Just catching this blog for the first time!

Really fantastic work all around. I love the airbrush work on the vehicles.

Will have to dig around some more through the log and read up on it all.

Keep at it

Airbrush template for the skulls?

Heh, yup, I made some stencil cutouts. Was a pain sizing them and doing it properly but the end results were worth it. I did the template using just paper and had A LOT of overspray since it didn't stick to the surface flush.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Finished off Brother Corbulo tonight. Drilled out the grail and filled out the cup with some water effects with red ink...

Nice Corbulo, my only somewhat negative comment is that the chalice is too full and the blood should be slopping out the side at that angle with that depth if you know what I mean.

Can't wait for the next update.

Excellent stuff as usual. The small touches on Corbulo like the grail, vials on the belt and the free hand chapter symbol bring him a lot of character.

Wow mate. I just got an Iwata Revolution and I am about to let loose on some IG tanks. Any tips? Was there a tutorial you used? How long did it take to get control over it?

Great stuff.

Yup, the angel of the surface is tilted and not level with the ground unfortunately. The actual water effects I used was woodland scenics and is really horrible stuff in terms of viscosity and actual volume it loses after it's completely dried. Picture was taken when it was wet and now it's actually about 3/4 of the way full now that's finally dry.

Be ready to spend a lot of time doing trail and error. I watched a miniature mentor video on airbrushing a dreadnought taught by Mathieu Fontaine. It's what prompted me to buy the airbrush though he makes it look a lot easier in the video. Dialing in the proper air pressure and getting the right paint consistency mix is crucial. I usually use about 2-1 mix of water and paint at around 15 PSI. You can find general airbrush instructional videos on youtube that will teach you the basics like dagger strokes. Also, be prepared to clean out your airbrush a lot since they do have a tendency to clog frequently. Good luck!

I might at a later time. The start of this thread already has WIP pics of my airbrushed tac marines and later pics does show the various stages of my rhino/vindicator during painting. Not really that much additional info on how I paint them, it's all pretty simple. If you have any specific questions, ask away.

Finished off my Furioso last night. Not happy how the banner turned out but I guess I'll live with it. I botched it a few times before getting to the current version which is somewhat acceptable. Put some additional work on the base so that my dreads will all have different bases. The presculpted base of the dreadnought is a bit too plain and common these days.

1st - Excellent dread, although I feel a touch more freehand would be cool, mix in a bit more of the mustard yellow hue and maybe a chevron or 2 somewhere?

2nd - For the tutorials, I am more curious to see how you are holding the airbrush, what goes on in what order, the minute details as opposed to an overall vehicle or whatever. Particularly curious if you are using masks or other things held in your other hand to block the spray at points, or if you are just freehanding it completely. It was a question aimed squarely at the red. I own an airbrush now and am going to start having a more thorough go with it, so that is why I am interested in seeing more about the technique itself as opposed to wip's if that makes sense?

I like the brighter red on the models moreso than the darker red on the dred, but it is still a great dred. I would like more freehand on it as well. It looks a bit too plain, and I always had that issue with dreds since if they are suppose to entomb a hero than i would expect a ton of decorate drawings, names, combat medals, etc. That may be just me thou.

I hold the brush like I would hold a pen or pencil. The smaller details won't be conveyed through just pictures. Best thing to do is to youtube airbrush instructional videos which there are plenty of. You don't have to limit yourself to just model airbrush either, the canvas airbrush might be more beneficial when first starting out and will teach you much of the basics such as setup/cleaning/maintenance of your airbrush/compressor.

Thanks and yes I do agree. I should have placed more items such as purity seals and whatnot on the front armor which does loook a bit sparse. I still have 3 more dreads to assemble and paint so those will get more details added.

Just finished off my Dante model. Was fun painting this model as I got to experiment on how to do the gold which I'll be using for my sang. guard once I get around to those. I particularly like the look of this model as well and not sure why many people complain about it, imo it fits fine in the current range and looks better than the sanguinator.

Let me first say, fantastic work. This is turning out to easily be one of the best looking BA armies I've seen. I love the darker feel as opposed to the cartoonish coloring most of them have. I have only one small nitpick. Your OSL effects on the Dev squad are fantastic, I actually caught myself squinting a bit when looking at them, however some of vehicle lights, particularly the headlights are less so. It might be a trick of the camera, but it seems like they are lacking the really light/white highlights that make it truely feel like a light source. The actual spill of the lighting onto the armor is almost the same shade as the areas that would be the brightest part of the actual lamp itself, which kills some of the effect.

Example:

In the top pic, if you look at the headlights compared to the search light, the search light has white/almost white highlights where the headlights are far more muted. It could be an actual reflection of the lighting used for the photo, but regardless it shows the desired effect. It's a minor thing and it's really the only flaw I see, as everything else is fantastic, but I thought I'd point it out as it's something that can be fixed fairly easily.

Again, great work and I really look forward to seeing the progress

Thanks though the highlights and searchlights are done with varying intensity on purpose. I'd assume a search light would be a lot brighter which is why there's a stronger highlight near the center.
