Hi folks!

Long time no type. Punk Moth project is still alive and kicking, trust me! There's been some setbacks on the way, but other than that, almost everything else has been going like planned. Almost.

I thought that I finished my mob when I had Inquisitor Cassar painted. Well, it looks like I was wrong. Some time ago I found myself sifting through the last month's White Dwarf and paused for a good moment when John Blanche's always wonderful Blanchitsu popped in to my sight. In his article John introduced some of the finest conversion made out of Games Workshop's infamous chubby Nurgle Chaos Champion.

You know what? I simply couldn't resist the temptation of making one of my own to fill the ranks of Inquisitor Cassar's entourage. So I took my pencils and started sketching the next character for the Punk Moth scenario...


Hagard & The Færwyrd

Hagard is yet another henchman for Inquisitor Cassar's retinue. Hagard fought his brutal wars on the same savage planet that Mutie Kul did his biddings. Hagard's grotesque and cruel heavy machinegun Færwyrd (inspired by MG-42) sows terror amongst his foes, ripping them to pieces with high caliber rounds and fast fire rate. Hagard wields the gun with an agile, lightly moving pneumatic arm that is much longer and stronger than a normal limb. The arm is integrated to the gun's barrel and it is like the gun and the arm are one piece.

This side quest disturbed my Caterpillar plans a bit. If you remember, the Caterpillar was the phase where we are supposed to be doing terrain for the Spiky Rat Pack's first INQ28 game. The terrain is well on its way, but there still hell-of-a-lot to do before we can even dream of playing a game on that board!

The sketch looks fantastic (as always... ) - I can see the Nurgle Lord, but I love the disparate proportions on his body. I'm excited to see how you craft it - every single one of the models you've made has been a great transition from artwork to actual model.

Also looking forward to the terrain. Are you going to have any Necro-inspired multi-tier buildings? I suppose it depends on your scenarios, but I'm liking the preview so far.

Remi, the terrain will be more like playable diorama with an interesting layout and a natural feel rather than "mindless" labyrinth of miscellaneus walls and objects. It has prooved to be quite challenging to make the terrain manouverable when approaching the design process this way though. I decided to split the board in half so that I could design the interior of the Basilica to represent more like real building. This way we'll be able to do photoshooting of the game from closer range and lower angle if/when the characters are moving inside the building's ruins.

Long story short(er), Necro-style multilevel terrain will be presented in very limited way, some catwalks and ruined roof-tops hear and there...

stunning work .. so excited to see both terrain and mini completed..

Back to business... I started modelling Hagard. Here's the outcome so far...





I still need to add bits here and there, and when I'm done with that, it's time for some greenstuffin'. Hagard will get hair on his head (but he'll be bald like in the drawing) and his shoulder guard will get more detailed and less like "out of the box" feel for it. I'm thinking of adding more layers and edge to it.

And then there's the pneumatic arm. It still needs some heavy modding before I'm satisfied by the looks of it. At the moment it stands out like a straight junk with pipes and cables, so I need to add some functional looking bits to it so that it would look more like it could actually be a working piece. Also, the connection between the arm and the gun is still pretty nonexistent and needs to be stressed.

Love your work, izeColt. I think it's more impressive to see your concept art before, and then the execution of the model.

What will you do with all the chaosy bits? I see the hanging guts are gone (good choice), but he still has a gaping belly, hooved feet, mark of nurgle, and such.

ize very nice dude. I was wondering how you would manage to get this together. I really like the slenderness of the weapon compaired to the bulk. Bionic arm doesn't look too bad at all from the angles here. Looking forward to the gs stage.

OK I have to ask do you design your artwork around what is readily available pleas say yes, as I really will start to believe that the devil owns your sole

Belly will be hidden and smoothed with gs, hoofed feet will stay to give some edge to the legs and mark of Nurgle might be covered by a loin clothe as seen in the drawing. I've just cut some mass out of the chubby's body so far, so much more modding will still be done.

Please Yodhrin, do so! It's an honour to share inspiration and give that small boost to the fellow hobbyists to do their best. I don't know how'd I manage to do what I do if I hadn't leeched inspiration from the works of others...

In Hagard's case it was the first time I had a certain part in my mind that I wanted to use in my project; Nurgle Chaos Lord's body. In most cases I just draw and paint what comes in to my mind and when I'm done with it, I start to figure out what bits would work in which part. Of course I've done compromises here and there and the main focus has been in trying to keep the spirit of the miniature as close to the sketch as possible.

That makes sense however it still seems perfectly on track for the original design, watching your work evolve is really quite inspiring to say the least.

You mentioned you can not sell your talent but maybe your minis I have to ask any chance of selling me the way you did the judge wig haircut for Inquisitor Cassar

I would like a few of my characters with this hair style, so if you could give me a run through I would be very grateful, I also gather the collar was done in a similar way

Sure thing. Just roll a piece of greenstuff to thin bar and let it harden. When it is hard, cut it to small barrels and glue them on the head in set of three to four. Finally make the top of the hair from gs and done. Small ponytail on the back will top off the wig effect.

When doing the collar, I followed the instructions found from Jakob Rune Nielsen's Duchess Death documentation...

The head did give something to ponder, but I guess that the Chaos Marauder Horseman's head does the trick. I did cut some of his cheeks away to give a bit more slender look to it...

On with the work in process...

The fat bloke is well on his way to the painting stage. I'm almost done with the greenstuffing and just making some finishing touches before basing and priming...





There are couple of more shots from different angles in our blog Spiky Rat Pack, if you happen to be interested...

As you can see, I decided to add more layers to the shoulder guard to make it resemble a bit more like one shown in the drawing. Also, Hagard got some hair on the back of his head, which I tried to align so that it would look like the wind is moving it a bit...

A couple of purity seals on the shoulder guard give a feel of movement on the otherwise pretty stiff looking model.

Great stuff as usual. Can't wait to see him painted up!

Great job the hair was a nice touch added a little more which was needed, although I have to say the rifle end looks a little wonky

LDD, yeah, the end of the rifle is a bit wonky, but I think I can live with it Maybe if I added a small shoulder trim to kill the recoil it would look a bit more manly, don't you think?
