Look, I'm sorry if my comments derailed the thread. Obviously I hit a little too close to home for some people and made them angry.
Here's an example of how to paint darker skin, BuFFo. WARNING - a little light nudity on the model, but I chose it because it's a good example and it's using GW paints which people are probably more familiar with.
Yeah, most people don,t like being called a racist, never mind that the accusation is based on a wild straw man argument.

While many sci-fi books indicate that far in the future, the human race will all be one homogeneous light brown, people are different skin tones and wide, flatter noses on earth for a reason, not random mutation. It would stand to reason that on the infinite worlds of the imperium, there would be many hot grassland type planets where essentially everyone is black over the tens of thousands of years of normal human evolution, just like there would be icy space wolf planets were essentially everyone would nordic, and so on. It seems like the only thing that would make sense in my humble opinion. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oops, Elector already made my point. My bad.

I'm not particularly enamored of the model, but that's a terrific tutorial for painting black skin.

Since this is already at the top of the first page I won't feel bad for bumping..
Like has been said, obviously paint it how you want. In all likelihood it's just a simple subconscious disposition to one's own likeness. Nothing wrong with that and no reason to make it more than it is.
As for trying to come up with a reason to support a more or less singular "race," like people have also said, fast forward 38,000 years of interbreeding with relatively little natural selection (by that i mean no or few reproductive advantages favoring a specific race. I haven't read much fluff though so correct me if at some point in the future it becomes less egalitarian than i'm imagining.) and you will undoubtedly see the homogenization of the human race. Now whether that manifests itself in a "white" skin tone or what, I can't say, but I could posit that living in hives and smog-ridden atmospheres and such would veer it towards lighter skin as there's less need to block UV. In addition, I would say (again, remind me of the fluff) that when the human race was sown across the galaxy that they would, at that time, be homogenous- however what happens after that, I'd presume, would be largely dependent on the world (ie: desert world close to a sun leads to darker skin, ice planets/hives tend towards light skin). So it's not necessarily wildly illogical to presume an army is represented just fine by being a single color (black/white/whatever)- you can just back it up by saying they're from the same/similar world/environments.
Also, this was a few pages ago but is really, really, really bothering me
Shenra wrote:Likewise, a pale skinned person will get incredibly dark if they move to the equator and stay outside, uncovered everyday. Now you multiply that by hundreds of generations and it gets into your genes. That's called evolution, folks.
Having ancestors whose friends all died from skin cancer but they survived because they had slightly darker skin = natural selection = "evolution"
Having ancestors who all got tans and it "got in your genes" = Lamarckian evolution = well, not quite..

Here's a thought. It's 40000 years in the future. I reckon by that time every genome will have mixed by then.
So everyone would be pretty much the same as everyone else so they would have one kind of look.
Not sure what it would be though. It would depend on dominant and recessive genes.
Not knowing much about it I'd guess that eventually everyone would end up with a white skin tone.
I'm basing this on the belief that we all started off in Africa (cradle of humanity) and must have all been dark skinned in the beginning but now there's white skin tones.
Spacemarine skin can change colour or orignallly it could IIRC. The breakdown in the Salamanders DNA made their Skin fixed on black and their eyes red.

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

IS there some terrible secret as to why there are no blacks in my IG army? Some horrible, subliminal, deep seated racism that is only one step away from putting my Catachans in pointed hoods and Cadians in Nazi regalia?
It's mostly because I'm lazy, and don't feel like mixing a second color of paint, that's why.

If I was going to cast a Warhammer 40,000 live action film (and for the record I think a live-action film would be a bad idea), I think I'd mostly cast huge black dudes as the Space Marines. Basically Tiny Lister as the Chapter Master, Michael Clarke Duncan as the First Captain, a cameo by Shaq, and the writer from the Underworld films as the protagonist (no Ving Rhames though - too small!).

I'd have to say that, given that my first army has green skin (and only green skin, as far as I know; orks are, by definition, not blue) and my second and third armies either don't show skin or are white because that's what happens when you come from a freezing cold death world, I don't see racial diversity as a huge issue. Aside from the fact that making a range of different skin colours is a bit of a bother when you just want to get your damn models done and out of the way, it's also quite difficult to spend the time necessary to get a decent representation of black skin tones.

Exactly Ugavine, I just don't think about it. I'm half black half white and I just don't give a damn.
The salamanders space marine chapter are ALL black.
The catachan and cadian concept art have quite a few black soldiers.
Inquisitor Toth from the first dawn of war was black.
Garett Augustus Morgan, an african american scientist invented the gas mask so you can easily paint DKOK or steel legion black if you want.
