Time for an update! Here’s a look at the finished Chaos Lord with jump pack, Huntmaster Charun:

I painted him according to my standard World Eaters recipe. However, I added a little pop to his sword by using my favourite colour ever, Vallejo’s Halcon Milenario Turquoise. Quite fitting for a daemon weapon of Khorne (and a nice contrast to his armour), I think.

I also finally added the Maxmini jump pack to the model. Fortunately, everything fit together quite nicely. I had to weigh down the base by glueing in a coin, though, to prevent the model from toppling over all the time.

All in all, I’m rather pleased with the model. I think the paintjob really brings him to life. Incidentally, the first game I ever used him in really transformed him from a playing piece into a character. In case you're interested, you can read a battle report of sorts here: http://eternalhunt.wordpress.com/2012/03/09/haestia-must-burn-a-battle-report-of-sorts/

And here's a little piece of background for him:

Lord Charun, Master of the Harriers

Charun is the commander of the 4th assault company’s corps of jump infantry, the “Harriers”. For these warriors, the hunt from the sky is the ultimate thrill. In battle, they try to reach the enemy lines as quickly as possible, the howling sound of their jump packs driving fear into the hearts of their opponents. The Harriers are wild and proud warriors, and first among their number is Huntmaster Charun.

Where his fellow officer Bardolf is purposeful and taciturn, Charun is mercurial and haughty, and sometimes arrogant to a fault. In battle, the thrill of the hunt sometimes threatens to overpower him, and while it turns him into a warrior without match, there are those in the company who fear that Charun is too far gone already, as much a danger to his allies as to his enemies.

Few would dare utter such words to his face though, lest they face his wrath. Singing daemon weapon in hand and murder in his gaze, the Master of the Harriers is a frightening sight to friends and enemies alike.

As always, thanks for looking! C&C very welcome!

Hey badgerman,

ah, I guess you're referring to the dread? I'm happy that I didn't disappoint ;-)

Concerning more converted vehicles, the bad news is that I'm really an infantryman at heart, that is to say I ususally find converting infantry models far more satisfying than working on vehicles. That said, converting that dread was so much fun that I almost immediately started on a little partner for him: Expect to see him here sooner rather than later

Anyway, thanks for looking!

Here's something new to look at. Unfortunately, it's not a World Eater

I've been in a bit of a motivational slump painting-wise lately, so when inspiration came calling yesterday, I didn't care for the details. I sat down to paint a Chaos Space Marine that I had built ages ago to serve as a Word Bearer.

As you can see, he had a change of empoyer somewhere along the way and now boasts the colours of the Iron Warriors. While the World Eaters remain my favourite traitor legion, the Iron Warriors and Word Bearers easily tie for second place. And for some time now, I’ve been collecting suitable bits in order to convert some Iron Warriors legionnaires. I have no intention of starting an Iron Warriors force, but I might try something smaller, a Kill Team for Operation Killzone, for example.

When painting the model, I chose a "quick and dirty" approach. The resulting paintjob is a little more sloppy than I would have liked, but it turned out alright, I guess. My hand wasn’t steady enough to manage some truly convincing hazard stripes, and there’s a couple of rough spots on the model, but I think it’s not too bad for a test piece. At least, I managed to get the Decal on the legionnaire’s right shoulder pad to look halfway decent.

There may be a couple of small touch ups left, but all in all I am reasonably pleased with the model. It was good to just paint something on a whim. And I learned not to underestimate a colour scheme just because it's 80% Boltgun Metal

Thanks for looking!

An update, just in time for the weekend

Alas, my newest conversion will not be strengtening the ranks of Khorne's Eternal Hunt: The Iron Warrior I painted left me with an appetite for more, so I ended up building a Warsmith:

It's not my fault, though: Biohazard is currently discussing the conversion of his own Chaos Lord in his World Eaters thread here:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/120/399556.page

All that conversion goodness got me in the mood for another Termie Lord conversion, so there you have it. I already built quite a few of these, so it was a nice challenge to try and give him a distinct Iron Warriors look:

I wanted to include a few visual clues to his affiliation, so I chose to give him a hammer and went for the bionic head from the loyal marines. I also used a different choice of pauldrons to add a subtle Pre-Heresy flavour to him and to bulk him out a little.

The hammer is from the Ogre Kingdoms Ironguts kit. It may look a little crude for an Iron Warrior, but I imagine that it was constructed from a stone he tore from one of the fortresses he brought down - maybe it even came from the Imperial palace on Terra

In the end, I lost my mind and added that sinister claw from the Dark Eldar Talos kit. It may be slightly too large for the model, but it looks very dark and threatening. And its somewhat advanced design is a nice fit for the Iron Warriors in my opinion.

For the time being, the cloak is just tacked on, since attaching it permanently would make the model very difficult to paint. It helps to add some stature to the Warsmith, however, so I will definitely keep it. I also added a shield that will offer me a nice occasion to add some additional hazard stripes to the paintjob.

I have made up my mind to build a small Iron Warriors Killteam as a side project, and this guy will be leading them into battle. That gives me an opportunity to build some cool IW models without having to start yet another army

So there you go, my little weekend surprise Oh, and I'll definitely be dealing with my World Eaters next, so rest assured that this thread is in no imminent danger of being taken over by the Iron Warriors

C&C are always welcome. Let me know what you think!

Looks good I really like the hammer and the tilting plate attached to the fist. Nice touch. Where are the shoulder pauldrons from? I like the chain detail hanging from them another nice little touch.

Hah! I am quite proud of those: They are from the Chaos Marauders, specifically parts from the unit musician's drum.Go figure! They do a rather nice job as Pre-Heresy shoulder pads, don't they?
The little chain is from the ever useful Bloodcrushers kit. I am always hesitant to use one of those little icons, because they are pretty hard to come by, but it worked so well with this guy, so I had no choice.

Biohazard wrote:I think he needs something between his legs as well though.

Don't we all? You're definitely on to something, though! I really want to use a loincloth or a dangling trophy or what have you. The problem is that a skull and chain will look too much like something a World Eater would wear. The chain loincloth from the Terminator Lord box is quite nice, but it would just end up as one more part painted silver on the finished model. That leaves the "normal" loincloth that comes with the kit, but I am not quite sold on that option. Any good idea would be greatly appreciated!

Why not paint the chain in a gold colour? Matching some of the trim on the Termi lord? It would look good and help him stand out.

You have some good conversions and paint jobs, but those old Berzerker figures are really starting to show their age. I hope they have new ones with the next Chaos release.

True! Here's hoping the new models will be totally awesome! However, you can still get some reasonably good results with the old models if you're willing to work on the poses and mix and match a bit. The Berzerker models posted in this thread so far are all rather old, straightforward builds. Here's an example of some newer Berzerkers that were still build with some part of the old kit:

I think the old parts are still salveagable if you are willing to put a bit of work into it

@Biohazard:

Hmm, a gold chain might looked too pimped out for what I have in mind. The leather loincloth that comes with the Space Marine Commander kit might work, but there's no way I am going to buy that kit just for one bit. Seems I'll have to dig through my bitzbox to see if I find something that does the job. I am also tempted - for the first time ever - to add some kind of banner to the model's back. Not so sure about that one yet, though...

The gold could be heavily washed to darken it up and weather beat it. I like backbanners when they are done well. What are you thinking of doing?

Made in de

Germany

Hmm, not sure yet: I might just use a regular Space Marine backbanner (I have several to choose from) as a base. Clip off the skull or Aquila on top and replace it with an impaled Space Marine helmet (to be painted in the colours of the Imperial Fists of course ). I am honestly no good at freehanding, so I would probably add an Iron Warriors decal as the main design element, maybe over a background of hazard stripes. Not so sure about that yet, since I often find backbanners a little silly... I somehow think I need to add a bit of height to him, but I don't want to use the normal trophy racks...

Come to think about it, I still have a leftover backbanner from the Pedro Kantor model. File off the name, and it might look great on the base, painted in IF colours and trampled into the mud

Thanks man! The hammer was really a spontaneous idea. I was a little afraid at first that it might look too primitive, but then I realised that it looks like it could be a stone from one of the fortresses conquered by the Warsmith, taken as a trophy and incorporated into his equipment as some kind of trademark weapon

Ha! I know that feeling Speaking of spontaneous ideas, though, here's another one of mine that didn't work out as intended:

After building my first Chaos Dreadnought had turned out to be such a lot of fun, I really wanted to build a second one right away. Did I mention that I lack any sort of impulse control? Oh well…

Once again, I had a couple of things I wanted to achieve when building the model:

1. again, I wanted to avoid the refridgerator look as much as possible
2. this second Dread was going to be a lot shootier than the first (who totally focused on CC). I felt that the plastic Venerable Dreadnought kit was the way to go here, considering all the weapon options included.
3. I really, REALLY wanted to use this head for my Dread:

Anyone recognise this? I thought that it would be really cool to feature a part of one of my old toys in a conversion. Plus I think the head has a bit of a resemblance with the head from the original FW World Eaters Dread. But that might just be my imagination. In any case, I liked the slightly inhuman look created by the single eyeslit, a bit like this.

So I immediately bought the Dread kit, hurried home, broke out my knife and yellow-tac and made a mockup of the thing. Here’s what I got:

As much as I love the head, there was no getting around the fact that it was simply too big: It did not fit between the shoulders, like I had intended it to, so it was left facing slightly downwards. And with such a large head, the Dread looked somewhat misshapen – and not in a good way. So, with a heavy heart, I discarded the head that had inspired the whole conversion in the first place. Don’t feel bad for it, though: One day, its moment of glory will come. For example, if I ever do a Dreadknight conversion, then…no!…must…resist…temptation…

Fortunately, there was a good alternative: I still had some leftover parts from my Defiler conversion, and my fellow Khornate slaughterers Biohazard and Guitarasmus turned out to be very inspirational with their own Dreads. So I got to work again and ended up with this:

Much better! While this version is maybe less original, the head just fits better with the rest of the body. I changed the position of the left arm to give the model a more interesting silhouette (and to make it look like it was celebrating a successfully destroyed enemy vehicle or something like that). I also wanted the Dread to be standing on something with his left foot, so I used a sandbag as a placeholder. A stylised maw from the Ogre kingdoms was once again used to represent the World Eaters legion badge.

While there was some detailing left to do, I felt that this worked as a basic pose. However, in contrast to my CC Dread, a bit of thought would be necessary to figure out how to best build the different weapon options and give them the “Chaos treatment”…

Anyway, still a bit of work to do, but I'm definitely headed in the right direction

Nicely done! I like the gut plate on the legs. I'm not so sure of the position of the arm though. For the head to give it a more dynamic look I stuffed the back with a ball of greenstuff and added some cables cut from backpacks and other weapons. It adds a little more detail and the ball allows more options for posing. Good work brother look forward to more updates.

@ Flachzange: Vielen Dank für die Blumen! Also, on the matter of the warsmith's weapon: STOP! Hammer Time !

@ Biohazard: I think it's fairly plain to see that my Dread was heavily inspired by yours and GuitaRasmus'. I love your version with the added cables, however I chose something slightly different for my Dread. It'll all become clear in the next update. On the matter of the left arm: Rest assured that it'll look somewhat less awkward in the finished version -- at least that's what I hope

Your warsmith looks great. love the claw!! i remembered an idea that i've had for a while but not really had a chance to use it; you could give him a chain cloak, made from cheap jewllery chain or GS.

Thanks, guys!

Chaos Emperor, that's a nice idea! I wouldn't even actually have to use jeweler's chain or GS: The rider from the WFB Manticore kit comes with a perfect chain cloak! However, I have yet to convince myself to buy that kit. All the Chaos Lord and Sorcerer bitz are fantastic, and the Manticore could arguably be used as a giant Fleshhound of Khorne or a Chaos Spawn or what have you. Haven't made the decision yet, though. Perhaps I'll wait until I have an idea of what the new Chaos releases may look like.

Anyway, thanks for the idea!

Alright, everybody, here's the latest news on my WIP Chaos Dread:

After deciding on a pose and overall look for the Dread, the only thing left for completing the main body was to tidy up the conversion work and to add some suitable bits to achieve the chaos look I wanted. Here’s what I ended up with:

Fortunately, the Venerable Dread kit is chock-full of different options – not only for the weapons but also for the sarcophagus, the shoulders, shinguards, armour plates etc. I added a couple of plates which I decorated with Chaos stars. The shinguards were also “chaosified”. After some thinking, I decided to do away with the armoured gorget since I really liked the look of the orginial Chaos Space Marine’s torso wired into the machine. I kept the halo-like trophy rack from the Chaos vehicle sprue, but decided to use a different variant. The sandbag placeholder was replaced with a skeleton. I know it’s fairly unrealistic that a mere skeleton should resist the weight of the Dread’s leg, and it also doesn’t make that much sense in the first place, but it looked cool enough, so I kept it.

Like I already said, I wanted to change the pose of the left arm to break up the silhouette of the model a bit. I used all kinds of cables and machine bits to detail the joint between the torso and left arm of the Dread. While I was once again tempted to use chainblade fingers, the Pre-Heresy-style powerfist was just too cool to pass over. The flamer was a must though, even though a Bolter might have made slightly more sense for a shooty Dread.

I also added a skull-and-chain combo to the reactor on the back of the model. I didn’t use any dragon heads as muzzles for the exhaust pipes this time around, since that would probably have looked a little silly with four pipes in place. As a final touch, I used a leftover skeleton head as a head for the Dread pilot. I made sure to use a head that looked properly damaged and disfigured. I like the idea that you’ll be able to take of the larger skull mask to look at the Marine’s “true” face underneath.

And with that, the body was basically finished. All that was left to do was to build and detail the different weapon options. Like I said, the Venerable Dread kit offers lots of choices in this regard and comes with a Lascannon, Plasma Cannon and Assault cannon that can be easily exchanged, even on the finished model. I wanted to keep the Las and Plasma, but replace the Assault cannon with an older looking twin-linked Autocannon. And I would definitely need a Heavy Bolter as well. Fortunately, I still had some leftover parts from the Furioso Kit, so it was all just a matter of kitbashing and careful cutting. But that is a story for next time.

Until then, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Thanks mate! All the loyal Dread kits are reasonably simple to convert to Chaos, but the genius of the Venerable Dread is that it's basically all there in the kit! You just need a couple of extra chaos bits and you're done. I cannot recommend this kit highly enough! It's almost a little sad that the probable release of a new Chaos Dread kit will make converting obsolete
