Elmers glue is PVA/Wood glue isn't it?

Waiting desperately to see the dried glue....

Which shows that given 1 day off I suddenly have too much time on my hands.

Well the damn glue keeps getting sucked into the cork. lol

Or evaporating. Not sure.

I've put a 3rd set of glue on, but I might end up having to get something different like that 'water effects' stuff if this keeps up.

When it's painted, you can see the colour scheme.

The glue IS probably getting sucked up by the cork. It is a water based glue. My wife, brilliant hotty that she is, suggests using hot glue that you can buy from walmart. That will keep its shape and not get sucked up by the cork.

Oooh hot glue. Problem with that is, if I make a mess on the edge of the base...I can't just use my finger to clean it up. Well, I could. lol

Thanks, I need to make a trip out for a tripod for my camera anyway, might as well see about the hot glue gun...although I think there is one lying around the house, not sure.

Ard coat and green stuff work, but I want a natural 'goo' look you really only get from Elmers (or hot glue)...

You can, just make sure the tip is away from both finger and glue and be quick about it, the glue hardens pretty quickly. You could probably use a hobby knife to clean after it hardens, too, it cuts pretty well. Just make sure if you get a new gun that you check what temperature it works at, as well.

i don't know that I would like hotglue for this. It tends to be very stringy unless you were really careful it could mess with the look you're going for.

You could always check with lemmingspawn and ask how he did the bases for his IW (also lava scheme, with cork etc.)

Yeah that isn't the look I'm going for, sadly. The lava effect is too subtle on those, both on the base and on the model.

Sigh. Back to ze grind.

More work so far:

See that box in the back? Poor nids. lol

Second melta sister done.

First IG weapon team setup, looks good to me. I am going for a minimal look so I glued the lascannon power pack to the side of it.

Now if only they had a space marine with a hand free to help them carry the whole thing. lol

Oh and I liked what stjohn70 did with his IG weapons teams, so I cut the base down so the extra guy can fit on the big base but still be removable.

No more dice counters thanks. lol

Your making better progress then I am.

When dealing with an army that is 98% metal, I have literally ground to a halt.

Yeah well I find the IG more of a beatdown. So much flash, 6 parts per guy...

Besides, after doing 4 Eldar armies in my lifetime I really don't mind metal lol. I prefer plastic for converting, but metal for when I don't want to convert.

Of course now I'm in the reverse of what I want versus what I actually have...lol.

So I decided to do a test job and see how I liked it.

Got a little schhhloppy with a bigger brush, so I ditched it for a smaller one and did the inking point by point.

Makes me want to dip it all lol.

This is over a light primer of white.

Then I wanted to see if I could make the glue not suck into the cork if it was primed.

Then I had an inspiration...why not put some paint into the glue and see what happens?

I'll know in the morning...

I might have to use a different medium for the lava. Time will tell.

Try putting a thin layer of the glue over the cork in an attempt to seal it.

ATM you are adding more and more glue and it kees absorbing at the higher level.

I *did* do that, lol. The cork seems to have a magic black hole inside it.

I put a cup over the model, to try and stop the glue from evaporating (since I think that is what it really is). It was partially successful...the glue is a little tacky still but hasn't evaporated.

I think I'm going to take everyone off their base and do the bases separately with hot glue. Sigh...oh well.

So in need of a new camera, I went to Best Buy.

I was amused at the 300$ prices for a camera and 100$ prices for tripod for said camera.

So I went home to the internawt and bought a nice 5.1 megapixel camera and a tripod accessory kit for 76$ (and it includes rechargable batteries and a recharger...win!)

Total.

This is gona be way cool. I am planning on something like this on a smaller scale with PI heads and IG and was wondering how I was gonna do the metal command squad.

Very entertaining post, and helpful even! But whatever happened to the lizard orks man?

They've not gone anywhere, I will get back to them after I finish this army. They require lots of work, more than this army does and on a larger scale (both per fig and in amount per fig).

So why did you waste those pig iron heads on sister's ?

That makes them look like trannies so is your army a bunch of trannies ?

You combined awsome (sister's models) and awsome (pig iron) and it equals SUCK.

I mean if you filled boobies down then they look probelly pretty BA. and liked the IG

Thats my thoughts on this forum.

The Lava Idea is cool your not done painting it yet are ya?

ghostmaker, there is a way to bring up that you don't like a certain army idea that is tactful and helpful. And then there is the way you've chosen to do it here.

You are being completely rude by saying someones idea sucks. Most of the folks here think it's a great and very cool original idea to use the helmets on something like sisters.

You are out of line. This is a warning.

Agree +1 with grey _death.

Stelek has provided an excellent running commentary on his work and conversions and how he is working through his problems.

You can say you don't personally like the heads as others have but its his army and if he likes them so be it.

Please keep up the good work without taking the bait Stelek.

Dear Stelek,

Did you try spraying some Krylon Matte Spray onto the Cork to seal it? Or, paint it with some Gesso. I won't sugest that you just buy the bases from EBay, there's a guy in Australia that casts them in resin.....

.................................... Searching for Iscandar

I went out and got some krylon paint to do the figs. I also got a glue gun to do the lava properly. I think I have some matte spray around, but I'm going to first try doing bases without figs and if the results are good, second I'll undo a bit of work (removing the models from the bases is likely).

I'm pretty sure having the figs mounted was a mistake, the bases are more difficult to recreate than I thought and the fig in the way doesn't help.

So it goes. Back to work. I will try the matte spray and see if that seals the cork, but so far nothing has sealed it.

Black hole, I'm tellin ya. lol

Rather than al this glue have you though of just applying 1 coat to smooth off the base top (greenstuff would be harder to get consistently smooth) or a modelling clay etc... to create the lava.

I guess water effects would be worth a try as you have already thought of that.

Glue gun seems to be better. It burns nicely too. Oh before I forget, have a small cup of COOL water for when you oops your finger.

Pretty easy to do really, just give a harder squeeze to get more glue out for the bigger bases.

Don't uhh overdo it too much, like I did on one of the three bases.

It doesn't expand much, but gravity wins if you stack too much up.

I think it's got suitably 'gooey' lava properties.

Yeah, that looks really good. I'm pretty sure the Michael's that I get supplies from once in a while also sells hot glue sticks in different colors (including some fluorescent ones) that might make for some interesting effects. You might hit one up near you to check out what you might be able to get.
