At-43 The Comic, a forum member who has more money than sense, and a single website indicate some level of Hobby, but can it really be compared to the one involved with GW stuff?
Besides from insulting one forum member (at least on the continent we would call it insulting), yes they in a way define our hobby.
The vast majority of AT-43 players won't repaint. Nor will they convert. Some will get the comic, sure, but I doubt it's circulation is terribly high.
Actually quite a lot do some kind of repaint, even if it is only some drybrushing and inking (which in the end looks better than 70% of most other games armies). And many do convert, starting with repositioning their walkers (they have many articulation points and without having to use any conversion tool you already can reposition them to quite some degree), redesigning the base of their mini, giving a different paint job, etc. There are even quite some complete rebuilts that are rather breathtaking.
GW have the Black Library to sustain you. They have several company sponsored and highly prodigious painting competitions.
They are buliding up their portfolio and competitions have been around since Confrotation joined the market. Now AT minis are joining the competition, so what?
I fear what you have pointed out is just a collection of hardcore nutters you find in any walk of life. I've heard of people painting up RISK counters, and thats still not exactly a hobby.
Most are regular players who normally would not even come close to have an army ready in such a short time.
Besides, calling it a kids game is tha silliest thing I ever heard. the average age is somewhere around 27. Many family fathers play AT because they have not that much time to waste and are suckers for a nice tactical game. They never have the time to indulge in the full hobby and you think you´ve got th right to belittle them? Besides, they have quite some money to spent.
That´s quite different from the policy GW is pursuing at the moment aiming at the kids. Just check a GW store and watch them caring more for kiddies than for the veterans (who they sometimes even call a nuisance, at least that´s what some shop guys over here called us veterans).
Plastic Multipart etc, coming out next year. This is Rackham we are discussing. I'll believe it if and when the stuff is actually release.
Actually I've already seen the sprues for those kits, it is coming.
And I do play both games, I do have nearly all AT armies and a 4000+ Tau and a Elysian army that I am at the moment bringing up to full strength.

Anything you do outside of your normal occupation is a hobby, so yes, painting the little army men from risk is exactly a hobby. Surprising how many people still believe GW when they say the are The Hobby.

Did I say that GW are the hobby? No, again, I didn't.
There is a definite *GW* Hobby, but that is part of and yet seperate from the wider Wargaming Hobby. How so? GW are unique in their approach in that you can buy all you'll ever need to hobby game from one of their stores. Paints, brushes, rules, models, board, measuring tape, tools, glue, flock, sand, terrain. Every last thing, available from GW in one form or another. The other Wargames companies do not. Therefore, as I said, there is a definite GW Hobby, in so far as they can supply you with all you need. This does not however, make them the entire Wargame Hobby.
Do people actively seek to misinterpret everything I say?

Warhammer 40,000 is a hobby. Mad Doc Grotsnik wrote:I just don't feel it can really be as attention holding as a game with a Hobby behind it. That point was never clear in any of your posts, you just continuously said GW was a hobby, AT-43 was not. The only one misinterpreting here is you. As a side not, I did read all your posts in the thread word for word, not skimmed, as did my wife, who doesn't game or care about 40K Vs AT-43 in general nor know either rule set. I wanted an objective, unbiased reader. Your supposed point doesn't come across to either of us until this most recent post(she too believes you're only calling one a hobby).
