I started a club over a year ago that plays mostly generic 28mm games. We've no use for GW rules or games and have been having alot of fun with games that allow us to stat up and use whatever figures we want.
I stopped buying new GW years ago, and now only buy the occasional vintage RT/2ndEd40k piece that catches my interest. Also, I haven't played 40k in over a year.
I'll keep my two 40k armies. They have uses in the games we play and if the club falls apart or I move, I'll always be able to find a game of 40k. There's really no reason that I can find for me to continue to buy new GW product though.

Almost 20 years for me, and I don't expect I'll ever really stop. As long as they continue to make great models, and my friends continue to play, I'll continue to buy em. In fact even if I never played another game, I'd still buy the models if I like em enough to build and paint. It's an expensive hobby, I've accepted that fact long ago. I buy what I can afford and occasionally what I can't just because I have to have it, but at the end of the day I still enjoy the game and the hobby in general.

Truth be told, the time I stopped playing any form of warhammer regularly was when the gaming room at my local shop closed, leaving us with two tables to game on, and the tiny shop floor to stand on. The gaming room was fantastic, but apparently it wasn't getting GW any money, so they shut it, and that was what really stopped me going. If I could go in, have a game with someone and then go home, it was perfect, but the prospect of me not actually getting a game all day because other people were using the tables has somewhat soured my view.
That said, I have recently started getting into other GW games, specifically those in the specialist games range. Inquisitor is my favourite, as it allows for characterful models without them simply being steamrollered by a tank/nob biker/terminator/horribly OP new unit (DAMN YOU MATT WARD!), and allows an exiting game which focuses on the exploits of the models themselves. Adeptus Titanicus, the precursor to epic 40k, is also great fun, and I have a small necromunda collection. I do have a couple of super-heavy tanks, but they rarely get a trip off the shelf, as getting them into the LWGS without damaging them is quite a trick. I also plan to collect a small (as always, it's "just one or two to get me going") BFG fleet in the future.
I would recommend having a look at the specialist games range, and at the other gaming ranges out there, to see what captures your imagination. As we're on DakkaDakka, Gorkamorka seems especially suitable.

Because of the community I play in. The WM/H players are absolutely the worst kind of WM/H snobs. Generally colors my view of the community quite nicely, and makes me want less and less of it.
Sucks that your Warmahordes community isn't that fun to play with. I am going strong on 40k and Warmachine, which I started in October as less people play 40k where I game. I don't see myself as ditching GW soon as I enjoy 40k and the models are cool and what I have will work in 2-3000 point games allowing for point changes in updates.
The really weird thing about these comments that some people keep posting over and over (and are basically the same few people), is that you just have to read a couple of BRs from big WHFB / 40K tournaments to see this type of attitude, but I have yet to see or read a single report about these supposed WAAC players that cheat constantly to win and are bad sports in any Warmahordes tournament BR...
Also its a bit strange that the game system for "people who just wan't to have fun" has to have stuff like "composition" to try (and fail) to ensure that the games are actually fun...
And to keep OT, I haven't bought anything but paints from GW for over 2 years now.

My spending has slowed greatly, but that's because I own all I care to own at this time. I still buy every new codex and odds and ends, but it's more a lack of time being able to hobby that keeps my spending curbed. If I could find the time I guarantee I'd have every army there is to have and then some.

I stopped buying from GW on principle more than a year ago, but I've also started playing GW games with far less frequency. This has nothing to do with my boycott though.
For me, the issue has been time and size, which are interrelated. GW games take a long time to play (the caveat being that most people in my area play 2000/2500 point games 40K/WHFB respectively). They also require a lot of models. Since having a baby, I've seen my hobby time restricted (both in terms of play time and paint time). When I have time to assemble and paint, it isn't much, and when I play on the one night per week that I have available, I like to get in more than one or two games.
Thus, GW games simply require too much preparation time and too much time to play. When I have an hour or two to paint, I really don't want to spend it painting the same model over and over. I tried that, but my interest quickly dropped off.
What I've gravitated to instead has been skirmish games. I run a Mordheim campaign (which is "GW" I suppose), and I play things like Heavy Gear Blitz, Freebooter's Fate, Malifaux, etc. I enjoy the fact that I can spend more time on the models, and also get the satisfaction of finishing a project. I enjoy that the games tend to be brisk, so I can get in several in an evening, and even play different systems in one night.

That's the thing, I see no reason at all to play one system exclusively. Sometimes wargaming forums start to remind me of the old 16-bit game console wars, where people would bitterly fight for their own console's corner, while ridiculing anything on the other system (even though you secretly wished to play on those other games!)
I don't currently play GW stuff, although I have armies for 40k and WFB if the mood takes me (and no doubt 40k this year, if the rules turn out to be anything like the leaked set, they certainly seem a lot of fun!) And if I don't like a model for something, or resent the price, there is nothing to stop me subbing in some Mantic minis.
But at the same time there are times when I've watched a war movie or read a book and want to play FoW, or watched Blade Runner or Akira and then there is Infinity. I guess Malifaux after watching David Bowie in Labyrinth?
There is a whole wealth of games out there these days, certainly as gamers the choice has never been so good. That so many of these are skirmish systems means that the price is quite reasonable.

I stopped the GW games aeons ago. I usually find good rulesets online and use them, and that way I can use minis of any company i want...
GW's profit-model made me start disliking their games years ago, and the fact that the few tournaments I did were screwed over by what we called rules-lawyers just pushed me further. Nowadays we just play what we like when we like, and for tournaments I just have the complete 2nd armoured division (10K points) (flames of war late war operation Cobra)

At one point I was all set to make a dreadnought spam army as an artful side project to playing tyranids but after pricing it I just couldn't do it.
I spent it on warmachine/hordes instead, now I'm looking to off-load my tyranids.

+1 to this. GW games have always been the "other game" I play (it's like Macca's, it's always there and always the same) but I've always had at least one other game on the boil in addition - whether it was Battletech, Void, Warzone, Stargrunt, Tomorrow's War, whatever. Limiting your gaming to one company's product seems so straitjacketing.

Games Workshop's example of Greed over the common good really inspired me. So much that I decided to ask for a pay cut instead of a raise these year. If I condemn GW for trying to make money, how can I justify a high salary?
I ask that everyone tired of corporate greed follow my example and ask HR to give them a 30% pay reduction, or even better, mandatory contribution to a community organization. Acorn is gone, but I am sure you can find a substitute at moveon.org.

Yes, GW is over priced. But, there is still a place for them in the market.
There are online retailers that will beat them every time on price.
GW's apeal comes from the availability of everything, if you want to go along and buy a model or paints then usually you can (in a lot of cases). Plus in store you can get advise, look at models in the flesh and speak to other like minded people, no other company has this many outlets on hand.
As for pricing, i do think that they need to address the idea of price to points ratio, I dont do any gaming but find as much plastic and work going into some of the cheaper models than into to the more expensive ones from a design and manufacturing point of view.
I don't complain too much as I still buy from GW stores, but more expensive items I will save more money and buy online from smaller retailers.

I'd be happy to work for free, if other people would let me live for free. Wouldn't that be something? In fact I'd probably contribute a lot more to humanity if I didn't have all the bother of things like money and rent keeping me down.

Limited funds forced to me to look at finding cheaper alternatives to GW a while back, only GW products I buy one is either glue or paints from a LGS a street over from my local GW store which has a nice 25% discount on GW products.
Whilst I've found the Brits from Westwind's Secrets of the Third Reich game are what I'm actually looking far and cheaper than GW's plastic (even though they're metal), my IG army is on hold until 6th Ed hits.

Still have my Ig to tinker around with for 40k. I still play the odd game, nothing heavy at all. I am still interested in what GW put out but I dont go out buy every rule book and new model like I used to in my youth.
I have always played with other minis and rulseets though. I'm not missing anything.
Painting and modelling are taking my time at the moment.

When i get some spare money i buy some kit, full price from my FLGS. I show my support by never accepting sale prices and im on a college students budget.... still i enjoy the game, i enjoy the minis, and i enjoy painting and modeling. Instead of complaining about prices...etc just relax and enjoy it for what it is...a game. it took me the course of over a year to collect each of my armies and i had fun assembling and painting each kit along the way. The price tag IMHO justified the few weeks i spent working on each one and then the years on end i continue to play the game with them. Besides their are soooo many other model companies making models out there GW price isnt even a problem these days. I do think we will see them begin to do price drops if they deem these companies an actual market threat.....

I just buy alot less than I used to. I used to spend about $1000 a year on GW. As they've upped their price and changed their rules for transparent reasons... I purchased less. I still play 40k, I just sculpt and cast my own pieces. Last year I spent less than $100 on GW, but about $400 on the other parts of this hobby. This year my purchasing is already higher than last, but that because I bought some FW chaos dwarfs.

For me, the divorce is about to be finalized soon. We've been broken up for a couple years now and the last time GW and I talked was the start of 8th edition. Irreconcilable differences have ensued.
I've been sorting out my remaining stuff and it will be going up for sale as soon as I get it organized and listed. Over 8k of Dwarfs, 2500ish of Dual Wing, 8-9k of Space Marines, and 5-6k of Orks all will be going for what someone will offer me...

The prices and low quality rules are the main reasons why I quit. The secondary reasons were embargo, finecast and bad release decisions. The clincher was when I started investigated PP products and discovered how green the grass on the other side really was. It’s kind of a shame IMO as during third edition everything was the opposite. The prices weren’t too bad ($10-15AUD for a blister and $30AUD for a box of troops), all factions got rules and models updates and White Dwarf had actual content. If GW still handled themselves like they did during third, I would still be buying their products.

I am giving up 40k slightly. I'm not an amazing player or a bad player, I play for fun and like to try nutty things, but YEARS between updates to models and races I play, with the possibility of owning dozens of useless models or be very unpleased with an update has turned me off the game. Its not so much the price ( I NEVER EVER EVER buy from GW always a 3rd party, ebay or friends) nor the rules but the codex's and favoritism towards Imperium bordom (space marines mostly). Do we really friggin need 6 space marine codexs? seriously?
I just started hordes and I love it, i like the smaller model count, the variety of units I can field and just easier to find place to play! lol

Do we really friggin need 6 space marine codexs? seriously?
I just started hordes and I love it, i like the smaller model count, the variety of units I can field and just easier to find place to play! lol
Do we really need 9 Star Trek movies? 6 Star Wars movies? 5 Hobbit/Lord of the Rings movies? 7 World Series games? 5 Star Trek TV shows? 2 Buffy the Vampire series? 4 Underworld movies? 2723923792 Resident Evil movies? 4 Pirates of the Caribbean movies? Do we need 2 football teams in New York City? 2 in San Fran/Oakland?

.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase. |
