When they update my Tau army to make it function properly again I might consider getting back in.

My mech-tau army was gutted by the defensive weapons rules in 5e, totally ceased to function properly. I spent well over $1k on models and paint building an army that matched my playstyle,
I understand that certain things are going to go up and down in effectiveness with rules changes, but I shouldn't have to totally change it's playstyle and buy $500 more in models just to make it semi functional again simply due to an edition change.

Their horrible game design and update schedule have turned me off of their product, likely for good

What I don’t like about their business model is that it relies on getting players to buy multiple armies or make multiple updates to an existing one. During any edition, GW will only update the rules and models for a handful of factions as well as making extensive use of power creep to shift the balance towards the newer factions. In order for a player to “keep up”, they either have buy one of the armies that have been updated or extensively tool up their existing one to cope. Either way, it’s a sneaky tactic designed to get players to buy more models.

Personally I wish GW followed Privateer Press’ business model whereas all factions are updated during an edition change (and maintained via errata). Players are enticed to buy more models and books via yearly expansion books that introduced new fluff, models and rules for all factions. PP models also come with a rules card which allows PP to release new models for factions without updating the army book or the entire faction. Additionally, the super-cheap nature of the start boxes also encourages players to buy multiple armies.

They did that with vehicle kits back in 2nd edition where they would print the datafax in WD and IIRC, they would include the card in the box with the model.

Nope, but I have always had a pretty even spread of 'games to play and mini companies that I purchase from. It really makes me giggle when people go on about how their list has been nerfed in the new book/edition/whatever and don't see that a tired and stale game have been revitalised by something new. Every game gets a bit old dog wiffy after a while, no matter how good it is. I like that there is flux in the GW rulesets (though GKs are an exception - fingers should have been boken!).

Skirmish games are good, and Infinity/Malefaux wars for my time along with Necro/InQuis Munda and Rogue Trader/2nd ed. My problem is I have too many rulesets in my head and they are merging AArrgh! Leave GW? No. Care about their business practices? Nope, they aren't forcing you to play their games, its just your addiction...

I do like these forums, but they are getting a little full of whineies who bring a smile to my face when I hear the latest. GW isn't perfect, but I can always get a game and unlike a lot of games I could play 20 years ago I will probably still be able to play in another 20 years.

I took a break from all table top gaming shortly after college when money was tight and childrens were being born. But have recently been getting back into 40K with a few friends that live in the area. Dusted off all my old minis and am currently revamping my marines and orks. Honestly, while the prices are a bit high, it's no more than I expected. I buy a lot of toys for my children, and see them get destroyed in a matter of weeks. I still have Orks and Space Marines from the 2nd edition box set I bought in middle school, and a slew of Gorka Morka orks that I can still technically use. The way I see it is that while prices are going up, the value you can get out of the pieces makes them worth it. Not to mention their resale value stays high as well. I plan to expand my 40k armies first and have been looking to dabble into other games that I can play with my kids as they get older.

I still love the game. For all the complaining and finecast and blah blah blah, its still fun as heck, and the fluff is amazing.

I think we all tend to loose perspective on this from time to time. Its just a game, and a fun one at that. It saddens me that alot of the post on dakka are very negative now.

As is so often said however, I think a lot of people only make negative comments because they have had such a close bond with GW in the past, and don't like to see the company being run poorly.

I think it could be described as an almost an emotional bond, and the slew of negative threads (which have increased by some margin) shows how strongly the customers care about it - last year I think a lot of people felt betrayed, like they were Rocky at the end of the movie when Carl Whethers is hammering the gak out of him; it was just an absolutely relentless one-two-three-four.

Personally speaking, other than misgivings about the price, I was perfectly happy until GW banned international sales from UK sellers. Living in a country that had no GW stores, that essentially killed any prospect of future purchases for me at the time, and in turn I felt alienated. I guess it's easy to not care about stuff happening to other people, but it's a different matter when it happens to you. Reading about big payouts to the managing director, which was on top of them sacking a bunch of store staff and on top of reduced sales, made me finally realise that the company (at the executive level) had stopped being about the hobbyists a long time ago.

Of course I still play and enjoy some of GW's games, but I'm not going to bury my head in the sand or just let my eyes roll up into the back of my head, chanting 'finecast is the best thing ever', 'their prices are reasonable they can charge what they want', when I can see that it is clearly not the case. And in turn, that the cack-handed management is causing potentially massive damage not only to GW's long term prospects, but that of the industry itself.

I haven't bought anything from them since the embargo. I still play and will be having a game tonight playtesting the leaked rules, but I'll echo what others have said. I feel alienated by their practices. The aussie dollar is doing great and instead of keeping things equal I'm paying 2x or more for anything from them. Their practices make me think they don't care, and I won't buy from a company that doesn't care about keeping me as a customer.
I love the world, I love the models, love the game. But at the end of the day I've got so many other options if I just decide to switch why wouldn't I? I have friends who play 40k, and it's fun. But it's doubtful I'll buy much more from them ever again. I might buy the 6th ed rules and my codex when it comes out. Otherwise I'm good. I've been thinking of trying out the competition as I loved Mordheim and skirmish games so the other options sound awesome.

This is a great post and I agree with all the statements written here.

One of the reasons why I dislike GW is because I was a big fan of GW for 10+ years and I personally know the company can do better and has done better in the past. During third, all factions had access to rules, model and errata updates, the AUD prices weren’t too bad ($30AUD for a box of troops), WD had actual content and there weren’t any major QA issues with miscasts.

I had to really struggle to fine enjoyment during 5th and I like to think of Finecast/embargo being the straw that broke the camels back. I’m kind glad I’ve moved on to PP and thanks to the great third party companies (like Anvil Industries, Maxmini and MicroArts Studios) am able to build a cost-effective pre heresy army (using 90% non GW bits).

I was looking back and realized that I haven't bought anything GW(outside of the Necron codex) for almost a year just for the reasons I mentioned. I see a lot of complaints about the same thing and just wondered how many others out there are voting with their wallet.

I am giving up 40k slightly. I'm not an amazing player or a bad player, I play for fun and like to try nutty things, but YEARS between updates to models and races I play, with the possibility of owning dozens of useless models or be very unpleased with an update has turned me off the game. Its not so much the price ( I NEVER EVER EVER buy from GW always a 3rd party, ebay or friends) nor the rules but the codex's and favoritism towards Imperium bordom (space marines mostly). Do we really friggin need 6 space marine codexs? seriously?

I just started hordes and I love it, i like the smaller model count, the variety of units I can field and just easier to find place to play! lol

Do we really need 9 Star Trek movies? 6 Star Wars movies? 5 Hobbit/Lord of the Rings movies? 7 World Series games? 5 Star Trek TV shows? 2 Buffy the Vampire series? 4 Underworld movies? 2723923792 Resident Evil movies? 4 Pirates of the Caribbean movies? Do we need 2 football teams in New York City? 2 in San Fran/Oakland?

You know, with the exception of buffy and angel, I'd probably say no to all of that
