-First, when I heard about the drybrushing technique I thought I had to move fast over the piece and use a large brush. That was a mistake and made for bad results.

And as far as knowing when "enough is enough" you will be able to see the change after every pass.

Again, this is how I do this and others might have a better technique.

1. I use the Citadel Standard Brush for most of my drybrush stuff.

2. Use paint right out of the pot, no dilution. I find when diluted the paint finds its way deeper than I intend.

3. DB vs. Layer Blend.. I found that even if you use a larger brush after the smaller one you cannot achieve the same effect so you must use the same technique as layer blending and highlight without covering up the color you previously applied.

And that's basically it.

Purchased the HORDE battle group set of Legion of Everblight. And grabbed the Carnivean heavy warbeast out of the box and started painting.. (dont worry I was just messing with the paint scheme. the mold lines will be gone )

My first privateer press model I'm also using this stuff from Liquitex on the base for the first time, called Resin Sand. I'm very impressed and will use this on all my bases. Its basically like sand mixed with acrylic gel and its plays like penut butter.. form foot prints can also add texture for mud on boots and cloaks. $11 for 237ml.

Hello LBursey

Love your stuff, very cool - any further progress on the CSM army?

FWIW, I agree that the black background doesn't let you see the details of the figure as well.

Perhaps something like this?

Also, interested to see you paint the face first on the figure - I normally leave it for last, doing the large armour/body areas first. Is it so you can get in and do heavy detail on the face?

Cheers

Tim

Tim thanx for stopping by and taking a liking to my stuff. As far as "painting faces first" I'll assume you are referring to my term lord and catachan fighter. I actually base everything up first then start on details but yes, I do tend to work on the face and anything that looks interesting, more in the beginning. I use to save it for last because drybrushing with large brushes would always get on my faces. But now I use small brushes and small strokes. So it doesn't really matter where I start.

As for the background.. I spend a lot of time on my computer and the dark background is just easier on the eyes.. and it has great color vibrance. In your version the overall outline of the model is more defined but the model itself looses it color strength and looks a little dull.

Some really superb work in here LBursley. Well done. Just wondering how you've done the detailing on the most recent model? Is it something like bleached bone with brown inks? Looks very effective and somehow 'old'.

That Lucius is looking really good. I had filed that fig under crap as the Heavy metal paint job was really awful, but with limited palette it looks really nice.

Thanx! When you say bleach bone are you talking about the faces on the armor? If so it was painted red gore first the dry brushed with dwarf flesh, then elf flesh, then devlan mud wash.

Lol, Yeah I looked up some pix online to see different ways people had painted him, then when I got an idea of what I wanted I started on him. This model was fun to paint and less of a pain than Abaddon.

@ Reecius Thanx for the compliment! But I've never been to Game Empire.

I'm actually in North County and the closest game place is Pair-a-dice Games in Vista. But since they are closing soon, I'll be getting all my stuff from Game Empire.

Do you game there?

Yeah, i sued to live in SD, great place to game. They have weekly fantasy, 40K, warmachine, hordes and FoW leagues, and a huge area for gaming. They also have monthly tournaments.

Also, a few golden demon winning painters hang out there who are always up for trading tips. I love that game store, one of the best I have ever been to.

LOL never thought of that !

-UPDATE-

Started on Huron

Base colors on armor and did most of the skin and bone on his head. Skin still needs a little more highlight and I'll throw some purple in the recesses. Skin looks too "alive" while I want to give him some "necrosis" along the edges as if the edges of skin are dead.

Nice work on Lucius.

I wasn't so keen on the Abaddon with hair down, but the paint job really makes it look way better.

I really like the Terminator Lord, and the way you did the highlighting, shading, etc. But it doesn't seem like you finished the base.

Huron is good, but I think the skin looks good enough.

Excellent Lucius. I really hadn't been able to tell how cool that model could be. The flesh tone face armor really does it.

Also, same model. Are those air bubbles in the blue tube? They really work man! And I just learned a new trick.

Good project. Keep it up!

@V0ld- I've painted 3 Abaddon's for other people and when it came to mine I decided to let his hair down cause it went better with his mask i think. And for the Term Lord and his base, he has never been 100% finished. The pix I posted were just some paint tests for him he's been stripped and re-primed since then and ready for the final paint.

@Shep- GOOD EYE! YES those are bubbles. I only did it to the blue because when I did it to the green and red, it looked like Christmas lights. Also tried to put bubbles in the blue tank but I couldn't get the bubbles small enough to look good. Any ideas are welcome!

Huron Update

Worked in the red on his armor. Still need to clean up the grey tubes, his weapon, backpack details, claw.. basically everything thats still Black Primer
And no the gold is not finished. As it sits right now : 1:1 scorched brown/shining gold base, pure shining gold, and devlan mud wash.
Just trying to be better at posting my stopping points.

@LB how do you make the background black which option if its from photoshop?

Just curiouse is there certain reason why you chose black background instead of the normal white ones?

Most of my models use dark colors and I find when I use the black background the colors are more vibrant. The model pictures are taken in a white light box but I delete the white in photoshop the best I can Also I prime black, so using the dark background lets the unpainted parts fade out into the black while the painted areas are obvious.

The black background makes the paintjobs look very muted, but that might just be because I'm used to white for most paint photos
