Glad to see that youre still workin on this.
About those Heavy Bolter guys .... are those attached to the shoulder or are they carrying in on the shoulder? Seems a bit gun servitor like atm and to be honest a bit lopsided. Id expect them to tip over any second (irl, obviously im not talking about the miniature itself).

The theme works well, I really dig the helmets.

I always love the way the Pig Iron heads look on Cadians. So much better than the Cadian heads.

What are the converted flamers going to be used as in the Retinue - meltas? I'm liking the conversion a lot. Frankly, if you threw a belt of ammo hanging down from them, they'd make good heavy stubbers (not that you can take that as an option). Great simple conversion.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

The faith of the emperor holds them up!

I have a post-painting addition I might do to them to make this happen.

No idea if I will actually do it or not though.

They will indeed be meltas.

So it's nothing much really, but as I do each step I'll put it here and update.

So it seems I've drybrushed too much over the yellow. Good one, dummy!

However I'm going to see it through, this is what test models are for.

This is a drybrush of Crimson followed by Engine Red.

What, don't like my cutesy paint names?

Well this is the effect I was kinda shooting for, but I think I need to make more distinct bands but I need feedback.

Should I make the whole model look like the lava?

Comments, critique, suggestions please.

I think I should do the gun separately on the next model I test on, and just do it normally...maybe put a heat bloom on it after the mithril silver is on.

That's tomorrow I hope.

The helmets on the IG look great, I have an IG army myself with those same heads. On the SoB it looks alright, though I don't think it quite fits. I suggest you make your servitor HB guardsmen look more servitor-y, it looks like they are just holding the HB over their shoulder in an awkward position and are otherwise normal guardsmen. I would try to go for more contrast on the lava bases. The terminators so far look good, but I don't know what you're trying to do on the SoB's. The lava is too yellow and I don't like the "lava armor"

The SOB looks like a blob of orange at the moment.

Have you though of doing yellow 'blacklining' red edges and black for the centre of the armour plates ala cooling/crusted lava?

Would definitely take much longer to paint. but from the pics you have posted of the SOB you cannot make out any detail.

You'll have to forgive me for being slow, but is it that the army will be a "Lava Contstruct" army? Or is it that they're wearing "Lava Camo"? I'm not sure of the direction you're going with this.

Hmmm, the gun servitor "official" model has a guy with a HB sticking out of one arm socket, and has 2 little wires on his chest.

Otherwise, they are the same (sans the head swap).

Since I don't like the official model in the least, this is the compromise.

Indeed.

I did think about it, I think I drybrushed too much and the original effect didn't come out correctly.

Well I don't know how you define much longer but I will have a go at another model and see if I can get it the way I want it.

I don't think the technique is difficult, just getting it done right is.

No, they're supposed to be coming up out of the lava.

Thus, the blown effect when I drybrushed too much.

If you are going for an "emerging" or rising from the fire, so to speak. perhaps you should have them "cooler" at the top and hotter at the bottom. So, just as the lava is cooling and turning dark as it cools, you would have the upper portions darkening and the lower portions brighter..

Whats the reason they'd be coming out the lava? If they are meant to be the "Sisters of Lava" why not make the armour and boltgun hardened black/brown lava and the soft armour and cloak etc the fiery yellow/red armour.

Or if they are emerging "cool" the top and also the extremities of the model elbows, boltgun, backpack etc. I know you may be sick of using glue again but why not model drips of lava coming off the model, and have them darker as they cool at the bottom of the drop, if you catch my drift.

Good look with the army and the paint scheme, I'm sure they will be excellent once perfected.

I think I might just have to go and get some PI heads now

Mmmmm. PI heads...

Apple PI heads taste good a-la-mode.

OT, though... Not a fan of it. Stelek.

I suggest exercising your Google-Fu and finding some lava images.

As has been said, make them cooler on the top and hotter on bottom.
I suggest NO yellow on the model at all. Only the base.
They're standing out of it enough that the yellow lava would be on the base or internally only.
DARK grey/Black near the top.

This one, though, is a "rinse and repeat."

Keep up the hard work.

I was browsing some CMON tutorials the other day and ran across this: http://www.coolminiornot.com/article/aid/302

There's a couple other lava tutorials there, but I thought that one was the best and seemed to fit the type of terrain you're going for the best. Hope it might help.

Here's another thought on the models themselves - what about doing them similar to the old descriptions of the Eldar Avatar - their armor, weapons, equipment, would be blackened and cracking, but hot lava would be visible in the seams and cracks.

@ Mohaniker: Well they aren't really coming out of it, they're just fighting on a Death World....that's a lava world basically. I'm thinking like a heavy mining planet, aka the world at the end of Revenge of the Sith.

@ MM: Not a fan of the heads, or the lava, or both? I don't mind the suggestion though, I will see if I can give it a whirl.

@ Death by Monkeys: It is an excellent tutorial, and I based some efforts off of it. The problem is, it doesn't mesh well with figs.

The bit about the Avatar is indeed the look I'm going for. I just need to perfect it.

Well... Both, actually. I'm one of those who is NOT a Pig Iron fan.
In that instance, though, I was referring to the paint scheme. I'm in the "looks like an orange blob" group (though that is a bit more blunt than I'd say it LOL). It's the highlighting, I think. IMO, You were too heavy on the highlights to begin with, and there isn't enough drastic difference between the colors, which hides your changes from one color to the next. Lastly, the way you painted them... as if the hottest part was inside of them, rather than the ground they're emerging from... made them just look "off." I think highlighting from the bottom upwards will give you a better feel of what you're trying to accomplish with their fluff.

The official model is a cyborg servitor with heavy bionics, a different suit, etc. Your "servitors" are guardsmen with heavy bolters instead of arms. So, no they are not really the same.
