I'm still not sure if I should do the lava I did before, but I think I'm kinda gonna have to. Pain in the arse but that's the way of things. I've been swapping back and forth but my hands are about 1/3 of the way to being shot again. Good times. lol

This is the first time I've looked at this thread in weeks, and it's too bad because I think you've made a fundamental flaw with your paint scheme but it obviously isn't anything you'll be able to change at this point sadly.

But the issue is this:

If the paint scheme is trying to represent an extreme lighting situation of the models basking in the glow of lava, the crevices of the model should be black, not bright yellow as the glow of lava would create a whole bunch of deep shadows all over the person standing near it.

In hindsight, I think you should have basecoated in black, and then your first heavy coat or drybrush should have been the yellow and then work your way up as you have to this point.

As it stands now, the models just look a little strange because the crevices of the model are all light-colored when everything the human eye knows about such a situation tells us the crevices should be dark in this circumstance.

But anyway, good luck with this!

That was the original idea, but I shelved it in favor of a different approach. I think that was somewhere in the middle of the thread.

Instead I decided that they aren't basking in the glow of lava, they are arising from it. I had to modify the paint scheme to accommodate that change from outer glow to inner glow.

Hope that makes sense.

With the last drybrush of black on.

Now which base?

I'm leaning towards the white one. I like how it looks better.

Thoughts?

I'm not too crazy about either one. To go along with what you are trying to achive, I'd like to see a light orange dry brush followed with a red. But very sparingly and just on the edges of the base.

I've been sorta following this and just can not make any sense of it.

You are making a Sisters/IG/Grey Hunters army and trying to get the "arising from the fires" effect. Correct?

How from your fluff point of view is this possible. I mean sure you can do what you want, but realistically how can this be done? Mortals coming out of fire.....

On the one hand I def. see Old Man's point, in that the the Emperor would have to be showing mucho love to all these individuals to preserve them through all that heat. However, I have never been much of a fluff hobbyist (really didn't want to use bunny, or nazi; what else is there????). I think that this paint scheme is looking much better than some of the previous efforts, and seeing all the models tied together like that is always a plus.

I don't think I would have gone to such a deep, rich red up top there like you did. However, to be honest I think the fact that you did made it look better than what I might have ended up with. I did something similar to this with some sallies for my lizards. Started with a medium gray base coat and just started drybrushing up up and away. Came out ok. I might go back now and throw some richer red in there after seeing this scheme.

It's to weird for me. I kinda like the Idea if different colors . But it is all painted so good job.

And this cant happen they'd burn up in the for reals world

Personally like the 2nd one.

1st looks like mustard was put on base. 2nd looks like lava.
I like how 41st mill. breaks all Laws in the Reals world.

Dont get me wrong bet it was hard i'm just not a fan.

Thought you where doing Pure GK ?

I usually do cool blues on my models. So I've been experimenting alot the past couple years, staying away from that.

My Eldar are very different from the norm. Some like, some don't. I want this to be different from the norm of blue sisters, silver grey knights, and camo guard. Call me crazy.

Why are they on fire? They are fighting on a death world.

How can they be on fire? The Emperor Protects.

It's easier when you see the whole army. If I wanted a golden demon entry for each model, I'd probably have done any of a dozen other lava effects. Stippling, stenciling, I mean the possibilities are endless really.

All look very nice. They also don't look as awesome once you aren't looking at them from 3" away. Across the tabletop is the look I'm going for. Looks good? Pass!

So I figured out what I'm going to do to finish up.

White on the bases and non-cork areas. Then a darker yellow on the booties, to separate out from the lighter yellow on the cork areas. I haven't done the darker yellow yet, I'll touch it up later.

How things would look (more or less) with a light source underneath...like a lava lake deep inside the death world.

Now you've actually posted a better focused close up, I really like the idea. Not sure the pure white bases do it for me though, might need something on a colour variation on them...

I just want to say that Imperial Guard, Grey Knights, and Sisters emerging from Lava is awesome. In fact it's *insert profanity of your choice*-ing awesome.

The Emperor protects indeed!

I think a darker yellow will help a lot on the feet of the models.

Will you be doing anything else to the cork though? Right now it looks like they're standing on cheese to me, and i'm not sold on that color of yellow. Are they supposed to be standing on rocks (the cork) that is floating in the lava? I thought one of the pics you posted show the guard appearing to emerge from the cork (feet were hidden?) like the cork WAS the lava?

Why white bases? It doesn't seem to fit the lava theme to me (is it white hot...?) I would go with black or maybe like I dunno some other lava color.

Anyway, cool army and I'm really envisioning this truly hellish lava death world. Sounds like these boys need to fight some daemons!

Will you be making some lava terrain too?

Edit: Are you using GW paints? Was your middle band of red with Blood Red (or equivalent?) also what did you use for the dark red?

You have inspired me to make my own lava model, albeit just one. I'm going to make a lava ork boy Thanks for the inspiration.
