Got the trolls all painted up and based. Next project on the platter is General Gerlak Slaughterborn to help keep these guys in line. He's assembled, primed, and will be painted and based before the end of the day and I'll get the picture up here when he is. Also hoping another box of Bloodgorgers come in today at the FLGS so I can start working on the second unit of them. First unit got no conversions, but in an effort to help with some diversity throughout the two units the new ones will start getting weapon swaps, probably from some of the Orks and Beastmen I've got lying around here. I was able to get some brass rod finally so after that I'm going to go thru and replace the halberd hafts on all the Bane Knights, or before depending on how quick I get Gerlak done and when/if those other trolls show up today.

It's a lot quicker to paint one troll than five, so here he is, General Gerlak Slaughterborn. He's so tiny, a concentrated little bundle of death!

Got new hafts done for all of the Bane Knights. Well, all of them except two. The special "leader" halberd has him holding it such that the haft runs the length of his arm, with just a short bit at the end sticking out, so it's actually pretty sturdy and I didn't feel needed to be replaced. Throwing up a picture of a few of them, and intentionally picked two of them that I think I did the worst job at drilling out the hands and had to replace fingers with Green Stuff. Had to replace multiple thumbs too, but that's far easier, and far less noticeable.
Rebuilt Lich Lord Asphyxious' spear haft again as well, as it had once again broken. It broke in the middle of one of the rods, between his hand and the spear head. I had thought I was going to give up on the green haft this time, but when I went to remove the old one, I found the pinning work I had done the previous time to be Really sturdy, and it was kind of hard to get it off. I decided to call the mid length break something of a freak accident, and give it another go. Rebuilt, repinned a new haft, but this time gave up one the pose of holding it up, which I think was a big part of it always getting hit and broken. Got him holding it a little more nonchalantly to one side. Also shorted his "flight stand" bit so he's not quite so tall on the table and in transport.
Need to let the Green Stuff on both the Great Gaspy and his Knights set up overnight, and I'll get the paint jobs touched up tomorrow. Also, I've ordered some new basing material to add to my bases, so you can look forward to something more than just green grass in the near future.

Cleaned up all the paint jobs from yesterday. Lich Lord Asphyxious all fixed up and ready to lead his forces to inevitable victory tomorrow. The new halberd hafts on the Bane Knights look real good. Apparently I'm rather bad at measurement or cutting to length because all their hafts are a bit longer now by about the length of that little blade on the end. Picture shows a random one on the left, the resculpted hand (which turned out much better than I was expecting) in the middle and one of the two I did not replace the haft on on the right. Finally people liked the little puppet for the Withershadow Combine I've been using, and I've never gotten around to trying to make a better one, so I went ahead and painted up the one I've got.

So I've had these left over pieces of Monolith from an old (and still unfinished) conversion sitting on my desk for awhile. Knew I wanted to use them for terrain, had a vague idea of what I wanted to do with them. Finally the mood hit me just right, I had a minor epiphany and a few things I wanted to try out, and presto, a new Cryx/Necron Soul Collector terrain piece for the FLGS. It's got no base so it will fit on any table style (grass/rock/snow) and I'll get someone at the FLGS to paint it up so it doesn't just end up in my personal army colors. Already got a good idea on how I want to do another one with more of the Monolith bitz but that probably won't get done till tomorrow.

The Big-Ball-O-Souls TM is made from a clear glass "design your own" craft ornament. Picked up a box of 20 from Hobby Lobby for $4 awhile back for some Necron stuff I was working on at the time. For some reason it never occurred to me back then to try painting the INSIDE of the ornaments. This time around I took a fair big brush, dipped it in a shade of green and scraped the paint off on the inside rim of the ornament a couple times, then did it a couple more times with a different shade of green, covered the hole with my thumb, and shook the thing up real good until the entire inside surface was covered. Gives it a real nice swirled pattern with zero brush strokes.
I thought about having the Big-Ball-O-Souls TM floating up slightly, but I want to make sure the thing is visually integrated into the machine somewhat, plus I don't want the "nozzle" of the ornament visible. The rivets are a good idea though. Looked at it, decided I didn't want to merely plaster excess rivets across random surface areas and just put some on areas where they had room and looked like they could actually be attaching components.
After I posted the first pictures I realized there was no real size reference, so I threw in a Bane Thrall on guard duty.

No time left tonight to work on the second one tonight, but since I don't have quite as clear cut an idea on exactly how I want to assemble this one, I'll go ahead and post up a picture of some of the components of note and solicit ideas. I've got quite a few of those bitz off on the left side, a nice stock of plasticard pipes and rods and sheets, bunch of wire, and tons more other bitz in general.

About the only advice off hand really is to have a steady open flame that you can use. My gas stove works really well for that. Otherwise keep a bowl of cold water handy, and be prepared to singe your fingertips.
Found out today there was some kind of error at Skullcrafts so even though I put my order in last week and was charged for it then, he didn't get the order till today, so I won't be able to get the extra flocking on my bases before the tournament this weekend it looks like. Maybe, but unlikely, we'll see how quick it moves. Kind of a bummer, but I'm a pretty accepting guy when mistakes are made and people apologize, plus he said he threw something extra in because of the mess up. All the stuff on their site looks pretty cool, so I'm kind of anxious to see what little bonus I get.
The trolls I ordered came in today and I was able to get those picked up. I want this batch to look Somewhat different from the first, so I'm going to start doing weapon swaps, either from one hand to the other, or from Orks and Beastmen and other such looking weapons I've got lying around. In addition I outright refuse for the Leader of both units to be identicle, so I did a repose on his main arm and head. Here he is sans Green Stuff.

I'm going to need more practice sculpting chains, but I think this attempt is passable enough. Also in typical fashion for me, I had the wrapping on the axe sculpted up real nice, then put my finger in it working on a different area, and couldn't get it quite as nice again. Should still look good enough when painted up though. Let the Green Stuff set up overnight, may or may not start painting them tomorrow, but they will be finished up before the end of the day Thursday.

Painted up the first Soul Collector right quick. It's a bit rough, but I'm not a super good painter, and it should still look plenty good at the table top level.

Phew. I trudged thru the day working on these guys, but I managed to get them completely finished. Eight more of these guys, a third Seether, and a pair of 5pt Bone Turkeys (not decided on defilers vs ripjaws yet) and I'll have my 50pt Venny list done. Really looking forward to throwing down Venny Tier 4 because I just think it would be really fun and reasonably competitive. Now I'm going to go watch the Fringe season premiere that I recorded earlier.

The new flock stuff showed up ~30 minutes after I headed out of town. Picked it up from the mailbox on the way back home, and I've now done up a few test subjects to see how what I wanted to do works out. I think it looks alright, rather subtle, but gets me away from the plain green grass bases.

I thought you were going to let someone else paint the soul collector though? I mean it looks good, but it seems to 'clean' to fit Cryx. Black would definitely fit better, or at leasy a darker, more dingy metal. Possibly some rust?

I swear I'll get a full army shot up, honestly! At the current moment, everything is built, painted, and in good repair. I just got this new flock, and now that I've decided I like looks of it on the figs, I'll get it added to the bases, and get some good pictures. I wouldn't think it'd take me too long, MAYBE tonight even.
I have darkened up the Soul Collector. Gave it a good solid wash of Badab Black. I went ahead and painted it myself because I really wanted to get the ball on it, but wanted it painted first so as not to mess up the ball, and people at the FLGS seem lackluster on my plan to get them to paint the stuff I build. But I want to give it a small base, mostly as something to put my new fancy flock on, and give it a couple long soul streams swirling down into it. Also maybe have that done tonight.

Alright, I managed to keep the slacking off to a minimum, so here it is, an army wide shot in all it's semi-focused glory. The only completed model this leaves out is the non-epic version of Asphyxious, since that would have two of him in one army, which you can't do, and his epic version is cooler looking.

By ballpark I assume you mean cost? It's hard to say honestly. I did not actually buy ANY Necrons to do this army. The only bitz I purchased were the skull masks for the `Jacks. When I built my Necron army, which currently boasts 15 Destroyers and 6 Heavy Destroyers plus Destroyer Lords, I purchased Battleforce Boxes to acquire the Destroyers, as it's only a slight price over just buying the Destroyers, and gives you a ton of extra Warriors for models and bitz. Used some of the Warriors to make my Destroyers. Left me with lots of extra bitz and Warriors. I've Still got sprues of Warriors sitting around.

Well, there are 34 guys with Necron Warrior heads. There's a few other Warrior parts scattered around, like the symbols on their chests, and the spines from the back are on the Bane Thralls' backs. That would cost one $105 to get normally. For a super fun expense, there are 16 guys with Necron Destroyer spines, and a couple with Necron Destroyer Lord spines. That would cost you another $460 unless you can find them on a bitz order site.

Ever since it was pointed out to me at a tournament that my Nightwretchs look almost exactly like Defilers, it's been nagging at me. I needed to pick up another Helljack, specifically a Slayer, to make into Venny's third Seether, and the new plastic starter box comes with a Slayer and three Bone Turkeys plus Denny for pretty much the same price as a multi-Helljack kit. Seems like a no brainer move, so I picked up the first one today. Seether takes a ton of Green Stuff work, so I put on Tremors 2, and got down to putting together the Turkey's first.
This first box I put together mostly stock. Two Deathrippers and a Defiler. I wanted to do a Shrieker and that means I had to use a Deathripper since only it has a real functional mouth. Defiler got a fair standard walking pose, while the other Deathripper went for a lot of motion and is in the process of banking a turn. Since the plastic is to much easier to work with, I'm going to wait till after painting or at least spray priming to cut the stacks off their back. Trying to paint those end caps as separate bitz is a pain in the pa toot.
I plan to get another box, make the Slayer into a Corrupter with the extra bitz I already have, make a second Defiler, and then make the two Deathrippers into Nightwretchs, this time aiming to actually have them Look like Nightwretchs. Before that I'll probably get a box of the Ripjaws, and in the end, that will give me two of each Bone Turkey.

Well, that price does assume you don't find a site that has the parts as Bitz orders, and buy the full Necron kits. The Destroyer spines on the Bane Knights and the leaders of other units is something I would have Never done if I didn't already have a ton of them lying around left over from my Necron army's conversions. Otherwise they only come one each to a $25 box, and are the primary cost.
