amazing as always.

And I’m sure that Ultramarine head will turn up later on someone else’s base. No skull will go to waste.

Great looking squad! What makes them so scary is, that they are mostly not in a charging stance. That controlled rage, that can be unleashed with a short command really shines through with those models.

More great additions. Out of curiosity, when was the last time you took a photo the your entire World Eaters legion in all it's amazing glory?

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

@ Nevelon: Oh, definitely -- I don't think I could ever stop hacking up those little plastic men (and women), even if I wanted to

@ Viterbi: Cheers! The somewhat more controlled look does fit my personal lore for Khorne's Eternal Hunt, but it's good to hear that it also seems to work from a modeling perspective.

@ Syro_: Hmm, I guess that must have been in ...2016, shockingly enough. That being said, the sheer task of setting it all up - preferably outside - to be photgraphed is a bit of a logistical nightmare at this point. Plus there are parts of the army (rather large parts, I am afraid...) that no longer represent my current standard. Oh well...

In the meantime, while Nurgle's Rot keeps scything through continental Europe, and with all kinds of things being cancelled left and right, I find myself with some extra hobby time on my hands -- what a weird dissonance...

Anyway, here's a short update:

First up, regarding the latest World Eaters model with the two-handed axe, someone over at the Bolter & Chainsword requested a scale comparison shot with a standard Cadian, and I thought you guys might appreciate that kind of picture as well:

The closest thing to a standard Cadian I had was my older conversion for Inquisitor Antrecht, but he's mostly based on Cadian parts, so it should work.

Also, while I was messing around with GS tubing for a current INQ28 project, I took a moment to give that icon bearer another tweak:

One of my favourite parts about the old model that inspired this conversion (shown above) were always the cables and tubes visible underneath the shoulder pad: I loved how those hinted at the inner workings of the armour. Anyway, seeing how this model was an attempt to channel the older piece, I added two lengths of GS tubing to replicate that particular element.

Also, on a related note, do you guys think the model works better with the pistol arm turned downwards?

And finally, POP QUIZ: Any ideas what this is going to be?

As always, let me know what you think!

Haha, sorry, neither of those legions, guys. Keep guessing

Also, let me just point out that, technically speaking, that's not an aquila on the breastplate, but rather an Imperialis...

That Icon Bearer! He's almost a complete mirror of the original dude.Right down to the bandolier and the knife on his hip. I personally like the pistol aimed forward. Helps balance the "weight" of the model I think.

Viterbi nailed almost exactly my thoughts on the squad. They're such a departure from what you generally think about World Eaters, the rabidly frothing mad men charging forward.

By contrast, these guys are almost static, or are in some cases. It really makes for an interesting take on bezerkers.

Cheers for the kind words, man!

As for the other model, since nobody seems willing to take the bait (*sigh*), let's have the reveal right now:

Seeing how my latest World Eaters project is also about creating models that are inspired by seminal artwork or classic sculpts, I have been thinking about a model to represent Lheorvine Ukris, from Aaron Dembski-Bowden's Black Legion novel series, for a while -- another model, that is, seeing how I already built a first version a while ago:

“Guest stars” like this are always a bit of an iffy affair, because they don’t really fit into the narrative for a homegrown warband. But I couldn’t help myself, I had to use the excellent new kits to build another version of Lheorvine. So here’s the artwork I used as my main reference, once again:

And here’s the conversion I came up with:

With the exception of the Primaris breastplate (used for the “Imperialis” symbol) and a head from the AoS first edition starter box Blood Warriors (I simply *love* those helmets!), the conversion is mostly based on parts from the new vanilla CSM (with maybe a Havoc bit added in here and there). I tried to cram in as many elements from the artwork as I could while also not wanting to make the model seem overly busy.

As always, let me know what you think!

That's a nice conversion, can't wait to see it painted up! Really evokes the art work.

Lheo is an awesome character, and I enjoyed your version of him but did feel he was a little spindly / not as imposing as that art. So props on Round 2 Decided no bare arm on this one, guessing for lack of a decently scaled one? Ork arms only go so far

Once again, that is an excellent kitbash! The only thing I think doesn't work is the gorget. I find it really distracts from the very angry head.
Other then that.

Cheers for the kind words, guys!

@ Boss Salvage: He actually does have a - partially - bare arm, at least: His right arm came from the Blood Warriors and is bare from the elbow upwards , although the pauldron obscures most of the effect In the end, I decided that having the bolter arms line up properly was ultimately more crucial for the look of the model.

@ Snrub: The novel describes him as wearing a breastplate with an Imperialis, so what was I to do? In all fairness, though, I think the paintjob should blend the parts together a bit better, plus the gorget has saved me the task of having to convert the helmet's mouth section any further

So here's a new update for you:

First up, I have made some final tweaks to the icon bearer:

Seeing how I have become much more proficient at creating GS cabling over the last ten days or so, I decided to rip off the previous cabling and re-do that part for a smoother finish. While I was at it, I also inserted a really thin wire underneath the cable, in order to bring the design even more in line with the model that inspired it in the first place. Then I replaced the pistol with a different model, because the ammo feed on the previous weapon no longer behaved in tune with gravity. And finally, I've added a length of chain to his right wrist to feature yet another element from the old metal icon bearer. But now he's ready for undercoating -- if all goes well, I'll take a stab at painting him this weekend.

There's also this guy that I have been working on lately:

The model obviously still needs *lots* of work. I am also having mixed feelings about this one, and here's why: The model started as a late-night attempt of wanting to do something with that leftover CSM champ breastplate and one of the - supremely awkward - Wrathmonger/Skullreaper bodies (those really haven't aged all that well). So it mainly became a case of mashing together many different bitz with lots of plastic glue.

Now on the one hand, I do think the model is already looking pretty cool. But there is also a 'structural dodginess', for lack of a better word, to the whole thing (on account of basically brute-forcing the conversion process) that I normall try to avoid on my current Astartes conversions. Anyway, TL;DR: Still lots of fine tuning needed.

Here's a look at the model's back:

Now let me remove that backpack, to show you how awkward it all still is:

At least I have already managed to graft on an official Astartes backpack connection port ™, but I think this illustrates how I'll still have to make quite a few adjustments before I can call the model done.

As always, let me know what you think!

Oh I have no issue with the imperial breast plate. I'm all for novel-to-model accuracy!

Ah that is a reasonable consideration. And as you say, once it's painted, who's gonna notice!

My apologies, you've clearly got his bare arm requirements handled

Speaking of Blood Warriors, new lad continues putting that kit to good grimdark work

Nice to see you back! Just a few weeks ago I was wondering how you were doing when someone posted a pic of an UM dread they painted about to step on a Word Bearer. Made me think of all the great mangled base decorations“dioramas” you did with your Ultras.

Those guys look brutal, as I’d expect from you.
