I was really thinking of his writing, Gormenghast (one of my favourite books) is full of oddball characters: the grotesque, the gothic, the bizarre and the macabre.

Job is looking good so far, I really, really like the hair and nose. Something about the hair on your figures moves the models from being standard Warhammer figures to being something else entirely.

Cheers for the Gormenghast shoutout! That book is so awesome!

Bruticus is right, though: izeColt, you should really take a look at Gormenghast if you haven't already. Chances are you'll love it to bits, considering your art and fluff! There's a pretty good film adaptation as well.

So it looks like that the next book I'll be looking for in the library is Gormenghast then. Thanks for the hint guys.

I'll upload some WIP shots of Job tomorrow. Made some greenstuffing this evening and am pretty close to start painting...

Finally some WIP shots!

The progress of Old Man is looking good so far. I've already started painting him. The painting is running pretty well so far, almost finished with the model to be honest! I've used some neat techniques to bring his cape to life (cheers to JRN for his helpful tips!) and his face looks meaner than I thought it was possible for me to paint... Stay tuned

It's a cool model overall but the head in particular is just awesome. His imperfections and odd features make it look so different from a usual GW sculpt.

Damn another person using the cairn wraith. By the time I get round to mine I'll have no option but to copy..shudder.

Very nice old man Izecolt. I like the way he is almost stroking the servo skull.

Haha! I believe there's still plenty of room for another Cairn Wraith conversion and I'm sure yours will stand proud next to others.

Hooyah! Got a nice painting spree and finished Old Man in record time. Here's some shots of him...

Some more angles and background jabadaba can be found at Spiky Rat Pack, if you happen to be interested...

For Old Man's cape I used sponge techinque JRN told about in his blog Miniatextures. This technique is also famous for those who like to make weathering effects for armours and other metals. Sponge's randomness makes it perfect tool to make imperfect texture for different surfaces. In this case I was looking for certain effect for the cloth, something that would look like maggot and moth eaten sack with oil stains and dirt. Hope I made it there.

Best one so far in my opinion. Did you start with zenithal highlights from an airbrush like JRN? Your style looks like it uses more washes - I love the naturalistic, grimy look, I hope to be able to replicate that style one day.

Incredible! Mind-boggling the amount of thought and background that goes into each of these characters. The Old Man looks fantastic - so impressed with the detail you managed to get into his facial expression.

Sorry Bruticus, (almost) missed your question there! I don't have an airbrush, so zenithal highlighting/shading is out of question in my case. Yes, I do use lots of washes and inks to make glazes. If you're interested in learning more about grimy and naturalistic (=ugly) technique, may I recommend you to check out Steve Buddle's blog Spyglass Asylum. His blog is updated very seldom these days after he went to work for GW, but you can still browse to his ponderings regarding Dirty Painting and several washing techniques, which you might find both inspiring and insteresting to learn more about...

Hi Malika2! We're currently planning our first game of INQ28 to be played this Fall, at the earliest. Punk Moth is pretty long term project due the fact that we'll be doing all the stuff - minis, terrain, scenario etc. - from the scratch.

The game will be played using Inquisitor rules which are adapted to work in 28mm scale, hence the abbreviation INQ28(mm). We both will be having teams that include four key members + extras (Cyber Mastifs, Servo Skulls etc.). It will be very narrative game for us, being more like roleplaying each character than aiming to win the game. We will be creating a story that is lead forward mainly by character chemistry rather than tactics and random factors.

Wonderful group shot Ize, so very full of menace and the macabre.. I agree that you should check out Ghormenghast , I think remember reading in ratspike years ago that Ian Miller had also been inspired by Mr Peake could be wrong though ..

I found an artist who;s work reminds me of Ian millers the other day and thought you would like his work also

Albin Brunovsky , Put a collection of his work in my inspiration gimme bar on opus

https://gimmebar.com/view/4fbbac9aaac422c853000002/big

great to see beneath the old mans dirty cloak , ... that just sounds wrong ;-)

Cheers Neil! Ghormenghast has been added to my "must read" list, with very high priority (there's plenty of books in that list, slow reader you see). Thank you for another recommendation.

That Albin Brunovsky's stuff is mad! Nice find indeed. For some reason I got vibes not only from Ian Miller's work, but also from Roger Dean's. Don't know where that came from since Dean's style is very, very different from Brunovsky's, but I feel that there is some deeper connection between them... Loneliness? Anguish? Reaching the extreme limits for something beyond..?

Thank god Old Man's lower part is only a floating anti-gravity chasis ;D

Man that is so cool. I love the colours on the old man cloak. He really looks so so good . And the beneath the robes drawing is just wrong but very cool.

I may have missed it if you've mentioned it but what are your plans for the gaming board. Industrial, city, shanty etc?

Really looking forward to seeing the whole process from start to gaming. Oh and seeing your detailed battle reports

The group shot is getting me going for your Inquisitor.

We're aiming to build our gaming board to resemble Imperial gothic industrial district that has seen some serious fighting at some point. There will be ruins and pits everywhere, deep behind frontlines. Everything will be covered by dust and sand, rust and corrosion has eaten most of the metals.

Operation Punk Moth keeps thickening. Mikko just finished skulpting yet another masterpiece for his retinue, the Twinz. I, in the other hand, haven't finished anything really new lately, though I made a drawing about Skullhopperre...

Inquisitorial Archives: Study of Skullhopperre II

+ Skullhopperre +

Those of you who are wondering what the hell is this, please let me introduce to you, Skullhopperre (Bragenpanne Den Ongewinne) - or graedig basterd like Mutie Kul would call it. Skullhopperre is Mutie Kul's Cybermastif, pet, blood hound, which Kul uses for tracking enemies and draw their fire at.

Skullhopperre was born in the middle of kitbashing frenziness, on the spur of the moment. I didn't plan to do it, it just came to life. I had some Tyranid bits lying around and thought "I really need to either use these for something or else throw them away". So I took a knife, cut this little critter's 'ead off and put a human skull in its place - vóila!

Once again, a fantastic piece. You might want to consider building a time machine and heading back to the time when GW was established. They'd probably hire you on the spot.

Come to think about it, they might even hire you now...

Anyway, very full of character and very creepy! Still looking forward to your Inquisitor. Like, A LOT

Thank you for your encouragement, KrautScientist. Inquisitor is waiting for some bits to arrive from England. After that it is time for some serious bashing.

I'm still not sure what head I will start to work with in Cassar's case, bought like a dozen different face that I will need to choose from. I guess I'll have to work it out somehow...

What comes to his body, well, there's couple of options. I'll post more about this in my next update...

I can hardly wait, izeColt! If I could name three things that you absolutely need to bring over from the drawing, it would be these:

- the hair
- the collar
- the slender silhouette. I love how thin he is in the drawing - almost freakishly so. But he looks lean and dangerous, like a wasp

Oh, and one last thing: It'll probably nearly impossible to pull that off, but try to capture that look in his eyes in the model! He really looks like someone who has seen too much and gone too far...

Phew, I guess you can tell i'm really looking forward to this one, huh?

Right, I got my bits for the Inquisitor Cassar from the UK last week, just in time before weekend. I managed to start building Cassar's body with pretty nice pace, here's the result so far...

Inquisitor Marius Cassar

I'm not sure if I'll arm his left hand with a sword or a gun. What do you think?

KrautScientist wrote:If I could name three things that you absolutely need to bring over from the drawing, it would be these:

Two out of three ain't bad, don't you think? I decided to give Cassar a chest plate so he'd be more protected when on the field. That's one the reasons I had to abandon his slender silhouette along with the fact that his leather coat became a bit thicker than I thought it'd be. Also, his shoulder mounted bolt pistol has quite a mechanic build on his back so he had to be a bit more fit to be able to carry the thing around. These kind of things just pop out when you start to kit-bashing, you know...

And here's a sneak peak from another side project that will be done for our Punk Moth project... NPC grunts!
