an easy, cheap and fairly durable material to fill em with is "great stuff" expanding Urethane foam. Specifically the yellow kind they carry it at home Depot. and probaly at your local hardware store if there is one up by ya.

My wife heard me complaining about the cups so she bought cookies for her office yesterday and gave me the tray. She's pretty awesome like that.
I didn't like the tray much either but I glued it to a base for some stability and sprayed it flat black and another color after that. Seeing the natural shading and the actual shape / design has given me a lot of ideas above and beyond this contest. I want to do a plaster cast and build it up from there w/ bitz and detail, then send it to Galorn to see if he can cast it. I'm thinking something like this:

i see the star wars influence there too... tho i like skalks referrence pics too... and i think filling it with plaster is a good idea scarper... tho i admit... galorns idea to use expanding foam is a good one too...
as for the grimm fairy tales... everyone was german in these^^... tho germany was back then way bigger.... so you got lots of different folks back then too...

uh oh.... I should really start working more on this now...
anyway, this is how far I am atm... filled it with plaster, and you can take the cast out of the box.... so I could create a whole city of these lol!
mrmerlin... have you used a wooden rod inside or something to hold the blobs of plaster better together? i bet that would be helpful... but it looks really cool...
vik... no need for a stick. the cast will be safely inside the tray later, as I'll have to use the actual container for the comp, not te cast... it just gives it stability. But I thought it looked cool enough to post
I'm feeling the press of time upon me. This weekend is out of the question for modeling, I might have a couple days next week, and then I'm going to be gone for 9 days. The last few days of the contest I may or may not have time. Ugh.
I'll enter my best effort, but don't expect anything brilliant.

@Mr Merlin - A cookie factory from cookie containers? Meta! Sounds like fun though - Should be able to get loads of character from the grots. I'm impressed your packaging is sturdy enough to pop out that cast!
@Skalk - I'd love to see it whatever stage it's at - your last entry was jaw-dropping. Totally feel you on the time issue though - it's one hell of a lot harder to throw yourself into something if you're not sure you'll have the time to follow through. Hope the new container works for you though!

And a considerably less well defended entrance (I ran the box card through a card crimper a few times, so it should have some good texture when it comes to painting!)
