If you want the face to pop, 1) paint it relatively light so it contrasts with the armour around it. I'd stay away from reddish flesh with all the blue around it, but a pale, elf-like complexion (rhinox hide highlighted to elf flesh with a flesh wash) seems like it would do the trick. and 2) add some additional highlights to the armour around the face to draw the eye in.

My eye keeps being drawn away from his face to the robes as they are coming across as dark flesh colour in the photos. Maybe something slightly darker for the robes and as has been mentioned, adding some highlighting around the face area to draw the eyes in. Currently your robes are the standout part and immediately catch the eye.

Viterbi wrote:Always nice to finish a unit and captain is coming along great, very nice shield. Regarding the face, I always work inside out in such cases. So I would do the skin, try to do eyes (although in the end may just do some dark wash) and then veeeeeery carefully do the parts around the skin.
Thanks Viterbi, pretty sure I have never tried doing it that way before. Maybe next time.

gobert wrote:Looking good so far. As for the Face I’d probably get in there early, which isn’t much help right now! . As it’s quite recessed you might be able to get away with a quick base and a wash to show him in the shadow almost, maybe a bit of Agrax if you want to accentuate the shade. Then touch up with the base colour again? Better advice would be to not listen to me as I struggle with skin tones too, so I’ll be trying the contrast skin tones on my next lot!
Good to hear I am not the only one who struggles with skin tones, the guilleman contrast paint has certainly helped me. Thanks for the input.

Thank you Gitz.
youwashock wrote:For such a small, enclosed area, Contrast might not be a bad idea. Get some light base coat in there, follow up with a dash of Gulliman's. Little dark wash around the eye sockets. Ready for action.

Thanks Youwashock and CK trying out some contrast on his face and I did highlight the armor around his face. You will have to let me know what you think.

Thanks Endtransmission it really did draw my eye to the orange too, maybe that is why I was having such a hard time with the face. So I added some more detail around the face, as I asked Youwashock an Ck does it look better now?

I find my eye drawn in quite naturally, so it seems to be working out nicely! If you want to add even more to the effect, paint the lighter part of the tilting plate in a diagonal towards the face - though I don't think it's necessary, just pointing out options.

Thanks so much for the input guys very helpful! I believe this is the finished product. Not real happy with some of the freehand but it’s always a learning experience for every model.

Again thanks for looking!

Great work on the finished captain, love all the detail on his mini shield and the big one The different color on the rebreather really helps and I may steal that idea once I've decided which head my captain will get once I built him

Ok guys I guess the freehand turned out better than I thought. Thank you all for the kind words and CC on the helm and face.
So next up and possibly last model of the year is a Killa Kan for the monthly painting challenge. It has been staring at me for about 9 days before sitting and forcing myself to put some paint to the plastic. Here’s how it’s turned out so far.

Love your blues on the Captain, a real striking scheme!

And I agree with Viterbi - the different coloured panels break up the scheme nicely on the Kan. Keep it up

Thanks Viterbi, I think that the metals is what worried me the most.

Thenk you WarbossDakka the Captain is such a great model from the Indomitus set I really wanted to do a nice job oh him.

He is pretty; close to being done my thoughts is that maybe the saw needs a bit more work. Maybe some more brass on the claw mechanism to break up the silver.

Looking good Yorkright, I think the Rokkits look a bit clean though? As for the base it looks like it needs a dead Space Marine, probably an Ultramarine

I'm thinking something more saturated would help on that base to make it feel less plain, since the colours are quite muted at the moment. Nothing a bit of grass tufts won't solve

A good idea but with the grandson around he may ask why is there a dead Ultramarine on the base.
